Firefox hangs after putting Macbook to sleep

Firefox hangs after MacBook Pro is put to sleep. MAC OS X Snow Leopard. Normal service restored after force quit.

This keeps happening to me as well on my brand new MBP.
I suspect it has something to do with Panorama/Tab Groups.
Most of the time after sleep FF won't respond, but when it finally does I usually switch to another Tab Group.
The zoom animation for Panorama will freeze halfway through & I'll have to force quit.
Funny thing is even with the Panorama animation frozen, I can still use the file menu & save my session with the Session Manager add-on.

  • IMac shuts down after putting it to sleep

Lately, my iMac G5 has been shutting down automatically after putting it to sleep. If I wake it up within a short period of time it is OK, but if I wait several minutes, it must be restarted.
Did I accidentily change a setting? Or is it a problem with the hardware?
Is there a setting I can check? I have tried to find one in Energy Saver and other places without success.
    Thanks,
    -tee

Welcome to Discussions - Please tell us which model G5 iMac you have (iMac release dates).I don't think you changed anything, I would suggest that you reset the SMU and see if that helps.
    Please post back,

  • Why did F4 beta uninstall itself after I put MacBook to sleep and had to be rebooted from the disc image?

I put my MacBook to sleep with Firefox 4 beta open and when I went to use it again it had vanished. My spotlight search yielded v. 3.6 and the v.4 beta installation file (.dmg). I opened v. 3.6 and declined to transfer v4 Add-ons . All tabs that were opened on v.4 beta opened on v. 3.6. I closed 3.6 and reinstalled v.4 beta from the disc image. I was warned to replace previous version (3.6) - which I did. V4 beta installed intact (bookmarks, add-ons, history etc.) but I lost my open tabs. My only concern is that I was required to replace v. 3.6 and don't want to risk losing bookmarks and history if v. 4 proves unstable. I am otherwise pleased with the new look and performance.

Yes, your iPhone has the classic signs of early onset Alzheimer's...
Assuming that nothing is pressing on the Home button when this occurs, try the basic steps as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
    3. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.
If #3 doesn't help, there is a hardware problem such as a defective home button, and you should make an appt. with an Apple Store Genius bar.

  • When can i remove batt after putting MBP to sleep?

I know the computer will save the memory, perhaps i can call it "hibernate" when i put it on sleep. how long after i put it to sleep can i remove the power cord and battery?

After you put the computer to sleep there is no need to remove the battery (nor the A/C power for that matter.)
The computer will not automatically hibernate. Only if the computer is dropped or receives some sudden motion will the computer go into hibernation to protect the hard drive.
If you want the computer to hibernate rather than go into normal sleep you will need to change the safe sleep parameter. To do that you need to use the Terminal app (Utilities folder.) Use this command line:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X
where X is the desired parameter:
= 0 : Default sleep behavior on most Apple computers. RAM is still powered on while sleeping. Wake up is fast. Safe sleep is disabled.
= 1 : Hibernation behavior. System is totally shut down while sleeping. RAM contents are dumped to disk. Wake up is slow.
= 3 : Default behavior on Powerbook HD computers. RAM is still powered on while sleeping. Wake up is fast. Safe sleep is enabled, so RAM contents are also dumped to disk before going to sleep.
You would want to use "3".

  • My imac turns it self back on almost immediately after putting it to sleep.  Why and how do I fix it?

This is new as of a few days ago.  I can't find anything in preferences to make it better nor did I change any setting.  Not sure what's going on.  The computer seems to be working fine except for that.

It's not supposed to do that, so there is no setting for it.  Be sure you have shut down (powered off) the Mac and started it back up, if you have not since this problem occurred.
If you are manually putting it to sleep, make sure you are not "bumping" the mouse immediately after giving the Sleep command.  Also, does this happen when the Mac goes to sleep due to timed inactivity?
    Resetting the PRAM may help
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
It may also help to reset "power management," which is called PMU, SMU, SMC, and other things depending on Mac model.  The reset procedure depends on iMac model.  If you can post back with the specific iMac model, I can link to the correct procedure.  This is a list of all iMac models
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
A faulty USB device can cause this behavior.  You can try disconnecting all USB devices including hubs, except for standard mouse and keyboard (if used).  See if the problem recurs.

  • Should I put MacBook to sleep or shut it down?

At what time point does it make sense to shut down the MacBook as opposed to putting it to sleep? For instance, if I don't anticipate using it for 48 hours, should I shut it down? Thank you!

My MB only ever gets shutdown/restarted when i do updates, or it is going to be closed in a bag for a long period of time. Otherwise its always put to sleep

  • Not putting Macbook to sleep

Macbook has gotten more sluggish with ML even with 4GB's of RAM when rebooting and waking from sleep. The solution has been not to put it to sleep (other than the hard drive) and this has greatly improved performance. But will this harm the Macbook more than puting it to sleep? The tech I spoke with suggested I do this as he said it would be better than putting it to sleep everytime I walk away from it.

On a full charge and put to sleep the MacBook's battery will last more than 10 days but less than 20. I know this because I forgot to turn my MacBook off before leaving for vacation this summer. I returned 20 days later and found that the computer needed to be plugged in before it would start so I know it won't last 20 full days. Over the winter holiday I intentionally put it to sleep before leaving and 10 days later when I returned it woke up showing under 1/2 a charge left. What I don't know is whether the computer's battery will be depleted on day 11 or in the middle of day 20 or somewhere between! Well, actually I do assume it is close to the 20 day mark than the 11 day mark.
So when should you sleep it as opposed to turning it off? I generally turn it off (when I remember) if I'll be leaving it for more than a week. This has been my habit since buying my first PowerBook back around 1991.

  • Firefox hangs after first Google Page Loaded

Firefox recently has starting hanging in Google after the first page of a search is displayed. IE runs fine
    I have Firefox 3.6.6.
What is happening? I cannot continue to use a product that doesn't work
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == within last few days

    Update
Ok so after uninstalling quicktime then scrubbing the hard drives for any and all associated files/folders and then cleaning the registry, rebooting then reinstalling quicktime it works, but only 60 % of the time (seems as though if you have opened any kind of drop down list or used a diff plugin on that page already the quicktime plugin and firefox hang. If you open the page and use the quicktime plugin before anything else it semms to be ok.
Zsolto Chrome really!!!!! With the amount of information gathered by Google and the things they do with it which are borderline criminal if not criminal why on earth would you use such a program???
There is an open source version out there created by other people that is just as good and doesn't monitor your every move.

  • Firefox hangs after answering yes to Firefox 4 upgrade

Today when My wife started Firefox from her account she was presented with a window asking if she wanted to update to Firefox 4. She answered yes. At that point Firefox (v3.6.16) became unresponsive with no indication that anything was happening. After some time she tried to shut down Firefox by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the window. She then got the Windows End Program box stating that the program was not responding and allowing her to shut the program down.
She then restarted Firefox and after what seemed to be a normal start up with the home page being displayed, Firefox would again hang after selecting a bookmarked site.
When my wife called my attention to this problem, I decided to try it from my Windows XP account to see if the problem only happened in her account. When I first opened Firefox, I briefly saw a progress bar indicating Firefox was being updated. Firefax then opened and loaded two tabs, my home page which is set to the google.com/firefox start page and the same Firefox 4 anouncement page that my wife got when she first started Firefox. When I then selected most bookmarked web sites or even the Firefox Support link on the home page, Firefox would hang and require ending the task to exit. Terminating Firefox in this manner, and restarting Firefox produced the same result. Rebooting the PC after terminating Firefox also produced the same result. Using IE8 to visit the same web sites was successful and resulted in no hangups. In fact, I am currently using IE8 to post this question.
After restarting and trying many web sites, I did find some sites that opened normally. One was the About Mozilla link on the home page and another was a local weather site: wunderground.com.
I also ran Firefox in safe mode from the command line and got the same hanging which I understand indicates that the problem is not being caused by any plugins or extensions.
Any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestions. As it turned out Firefox seemed to fix itself!!! First I must add that I don't believe that my wife clicking on the Firefox 4 update button had anything to do with the hangups. There was no indication that anything had been downloaded. Firefox would start normally but hang when trying to load most web sites. Usually a progress bar would be displayed at the bottom of the page that would never completely load. Clicking on the "Stop loading this page" button would only result in the Firefox symbol at the top left corner turning to a white square and Firefox would become non-responsive requiring an end task to shut down. It acted like an Internet problem but as I reported before, when I tried the same sites in IE they loaded properly. Also rebooting had no immediate effect.
As I kept trying in my account, more and more web sites started to load properly. After a couple of days, there were no more hang ups occurring at all in my account. The only changes I had made was to disable a couple of extensions: DownloadHelper and Freecorder Community Toolbar in my account. These were never installed in my wife's account and had no immediate effect after disabling them. Unfortunately, Firefox would still hang in my wife's account. She had changed the default browser to IE and when I opened Firefox in her account I got the message box asking if I wanted to change the default to Firefox. At that point clicking on anything resulted in a hang as before. I even tried setting the default browser back to Firefox in Windows "Set Program Access and Defaults" and rebooting but got the same result when I tried running Firefox again.
Now, after doing nothing to Firefox for a couple of days, Firefox is working correctly in both accounts??? I did notice a lot of hard drive activity during the time I was working this problem. Hmmm.
I use Norton 360 v4 as my security protection on this machine. They have now released v5 which I am about to upgrade to. I wonder if their LiveUpdate was doing something that affected Firefox?
I think I will wait awhile before trying to update to Firefox 4.

  • Firefox hangs after a few minutes and freezes whole system -- tried all the help suggestions already

I just updated to the latest version of Firefox and now it hangs after a few minutes of use (maybe when using Facebook)...I tried all of the existing help suggestions and none of them worked. Once it hangs, I can no longer use my machine as it freezes everything. I have to shut down...and even that takes forever to happen. :(

    Hello cswatson,
Try clearing your Java cache, and History.
If you're not sure how to do that go here. --> [http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml I'm a Link].
If you still have problems, and are running a 64 bit processor you may want to install Waterfox instead of Firefox. On the case that you are running a 32 bit operating system do not install Waterfox. However, if you are running a 64 bit operating system you may want to install Waterfox. If you do install you should update your plugins on the Waterfox Download page below.

  • Powerbook G4 17" hangs after display goes to sleep.

My 1.0 GHZ, 17" PB G4 has been locking up after the display sleeps. I do not have any other energy saver options selected. I can hear the fan(s) running, but she is totally unresponsive.
Using 10.5.5, 1 gig Apple RAM, airport is off.
I reset the PMU using the Shift-Control-Option-Power combo once.

    Stephen,
No help here, sorry, but you're not alone. My 1.33 17" has been having the same trouble for months. It was consistent a few months ago, but now it's only occasional. I have no idea what causes it and, like you, have gone through various attempts at fixes (PRAM, PMU, taking out RAM, etc.). I'm happy the problem has reduced itself, but I don't understand it. My only wild guess: I had a bad power adaptor which actually sometimes turned the computer totally off, a few weeks ago. (Spent who knows how many hours diagnosing that!) Since I replaced the adaptor I have not had the hang-after-sleep problem. Could these be related? Possibly. Wish I could help more.

  • Putting MacBook to sleep

    Hi
Sorry, if this has been asked before. I have been told that I should just put my mac to sleep when I am done. Why is this? I am used to turning off my pc when I am done.
Is it safe to travel with my Macbook in sleep?
Does the OS do system maintainance when it is in sleep?
I know there is very similiar posts which will answer my Q. If someone could point me in the right direction.
    Thanks
    David

Putting your MacBook to sleep is the same as putting a PC in standby. It will use a small amount of power while in sleep which, over a period of a few days, will probably drain your battery. If you're going to be away from a charger for a while, you can still shut down your MacBook to save power. When a PC is running Windows, a restart now and then helps to flush the system of a bunch of junk. You dont' really need to worry about that in OS X. There really isn't any harm in shutting down your MacBook if you choose to do so... there just isn't a need to.

  • Putting macbook to sleep only

Is it ok to not shut down the macbook for a week? i mean just putting it to sleep even overnight so when i open it the next morning it would be faster?

It wastes electricity, but I think it should be alright. Not very sure.

  • Beachball and hanging after putting old hard drive into new MacBook Pro

    Hi there,
I really hope to find some help here.
    The situation:
I had a MacBook Pro Early 2008 running Lion (10.7.5) until it died about a week ago (mainboard broken).
In this old Macbook Pro I had two hard drives: 128GB SSD and 1TB SATA 5400.
I bought a second hand MacBook Pro Late 2011 on ebay and upgraded the Ram to 16 GB.
Then I put the two hard drives in the new MacBook Pro Late 2011.
The Macbook is super fast and very responsive but every couple of minutes it is hanging for a few seconds or I get a beachball randomly.
This can happen in Finder, Google Chrome, Adobe Dreamweaver, basically anytime using any software.
I tried to create a new account and see if the problem persists. And yes, it does.
I tested the hard drives (disk utility) and the Ram (memtest/terminal) and all is ok with this.
The Macbook Pro Late 2011 comes with a 256 GB SSD and an empty slot for the second hard drive. The Macbook seems to function normal when using the 256GB SSD with Lion installed.
Unfortunately my external backup hard drive is not working anymore so I can't restore from there.
What do you recommend? Would it make sense to make a backup now, take out the 128GB and put in the 256 GB hard drive?
    Please advice!
Thanks for any kind of help in advance!
    Chris

I know people that have been doing things for longer than 10 years and they know jack. Formatting the HD is not really good "advice" in this situation.
I'm not cocksure - you just think I am because I'm disagreeing with you opinion, which you believe to be sacred (because you've been commenting for 10 years?).
So I thank you sir for your opinion but I certainly do not need your luck.
    Later.

  • IMac wakes on its own after putting it to sleep

Just got my iMac back from the shop with a new hard drive put in. After setting it up, it seems to wake from sleep on its own after a few minutes. Only change since before sending it in to be fixed (when i had no issues with sleep) is that I now have it set up to access the internet thru a wireless router. Could that cause the waking up? should i try turning Airport off before sleeping to see if that works?
    Thanks

I'm kind of out of ideas, for now.
Have you tried to repair permissions/disk? I'm not exactly sure how your system is set up, but your wireless internet shouldn't be to blame [in theory]. When you put your iMac to sleep, it should be turning off the AirPort card [along with various other components]. It would be a possibility that if you had your mac hooked in by ethernet and you had something like "Wake on ethernet ring" checked in System Prefs. [that your mac could randomly wake up].
I almost wonder if it's a firmware problem. Or maybe a problem with a Mac OS X update, I'm also contemplating that it could help to download a combined updater and try to install.
    Hmmmm....
I'll think on it. I know there's some idea that I'm missing here which could help, but I just can't get it to come to mind.
