Firefox icon appears on mac desktop every time app starts

every time i use firefox on my mac, a firefox drive icon appears on the desktop. I have installed the program properly and a firefox icon is in the apps folder as well as in the dock. Yet, each time I am finished using it, I have to quit the program and then "eject" the icon from the desktop to get rid of it. How can I prevent this icon from appearing every time I open firefox? (I have tried uninstalling and re-installing to no avail)

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_3; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.22.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Safari/531.22.7

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the DMG file and drag to Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

  • MSN Entertainment - .mp4 icons appear on my desktop every time I am using Firefox to view some web pages.

I have been using Firefox for many years now. Firefox 19.0 on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 Lately when I open and view some web pages an Icon with 'MSN Entertainment -.mp4' appears. Some sessions leave as many as 15 to 20 of these Icons. I can not open them with any thing.
Did I do something wrong or what. I can't seem to find out the answer.
They do not appear when we use Safari

PS - SORRY --- I meant (in the title): "... using Firefox as my web browser."

  • How do I stop Firefox from checking add-on compatibilty every time I start the program?

In the past 2 days, every time I start Firefox, a "What's New" tab (checking for compatibility of add-ons?) pops up in addition to my homepage tab. How can I keep the "What's New" tab from coming up? It seems like this starting happening after I updated to Firefox 6.0.
    Running Windows Vista
    Firefox 6.0

Firefox 8 i am on and its doing the same, very annoying, ill be going back to previous version...
do you guys at Firefox ever check your update's on any of your own computers before you release them?
might be a good idea, its the same with kylo, updates come screw everything up when they were working fine...im am a house builder,if i built houses with this many errors i'd be bankrupt by now....

  • Firefox checking compatibility of add-ons every time it starts.

Every time I upgrade, Firefox begins checking compatibility of add-ons every time it starts. And it brings up the "Hooray! Your Firefox is up to date" page every time too. How to fix?

  • I have to install CC Desktop every time I start my Computer

Whenever I open an Adobe CC app on my laptop, Creative Cloud starts up and I see the icon on the top bar of my computer screen. Not so on my Desktop computer. It never starts up on it's own and if I have problems with apps (which seems to happen often), I first look to see if there is an update. However, if I have turned off my computer since the last time I used CC Desktop, it won't start. If I try to start it from the Applications folder by double clicking the alias it does nothing. If I try to start it by double clicking the actual app icon in the Utilities folder, it does nothing. If I download the CC Desktop installer and start it up, it stalls during Initialization, the color wheel spins, and I have to restart the computer to quit out of the installer.
The only thing that works is for me to start up the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and "clean" the Creative Cloud Desktop app, which essentially makes it dissapear from my applications folder. I don't know what happens to it, and it is not in the trash, I just know it is gone and only then will the new app install properly, and it starts up.
And this happens every single time. So instead of simply starting photoshop and going to work, I have to screw around with restarting and cleaning and downloading and installing for 25 minutes first.
Anyone experiencing similar issues? Or have a solution?

No solution I am afraid apart from what you have found. I occasionally have to completely re-install all of the apps as well. Same here, it happens after I reboot the system, if I keep it running then I am good.

It is beginning to drive me mad.

  • How can you stabilize the text in firefox to keep it from defaulting every time you start firefox?

  • Newly installed firefox has left an blue "drive" icon on my (Mac) desktop that I cannot erase. When I click on firefox in applications, it always brings this up and won't start firefox directly. I cannot erase this "firefox" drive icon, it won't let me. E

The icon is blue with a white firefox logo on it. My only options are to "Burn 'Firefox'" or "Eject 'Firefox'" when I click on it to edit it, but I cannot cut, paste, or move to trash. It won't let me. When I click on "Eject 'firefox'" it says "The disc firefox is in use and could not be ejected". Even when I am running no applications whatsoever.
When I click on this icon, a small window appears with two icons in it: one the firefox browser icon, and the other the applications folder icon with an arrow inbetween the two. When I drag the icon into the application folder it tells me:
"An item named 'firefox' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you're moving?"
And no matter how many times I "replace it" the icon never goes away.
And no matter how many times I replace it, whenever I click on the firefox icon in applications, it brings up this tiny window on my desktop before it will actually start running the firefox web-browser. And it will never reload my previously saved tabs is also my main concern.

Maybe you copied the icon show in the window to your application and into your dock directly. Try closing your Firefox again. Eject the disc again. Then go to your application folder. You should see Firefox with a circle and cross through it. Open it. It should open without the blue icon appearing on your desktop again.

    Best regards, John.

because there is absolutely no mention in my System Preferences of either Users & Groups nor Start Up Items.
    John,
William's solution was much easier - just for completeness sake: The preferences panes to edit your startup items moved between the Mac OS X updates: I forgot that the "Users&Groups" preference pane used to be called "Users" in Mac OS X 10.6; it is the panel that you use to create new User accounts; and earlier systems had a separate preferences panel "Login" to enable and to disable the applications that are launched at login. Both are now combined in "Users&Groups". Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase with the wrong Preferences panel.
    Regards

  • I download the new version. No Firefox icon appears to be dragged into the Applications folder. I am on a new Mac with the latest software.

I downloaded the most recent version of Firefox as requested. No Firefox icon appears
to drag into the Applications folder. I tried twice with no luck. The old version remains.
I am on a new Mac. I will, when this works, be updating my older Mac as well.

The thing in your download folder is a "disk image." You have to double-click it and it will place a white "disk" on your desktop. It should also open a window with a Firefox icon and your applications folder. Then you can drag it to the applications folder. When you are done drag that disk to the trash. Kernel panics are usually hardware.
Hold down 'd' key and it should boot into Apple Hardware Test, or insert your OEM install DVD to do so.
No, we are mere users and mortals and usually you need to do some troubleshooting by trial and error and testing. Schedule an appointment.

Consider using a separate password protected Operating System account, if possible, that may help.

  • Every time I start Firefox, the Sync preferences say I have to set it up on my desktop and my Macbook.

I have set up Sync at least five times on my two devices (iMac and Macbook Air). Each time I launch Firefox, I'm prompted (in Preferences) to set up Sync again, which I do using the same Sync Key, username or password.
