Firefox: Faster under WINE than Native?

I just got sent this link: http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid … 13/0058251
Apparently, the windows version of Firefox runs better under wine than the native linux version, possibly because the linux version isn't optimized.  Can anyone take a look at this and see if they can confirm it?

kensai wrote:Yeah, there is no difference between the same machine running windows and firefox than linux and firefox. The difference is only when it is run on wine, so this is even better for the wine developers.
That is definitely not true in my tests.  I've done it multiple times, because I though that openjdk6 and jde/jre could make a difference, and I always got results that were consistent with the findings of the Slashdot article.  I tested on a fairly slow computer (Intel Atom based netbook) and the performance differences were very clear.  I'm not sure why others are getting different results -- perhaps pgo-optimized builds of Firefox are slower than the generic Arch build?  I'm very skeptical of those findings that claim that performance is the same in Linux and Windows, because Linux/Windows performance actually differs for every individual test in sunspider test suite -- in some cases Linux is actually faster, but in most cases Windows versions of Firefox performs better.

  • 64-bit Nightly v29 and Firefox v26 under Win7 64-bit are so slow for streaming, achieving only 4% of BW otherwise achieved by the sam firefox under Win7 32-bit.

Under my Window 7 64-bit OS, I've installed both Nightly Build v28 and v29 to perform "internet speed test" and each time, I can only achieve something < 2 mbps for my home Wi-Fi, gateway router which is about >56 Mbps. The only working Nightly version was v23 that could achieve close to >52 mbps. But once I update v23 to higher version, all the normal high speeds I could achieve at Nightly v23 are gone. The same issue plagued also firefox v26 under Win 7 64-bit.
For clarification, this is not true under Win 7 32-bit OS - the same firefox v26 works fine to achieve the raw BW speed close to and >56 mbps. WHy not in 64-bit OS seems to be the main question?
What's going on? I greatly appreciate you looking into and helping me out on this dilemma. Thanks!
    Sincerely
    Shao Ma

hello Shao Ma, when you are using speedtest.net or a similar flash-based site to measure your connection speed then it might be an issue with the protected mode that [http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html adobe has introduced] for its flash plugin for firefox. some old versions of f-secure or trusteer rapport are known to cause such slowdowns together with flash, or it might be something similar on your system that is interfering (maybe security software that is blocking/sandboxing the container used for the protected mode, etc...).
as a workaround you could try [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode] & see if this makes a difference.
in case you'd like to troubleshoot the issue further, it would be best to contact adobe's support & file a bug report at bugbase.adobe.com (choose "Adobe Flash Player" as the product & "Browser Integration" as the product area), since they will have a better understanding of the internals of flash protected mode & therefore may know what else might be at the root of the problem you were seeing.

  • I need to install the windows version of firefox and run it under wine to see how a page looks but I can only seem to download the linux version

I keep trying to download the windows version of firefox so I can run it under wine on linux but all I can find is the linux version because the web site automatically detects the os. Any ideas on how I could do this?

  • ITunes under Wine?

I see on the web that some people have succeeded to run some version of iTunes (all version are still available on: http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php ) under wine. When I try, it never works (it "installs" but when I try to run it it say that some component are missing or that I have to install quicktime, which I have done). My question is if there are some people here that have had better success than me. If yes, what are the software that you install before iTunes (I suspect it might works with some tricky configuration or dll installation).
Actually I only need iTunes to browse the itunes store (this is the only thing we can't do with native linux software, playing the file works great with mplayer).

The only thing I am interested is to be able to purchase song from the  iTunes store. It appears that they have a huge collection of song, almost everything that exists on CD in the world. I do not know spotify, is it also the case? I know http://www.starzik.com where you can purchase song without any particular software.
BaconPie wrote:Also, have you tried a virtual machine running Windows? I have one set up for any quick Windows tasks. in fact, I was setting it up for iPhone syncing a while ago... I wonder why I stopped? *digs out virtual box*
I have a version of Windows XP that was preinstalled on my laptop and do not run under a virtual machine (it looks in the bios). I do not want to buy a version of Windows. I just purchase a few songs from the iTunes store from time to time and once I have them, I play them in linux.

  • Big Problem with Directx 11 and Games scaling when lower than native resolution

    Hi Guys,
MY system is Windows 7 Home Premium (Korean version), and I have dual GPUs, Nvidia Geforce GT 630m for gaming, and Intel HD Graphics 4000 for all other display matters.  My native resolution is 1920 x 1080.
This problem wasn't there couple of years back, but from 2~3 years ago, when I play recent games that require/favour directx 11 (such as Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins), it seems when I use lower than native resolution (such as 1280
x 720) and select fullscreen, giant ugly black borders always appear around the game, and the game does not fill the whole screen.
I thought this was something which could be fixed in my GPU's control panel, but there was no scale fullscreen option under Nvidia's control panel.  So I went into Intel HD Graphics control panel, but there was no Scale fullscreen option there either (under
native resolution.  With lower resolution there was).
Anyway, after months and months of searching, I finally found an Intel forum which was discussing the same situation:
    https://communities.intel.com/thread/44539
While going through the forum, I found out from other users that problem is not with GPU's drivers, but with Directx 11.
To test this theory, I put Batman: Arkham Origins in Force Directx 9 mode, and changed the game resolution to 1280x720.  And the game showed no black borders, it scaled up perfectly to fullscreen under Directx 9 (so no problem whatsoever under directx
9).  I changed the setting to Directx 11, and the ugly black borders appeared again.
Could someone please help with this?  I know I can change my screen's resolution every time I play the game, but it's a real nuisance to do that.  And more games are utilising Directx 11 or higher, and I don't think there are many games where I can
force Directx 9 mode like I did for Arkham Origins.
Or if someone connected could contact the people working on Directx 11 and ask about this issue (and get them to contact me through my email below), that would be much appreciated.
    my email:
    [email protected]
p.s. : all my GPU drivers are currently up to date, and the black borders issue is still there

    Hello MeipoXu
While yes, at first people on the Intel forum thought it was the display driver problem (hence the question was originally posted on the Intel forum).  But if you look closely through the pages especially Pages 2 onwards, there are some very astute
    comments by some posters:
Update to black borders problem: The problem is DirectX11. Fx. Company of Heroes has a setting "Shader Quality" that when set to ULTRA it will run directX11 and when set below ULTRA it will run directX9. So the intel graphics driver is not
responsible! It is Microsofts DirectX11 that does it - maybe only to computers with both Intel HD and a second graphics card for video games
Different workarounds to the black border problem:
    Change resolution before running fullscreen
    Use directX9 instead of directX11
Fx. in CoH2 there is a setting fx. 50% of resolution, so even in native resolution the graphics is only half and thus faster
    Try window mode without borders
    and here's also another:
I can confirm that this problem still seems to exist, and that it definitely seems to be related to DirectX 11.
In a variety of games, turning DirectX11 off (either in-game or using ini files in some games that don't present you with the choice) fixes the issue. But this is obviously not ideal.
I have a laptop with a native resolution of 1920x1080, but tend to run games at 1280x720 because it provides much better performance on my HD 4400 graphics chip. This bug and the memory leak issue on Windows 8.1 are extremely annoying.
Like the first poster, my PC has intel HD GPU, and a second graphics card for games (Nvidia).
And all the members have mentioned that they updated the intel graphics driver, but it does not fix it - so it doesn't seem like a graphics driver problem (and more to do with Directx 11).
And they are right.  With Batman Arkham Origins, if I set the resolution to 1366 x 768 and apply fullscreen, under Directx 11, ugly black borders appears.  Luckily Arkham Origins has "Force Directx 9 mode" which I use, but a lot of games
don't have this mode (such as ACIV Black Flag, Watch Dogs, Sleeping Dogs etc) - you either play in ugly black borders, or can't play the game at all.
And all my Graphics Drivers are currently up-to-date, and issue still exists, so I don't think it's the driver problem.
I have already tried that registry method you just mentioned.  It didn't work.
As for Directx 12, well I just hope it works better than Directx 11 (with its ugly black borders in games) does, and works well like Directx9 (with no problem in scaling).

  • PSE 7.0 Invalid Serial Number under Win 8.1

Moved from a Dell PC running Win XP SP3 to an HP with an 3.80 GHz AMD 6200 6 core processor, 10 Gb RAM running Win 8.1. Had installed PSE 7.0 four or five years ago on the Dell - it meets my limited needs and I don't really want to upgrade. I re-installed PSE 7.0 (from the Adobe download site) and registered the product on Adobe.com. However, the program refuses to accept the serial number, claiming it is "not valid." Tried Adobe chat and Manoj Kumar confirmed the serial number was valid. However, he then stated that PSE 7.0 is not supported on Win 8.1 and he is consequently unable to assist further. Since the program works fine other than for not accepting a valid serial number, I don't see that Win 8.1 is an issue. Any thoughts? Is it helpful to copy any applicable files from the old computer?

Having searched for similar issues with other PSE users, it is apparent Adobe does not intend to respond - none of the numerous questions on serial numbers have received a response. I found the answer to my question, but the solution will not help anyone who can't locate their original installation disks.
There is an apparent difference in the serial numbers that are issued on-line during product downloads and those that are printed on the box / disk sleeve. I managed to dig up the six year old install disk and initiated setup. The first pop up box requests a serial number and I entered my original number. The installation proceed without incident, other than requesting a file update which I obtained from Adobe downloads. The serial number which was rejected when downloading a copy of PSE 7.0 from Adobe works just fine in the identical disk based install.
And, a note in passing to "Manjo Kumar:" PSE 7.0 runs just fine under Win 8.1. Please stop using the excuse that Win 8.1 is not supported and give users the real answer: "If you download a copy, you need a downloaded serial number. If you originally installed from disk, you need to re-install from disk. A disk based serial number won't work on a download copy."
Short sighted attempt by Adobe to force users to purchase another copy of previously installed software.

  • SAP Netweaver Trial Version under Win 7

    Dear Support - Team,
I have a new laptop installed with Win 7 Home Premium 32bit version.
Now i wanted install the trial version from DVD (it was an additional to the book " ABAP Objects in SAP Netweaver).
At first the installer tried to start and needed an addon from MicroSoft and wanted a Reboot of my system,
and then I had to start the setup.exe again.
    This was 3 times again.
Now when i try again to install the version 7.0 from dvd, i get the error message:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:run
    Exception in the read:"main"
Now i have tried it again and i get the error:
the installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the console or silent flag.
The graphical mode is 1366 to 768.
    What i do wrong?
Do i need the version 7.01 or something else?
Or doesn't run the system under win 7?
I would be very pleased to you, when i get some answers or tipps to solve this problem and i can start my education in programming sap!!

A friend said, it could be a error in my graphical installation: i have to choice the agp slot for my graphic card.
    but this seems to difficult.
In the system requirements doesn't stand something to this point.
At the moment i'm downloading the version 7.01 but it is a long way because i don't have a great bit rate in my dsl.

  • Wifi asks for user name under win 7 ?

I have a unibody MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz, everything is working properly under OS X 10.6. I also have win 7 installed, and everything seems fine there also, except when i try to connect to a wireless network, windows asks me for a user name and a password. I do have the password, but i've never had to insert a user name before. I have no idea what the user name is.
The funny thing is that, a few weeks ago my wifi was working properly under win 7, but since I moved to a new location, i haven't been able to connect to that network anymore. In Snow Leopard same wifi works fine.

You can't differentiate between subdirectories in Firefox, so even if you would edit the URL then it wouldn't work and you might corrupt the file by doing that.

  • Enhancing the DOS Experience Under Win 7

Let’s be honest, more than a few of us still have a DOS application we like to run once in a while. Concern about losing access to these old family favorites may be keeping some of us from upgrading out of XP long after we would otherwise have done so. If you’ve tried running a DOS application under the Win 7 beta or Vista, you are already aware of the problems. The new operating systems will run DOS applications, but not very enthusiastically.
For one thing, shortcuts created for running DOS-based programs under Win 7 or Vista will display only an unattractive blank vanilla icon on the desktop. For another, all you get to run your DOS application in is a cramped little window almost too small to be usable.
Here’s a way to improve on both of these situations and enhance your DOS experience under Win 7 or Vista. It is adapted from a posting by Edward Mendelson on a Word Perfect-DOS site a year or so ago.
First, be sure you have copied all the files you need for your DOS program to a folder you can locate again when prompted. Now right-click on the desktop. Select New from the menu, then Shortcut, and then enter cmd.exe when asked for the location of the item. Click on Next, and type the name you want to use in the shortcut. For example, if the program you want to use is Professional File, as it is in my case, type in Pro File and then click Finish. Next, right-click on the resulting generic shortcut and choose Properties. Select the Shortcut tab and note what is now displayed in the Target field.
Do not alter what you see there, but move the cursor to the right of cmd.exe, type a space, then add this text:
/c c:\(folder location)\(executable file name). In my computer this would be /c c:\PF\PF.exe. Notice that the text to add begins with a forward slash, then the letter "c", then a space, then the folder location.
Now you are ready to select your icon. Click on Change Icon button and type moricons.dll in the space under "look for icons…" at the top. Click OK and select the icon you want from the choices offered. Click OK again, and your new shortcut, complete with a new icon, will be displayed on the desktop.
The next step is to help resolve the problem of the cramped window you get to work with for your DOS application. You can’t actually increase the number of lines allocated to the DOS window, but you can make it bigger by choosing a larger font size. Right-click on your new shortcut and then the Font tab. Now select the Lucia Console font size you want. I find 20 about right, but you can pick a larger size if you prefer. The working window will enlarge in response to the font size change. Click OK, and you will finally have both a shortcut icon of your choice for your DOS application, and a window large enough to actually use.

    11.11.2010 by U.Ar
A very good idea: To write the name of a program to be executed by CMD as parameter!
For example, I’m using a batch file INI.BAT containing the command PATH C:\UXD;%PATH% and a menu display.
The directory C:\UXD is my User eXecution Directory containing all the old program files to be executed in the CMD environment. By adding
this directory to the system PATH variable, it is accessible as long as the CMD environment is active.
One more hint optimizing the CMD window: By right click on the CMD icon, you can open the properties (in German *Eigenschaften”)
window. You click on the register card “Layout” and can now enlarge the CMD window according to your monitor space.
A very good idea is to click on the options register card and specify more buffer space. I’m using 8
buffers with 200 lines allowing to scroll the CMD window. After typing HELP CMD for example, I can study easily the long help text of more than 100 lines.

  • UTorrent works under Wine

Hey all, just wanted to let people know that uTorrent is working under Wine.
This may already be common knowledge, but I tried it earlier and I couldn't get any transfers going. Make sure you have port-forwarding set correctly if necessary. I just successfully finished downloading a torrent, so now I can officially abandon Azureus which has gotten too bloated imho. Anyone looking for a good bittorrent client in Linux can give uTorrent a shot.
By the way, one of the nice things you can do is automatically stop seeding once you're upload ratio is 1, something I quite like.
I'm adding this little script for anyone that's interested. It lets you pass
    torrents to uTorrent from Firefox.
    #!/bin/bash
    read torrent << HERE
    $(echo "$1" | sed 's///\\/g')
    HERE
    wine /Path/to/uTorrent.exe "$torrent"
If you're wondering about the part before the call to wine, it's necessary because uTorrent (being a windows program) expects back slashes in the path to the .torrent file instead of forward slashes. That bit of code replaces "/" with "" in the path to the torrent passed to the script by Firefox.
    To use the script:
    1. copy the code to a text editor and modify it with the path to your copy of uTorrent.
    2. save it as "utorrent.sh," and make it executable: chmod +x utorrent.sh.
    3. In Firefox, the next time you click a torrent link, select "Open with" in the "What should Firefox do with this file?" box that pops up. Click on the drop down list and choose "Other" and find utorrent.sh. If you want you can also select "Do this automatically for files like this from now on."
    4. After you hit OK uTorrent will open (if it's not already) and will be ready to download the torrent.

Tech-Man wrote:Azureus is still better even though it's bloatware, as the UPnP works fine, whereas the UPnP in uTorrent doesnt work under wine.
    I use fixed ports.
    Tech-Man wrote:
and before anyone says use fixed ports, thats just one way to get traffic shaped by your ISP hence I use UPnP.

uTorrent supports protocol encryption, so they can't see that the packets are torrent stuff.

  • Plug-in under Win 2K

I've read conflicting messages regarding the Java plug-in under Win 2K. Here is our situation:
    1) We currently use the 1.2.2 version of the plug-in. Everything works fine under Win NT.
    2) When installing the 1.2.2 plug-in under Win 2K (not logged in as an administrator, or with the proper privs), the plug-in would not install.
    3) When installing the 1.2.2 plug-in under Win 2K (logged in as an administrator), the plug-in installed successfully.
    Questions:
    1) Is this a known problem (to Sun) with the Java plug-in under Win 2K? If so, is there a solution other than upgrading to 1.3.x (if upgrading is indeed a solution)? We want to upgrade to 1.4 when it is ready.
    2) I'm guessing (I don't know anything about Win 2K) that "normal" users are not given authority to install the plug-in (or anything else) on their own machine? How do "normal" users install software?
    3) Is there a site (Microsoft or otherwise) that discusses Win 2K security/administrators?
    4) What other problems will I run into once I get the plug-in installed (as an administrator or otherwise) under Win 2K?
I know this has been talked about on several other threads... just trying to get a clear answer.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Van Williams

"Normal Users" don't install software on NT/2000. You need to have rights to do so such as being a member of the Administrators group.
After installation of the JRE/JDK from 1.2 to 1.3.1 I've not noticed any problems from Java or the plug-in.
There is this one really peculiar thing that we have happen on all of our machines that we install Java onto, reguardless of the machine, and consequently run Java apps on:
They work--no DLL Hell, and they keep on working after system updates, patches, and other application updates. Peculiar thing, but we love it!

    Hello everybody,
Will appreciate your help or advice on the above problems I am experiencing with the MSI FX5700-VTD256 VGA PCI Card
I am using the following driver versions
For VGA - NVIDIA VGA Driver 71.25 for Win XP/2000
For Capture - NVIDIA Capture Driver (For FX series)
    Downloaded from http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=533&kind=2
My configuration is AMD with 512 MB Ram under Win XP SP2
    VGA problem
I am getting bad JPEG quality when browsing the web under either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, that is, picture under the JPEG format does display but with lots of artefacts, pixel soups around or in the pictures. What is causing this?
    Capture problem
My capture card automatically set itself to NTSC colour standard each time I restart my PC, I can set this via Virtual each time. Are there any other settings which I can access to set it to PAL or SECAM permanently? If not, why this auto set up to NTSC?
    Thank you.
    Antony

I will like to update my posting, the jpeg display problem seems to be from the internet accelerator utilities provided by my ISP which reduce the quality of JPEG for the acceleration of web site display. But I am not sure if this is the main reason, have to test from another ISP to be sure.

  • Picasa2 under wine/linux

    how cool is this.....
    installation steps
    1)  pacman -S wine
    2) wine picasa-setup.exe
    wow.. that's it?!?!
video doesn't seem to play yet, but i've only had it installed for about 3 minutes, so i can't quite say anything bad yet.  in general, it looks/feels quite the same.

i believe gthumb doesn't do movies.  i had my eye on f-spot for a while, but thought that was also an image only viewer.
i'ld love to hear other options.  feel free to list any you know that can view images and movies together and i'll look through them.  i thought i had already looked, but i did miss digikam.  must have had my gnome blinders on.
digikam looked neat, on first glance i didn't see an option for movies, i need to go deeper apparently.   thanks scarecrow, that may end up being a better solution if it can do video too.
    why picasa...
picasa2 has always been what my wife uses to view photo albums and such. it's rather addictive actually, it shows images, movies and everything as one big album.  but it also has some other neat tools letting upload to your local malmart for printing and such for 1 hour printing, timelines, slideshows, screensavers, photo-dvds... blah, blah, about everything you could think to do with an album (which i'm guessing most don't work under wine).
there might be other tools worth looking at under linux, but i'm migrating my wife's machine (slowly) to linux.  getting her email to gmail, her browser to firefox. and the last hold out is the ability to view our album nicely.   she likes picasa, and if change can be avoided that's a plus for now.
my excitement was mostly due to the fact that i hadn't played with wine for a while.  the last time i did, and tried to get diablo ii lod running, it was quite a bit more leg work.  i was amazed at how easy it is now to get something running under wine.  might be due to a nicely packaged wine.  if that's the case, i owe someone a sixpack.

  • EAC under Wine

After countless hours of frustration I decided to make this post.
I have pestered people in many IRC channels, dug through forums, and exhausted the bug comments at winehq.
These are the steps I have taken to try and make it work. They are a combination of things I saw in the bugzilla stuff on winehq but nothing seems to help.
    >I install wine with pacman
    >run WINEARCH=win32 winecfg
    >mount a cdrom to /media/cd
    >in the 'drives' tab of winecfg I path to /media/cd
I then click the 'Show Advanced' button and select CD as the type
    >I make ~/.wine/dosdevices/d: a symlink to /dev/sr0 (my optical drive)
    > I make sure my user owns /media/cd and /dev/sr0
    >open the EAC install exe with wine
    >run regsvr32 sql* in the EAC dir
    >run EAC.exe with wine
    >Set the interface to the native win32
    >close and reopen EAC
at this point I get EAC to open but it is frozen. There is no cursor, I can't click, and hot keys don't work. It would seem that there might be another dll that is not getting registered. Here is a pastebin of what it looks like when I run EAC.
    http://pastebin.com/5MgxSE09
I am convinced this has something to do with either an unregistered dll or a problem in how my drives are set up in winecfg and the ~/.wine/dosdevices dir
Is there anyone out there who is successfully running EAC under wine who could let me know how it's done?

hmmm, the latest eac runs fine for me under wine on my arch64 system (multilib libraries installed of course) under kde; I'm ripping a cd right now as a matter of fact.  I never mounted my audio cd's when I ripped them though.
I think I set my cd drives for autodetect in wine's config gui, ran the eac install and followed the blowfish guide for setting up my drives and compression options.  Sorry that I cannot be more of a help

  • Safari slow - FireFox fast

I just come U.S from China. I am using school's network now.
the soft update always report error, can not link to the sever. and safari, itunes, quicktime link very slow. just like through a slow proxy. but haven't set any proxy
the firefox works well. skype works well, ichat works well.
my friend told me, maybe is the DNS error. I try to link google by ip and web address with safari. they spent same time, about 3min, while firefox about 1sec.

golden grape - Welcome to the discussions!
DNS problems are very irritating - and some of the hardest to figure out.
Let's start gathering some information to see how things are set up. Open the Network Utility and go to the "Lookup" tab. Pick one or two addresses and look them up. How long does the server report it took to do the lookup (query time). How long did you wait from clicking go?
P.S. sometimes the best thing is to ignore these things for an hour or so - it's often a temporary thing while your DNS server works out the addresses you need. Also - mac OS will cache the addresses - so once you have them - you don't need to wait anymore on DNS to find things. Try to leave your mac on as long as possible - unless you have some bad software or corruption on a disk - the longer it runs, the faster things will get.

7ms! Your DNS server is a lot faster than mine.
I can confidently say that you don't have DNS problems. If you had DNS problems - firefox and Network Utility should be equally slow. This really has nothing to do with mini hardware either.
It would be best to ask a new question titled "Safari slow - FireFox fast" in the Safari group. I'm sure a lot of people there will have good ideas to find out what causes safari to go slow when firefox can browse the same site with speed.

One things I can suggest is:
    * Temporarily change your Safari preferences to open the bookmarks or a blank page. You will know if safari is waiting on something locally or the web page is drawing slowly. I doubt this is it - but you never know until you try to narrow down what exactly is slow.

I am using school's network now.
Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet through 'normal' means, such as a home internet connection (broadband, dialup etc), or does it just happen at school?
