Firefox has a "jerky" response to scroll wheel and keyboard input

Keyboard and mouse wheel response in Firefox is "jerky".
In the case of keyboard response, sometimes I can type steadily and see characters appear, while other times several seconds may go by before I see the letters I type (for example, in filling out this form it happened three times to this point).
The same is true of the scroll wheel on my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 mouse.
At first I thought it was system-wide as I spend most of my computer time on my work computer, but I recently realized it's really only Firefox.
I'd rather not do a total reset of Firefox if I can avoid it, as I still have a user chrome folder and a small handful of manually set about:config settings in addition to a few add-ons... unless I have certain knowledge that that will fix the issue(s).

Have you disabled hardware acceleration?
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

  • The menu bar goes transparent after 50-60 seconds and my mouse scroll wheel and keyboard wont work unless I click somewhere on the screen

I hope someone can help. I'm using Firefox 31.0.1
The menu bar at the top of the screen is a white transparent color and everything is working fine but after 50 or 60 seconds it changes to completely transparent, I can still read the words file, edit etc. This is where the scroll wheel on the mouse and anything I am typing stops working. Now all I have to do is click somewhere in the window and it works again but only for 50-60 seconds. I have had to click the screen twice since I started typing this because when I look at the screen, everything I have typed is not there because the menu bar went transparent again while I was typing. Its driving me nuts.
I don't remember this being a problem before today, if it was I would surely have noticed. Have I pressed something or clicked on something by accident??
I'm considering throwing the lot out the window, its really annoying, please help lads and ladies.

    Hello,
According to your user agent, you are on Firefox 32. If you planned to use Firefox 31 ESR, you can grab a copy here:
    * https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/
Out of curiosity, when it turns transparent, is there a "(Not Responding)" appended to the end of the window title? If you don't have the Window title being shown, it might show up if you have window titles shown on your taskbar, or in the task manager (right click on your taskbar and select "Start Task Manager"). If you do see a Not Responding, it could be a slow script on one of the pages you are viewing.
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

I have the latest driver for the touch-pad, from synaptics, for my toshiba laptop L505D-S5986. Operating system is Windows 7 (32-Bit). Have tried it on other browsers, and works as it should. The last add-on i installed for Firefox was "Fox Filter" so my kids couldn't accidentally stumble onto sites of immoral tastes. I can't see why that would have any effect, but it was the last update/add-on i installed to the browser, but even then,.......it was working fine for a week and a half afterwards until now. Please help.

    Hello Steve.
You may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
If you detect a faulty add-on, you should contact its author for support. You can also search for alternatives. Site filters are relatively common in the add-ons gallery: [http://addons.mozilla.org addons.mozilla.org].

Firefox has crashed numerous times on me tonight, and I keep getting an unresponsive script error (Script: chrome://devany/content/main.js:254) regardless of what website I'm on. NoScript will not block this script, and it's popping up with an increasing and alarming frequency. It's completely crippled my Firefox, and getting the a large enough window between unresponsive script warnings to get the Troubleshooting Information from Firefox took me a good 20 minutes. It's a very persistent script. I've already re-installed Firefox and restarted my computer, and scanned for viruses/malware. I'm on a Mac, if it makes a difference.

I was really getting worried that I'd done something to get malware installed on my 'puter. *Phew* !!
I'm going to disable DeviantAnywhere after I post this and hopefully this will be fixed for me too!
I actually hadn't kept my firefox up to date. but.. *shh...*

  • Firefox frequently loses almost all navigation (scroll wheel, page up/down) - must exit/restart to clear problem

This problem began sometime when I was using FF 3.6.x. I have since upgraded to 8.0.1, and the problem occurred more frequently than with 3.6.x. I finally decided to create a new profile, and I did not copy any files from the default profile. The problem persists. The problem has occurred regardless of whether I have one tab open or multiple tabs open. It occurs at seemingly random times.
Here's what happens: I will be merrily working along, and suddenly I will notice that my scroll wheel will no longer navigate the page I am on. Neither the page up/down keys work, and the up/down arrows no longer work either. However, I can still navigate by sliding the scroll bar up and down, and the Home and End keys work normally.
Additionally, I can not click on a tab to open it, but I can use CTRL-Tab to navigate from tab to tab.
A new artifact appeared after I upgraded to 8.0.1. Now, when I close a tab while this condition is in place, the tab actually closes and the appropriate page (next to the closed tab) will render, but the tab itself does not disappear from the tab bar. It's in effect a zombie tab.
Sometimes in this state I can click on links and the linked page will appear, and sometimes I get nothing. As a matter of fact, just after I loaded this very support page, the condition occurred. (Which is why I'll be copying this statement in case the Post Question link doesn't work :( )
I want to emphasize that I'm working with a completely new profile, so it's apparently not places.sqlite or any other file that's causing the problem. Please help if you can - I'm considering moving to Chrome if I can't figure this out. In recent days this problem has been occurring dozens of times a day.
    TIA.

Well, I was really excited there for a while. Last night I set up FF with the new profile, in safe mode, and then disabled all the plugins. (BTW, I was surprised to learn that safe mode didn't disable the plugins.) Exit/restart, visited some sites, no problems. Then I spent the rest of the night watching hockey (I have my priorities). I left FF up all night, and this morning it was not "locked up", which gave me a huge amount of hope - normally if I've left FF running overnight there's a near zero chance that it will respond. However, I went to Google News, and after I had opened about 7-8 tabs - no joy. Same symptoms. I guess I'll have to check out Chrome or Opera, because I tried using IE8 for a few hours yesterday and it was not a fun experience.
    Thanks anyway, cor-el.

  • When resuming from standby in OSX, firefox has no gesture support for scrolling, tapping to click or three finger flick back and forth in Snow Leopard

This occurs in 10.6.8 Snow Leopard when resuming usage after the computer was in standby (closing the lid).
I never experienced this with firefox 6. The problem arose with 7 and continues with 8.

I'd like to chime in and add that there is currently no acceptable Font Management solution for OSX.
    Sorry, but it's true.
Me, and every professional designer / ad agency / design firm I know struggles with this every day. In fact, most of them have resorted to the 'ol "temporarily drag said fonts into ~users/library/fonts, and then out again when you're done".
    That's no way to work.
I've tried them all. And I know people who've tried them all. Font Book, Suitcase2, Font Explorer X, FontAgentPro, etc, etc. And they ALL have major problems. Especially when you have more than a few hundred fonts. Which most designers easily do.
We need a robust, stable, AUTO-ACTIVATING solution ala ATM in os9... I'm not a programmer, but I gotta ask: why is this so hard?
I've used Font Dr to check and re-check ALL my fonts. Most of which are bought-and-paid-for professional versions. I keep a bare minimum of fonts activated at startup. I've read all the "How Fonts Work in OSX" articles, and I know what the heck I'm doing! But my font life on Panther, Tiger, Leopard and now Snow Leopard has been a living ****.
YES the Helvetica disaster is a huge problem. But I think the issue is much, much larger.
I spend literally HOURS of billable time each week dealing with this nightmare. When it comes time to design something, and find "the perfect font" for a headline, or a logo –which is something that used to fill me with glee– I'm consumed by dread. Having to yet again wade through this depressing morass of stupidity.
Sorry for the rant. But this issue is literally EVERYWHERE on forums and message boards, but NOWHERE in MacWorld, ArsTechnica, CNET, etc, etc. AKA the kinds of pubs that could actually hold Apple's and the other companies feet to the fire on this issue.
    Something MUST be done.
    Darnit!

  • Increments Of 100 With Grad Filter and Adj Brush Using Scroll Wheel and Arrows

For Vista 64 bit and Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT driver version 7.15.11.6960,
both the graduated filter and adjustment brush change at increments of 100 or 200 using the scroll wheel or arrows for everything except exposure. Brightness goes from -200 to 0 to 200 while the others go from -100 to 0 to 100.

Seen that as well. Keyboard focus has been an issue for me on Vista x64 OS for quite sometime.Sometimes the arrows don't move in even increments on all the sliders for various adjustments.
In this case the arrow keys move either side of 0 to the maximum exent of the range. In this case brightness has a range of + or - 200 while the other sliders move = or - 100

  • Firefox has been freezing constantly on my Mac, and I have to force quit the program every few minutes.

For the past week or so, Firefox has been freezing multiple times per day. Each time, I have to force quit the program. I tried resetting the plug-ins and add-ons and things, I uninstalled and re-installed Adobe Flash Player, and I uninstalled and re-installed Firefox itself--none of these things has worked. I really don't want to stop using Firefox, but it is currently unusable. Can someone help?

  • Over the last week my Firefox has been crashing whenever i close games and sometimes in the middle of them. What is going on??

I got a new rogers box and I had a Norton Security installed and since then the games like farmville and cityville have been crashing on a regular basis. I have called about the Norton 3 times, and i tried the Internet wireless and wired and nothing has changed so I don't know what else they can do. Is there something wrong with the flash player over the last week????

It seems to be a common complaint. Norton Security does not play nicely with Firefox (or IE).

To get the CD to eject, hold down the mouse, or if you use it, trackpad, button while you reboot ... keep holding the button down until it ejects. If that doesn't work, this Apple note has some other steps.
See this Apple note on steps to take to deal with the grey screen.
Your iMac needs to be mid-2007 or newer with 2GB minimum memory (4GB+ is recommended) and 8GB or more of available disk space. You also should be at OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to access the App store and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • Firefox has gone into safe mode. what happened and how do i fix it?

when i loaded firefox it went into safe mode and now firefox is useless

How do you know it is in Safe Mode?
Normally closing Firefox - Firefox button>Exit or File>Exit - and waiting a few seconds before re-opening should put you back into Normal Mode.
If not, check with Task Manager and close Firefox if it is still running.
Please sign in when you report back on progress. You may need to do some troubleshooting. Full system details would help.

  • Why isn't the scroll wheel working properly with Firefox 4?

I have a new Windows 7 PC at work with Firefox 4 on it. The scroll wheel on my mouse is not working right. It will work if I use Internet Explorer but I have trouble getting it to work with Firefox. Usually what I have to do is click the wheel to get that mode of scrolling where you move the mouse up and down to scroll the screen and that will work. And then when I click the wheel again to get out of that mode, my scroll wheel will work as expected. But I don't want to have to do that all the time. And sometimes that trick doesn't work. The scroll wheel is working fine with MS Excel and Lotus Notes and Internet Explorer, etc, so it seems to be something the new Firefox has an issue with.

I fixed my problem! I was messing around in msconfig to turn off Lync from my Startup list and noticed something called Mouse Suite 98 was in my Startup. I did a quick google check and learned I could remove it without doing any harm. And voila! My scrollwheel is working properly with Firefox, finally! Hope this helps someone out there.
