Firefox hangs when opening PDF links

I have tried the suggestions, but none of them worked.
If I click on a link to access a PDF file, Firefox hangs.
I seem to be able to download other files OK.

Had the same problem. I went into the Plugins and when I disabled the DocuCom PDF plus plugin the problem stopped. See if you have any plugins or extensions that deal with PDF files and try disabling them and see if the problem resolves.

  • Outlook Express or Firefox hangs when opening a link from OE

When opening a link in OE6 emails, Firefox 6 takes eons to finally come up if it does not hang OE in the end. It makes no difference if Firefox is already open or if it needs to launch. Any idea what is going on. This is a new problem in the last few weeks.

This sounds like the same problem we're discussing here.

  • Adobe Acrobat hangs when opening PDFs even after reinstall

    Hello,
I have 2 new Dell systems that are having issues with Adobe Acrobat.  When opening PDFs, either from an email attachement or file from our server, there is a brief hang that lasts 10-15 seconds, during which Acrobat is unresponsive however the workstation continues to respond.  I've since uninstalled/reinstalled, still no luck.  I've also run updates. Problem unresolved.
    Any ideas

One of our users is having a similar issue with Adobe Reader 9.2 hanging.  Adobe Reader will eventually open after about 5 seconds.  I've found a work around where if I leave a .pdf document open, any other .pdf I click will open up fine (but a .pdf needs to be left open in Adobe Reader).  This is happening only with one user.  Some of the things I've tried that have not worked: repairing, uninstalling/reinstalling, deleting temp files, opening the file with a different account/profile, downgrading to Adobe Reader 8.1.3.  Anyone have any ideas?  This is only happening to one user at my company.  I've searched the forums here and it looks like other people are having similar issues but there's really not a solution to this.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

  • Firefox hangs when opening any context menu - save as, download window, options window, etc

this is the third time i've had this problem with firefox...
firefox hangs when trying to download images, files, etc. the right click context menu opens (with bookmark, save page, save image, etc options) but after selecting an option, save image or whatever, the actual save as dialogue box doesn't open and firefox locks up.
many pages say to open the download pane and clear the history... i can't do that as trying to open the download pane locks it up, too. as does trying to open any other dialogues.
the first time this happened the only solution i could find was a total wipe and re-install (simple uninstall/re-install didn't work... it had to be weeded out of the registry manually).
the second time i just happened to be rebuilding my system, so i just did a fresh install on a fresh OS.
this time i can't seem to resolve the problem with uninstall and re-install...
    help?

found out what was doing it!
after trying firefox safe mode and windows safe mode and any number of other things i'd kinda given up for a bit there, but i woke from a dream in the middle of the night thinking "based on the behaviour involved it *must* be something in the shell that's causing this." (sorry, i dream in geek.)
so i grabbed a shell viewer editor - ShelleExView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html) (had to use an icky, lesser browser to be able to download it) and gave it a run.
i listed all the extensions by the date they were added as a clsid and tried to think back to when the problem began... about a month or so after a fresh system reinstall. and through a little trial and error disabling i found the culprit.
it was an icon overlay handler put in by something called WagerLogic. after looking into the company name i'm going to have to assume this was related to one of the annoying "come lose real money at our virtual casino" pop-ups that infest the net nefariously panning for an easy mark like dickensian orphans.
i disabled it et voila! firefox is back to full function again.

  • Project Professional 2010 and pwa hangs when opening a linked project from PWA on Project Server 2010

When I open a linked project in Project Professional 2010 from PWA, Project Professional 2010 hangs with the "Links Between Projects ..." dialog box open.  Unable to move or close the dialog box.  Unable to move or close Project Professional
2010.  The PWA tab on internet explorere is frozen and unable to access although other tabs in IE are accessible.  End up having to reboot to close down project or force the process to end.  I suspect a hidden dialog box is the culprit maybe
the scheduling conflict dialog box but am unable to access or switch and cannot confirm that there is another dialog box.
Has anybody else experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Julie

I have seen it hang when trying to open a project schedule even with no external links.
Project 2013 Pro, Link to schedule is on a PWA on a Project 2007 server.
If Project 2013 is open before clicking on the link, there is a long delay and the project schedule opens up in the web tab where the link was selected. If Project 2013 is not open, it just hangs and has to be shut down via the task manager.
No idea why. I can create a link to the shared volume and that works OK. But if I actually try to open MS Project by clicking on the link to a .mpp file it never opens in MS Project.

  • Firefox crashes when opening PDF, Word and other files

Recently, Firefox stopped being able to open PDF files within the Firefox program. It crashes whether one tries to have it open the file or just download it. The same occurs when trying to open a Word doc. It does this in safe mode too. Since I am studying for a college degree and use these features a lot, I've had to stop using Firefox. This is a problem, because my university uses Firefox for its classes and other programs aren't as compatible. I've tried EVERYTHING suggested on line, both in Firefox help pages and in user pages. Nothing works.

Fix the [http://browser.iyogi.com/firefox/firefox-not-opening-pdf.html '''PDF not opening in Mozilla Firefox'''] issue by reinstalling Adobe Reader. You need to uninstall Adobe Reader and re-install it to get the issue fixed. It is important to uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader that you may have in your system. Also, take care of installing the latest Adobe Reader for the browser.

  • Hang when opening PDF

I have a PDF authored in Pages and "printed" to disk that is file shared to my iPad2 via iTunes.
When I open it in iOS, Reader hangs: sometimes displaying a blank page, but other times it omits elements of the document, sometimes displaying a blank second page.
When this happens, tap to reveal the index does not function and closing/re-opening the Reader comes right back to the hang state.
After several minutes the PDF will finally display and the app resumes normal function.
I have resynced and renamed the PDF but have not figured out what is causing the hang on opening.
    Anyone recognize this bug?

Is it possible to share the file? This sort of issue is usually file specific and we can often fix the problem if we have the file.

  • Firefox hangs when opening Tools - Options, even in Safe Mode

I've just upgraded to Firefox 3.6.13. Prior to upgrading I removed all add ons. I went to Tools -> Options to check the settings and Firefox hung. I had to end it with Ctrl-Alt-Del. This happened several times. Then I started Firefox in Safe Mode and attempted to view Tools -> Options again. Firefox hung. It does not try to submit any crash reports (apart from the automatic Microsoft report that occurs when you end a program manually).
I can browse websites ok, open PDFs, view Flash, etc. I just can't view my options!

Thanks for the note about profile locations.
I deleted mimeType.rdf in my existing profile, still have the same issue - can't view Tools -> Options for the Applications tab, or download a file. Same goes for a new profile - the same issues arise.
Firefox never does crash, I can leave it in this hung state for hours (I left it in a 'not responding' state last night and it was still hung this morning).
I was going to add a screen shot to this post but Firefox hung when I clicked on the 'Browse' button. Perhaps this is an issue when FF tries to interact with my directory structure? Does that get us any leads on what's wrong?
FYI, I currently have my antivirus disabled & not running in the task bar just in case that was interfering somehow.

  • Firefox hangs when opening excel sheet in microsoft sharepoint

When opening a excel sheet in Microsoft sharepoint Firefox hangs / freezes. (not responding)
Only solution is to select end task in task manager.
This is with version 3.6.8 ( there is no problem with 3.6.4)

The problem here is, you have setted the content type as excel sheet and you are writing some String content into the output stream. when excel tries to read the String content it will surely throw some error. Lot of excel APIs are available in the market to generate excel sheets.
you can find one in the below URL.

hello wf1717, there has been a test build created with a speculative fix in it - would you be willing to help and test if the problem is gone with this build? (unfortunately developers are not able to reproduce the issue themselves, so we are dependent on feedback by affected users):
    # first as a precaution, please create a backup of your profile: [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
    # then download and install this try build of firefox: <s>http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/try-builds/[email protected]/try-win32/firefox-35.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe</s><br>'''updated link:'''ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2014-09-12-03-02-02-mozilla-central/firefox-35.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe

  • Firefox can't open PDF links that have been rewritten in .htcaccess

I have a Wordpress multi-site, and my problem is that Firefox can't open any of the PDFs that I have there. I get a dark-gray screen and it says "This PDF document might not be displayed correctly", but I am able to download it. In .htaccess I have this rewrite rule for files:
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$2 [L]
The thing is that if I write the actual path to the file it opens it in preview just fine. Also, Chrome and IE don't have this problem.

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Why does firefox hang when opening and takes several minutes to come up?

Why does Firefox hang for several minutes before coming up?

I am also having this problem. When trying to reboot, I get an endless cycle of the BIOS screen, then "MACHINE ERROR", then back. Running the same dmesg command as snoxu results in a similar error message. I am forced to shutdown by holding the power button. Upon rebooting, I get an error message that all extensions have been turned off (using Gnome Shell). Then I have to logout and login.
Shutting down and then restarting works fine.

  • Firefox hangs when opening in Vista but this is a new problem

I am running Firefox 3.6 and Vista. My laptop is 18 months old and I have been using Firefox since day one. In the past week, Firefox has started to hang on opening. I takes as long as a minute to clear, and I don't have this problem with IE8 or AOL. Any help would be appreciated.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Firefox hangings are usually caused by conflicting extensions or addons. Go to '''Tools--Addons--Extensions''' and disable them one by one to figure out which one is causing it.

  • CS6 PhotoShop hanging when opening PDFs - help?

    Hi all,
I'm IT support to a team of studio artists who are having some issues with our newly upgrade CS6 Premium suite (Mac OS 10.6 + Mac OS 10.8).
Situation: (Mac OS 10.6 problem) someone will be working on a 2GB network file, and tries to open a PDF to import elements into the current document. Machine has 12GB RAM (7 allocated to PS, 2 free, the rest used with OS/other apps).
After choosing the PDF file, the window will pop up and become 'stuck' in front of all other windows, all other programs. Activity Monitor describes PS as hung (red text) but Finder still recognises it as working (but will not show the program title in the menu bar). It is possible to CMD+TAB between programs, and the pallets recognise mouse-over actions but are unresponsive to click. Again, "Import" window is on top of all other windows, and can be moved but does not respond to mouse clicks.
Activity Monitor also shows intense disk activity (60-80MB/s) on local volumes. It appears not to be network activity though (while hanging, 50-150KB/s). RAM allocation doesn't change during this time.
If you can be patient enough, the system often recovers PS, but this can take a few minutes.
The extreme disk activity implies that PS is processing on the scratch disk, but what or why is it doing this, and is there any way to disable it. Would it have anything to do with Background Save or Autosave? Something to do with purging memory?
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James D.

Hey Chris or anyone else from Adobe - is there any chance we can get this looked at slightly more in-depth?
This issue is re-occurring across our four Mac Pro workstations of various ages and operating systems.
Why is Photoshop writing out the contents of the RAM when I open a pdf?
We're working with machines that have 8-16GB worth of RAM and having to write that out to the scratch disk every time you open a PDF is very unproductive use of our time.
It's nice and easy to blame everything else like fonts or drivers or operating system or graphics cards or RAM or Acts of God, but how about for a second we assume that Photoshop is the cause, look at how we'd test for it and ultimately get it resolved.
This is the sort of issue that the average consumer would probably just ignore or deal with, which could explain why you guys don't believe this to be a bug. Seems to be picking up a lot more attention on here.
    Thanks,
    James.
