Firefox freeze apparently due to mesa 10.3.1

Hi!
I searched for recent posts about my bug but the closest I got was this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=188484
I first tried to remove all my extensions, which didn't work and then I tried downgrading to Firefox 32 (as said in the other thread), but didn't work either.
That being said, I tried to downgrade from mesa 10.3.1 to 10.3.0 and now Firefox seems to work far better now, so if you get some sort of weird freeze (no light gray window, everything about image/video is frozen, but the sound, from flash, still works). I have an AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6870 with the open source drivers.
Here's the line to downgrade:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/mesa-10.3.0-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
I hope this will be useful to someone too

I've had issues with Firefox freezing on suspend or when activating and deactivating my external monitor (intel driver using sna and intel-video-output) for about two days now.
Apparently it's an evince bug, the fix is simple:
rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libevbrowserplugin.so
I found the solution here:
https://bbs.archlinux.de/viewtopic.php?pid=330183
And here's the bug report:

Hope it helps someone else.
Thanks for the pointer.  Saw the glib errors in the log but they were very random in conjunction with Firefox actually crashing.  So far so good.  Must have been a change in Gnome 3.14 (evince) causing this, can't remember if there was an evince Firefox plug-in with Gnome 3.12.

  • Firefox freezes on start (have tried compatibility, reinstall, and older versions, and disabled anti-virus)

Firefox completely freezes when I open it (don't have to click on anything, or do anything). I read that Hyper-Threading could be the issue on Pentium 4 machines. I'm on a Pentium, so I gave it a shot. When in campatiblity, it loads, but when I try to open a page, it crashes (comes up with the Mozilla crash reporter thing).
When it does freeze up, the CPU usage never goes above normal (rarely goes above 0%), and memory is within sain range (~20MB).
I have completely uninstalled (removed bookmarks, addons, everything) and reinstalled, and it doesn't help. I have also tried Firefox 4, and 3.5 both have the same issue.
This tells me it's something with my boxes setup, but I'm not sure where to look. Any help would be appreciated.

    Solved it.
Apparently, the check box "remove all personal/user data" in the uninstall does not actually "remove all personal/user data". That really should be addressed. I had to:
    1. Uninstall Firefox
    2. Delete %USERDATA%/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox
    3. Reinstall Firefox
Now it works. (I'm posting from Firefox.) Apparently, something was corrupted.

  • Firefox freeze whenever tired to change language input

Hi. Whenever I tried to change language input to enter other languages Firefox freeze (program not responding).
It happens as soon as I hit alt+shift or when I click language bar to select other language.
It also happens with several languages (that I tested, might be all), and I tried various input software/mode including windows default, all freeze. Reset Firefox under help does not work either.
This issue occur with Firefox and Chrome, but not IE... Might not be Firefox problem as it happen w Chrome, but and ideas please? Thanks.

    Edit:
    * regedit might be changed, but do not believe touched internet setting.
    * I can enter foreign language as long as I set that language to default, and do not change to other language in the language bar. Currently I am using foreign language input software as default, and switch to English input '''within '''that software.

Hi. karaoke I am not sure if its the same issue. The crash at language switch on my computer was due to the IME for Eastern Language Banks (Language option -> Detail under text services and input languages -> Properties -> reset/untick auto learn).
If you are not using Eastern Language IME... I am sure others here have more experience and can better help you. =)

I have the newest firefox and the flash debug version. Whenever there is  an flash error happen, the error message window popup, and then my  firefox freeze immediately. It seems like the problem only happen on  debug version of flash. I searched online, people said change the "dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs" to -1 will fix the problem, but I tried, it doesn't really fix it. Anyone know anything I could try to fix it?
    Thanks.

When i play flash videos Firefox freezes. frames is lagging but the sound is ok.

Can't anyone just make a FU$%&# browser that works? I do not understand why I have to come on a forum and try this...or maybe that...or wait maybe this... just to be able to do what a browser is supposed to do..BROWSE THE INTERNET!
I switched over to Firefox from Chrome because Shockwave kept crashing non-stop while trying to listen to music on Soundcloud and now I have another browser that does the same thing except worse as far as I'm concerned because I have to restart the whole program.
I guess I just don't understand how it can be this difficult to accomplish tasks that seem so trivial in nature...the internet has been around for quite a while now and technology is evolving ever faster by the day but for some reason it seems that the reliability of web browsers is decreasing just as fast in the opposite direction.
Please excuse my frustration......I just wanna be able to listen to a whole DJ mix just one time. Is that really too much to ask? I can't even believe that I might have to resort back to IE...oh man...I thought things were moving forward but apparently I have been looking in the rear view mirror this whole time

  • Firefox freezes ALOT

Firefox freezes up on me alot. Ive had this problem before then it was fine, then a few days ago when Gnome 2.18 came out and I updated it started again. It froze on me at least 15 times yesterday, and already 5 or 6 times today. Any suggestions or thoughts on what the problem might be?

Well well, looks familiar to me, unfortunately... I had the same thing going on since I had to reinstall Arch yesterday (due to a HD crash), and since then I get these kind of errors when I'm visiting certain webpages (always the same ones). If I start firefox from a console, it tells me (in german) about a "Speicherzugriffsfehler", i.e. a memory allocation failure. Uninstalling FF, deleting all its remaining directories and reinstalling didn't fix this. I then downloaded FF from the mozilla page, and extracted it to a folder. No errors so far
    Really strange...

  • Firefox freezes for at least 5 seconds when opening context menus

Well I've been looking for a reason to switch to Chrome... I guess now i have one.
Problem: Firefox freezes for 5 seconds when opening context menus (screen goes gray for @3s)
    Firefox 32
    Ubuntu 12.04
I first noticed it this morning when I tried to open up a Bookmark menu. Continued testing and found that right-clicking(anywhere) caused the same behavior. There are tons of posts going back years of similar behavior (although I doubt they're all related), so I ran therough the standard troubleshooting steps (restarting firefox after each step):
    * cleared the caches
    * Lowered cache memory allocation
    * Created a new profile (did not carry-over any previous bookmarks or add-ons)
    * Restarted firefox in safe-mode.
    * Reset firefox (from safe-mode command)
Restarting firefox with all add-ons disabled is not included here because that is assumed in 'created a new profile' (correct?).
Furthermore, when I went to reinstall I got the error: "E: I wasn't able to locate a file for the firefox package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package."
I don't know what happened over the weekend, but I guess I'll try a full manual reinstall, when I have more time to mess with it. FF has been a primary tool for development, but for now it's dead to me.
P.S. On an unrelated issue. Maybe I'm old-school, but I miss the original drop-down menus up top. I don't think there's anything wrong with improving on the existing model, but why would you replace something that's worked well for DECADES.

Thanks for your response and sorry for the delay in my rep[ly.
Today I tested the Linux-64 version (Firefox 33) from the link you suggested. There weren't any install instructions or a README, but based on the file-system layout I guess it just needs to be extracted. I downloaded and extracted to my Downloads directory and ran the executable via command-line as my user (not root).
Firefox popped up right away, but it was not usable for at least 30s. It asked to import from Chrome which I did (no errors). Every click on the top bar (address bar search, buttons to the right of search, bookmarks toolbar) resulted in a dimming un-dimming sequence of @7s, after which nothing (couldn't focus in the address bar, occasionally the bookmark menu would appear, but was not functional). Basically, it's un-usable.
As I mentioned in an earlier reply, I am having similar problems with Komodo which is apparently also Mozilla based.
Are there any logs I could tail and post that might help track this down?
Not sure what to do at this point.

  • When I open any site related to google, Firefox freezes completely. This includes google homepage, google search and gmail.

I set google as my homepage but firefox freezes totally whenever I open it. If i click a link on an external programme, it opens in Firefox fine, it's only google related sites.

Do you have McAfee Site Advisor installed, that extension has been causing problems particularly with Google. If you have it try disabling it to see if Firefox works. You can also try installing the latest version (3.3.1) of the Site Advisor, that one should work.
Mozilla are planning on blocking older versions of McAfee Site Advisor in Firefox 4 due to the problems they cause.

  • When clicking on links that open in a new window, the links don't open and Firefox freezes in a way. I can navigate the page I am on but cannot click to open a new tab or bookmark.

When navigating the internet, if I come across a web page that has a link to open a picture or program in a new window, if I click on it, it does not open. Firefox immediately looses functionality in that I cannot open a new tab with the mouse wheel, right click to open a new tab, or use my bookmarks in either the drop down or toolbar to navigate away. I can usually still navigate the page that I am on, for example, (https://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/AppEntry/apply-online/appindex.jsp), when it freezes I cannot click on any of the content at the center of the page but I can still use the links from the list on the far left. For an example of the pictures, (http://www.insect-sale.com/), if you click on "New Arrivals" at the top of the page it takes you to a list of products that can only be viewed by clicking on them. Usually a picture of the item would open in a small window but it does not and Firefox freezes. This has also happen when I try a view a degree audit on a school's website where a program would usually open in a new window. The only thing I have been able to find that still functions properly when this happens is the home page button. I can click on it or use the wheel to open it in a tab just fine, but if I try and go anywhere else I cannot. The only way I can get Firefox back to normal is to use the Task Manager and end the process. Another thing I have noticed, that may or may not be related; is that my Norton Internet Security toolbar, that should show up below the bookmarks toolbar and above the tabs, only shows up about 1 out of every 10 times I open Firefox. Some days it doesn't show up at all. If it does show up and I log into Identity Safe, the autofill for the programed website works, even if the toolbar doesn't show up the next time I open Firefox.

    Go to Tools->Options->Apps
Here you should see two columns: Content Type on the left, Actions on the right.
Find and select excel spreadsheet or any other content type in the left column. There should be a corresponding action in the right column. What is it? You can use the drop-down list to select the option you want:
Always Ask - Firefox will ask each time: What do you want to do with this file?
Save file - Firefox will save this file to your computer
Use - Firefox will give this file to the program to open it
In case of saving, Firefox will either prompt you every time where you want the file to be saved, or save it to the default location. It depends on the preference in

  • Firefox freezes trying to download or save files, Import/Export bookmarks, clicking (Tools) Options (was: Fire Fox crashes in Windows safe mode and in Firefox Safe mode)

    Hi
    XP sp3 4gb ram
    Firefox 6.0.2
Firefox crashes every time I do any of the following. Then I have to force quit Fire fox.
If i click a download link on a web page, Firefox freezes the instant I click the link
...but Firefox does not freeze if I click a web link on a web page or page navigation link.
If i go to the Menu bar > Tools > Options, Firefox freezes the instant I select Options from the Tools menu.
...but Firefox does not freeze if select any other item from the Tools menu.
If I go to the Menu bar > File, Firefox instantly freezes the instant I select either "Save Page as..." or "Open file..."
...but Firefox does not freeze if I select any other option from the File menu such as: New Tab, New Window, Send Link, page Setup, Print, Exit etc
If I go the Menu Bar > Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup, Firefox instantly freezes the second I select "Import" or "Export"
... but Firefox does not freeze if I select any other command in the Bookmarks sub menus, nor does it freeze if I back out of the menu entirely.
Same as above for History if I select "Import" or "Export"
...so I have isolated the problem to a limited number of commands in Firefox that cause Firefox to freeze... described above. Everything else in Firefox works fine.
HERE IS A SUMMARY OF WHAT CAUSES THE FREEZING:
    • Clicking a download link on a webpage
    • Going to the Menu Bar > File and selecting "save as" or "Open File"
    • Going to the Menu bar > Tools and selecting Options.
    • Going to Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup and selecting either "Import" or "Export"
    • Same as above for History if I select "Import" or "Export"
Everything else in Firefox works fine. I went through every menu command and checked for freezes. Only the commands I mentioned above cause the freezing.
I tried the following to try to fix it:
    • Reset my modem and router (Problem still exists)
    • Uninstalled FF. Deleted folders, profiles (Downloads.sqlite), Registry entries. Reinstalled. (Problem still exists)
    • Restarted FF in Firefox safe mode. (Problem still exists)
    • Restarted in Windows Safe mode and then started FF in Firefox safe mode (Problem still exists)
    • Disabled Window firewall. Disabled ZoneAlarm firewall, Shutdown ZoneAlarm firewall. Set Internel Options to default settings. (Problem still exists)
    • I reset the config option: browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone to false
    What does work?
    • Firefox does not crash when I click a link an go a website, navigate a page, use a menu item command.
    • Firefox works fine on my other computer.
    • Internet Explorer works fine on the computer that Firefox is having a problem on.
    • My other applications work fine on the computer that Firefox is having a problem on.
I want to add that, I just overcame the XP Recovery Virus by following a post that suggested running the following software to fix the virus. Everything seems back to normal except Firefox.
The software I ran to fix the problem are listed below:
    • malwarebytes
    • superantispyware
    • ccleaner
    • combofix.
    • smart defrag
    • then load a good anti-virus. (I ran Zone Alarm virus scan)

    Hi.
This is about a question you posted to the Firefox Support forum three months ago (I'm sorry you never got an answer).
Did you ever fix the problem where Firefox freezes or hangs, when clicking a download link or using (File menu) "save as" or "open file"? Or when going to the Firefox (Tools) menu and clicking Options ? Or trying to Import or Export bookmarks?
I found this thread searching for a solution for someone on MozillaZine's support forum who's having a similar issue. See this thread: (maybe something he's tried that didn't work for him will work for you?)

    Try deleting cookies and cache:
    1. Tools| Clear recent history
    2. Time range to clear: Everything
    3. If it isn't already selected, select '''Cookies''' and '''Cache'''
    4. '''Clear now'''
    '''Check cookie exceptions'''
    1. Tools | Options | Privacy Panel
    2. Set '''Firefox will: Use custom settings for history.''' '''Insure Accept cookies for sites and accept third-party cookies''' is selected
    3. Click '''Exceptions'''. If the misbehaving site is in that list, select it and click '''Remove site'''
    '''Safe Mode'''
Add-ons can cause problems with not being able to log into certain websites. To see if this is the case with your issue, run [[Safe mode]]. When you get to the safe mode window, select Continue in Safe Mode. If this resolves your problem, see [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

  • Live Chat won't work and Firefox freezes as soon as I open it and click on something once but if I then open a second Firefox window it seems to work OK.

I had drafted a message about my Firefox freezing up when opened and, before I hit "Post Question," I tried to check to see what add-ons I have. Somehow that opened a new page on top of the one I was on. When I tried to back up to my message to hit the "Post Question" button, I got this screen which doesn't ask for my username and e-mail address and seems to assume my message got sent. So here's the question: Is this the first or second question you've received from me? If the first, then I have to find a way to start over.
While I'm asking question, why is it so hard to find out in Firefox 4.0 what add-ons I have installed? And why can't I go forward and back in any tab to any of the screens opened under that tab? 4.0 should be an improvement, not a degradation.
    Thank you.

The "Use custom settings for history" selection allows to see the current history and cookie settings, but selecting this doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.
Firefox shows "Use custom settings for history" as an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes were made.
If all History settings are default then the custom settings are hidden and you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History".
"Never Remember History" means that Private Browsing is active and "Always use private browsing mode" gets a checkmark.
You need to remove the checkmark on "Always use private browsing mode" to leave Private Browsing mode or chose the "Remember History" setting.

  • Firefox freezing, and eventually crashing when opening a tab?

Just yesterday this started, at first youtube videos froze the browser (but I could still hear them playing) and now I can't even open a tab without firefox freezing and just eventually having to end the process. It was working perfectly before yesterday.

Can you run Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]? If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.
Also, please go to the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page. Some of them are out of date and you'll need to update those first before we can proceed further.
By the way, you can view Youtube videos in HTML5 now instead of in Flash. All you need to do is to click the link at the foot of this page: http://www.youtube.com/html5 There's nothing to download and you don't have to fill in any forms. The player will switch automatically once you click that link.
