Firefox ferezes after opening a new tab

This is difficult to reproduce on command but happens regularly enough that I have found myself shying away from FireFox 4...
I have FireFox 4.01 on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit (SP1). 4 GB ram, 66 GB free on the HD.
On a regular basis, after opening a new tab, FireFox simply freezes. It will not respond to any mouse clicks or keyboard input. It will simply sit there doing nothing until I get frustrated and use Task Manager to kill it. At that point, I can restart FireFox and it almost always recovers the sites that I had open.

  • Firefox will not open any new tabs since windows update

I have windows 7 64, and recently, when windows automatically updated, my firefox will not open any new tabs, manually or when opening a link...

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

  • Minimize button doesnt work with mouse right button after openning a new tab in windows 8.1 with firefox nightly

I'am using Mozilla firefox nightly version in Windows 8.1 .... after starting the Mozilla all toolbar options, minimize, maximum buttons works fine. but as soon as i open a new tabe the (minimize, maximize, close) options do not work with mouse left button clicking. I have to click taskbar "nightly icon" to minimize or close the browser.

    HI Ashraful_007,
Currently Nightly is not a supported version and is changing each day, however please also to not be discouraged to try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to make sure it is not an add on as well as file a bug in bugzilla.mozilla.org.

  • I would like to be able to start typing a URL directly (with no need to clear the field first) after opening a new tab with my homepage...

I've just installed the newest desktop version of the Firefox browser because my Opera doesn't feel very well these days. I'm trying to become friends with Firefox, and that's why I've changed the new tab settings in order to have my offline homepage loaded every time I open a new tab. There is an inconvenience — when I press Ctrl+T, the cursor appears at the end of the URL. It means that when I start typing, the letters show in the address bar after the URL of my homepage, so what I need is to clear the field first.
Is there a way to get rid of this? (If it helpes, I'm currently using Windows 7.)
I would appreciate if I could just press Ctrl+T, type a URL, and press Enter when I want to go to a website different from my homepage. Thank you for your replies!

Then you can use (Ctrl+L and) Ctrl+A to select all the text in the location bar or Shift+Home/End.

  • After opening a new tab, when I click on my home page (the house icon), it duplicates and opens a second window...it's never done this before?

I just installed Firefox on a new laptop. Google is my home page. My opening tab is always Google. But, when I open a New Tab, it doesn't open in Google. So, I've always clicked on the house icon to take me straight to Google. Now when I do, TWO tabs open in Google. (it duplicates)

I tried all of the above, I've reinstalled Firefox and I've checked if value set to 3 in browser.link.open_newwindow which it is, but the problem still happens.
Regarding what you say re what is written in the article Tab preferences and settings, I understand what this means. However I am using FireFox in my work. I have a CRM where I constantly click on a button that automatically opens my order system on a new tab, or email templates in a new tab etc. The tab opens next to the tab I am currently on. However ever since I was prompted to Refresh Firefox earlier, it now opens these in a new window. Therefore the size of these pages has nothing to do with it, as this was not a problem before.
This is irritating, as no I have to go from one window to another, and where I have multiple tabs open it is making my life difficult.
    Not happy!

  • The command "firefox" doesn't open a new tab in a working Firefox

When Firefox is running and I try to open a new tab from the shell, for example `firefox -new-tab www.google.com` it will complain that firefox is already running. Obviously it tries to start a new instance instead of communicating with the running one. But I can't figure it out why it behaves as such.
    Here's a screenshot:

This problem happens as of the 9.0 upgrade.

    Found the issue.
I was using the -no-remote option to start Firefox from my awesome menu.
I used that since I have two profiles that I use in parallel. It seems in 9.0 -no-remote completely disables the remote controllability of the instance.

  • Firefox will not open a new tab

Firefox has stopped letting me open a new tab. If I click on the plus sign, hit Ctrl-T, or go to File>New Tab, nothing happens. The only way a new tab will open is if I click on a link in an email, then it opens the link as a new tab. I use tabs frequently and it's very annoying to have to go find an email with a link just so I can open a tab. It doesn't matter if I have only one or several tabs open. I haven't installed anything other than Firefox and Windows (I have Windows 7) updates. I am running Firefox 24.0 but the problem started with the earlier version.

  • Just downloaded latest version and now Firefox won't open a new tab. How do I fix this?

I've been using Firefox for years, however as of last week I can no longer open a new tab. I have to go to "file > new window" new tab quick function nor dropdown work. I'm using a Mac OS X 10.9.3.

    '''''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''''' {web link}
    While you are in safe mode;
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Advanced > General.'''
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Poke around safe web sites and see if there is still a problem. Then restart.

  • Firefox does not open a new tab when you click the plus sign button which is actually a shortcut for opening a new tab. You have to open a new firefox window in order to get a new tab. Please help. Thanks.

I didn't have this problem before with Firefox. My kids must have pressed something or clicked on something that's the open new tab button does not function anymore. No matter how you click it, it doesn't open a new tab. Even if you click on file, then go to new tab, it still doesn't open a new tab. You have to open a new firefox window in order to do multiple browsing.
Hope you can help resolve this problem.
    Sincerely,
    Ems Guillarte

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened. Checking your list of add-ons, the MyPlayCity toolbar is a version of the Ask toolbar.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

  • Firefox doesn't open a new tab unless I access a random link. How do I fix this?

The problem that I have with my Firefox browser is that when I click the '+' button to open a new tab, it doesn't open. But if I click on some random link, it opens in a new tab. This has been going on for almost 2 weeks and I don't know what could have caused this problem. I hope that you can help me. I tried reinstalling Firefox, but the problem persists. Thank you.

I suggest you to upgrade your browser to Firefox 7 and check:

  • Since yesterday clicking on a link in an email message firefox doesn't open a new tab with that particular website.

I am using Firefox 3.6.13 on a 2009 Mac Pro computer (OSX 10.6.6). Up until yesterday when I clicked on a link in an email message Firefox opened a new tab and switched to that particular website. Since yesterday Firefox doesn't do that. I have Firefox set up as my default browser. I tried to change my default browser to Safari, then everything worked fine. Clicking on a link in a message a new tab has opened in Safari with that particular website. My problem is, that I like Firefox a bit more than Safari and I'd like to know what to do to restore that functionality to Firefox.

It's a good idea to try disabling Flash completely and see whether the problem continues. If it does, then my guess is incorrect. To test that, open this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
Here you can locate Shockwave Flash and use the Disable button. Keep this tab open for easy access when doing your test.
''If your test confirms that Flash is causing the problem,'' then the other thread has two suggested workarounds. The first is simple to understand (keep some Flash running at all times) but may be inconvenient to do all the time. The second is trickier because it requires editing a file in (or creating and then dragging a file into) a system folder. Fortunately you only need to do it once.

    Hi Marx,
With this kind of data testing it is helpful to provide context to the issue you are trying to document. This technical information is very useful to the engineers working on the performance of Firefox and I am sure this is the kind of information they would love to see.
Therefore I would like to put you in touch with this team to see what they can do with this information. Talk to the #perf channel in irc and they should be able to put you in the right direction. I am asking currently and see what I can find. Or in the meantime check out the current tab bugs in the Performance component of bugzilla provided in the search below: [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=tab%20performance&list_id=9361049]

hello, this sounds a bit as if the ctrl-key on your keyboard is constantly pressed - maybe it's a hardware issue, can you try with a different keyboard?

  • In the previous version of Firefox you would open a new tab by clicking on the small "Open New Tab" button at the Right Hand Side of the Tabs. This button has now disappeared in my upgrade.

I just installed Firefox 4. In the previous version you would open a new tab by clicking on the small "Open New Tab" button at the Right Hand Side of the Tabs. This button has now disappeared in my upgrade. Firefox help still says you can open a new Tab by using the "Open New Tab" Button so how do I get it back??

I got it back by going to "customize toolbar" and hitting "restore default set"! Now there is a small tab next to my open tabs with a "+" on it.

  • No cursor in address bar after opening a new tab on full screen mode

    Hello all!
When opening a new tab in full screen mode, I noticed that the cursor dissappears from the address bar. Since I cannot write the address without clicking the bar, I think this is a very annoying issue...
Does anyone have the same problem?
    Thank you.

Try resetting Safari. From the menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
