Firefox error "sec_error_unknown_issuer"

After years and years of using Firefox, I decided to leave it and start using Google Chrome.
Why ?
Because Firefox returns error "sec_error_unknown_issuer" very often, when I access to my usual websites.
Something must have been wrong with last Firefox update.
Getting these SSL errors on every other site is starting to really get annoying! There is nothing wrong with the SSL certificates or the sites. It's your browser that is unable to verify the certificates.
When you fix it, maybe (only maybe) shall I return to Firefox.
Have a good day.

hello, this is most probably caused by external factors and a possible solution depends on different factors. please attempt to add an exception on the bottom of the error page & inspect the certificate (see the screenshot attached for instructions):
<br>which '''issuer information''' does the certificate contain?
thank you!

Sometimes, when I click a link on a web page, I see in the address bar the words: "Search bookmarks and history" (greyed out) just before I am taken to the link I clicked. A moment later, when I'm at the link, its address appears in the address bar, and all is normal. It seems that this happens only from some particular sites. Is FireFox reporting that my bookmarks and history are being searched?

That is OK. Firefox will only display the link in the location bar after the DNS look up has succeeded and a connection to the server has been established. Until that has been done you see the default setting for the location bar: Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest

  • Firefox error when opening application

Recently installed latest firefox 3.6.3. Had other issues going on with my computer so am unsure exactly what triggered this event while fixing other issues (checking for virus/malware, updating windows xp). Tried reinstalling but issue still present.
When opening firefox, error message below appears.
Error Message: The instruction at "0x7c884204 referenced memory at "0xffffffff". The memory could not be "read".
Weird thing is, as I have firefox on my quick launch bar, when I double click it, attempting to open the application twice, it works, opening 2 firefox windows with no error. but when firefox is closed and I attempt to open just once, error message above appears.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

Why firefox developer is neglecting this every time they introduce newer version.?

hello raviparekh027, thanks for providing the screenshots.
as this problem might have different external causes please provide another piece of information:
when you attempt to add an exception on the bottom of the error page (don't do it for real though!) & inspect the certificate, '''which issuer information''' does the certificate contain? (see screenshot)

  • When connecting to Google, Firefox says it's not trusted and returns the error "sec_error_unknown_issuer"

I'm running the latest version of Firefox on Windows 7 Home Premium. I use Kaspersky antivirus.

Kaspersky has a feature to scan your web traffic and when it wants to scan HTTPS connections it needs to intercept and decrypt the traffic, which requires presenting Firefox with a fake certificate.
This support article has the steps for setting up Opera by importing a certificate file generated by Kaspersky, and it's most similar for Firefox:
    http://support.kaspersky.com/us/9093#block1
In Firefox, you would import the .cer file using the Advanced Panel of the Options dialog, here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Certificates mini-tab > "View Certificates" button
When the Certificate Manager dialog opens, click the Authorities tab (as you would in Opera).
Can you get the certificate imported and get to Google?

  • HTTPS error - sec_error_unknown_issuer

From Firefox nightly trying access https://support.mozilla.org/questions/912835, I get the Connection is Untrusted message.
    Technical Details
support.mozilla.org uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.
    (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)

Check the date and time in the clock on your computer: (double) click the clock icon on the Windows Taskbar.
Check out why the site is untrusted and click "Technical Details to expand this section.<br>If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
*Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
*Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.
You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.
If "I Understand the Risks" is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".
*Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
*Note that it is not recommended to add a permanent exception in cases like this, so only use it to inspect the certificate.

  • AppleSyncNotifier.exe entry point not found. Is this a Firefox error message?

The rest of the error message reads as follows:
The procedure sqlite3_wal_checkpoint could not be located in the dynamic link library SQlite3.dll
After closing this error message Firefox does work. Anything you can tell me regarding this would be greatly appreciated. As a second thought I've wondered if it is an Apple iTune problem.?????

    Doublechecking, Dad:
I have also reloaded all other iTunes software.
Did you use the following document as a guide?

  • Firefox Error with Roaming Profiles "Could not initialize the application's security component"

    Hi there
I get the common error "Could not initialize the application's security component" when I startup Firefox.
    I tried this manual: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/couldnt-initialize-applications-security-component
I have enough space left, i have read/edit/write-rights, created a new firefox profile and also reset all the settings, nothing works.
BUT I dont have a cert8.db File in my %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
    What can I do?
Like I said in my description, its about Users that are logged in with a Roaming-Profile. Every User has this problems, it doesn't matter if or without Admin-Rights.
Also this problem exists since Firefox 4.0.0, the last working Version was 3.6.13 I guess.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
Try to remove or rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) in the Firefox profile folder.
If that didn't help then also rename the cert8.db file to cert8.db.old or delete the cert8.db file to remove intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored.
If that helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file.<br />
Otherwise you can rename (or copy) the cert8.db.old file to cert8.db to restore the previous intermediate certificates.<br />
Firefox will automatically store intermediate certificates when you visit websites that send such a certificate.
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 25: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Cannot reacquire firefox. error message reads "your firefox profile cannot be loaded. it may be missing or inaccessible.

I lost Firefox for no apparent reason. I deleted the program and attempted to reinstall and download. Received an error message that read "Your firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." At the same time, I lost Picasa and all my photos. When I tried to reinstall Picasa, I received the same message about Firefox. Can someone please help. It's driving me nuts.

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_missing_profile
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Having problems installing firefox error msg says error creating directory c:\programme files (x86)\mozilla firefox\searchplugins

Hi, I have been having problems with Internet Explorer 8 using Windows 7 so wanted to install Firefox but unable to as get a message saying error creating directory c:\programme files (x86)\mozilla firefox\searchplugins

Thank you guig2! Followed your bleepingcomputer.com link above and found the problem was my permissions on C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local/Temp. It was not "Full Control" for my User or Administrator. Updated the two lines to permit full control for folder, subfolder and files. Ran perfect.
