Firefox hangs for about 5 minutes on startup and about that long each time I try to do something. How do I fix this?

My problem is basically that Firefox is deadly slow and unusable because of its slowness. It takes about 5 minutes (I haven't timed it) to bring up a window after I click on the Firefox icon in the dock. It beachballs for a while after the window comes up, and then for about five minutes after I click on the "new tab" button next to the current tab, directly above the address bar.
When I went to get the Troubleshooting Information, it didn't take too long. I was able to click on the Help menu, ask for troubleshooting, wait (a while), and then once the page loaded, I was able to copy the information and scroll around the troubleshooting page without difficulty. Other than that, I haven't had the patience to get to any websites. I'm sending this request from inside Safari.
I used Firefox 24 without any problem. I was unable to automatically upgrade to Firefox 25, so I downloaded it, deleted the old application, and went on my way. I started having this problem, so I took some steps based on the Knowledge Base (not listed in the order I tried them in):
I reset Firefox
I reinstalled Firefox (deleted the old application from the applications folder and dragged in the application from the mounted .dmg again)
I deleted the profile folder
I restarted my computer
I confirmed that I'm not running antivirus software
I verified and repaired my disk with Disk Utility, which showed no errors
I ran Rember (one pass), which showed no errors
I started Firefox in Safe Mode
I have twice now gotten the red bar that says, "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem." I am not running antivirus. I tried renaming places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old (there was no places.sqlite-journal), which prevented the red bar from coming up the next time I started Firefox, but two or three Firefox force-quits and relaunches later, it's back again.
Right now I'm looking at 'top' in Terminal, and here's Firefox:
PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #WQ #POR #MREG RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VPRVT VSIZE PGRP PPID STATE UID
454 firefox 0.0 00:02.80 25 2 183 534 64M 47M 102M 120M 2894M 454 144 sleeping 1049
Could it be a plugin? I'm not sure where to get this information.
I can post logs from Rember and Disk Utility if that would help.
I am also currently trying to load about:crashes, but right now Firefox is trying to load "https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional?blahblahblah" and there is a little thing that says "Looking up support.cdn.mozilla.net..." at the bottom of the window, so I'm waiting for it to give up on that. To give you an idea of how long it's taking, it already was trying to reach this URL when I started writing this.
Thanks in advance!

Here is the new troubleshooting information, if it helps.
