Firefox hangs 4 out of 5 startups

== Issue
==
I have another kind of problem with Firefox
== Description
==
I have used versions 3.5.6 through 3.6.3. All versions hang exactly the same on most startups. I have to reopen in safe mode, then reopen again in normal mode before it will open without freezing. Sometimes I attempt to reopen in normal mode and it takes at least 4 or 5 attempts before I am successful loading Firefox. I have had basically the same extensions since before this problem started and have either uninstalled or disable any new extensions. I've removed all third party plugins. except shockwave and futuresplash (not even sure what that one is, google is not my friend!)
Firefox has always failed to start at some point, but for the last couple months it's been almost every time. Perhaps it's a setting in my about config?

I have done extensive testing with all 17 of my extensions. I opened firefox 100 times with each extension enabled progressively (average test was 6 times per extension enabled). Lastpass caused the browser to hang both by itself and in combination with all other extensions. Firefox ONLY hung when this extension was enabled.
I suggest that Mozilla force Lasspass to debug their product before allow users to install their addon. It's unfortunate as it is one I rely upon heavily.

  • Firefox hangs on startup in normal mode and safe mode, won't start in reset mode

    using FF 26.0
    using windows 7 home premium v 6.1 (latest)
    My problems started after loading FF 26.0. If I start FF in regular mode it hangs. Same thing happens when I start in safe mode. I can shut FF down (while it is hung) by clicking the X in the top right corner.
    When I start FF in safe mode and choose reset FF, it hangs without FF ever appearing; I have to shut it down using task manager. After shutting down in reset mode, I can start FF in regular mode and everything works fine. However, stopping FF does not shut it down. I have to use task manager to shut it down. Then I am back to square one when trying to start FF, i.e. reset firefox, hangs, task manager shut down, then start FF.
    When FF is running, I can open a new FF window.All my addons are up to date. I have reinstalled FF 26.0, three or four times.
    I have cleared cache and cookies.
    I have scanned for viruses and rootkits etc. with microsoft security essentials and spybot.
    I have been a happy user of FF for more than a decade and have never had a problem like this. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Firefox hangs instantly on startup, tried restart/re-install/updated utilities/safemode. Can't open up the profile menu from terminal.

    Pretty much what the question says, I've done everything the support guide says to no avail. Tried looking up solution, nothing has worked so far. Firefox hangs within 5-10 seconds of opening. Everything is up to date and safe mode hangs as well.
    Anything I should try?

    Try to completely uninstall firefox, that means to '''delete''' the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory#Windows Installation directory] located for your 64bit in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ , also, '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox and '''if exist''', '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
    then download and install again a new full installer from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
    disable firewall and antivirus and antispyware for a little bit, and run firefox. any luck ?
    thank you

    A few times a week
    == Not sure when it statrted

    Hi.
    When this happens, please press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and see how much RAM and CPU Firefox is using. If they're sky high, then... Well, that kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
    #run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
    #update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
    #enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
    #you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons.
    Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
    #do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
    #disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix you issues with Firefox, proceed;
    #check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
    #check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

  • Firefox hangs when I visit a wordpress 3.1 page in a theme and update it

    Hi,
    I use wordpress 3.1. I use a theme and sometimes (unexpectedly) when I try to update the page firefox hangs. Sometimes I can force quit, sometimes not. Upon restart it signals another version is running, this is not the case. I cannot find the file in the library section of my mac to remove the profiles file, because it is not visible as such
    All other browsers do not respond anymore. I have to restart my computer. On my Iphone I do have internet so this is not my network
    I tried installing, deinstalling and even updating to the beta and going back to cureent version again...
    Please HELP I am going nuts ;-)

    Hi Jumpman,
    Thank you for your question. In order to clarify: the mobile bookmarks have their own folder by default. Check out the Bookmark Manager in Show all Bookmarks.
    Also, there is a new version of sync. Make sure you are all set up with the new account with these instructions: [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]]

  • Why does Firefox hang when I try to open yahoo? It also hangs after I use it for a little bit.

    When I try to open yahoo Firefox will hang and when I try to restart it will close but stay running. It seems to have started when yahoo went to the new version.I reset my screen resolution to 1152 by 864 pixels like yahoo said no difference. Firefox will also hang if I go to several web sites with out going to yahoo. I changed my home page to Hotmail instead of yahoo and it will open just fine. Any help will be appreciated. Rodney. • Firefox hangs -- no fixes work -- even if I uninstall it, it stays open in task manager!

    UPDATE 2: Disregard update 1: The problem's still there: If the computer goes into sleep or hibernate, Firefox hangs when I wake it up and the problem proceeds as described. I think it's something to do with Firefox sync and/or various add-ons. I suppose I should now try the long process of gradually allowing sync permissions and add-ons until I find the particular one(s) that are causing the problem but I'd prefer not to! Any other sugestions?
    UPDATE: This problem now seems to be fixed. I tried a clean install and it seems to be working, so far. The only difference is I'm no longer using AdBlock plus (coincidentally and unrelatedly), so it's possible that's what was causing the problem.
    I'm running the latest vesion of Firefox on Windos 7 (32bit). It always works fine for the first few webpages but then hangs forever. Specifically, it appears to be loading the webpage, but nothing happens, not even the 'failed to load page'.
    If at this point I close Firefox, it gives me the 'Firefox is running but not responding' message. If I try and close Firefox from task manager (which continues to show it using a big chunk of memory -- bigger than when it's actually running!), nothing happens.
    At this point I'd tried all the obvious things: Refreshing Firefox, disabling add ons, etc. (there's no reason this should've been the problem since I use sync to run Firefox on Android and on another Windows 7 computer (64bit)). So I tried to uninstall Firefox, then reinstall it. When I went to run my newly-installed browser... Firefox was STILL running! I tried this again, from scratch, and found that it really was still open according to Task Manager, despite not appearing in the list of installed programs in the Control Panel!
    So to summarise:
    1) Firefox stops working after a while and hangs
    2) It refuses to close even if it isn't actually on the PC anymore
    3) The only way for me to fix this, so far, is to reboot my computer every time Firefox hangs... Which is all the time.

    Anyone with very similar problems, please see my posts above.

    ===Hi berndf,===
    Sorry you are having problems.
    I know this can not be affecting everyone. I have tried Fx36.0.1 on Windows 7 and do not notice any particular problems, although it may possibly sometimes take a few minutes for Firefox to fully close down. I do not think there is a very big surge in this sort of question being seen on the forum.
    If you don't mind please start your own question, that way we get your full details and can try to solve your problem.
    It is probable that there are multiple possible causes of this sort of issue.
    I often try to avoid using Windows. Must admit I am not sure why processes may exist but not allow Task Manager to kill them (Presumbly we are talking ''firefox.exe'' here running under your own user name and not some system process)
    That is straying into a Windows topic, but it is directly relevant. Any Windows expert wish to enlighten me please ?

  • Firefox hangs many times..

    Firefox hangs many times.It's very annoying. It crashes after a pop up which says :
    (Warning: Unresponsive Plugin; Shock wave flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding.)
    I updated the flash player another day but still this problem continued. Some other day a similar kind of pop up came but it didn't said anything about Shock wave flash but it is a script problem.Firefox always hangs because of some script problem. When i open Windows media player, Photoshop on the other side..Firefox hangs. I never had any problem with Firefox before.

    The 2 plugins which are out of date are java-deployment-toolkit and Adobe Acrobat.I never use to update them.Can that cause this problem too ?

  • It seems that my firefox hangs/freeze when I'm playing youtube vids, unable to surf at all. When i check task manager it seems to be a plugin container.exe problem? Can someone help me pls..

    My firefox sometimes totally hangs/freezes when i try to replay a youtube video. I click the play button but the whole firefox juz hangs. When i try to end task it, i noticed a firefox "plugin container.exe" process.. So i figure it might be a plugin problem? I hope someone can help me with this..
    Its getting very irritating and i love using firefox for web surfing.
    Thanks in advance for ur help

    YouTube videos use the Flash plugin. You can test your Flash plugin and see what version is installed by going to [http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Adobe's Flash Player test page]. To update Flash to the latest version, see [[Managing the Flash plugin]].
    Starting in Firefox 3.6.4, Flash is loaded in a separate plugin-container process. For the background, see the articles [[What is plugin-container]] and [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins Plugin-container and out-of-process plugins (MozillaZine KB)].
    If Firefox hangs when playing Flash videos at YouTube, it could be a video driver issue, Try turning off hardware acceleration in your [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player display settings] (visit any page that uses Flash, such as [http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Adobe's test page], then right-click the Flash animation, select Settings, and uncheck "Enable hardware acceleration" on the Display panel). ...More information here:
    *[[Cannot view full screen Flash videos]]

    Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
    You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
    * [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
    [http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
    Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.

    How To Fix Ntdll.dll Errors
    Try the below solutions one at a time.
    * Unplug removable devices
    * Restart your computer. The ntdll.dll error you're receiving could be due to a one-time, temporary issue and a simple reboot may resolve the problem completely.
    * Reinstall the program if the ntdll.dll error only displays when you use a specific program.
    **If the software program has any updates or service packs available, install them too. The software's programmers may have identified an issue with the program that caused the ntdll.dll error and then issued a patch for it.
    **Note: Third party software programs that have been installed on your computer are almost always the cause of ntdll.dll errors. The remainder of these troubleshooting steps resolve ntdll.dll issues only rarely.
    * Check the Windows service pack level you're running and then check Microsoft's support site to see if there is a more recent service pack available for installation. Some issues that caused ntdll.dll errors have been corrected in these service packs from Microsoft.
    * Selectively disable Internet Explorer add-ons. If your ntdll.dll error is displaying when you start, run, or close Internet Explorer, an add-on may be causing the problem. Disabling each add-on, one by one, will determine which add-on is the culprit (if any).
    **Note: As a workaround, assuming the ntdll.dll error really is Internet Explorer related, install and use a competing browser like Firefox.
    * Rename the NLSPATH system variable. If your Windows system does not have this environment variable, skip this step.
    **Note: This is a troubleshooting step for this issue only. Be sure to set this path back to its original name if this does not resolve the ntdll.dll issue.
    * Disable Data Execution Prevention for Explorer.exe. As in the previous step, this is for troubleshooting the ntdll.dll issue only. If this doesn't resolve the problem, return the Data Execution Prevention settings to their previous settings.
    * Update drivers for any hardware in your computer where updated drivers are available. Outdated drivers sometimes cause ntdll.dll errors.
    * Test your memory for damage. If you're receiving ntdll.dll messages, one possible cause could be a bad memory module in your system. Testing your memory will either identify a problem or clear your RAM of any responsibility.
    * Replace your memory if it fails any of your tests.
    * Ntdll.dll errors could occur if you have an Iomega Zip drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive inside your computer. If so, move the Zip drive to a dedicated IDE controller.
    * Replace the IDE cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard. If this cable is damaged or malfunctioning, one symptom could be the ntdll.dll error you're seeing.
    * Repair your installation of Windows. If individual software reinstallations fail to resolve the problem, a repair installation of Windows will replace the ntdll.dll file.
    * Perform a clean installation of Windows. A clean installation will completely remove Windows from your PC and install it again from scratch. I don't recommend this option unless you've exhausted all previous troubleshooting ideas and you're comfortable that the ntdll.dll error is not caused by a single program (Step #2).
    **Note: If a single program or plugin is causing the ntdll.dll error, reinstalling Windows and then reinstalling all of the same software may lead you right back to the same ntdll.dll error.
    * While extremely rare, if everything else has failed, including the clean installation from the last step, you could be dealing with a hardware issue with your hard drive.
    **If so, replace the hard drive and then perform a new installation of Windows.

    Back buttons and back function in pulldown menu is greyed out. When I try to flush my history cache, firefox hangs up and eventually responds with "script" error. PC running Windows XP

    A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

    Hello,
    '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
    ''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
    ''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
    '''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
    ''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
    ''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Firefox hangs when I close a PDF file that a website had opened at my request.

    Windows 64 bit Vista OS. Everything works fine until I close a site opened PDF file. Then Firefox hangs and must be closed and Firefox processes must be ended with Windows Task Manager. Only then will Firefox reload.

    In case you did not know, yours is not the current version. Try Firefox
    in safe mode. Let us know how you do.

  • Firefox hangs when opening any context menu - save as, download window, options window, etc

    this is the third time i've had this problem with firefox...
    firefox hangs when trying to download images, files, etc. the right click context menu opens (with bookmark, save page, save image, etc options) but after selecting an option, save image or whatever, the actual save as dialogue box doesn't open and firefox locks up.
    many pages say to open the download pane and clear the history... i can't do that as trying to open the download pane locks it up, too. as does trying to open any other dialogues.
    the first time this happened the only solution i could find was a total wipe and re-install (simple uninstall/re-install didn't work... it had to be weeded out of the registry manually).
    the second time i just happened to be rebuilding my system, so i just did a fresh install on a fresh OS.
    this time i can't seem to resolve the problem with uninstall and re-install...
    help?

    found out what was doing it!
    after trying firefox safe mode and windows safe mode and any number of other things i'd kinda given up for a bit there, but i woke from a dream in the middle of the night thinking "based on the behaviour involved it *must* be something in the shell that's causing this." (sorry, i dream in geek.)
    so i grabbed a shell viewer editor - ShelleExView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html) (had to use an icky, lesser browser to be able to download it) and gave it a run.
    i listed all the extensions by the date they were added as a clsid and tried to think back to when the problem began... about a month or so after a fresh system reinstall. and through a little trial and error disabling i found the culprit.
    it was an icon overlay handler put in by something called WagerLogic. after looking into the company name i'm going to have to assume this was related to one of the annoying "come lose real money at our virtual casino" pop-ups that infest the net nefariously panning for an easy mark like dickensian orphans.
    i disabled it et voila! firefox is back to full function again.

  • Firefox hangs after first Google Page Loaded

    Firefox recently has starting hanging in Google after the first page of a search is displayed. IE runs fine
    I have Firefox 3.6.6.
    What is happening? I cannot continue to use a product that doesn't work
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == within last few days

    Update
    Ok so after uninstalling quicktime then scrubbing the hard drives for any and all associated files/folders and then cleaning the registry, rebooting then reinstalling quicktime it works, but only 60 % of the time (seems as though if you have opened any kind of drop down list or used a diff plugin on that page already the quicktime plugin and firefox hang. If you open the page and use the quicktime plugin before anything else it semms to be ok.
    Zsolto Chrome really!!!!! With the amount of information gathered by Google and the things they do with it which are borderline criminal if not criminal why on earth would you use such a program???
    There is an open source version out there created by other people that is just as good and doesn't monitor your every move.
