Firefox hangs when I close a PDF file that a website had opened at my request.

Windows 64 bit Vista OS. Everything works fine until I close a site opened PDF file. Then Firefox hangs and must be closed and Firefox processes must be ended with Windows Task Manager. Only then will Firefox reload.

In case you did not know, yours is not the current version. Try Firefox
in safe mode. Let us know how you do.
==================================
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

Hi Peter,
Please check the performance by disabling the 'Protected mode' in Reader.
Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) > Enable Protected Mode at startup
Uncheck this option. Click on Ok.

• Corrupted content error when trying to download .pdf file from one website.

Unable to download .pdf file from a website, but IE8 provided the download without hesitation.
Both v7 and v8 produced the same message:
"Corrupted content error"
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because an error in the data transmission was detected.
This may be a particular website problem, or it may be common to the particular industry segment and their protocols.
I have followed the help leads and examined the profile for Firefox as used in this instance. Nothing untoward seemed to pop out as a causal factor.

Reworked some of the javascript for our webserver and fixed the problem.

• Firefox hangs when trying to save a file, even after removing firefox and reinstalilng afresh

I recently experienced firefox hanging/freezing indefinitely when trying to save files, such as pdf files. The same pdf files open fine within the browser if I do not select "save link as...", but the problem occurs when I try to save such a file. The problem is similar regardless of the file type (e.g., .mp3, .txt). Not only did I go through the recommended solutions that mozilla suggests when file downloads hang, but I uninstalled firefox completely (removing all files with user settings), and then reinstalled firefox afresh without any plugins or add-ons, and I still have the same file save problem. It may also be worth mentioning that this problem does not occur in internet explorer or chrome. Maybe a system file that firefox uses got corrupted (?), but I don't know which one or how to repair it if that indeed is the problem.
My system is running XP, and I have McAfee AV installed (which has not been a problem in the past).

Early on I tried starting firefox in safe mode as one possible fix, and that didn't solve the problem. I just tried again right now with the fresh installation, and still no luck.
Any other ideas?

• Firefox Hangs when profile location is Offline Files

Hi all,
We are having some problems with custom profile locations on windows 7
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -Profile "U:\Firefox\Profile"
We use the above command to launch firefox. The u drive is a drive that is ALWAYS available for all users. This drive is redirected to the home folder of the user. To sync these folders we use Offline files.
During our testing fase we had no problems at all with this method. But in the last week we receive more and more people complaining that firefox hangs. (Read: no error specific error just stops responding and windows asks to close firefox)
In my troubleshooting quest i found that as long as i don't use internet ( so not using our proxy server squid) it all works. But from the moment i try using for example google, firefox stops responding.
The tricky part is that sometimes it happens after 5 minutes, couple of hours, few days.
Once it happened after 5 minutes, the only way to solve it is to delete the profile folder on the U Drive and start over.
So any help on identifying this problem is welcome. If more info is needed let me know what you need.

Acrobat X Pro v 10.1.10 (Mac OS 10.9.3) hangs when trying to save some PDF files, after opening or after commenting.  Applies for any of the Save options.  "Watch" then "spinning beach ball" appear and application is indicated as "not responding."  Mac OS Preview has no problem with the same files.  Files can be displayed with Acrobat, just not saved.  I would prefer to use Acrobat's commenting tools to mark up the document.

• When I download a .pdf file using mozilla, I cannot open that file despite having adobe reader on my desktop. I cannot save the file to open at a later time

I wished to view a .pdf file of a vehicle brochure. Mozilla found the brochure ok, but would not let me view it or save it. I ended up having to use IE to download and then view the file. • How do I stop Firefox 31.0 from closing down when I close the only tab that I have previously opened. This has not happened before and is infuriating.

As far as I am aware this problem started with the upgrade to Firefox 31.0. If I open Firefox and look at a website and then close that website, then Firefox closes down. The same thing also happens whenever I close the last of a number of websites that I have previously opened. Previously, I could close the last website looked at and the process did not close down Firefox, merely left me with my Homepage.

Hey! That's it. It worked!
Thanks a lot

• FF hangs when trying to save pdf files

Adobe pdf documents open fine but when I try to save a copy, FF hangs (hourglass, stops responding). Right-click and "Save link as" also hangs.
Under Tools->Options, if I select either "General" or "Applications", it hangs. All add-ons (there are only a few) are disabled, safe mode makes no difference.
Sometimes, I can right-click on FF on the taskbar and close it, but usually I have to use the task list to kill it.
IE (ugh) handles pdfs fine. I've changed the download directory, cleared the download history, cleared browsing history/private data, no change.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== Can't correlate to a particular update, since I don't always open pdfs

I tried uninstalling and re-installing FF 3.6.6 and then uninstalling and replacing it with 4.0beta. The program hangs under the following conditions (that I've found so far):
Load pdf (I can no longer even view them)
Click on "Tools>Options"
Import bookmarks from an HTML file
This happens with a clean install of FF, no changes whatsoever to the default configuration.
On my home computers, FF works great, it's just here on my work machine. No coworkers have reported similar troubles with the same software. Is there a way I can figure out if another program is causing weird things to happen? Some diagnostic I can run that will indicate where FF is having trouble? Any assistance would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

• Firefox hangs when opening any context menu - save as, download window, options window, etc

this is the third time i've had this problem with firefox...
firefox hangs when trying to download images, files, etc. the right click context menu opens (with bookmark, save page, save image, etc options) but after selecting an option, save image or whatever, the actual save as dialogue box doesn't open and firefox locks up.
many pages say to open the download pane and clear the history... i can't do that as trying to open the download pane locks it up, too. as does trying to open any other dialogues.
the first time this happened the only solution i could find was a total wipe and re-install (simple uninstall/re-install didn't work... it had to be weeded out of the registry manually).
the second time i just happened to be rebuilding my system, so i just did a fresh install on a fresh OS.
this time i can't seem to resolve the problem with uninstall and re-install...
help?

found out what was doing it!
after trying firefox safe mode and windows safe mode and any number of other things i'd kinda given up for a bit there, but i woke from a dream in the middle of the night thinking "based on the behaviour involved it *must* be something in the shell that's causing this." (sorry, i dream in geek.)
so i grabbed a shell viewer editor - ShelleExView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html) (had to use an icky, lesser browser to be able to download it) and gave it a run.
i listed all the extensions by the date they were added as a clsid and tried to think back to when the problem began... about a month or so after a fresh system reinstall. and through a little trial and error disabling i found the culprit.
it was an icon overlay handler put in by something called WagerLogic. after looking into the company name i'm going to have to assume this was related to one of the annoying "come lose real money at our virtual casino" pop-ups that infest the net nefariously panning for an easy mark like dickensian orphans.
i disabled it et voila! firefox is back to full function again.

• I downloaded a PDF file. How do I open my downloads?

Can you open a pdf file you stored on your SD card? ie not one you downloaded.

• When downloading a large PDF file, firefox stops after some of file and hangs up. Only way out is to close browser or power down. Internet explorer will complete download of same PDF file.

For example, go to irs.gov and try to download 1040 instructions as a PDF file. Firefox hangs up after part of the file is downloaded, but will not complete the download. The only way out is to close the browser (Firefox). Sometimes the only way out is to power down computer and reboot. I'm running Windows XP Professional. My computer has plenty of memory and disc space, so that is not the problem. When I use Internet Explorer (UGH!) it takes a while, but the very same pdf file will completely download.

• Where on Windows hard drive does Firefox temporarily store PDF files that I open from websites when I have Adobe Reader configured as the default PDF reader?

I have Windows 7 and Firefox 19.0.2. I see that every time I open a PDF file from a website, it prompts me to either save the file or open it with a program (defaults to Adobe Acrobat Reader). If it is the same file name that I keep opening up over and over, it appends an incremental number to the end of the file name. To me this implies that it is download the file to a temporary location and then opening it in Adobe Reader. Where is Firefox storing these files and how can I be sure that they are being deleted regularly? I don't want these files to be kept on my local hard drive after I close the file in Adobe Acrobat.

lowcountrybird wrote:

Files that you choose to open with an external program are saved in your temporary folder. To open it, click the Windows logo orb on the taskbar, type %TEMP% in the search box, then press Enter.<br>
You can clean out temporary files in Windows using the Disk Cleanup utility. The program can also be scheduled to perform cleaning tasks automatically without prompting.

That shouldn't be happening. If you try to download a file that's already in your temporary folder, it should simply open instead of being downloaded again.<br>
I don't know what could be causing it though. First, try upgrading to the latest version of Firefox. If nothing else, your system will no longer be vulnerable to the security holes in the version you're using.
