Firefox hangs on link requests, on only 1 of 3 identical machines

We have three identical Ubuntu 10.04 boxes, all running the same version of Firefox; 3.6.18, subtitled "Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu
canonical 1.0". The *only* difference between the two with no problems and the one with this problem is that the problem box
connects to our wired LAN through a wifi router and dongle.
But when I download using the problem box, I get our full DSL
speed end to end, suggesting that there's nothing wrong with the
wifi connection. The Firefox on the problem box ("Barbzilla")
is consistently either very slow to establish a web site connection,
or hangs and never gets there at all. This appears to be equally a problem whether clicking on a link i'''maintenance'''n an email, or actually entering the url in the browser window. Any ideas?

Ok, this is up to date then, and it is only for that website.
If it is all oses, it sounds like the hardware is the same on the comupter that you are testing all these OSs on? If so please see: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding#w_disable-virus-scan-in-firefox-preferences Disable virus scan in Firefox preferences] and [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding#w_troubleshoot-your-extensions Troubleshoot your extensions]
Are you using the same profile? Could it be that the facebook links stored in the places.sqlite file are corrupt? If you do not mind losing history, try to delete that file in the profile folder and restart firefox.

  • Starting Firefox causes mac to request reboot, only option

My MacBook Pro gives me a reboot screen every time I try to load Firefox.  No options, other than the reboot.  Prompt is in many languages.  Have tried loading safemode and then clearing everything, also have deleted and reinstalled.
All solutions cause the same results.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

  • Firefox hangs (at anytime; nothing works/helps; keyboard useless) & constantly get no response/action; I get Firefox "not responding" message at top-left of window.

Firefox hangs at anytime. Nothing works, (mouse/keyboard). Sometimes after 1 or 2 min. it works again, other times it freezes & I must re-boot (cut power & restore power) as keyboard or mouse does not respond. This happens at anytime, not when doing any specific task. Also have an unrelated question: I have have 2 Firefox icons on my desktop & 2 on my bottom toolbar, one reads as "Mozilla Firefox" & one as "Mozilla Firefox (2)". Is it possible I have 2 versions/programs installed & if so, how do I verify & correct this?

You may somehow have installed a second copy of firefox. (I deliberately have multiple versions installed) Have you been trying the Beta or Aurora channels of Firefox ?
You may have just copies the shortcut icons. I use XP but assume Vista is similar, and that if you right click the icons they will allow you to see the properties, that will include the path to the firefox program ''firefox.exe'' . Do both shortcuts point to the same file and location ?
Another possibility is that one icon is for normal use, and another for safe mode, again something you will discover if you study the properties.

  • Firefox hangs, links don't click through, delayed response on some links

Firefox hangs, links don't click through, looong delays on some links

i have been using firefox for many years but now Im getting fed up with pages hanging.. it happens when the page is flash enabled.
i tried ie and chrome and both work properly - I just dont like them.. please fix this!
running win7 on a HP 4310s laptop brand new with all updates installed... my extensions are flashgot, xmarks, image toolbar, java, office, acrobat reader.
I tried safe-mode and it still hangs!
I also noticed that when I have two tabs open or more and I try to close firefox from task manager it will un-hang but only for a while - I cancel the closing and continue using the browser as normal... if during this time I navigate away from the flash enabled page then it continues normally. If I stay on the flash enabled page or open a new one it hangs again shortly after.

  • How do I force all url links to open only in Firefox ?

    OS : WindowsXP-Prof_SP3
    FF version 18.0.2
My default browser is FF, but not quite as expected.
Url links appearing Outlook 2010 messages or appearing in website pages are mostly still opening another browser (AvantBrowser) instead of Firefox.
How can I force links to access only FF ?
In other words how do I prevent to open links in any other browser ?
Most irritating are links appearing in Outlook 2010 messages.
Those links always open in AvantBrowser, which I don't want to uninstall for the moment being.
Despite the fact that I applied both procedures, according Mozilla HELP informations !
    1. Settings within FF itself
    2. Settings within Windows-XP (problem here)
Windows-XP refuses to modify existent current settings to the choices which I want to remain permanent... (as NOT shown in a screenshot I made ; but apparently can't be uploaded here .
After OK and closing all windows, including ControlPanel, nothing has been changed.
Going back to [ControlPanel>...> same window] to check if the option has been changed, my choices are gone and old settings remain unchanged ! Why ???
Like I wrote already procedure described in http://mzl.la/L8LwDs has already been done.

This screenshot shows the settings being asked for, but they are not registered by Windows. Each attempt to 'modify' the settings to new choices fails.
Do I have to restart system or is there some button to confirm the wanted choices ?
After closing this window and coming back to the same window, the settings which were chosen are lost and back again... as they were before.

  • Firefox page images do not display only text and links

New desktop (not this one) with windows 8.1 Pro, Firefox 29, Norton Internet security. When I go to many of the Firefox pages images do not display, only text and links. This is true for the "get add-ons" page. I can search for add-ons, but when I try to install one, the installation fails. Is there a security setting in windows or NIS that is blocking Firefox images and installations? The Firefox installation went smoothly without error. Other sites do not have this problem.

Wow! I never would have thought of that! My time settings were incorrect when I set up the PC, and I thought I set them. I did have the day, date, and time set correctly. But I did not have AM/PM set right. So, I was off by 12 hours. I corrected it and, voila, all works well.
I'm so happy now, because I can now get all the security extensions I've grown to love:
    - NoScript
    - Ghostery
    - Better Privacy
    - Adblock Plus
You guys are great! Thank you so much for your help.

  • Firefox hangs when opening PDF links

I have tried the suggestions, but none of them worked.
If I click on a link to access a PDF file, Firefox hangs.
I seem to be able to download other files OK.

Had the same problem. I went into the Plugins and when I disabled the DocuCom PDF plus plugin the problem stopped. See if you have any plugins or extensions that deal with PDF files and try disabling them and see if the problem resolves.

  • Firefox hangs -- no fixes work -- even if I uninstall it, it stays open in task manager!

UPDATE 2: Disregard update 1: The problem's still there: If the computer goes into sleep or hibernate, Firefox hangs when I wake it up and the problem proceeds as described. I think it's something to do with Firefox sync and/or various add-ons. I suppose I should now try the long process of gradually allowing sync permissions and add-ons until I find the particular one(s) that are causing the problem but I'd prefer not to! Any other sugestions?
UPDATE: This problem now seems to be fixed. I tried a clean install and it seems to be working, so far. The only difference is I'm no longer using AdBlock plus (coincidentally and unrelatedly), so it's possible that's what was causing the problem.
I'm running the latest vesion of Firefox on Windos 7 (32bit). It always works fine for the first few webpages but then hangs forever. Specifically, it appears to be loading the webpage, but nothing happens, not even the 'failed to load page'.
If at this point I close Firefox, it gives me the 'Firefox is running but not responding' message. If I try and close Firefox from task manager (which continues to show it using a big chunk of memory -- bigger than when it's actually running!), nothing happens.
At this point I'd tried all the obvious things: Refreshing Firefox, disabling add ons, etc. (there's no reason this should've been the problem since I use sync to run Firefox on Android and on another Windows 7 computer (64bit)). So I tried to uninstall Firefox, then reinstall it. When I went to run my newly-installed browser... Firefox was STILL running! I tried this again, from scratch, and found that it really was still open according to Task Manager, despite not appearing in the list of installed programs in the Control Panel!
    So to summarise:
    1) Firefox stops working after a while and hangs
    2) It refuses to close even if it isn't actually on the PC anymore
    3) The only way for me to fix this, so far, is to reboot my computer every time Firefox hangs... Which is all the time.

Anyone with very similar problems, please see my posts above.

    ===Hi berndf,===
    Sorry you are having problems.
I know this can not be affecting everyone. I have tried Fx36.0.1 on Windows 7 and do not notice any particular problems, although it may possibly sometimes take a few minutes for Firefox to fully close down. I do not think there is a very big surge in this sort of question being seen on the forum.
If you don't mind please start your own question, that way we get your full details and can try to solve your problem.
It is probable that there are multiple possible causes of this sort of issue.
I often try to avoid using Windows. Must admit I am not sure why processes may exist but not allow Task Manager to kill them (Presumbly we are talking ''firefox.exe'' here running under your own user name and not some system process)
That is straying into a Windows topic, but it is directly relevant. Any Windows expert wish to enlighten me please ?

  • Firefox hangs when trying to save a file, even after removing firefox and reinstalilng afresh

I recently experienced firefox hanging/freezing indefinitely when trying to save files, such as pdf files. The same pdf files open fine within the browser if I do not select "save link as...", but the problem occurs when I try to save such a file. The problem is similar regardless of the file type (e.g., .mp3, .txt). Not only did I go through the recommended solutions that mozilla suggests when file downloads hang, but I uninstalled firefox completely (removing all files with user settings), and then reinstalled firefox afresh without any plugins or add-ons, and I still have the same file save problem. It may also be worth mentioning that this problem does not occur in internet explorer or chrome. Maybe a system file that firefox uses got corrupted (?), but I don't know which one or how to repair it if that indeed is the problem.
My system is running XP, and I have McAfee AV installed (which has not been a problem in the past).

Early on I tried starting firefox in safe mode as one possible fix, and that didn't solve the problem. I just tried again right now with the fresh installation, and still no luck.
    Any other ideas?

  • Firefox Hangs when profile location is Offline Files

    Hi all,
We are having some problems with custom profile locations on windows 7
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -Profile "U:\Firefox\Profile"
We use the above command to launch firefox. The u drive is a drive that is ALWAYS available for all users. This drive is redirected to the home folder of the user. To sync these folders we use Offline files.
During our testing fase we had no problems at all with this method. But in the last week we receive more and more people complaining that firefox hangs. (Read: no error specific error just stops responding and windows asks to close firefox)
In my troubleshooting quest i found that as long as i don't use internet ( so not using our proxy server squid) it all works. But from the moment i try using for example google, firefox stops responding.
The tricky part is that sometimes it happens after 5 minutes, couple of hours, few days.
Once it happened after 5 minutes, the only way to solve it is to delete the profile folder on the U Drive and start over.
So any help on identifying this problem is welcome. If more info is needed let me know what you need.

Well Didn't get an error from Firefox but windows stated that Firefox was not responding: if i click wait then it just keeps running but cant click anything or do anyting.
    When trying about:crashes i get:
Submitted crash reports: no crash reports have been submitted and thats is no items are in there.
For the last thing din't try to run it in safe mode will try to reproduce the problem again and try the safe mode and will post the updates.
    Thanks already for the tips.

  • When I try to send a webpage in Firefox (file-email link), Thunderbird crashes. If I copy & paste same link by hand, it works. Why is this?

When I try to send a web link in Firefox (file-email link), Thunderbird hangs, or I should say the email with the link hangs. The new email shows the link, I add an email address and click send, Thunderbird hangs and never completes the send. I have to copy and paste the link by hand in a new email and then it works. It seems to be an issue regarding how Firefox and Thunderbird are communicating.

Anyway, why don't you just forward the original link to the document, instead of the PDF itself?
