Firefox hangs upon startup, or starts a process but doesn't open the browser.

Within the last couple days, Firefox has had a lot of problems.
When I open it, the window hangs and freezes after a few seconds, if it opens at all. Other times, trying to open Firefox simply won't open the window, but will leave an extra process running in the background that I have to manually shut down via Task Manager.
I have made a fresh profile. I have restarted Firefox. I previously had hardware acceleration checked, and disabled it; still having the same problem. I have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox multiple times. I have run a scan of my system with Malwarebytes; nothing detected. It's not even generating a crash log. I have looked through the support forums, found people with problems similar to mine, but no solutions posted for them since sometime last month.
Firefox seems to run normally if do an install of version 21, which opens up the browser window. Everything works fine, until I close the browser and then re-open it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
To Enable SafeMode
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

• Firefox hangs upon startup

When I try to start firefox it does nothing. Via CLI it does the same - nothing. It just sits there and appears to be hung up. No pid, nada.
Deleted ~/.mozilla and tried to run firefox -profilemanager. Same thing, just hangs.
Tried to run firefox -v just to see if it return the version -no joy. Hangs.
no locks present and did a killall firefox before each attempt.
Uninstalled via yum and reinstalled via yum. Same.
Is there a log file I can view to try to determine whats hanging upon startup?
Thanks in advance for your help.

• I installed Firefox 4.0.1, but when I open the browser, it's clearly still running 3.6...what's wrong/how do I fix it?

I've installed Firefox 4.0.1 on other computers, and it opened just fine...they were running on Windows, whereas this computer is running on Linux, which might be a root of the problem. If this is so, how can this issue be resolved?

It seems like I'm still running Firefox 3.5/3.6...
I installed Firefox 4.0.1 from the Mozilla Firefox main website, and I started it by going to 'Applications' on the computer, then to 'Internet', and then clicked on 'Mozilla Firefox'.
I did not use a desktop shortcut.

• ITunes in processes but doesn't open

I've searched for this but I can't find a answer. I just reinstalled windows XP pro on my dell. I downloaded iTunes but it will not open. It shows up in the processes but that's about it. quicktime opens, the firewall is disabled so it's not blocking it. I do not get any error messages. I've tried several things but nothing has worked. Any ideas?

If you have just reinstalled Windows XP and the latest version of iTunes, then iTunes will make you accept the license agreement first. Is this window coming up behind other windows? What happens if you launch iTunes with the shift key held down? Usually that lets you create or pick a new music library, but if you can't accept the license agreement you probably won't get that far?

• I have loaded the latest update of Firefox 3 times, restarted my computer 3 times and when I open the browser it still says I have an outdated version!!

There is not much more detail I can give! I have tried unsuccessfully 3 times to download firefox 5.01 for mac os. I appears that I have downloaded it and then when I go into the firefox browser - it still says I don't have the most updated version. It is very frustrating!

• Just updated to the newest version of Firefox and it keeps crashing when I open the browser. I tried opening it with add-ons disabled and it still keeps crashing. Crash ID: bp-03b36d11-304e-4f80-ab9e-79b7f2111223

I just updated to the newest version of firefox for my mac laptop. It keeps crashing when I open the browser and does so even in safe mode. Laptop is about two years old. Might it be an issue with the OS? I have not updated to Leopard yet.

It seems that the problem is related to fonts.
(1) How were you updating your operating system ?
If you use *_Software Update_*, hurry up, download and apply the combo updater available from :
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
but CAUTION, this update introduce a serious problem with some fonts. At this time the only workaround available is to reinstall 10.6 tyhen apply the combo updater 10.6.6 available from :
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1349
(2) if you didn't used *_Software Update_*, run a maintenance tool like the free MAINTENANCE available from :
http://www.titanium.free.fr/index_us.html
Apply it to clear caches files, mainly those dedicated to fonts.
It would be also a good idea to check the health of your fonts with FontBook.

• Firefox stopped working and hangs upon startup

First, a problem with iTunes - could not access the iTunes store. Uninstalled iTunes and re-installed, then Firefox hung up, had to close with Task Manager. After that Firefox hangs on startup. Have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox, still hangs on startup. Using Windows 7 OS.

Firefox will not load to start in safe mode - it is just a blank white screen with no radio buttons or icons on it and the circling icon for loading.
I deleted my old profile and uninstalled Firfox and tried downloading again, but the same problem exists. I am currently using IE as my browser, but prefered Firefox (when it worked). It seems the new version is the problem.

• Firefox crashes upon startup

Starting today, every time I try to open Firefox it crashes immediately. I have uninstalled and removed the entire Firefox folder several times. Firefox is able to load in safe mode, but if I have to browse in safe mode I might as well use Google Chrome because it still works and can have addons. The only thing I can think of that I changed recently was I updated my NVIDIA drivers to version 285.79 Beta yesterday. I had 5.0 for the first crash and updated to 8.0.2 thinking it may fix the problem. I do not have any of the programs that frequently cause crashes.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

• How do I stop Firefox from opening the Firefox start page as a tab when I open the browser?

New Dell Laptop and new Firefox download. Have used Firefox for several years. This time it loads the Firefox Start Page automatically as a tab every time I open the browser. I can't find how to turn it off. I did not set it up to do this intentionally.

no, if iTunes can't find its drive/folder, it defaults to creating one within your Home directory's Music folder.
If anyone knows a way I send a product suggestions to apple please let me know, as I have a few that would like to suggest.

• Why does the Welcome to firefox tab open with my google tab every time I open the browser? And why can't the browser hold any add-ons I downloaded? I loose then when I close the browser, even tool bars have to be reinstalled every time I open the browser

Every time I open the browser the Welcome to Firefox tab is the first tab, then a second tab opens and thats my google, then a 3rd tab opens for me to reinstall my toolbar. This has been happening for a good year. Updates have not fixed it. Others have this problem. I did a search for an answer, the question is out there but no answer. Now if I go into add ons and add a background Theme or an extension it all is gone when I exit the browser. When I open the browser again I get all 3 tabs and have to install my toolbar again. I DO NOT want to reinstall as I will loose all my saved data, passwords, bookmarks, everything! I have had this computer for a year, Windows Vista x64 bit. Its not the computer, it's the browser. If you have specific questions e-mail me and I will be more then happy to help

• How can I stop Firefox from re-setting its internet connection configuration every time I re-open the browser? It should stay at "no proxy" but doesn't.

In the past couple of days, every time I close Firefox 8.0, it re-sets the internet configuration to "manual configuration" -- which generates a "proxy server refusing connections" error message. I have to re-set to "no proxy" every time I re-open the browser. This never happened before yesterday. What can I do to make the "no proxy" setting an automatic default on opening? ISP is Verizon high-speed.

Firefox auto-updated to 3.6.9 last night and now it crashes every time I open the browser, even in safe mode.

Hi there,
You could try performing a clean installation: [[Knowledge Base Article]] :
Some Firefox issues can be resolved by downloading a new Firefox installer from Mozilla.com, then closing Firefox, deleting the Firefox application folder (program files) and reinstalling Firefox. If this does not help, or if you would rather completely remove Firefox and start over instead of completing all the troubleshooting steps, follow these steps:
1. Download the latest official version of Firefox from Mozilla.com.
* You should avoid unofficial download sites that bundle Firefox with other software such as the Google Toolbar.
2. If you wish to retain your current profile, you should make a backup copy of it. See Backing up your information for instructions.
3. Uninstall Firefox and make sure you remove the Firefox application (program) folder and your Firefox personal data (user data and settings) - see Uninstalling Firefox for instructions.
4. Reinstall Firefox - see Installing Firefox for instructions.
5. When Firefox is started for the first time, the Import Wizard will appear and a new profile will be created.
6. Verify that the issue no longer appears.
7. If you made a backup of your old profile and wish to restore your old information, see Recovering important data from an old profile. For troubleshooting purposes, only copy the files corresponding to your bookmarks and saved passwords.
8. Reinstall your extensions and themes one by one to determine if any specific one is causing the issue.
