Firefox incorrectly identifies .xlsx attachments as Firefox HTML documents

When I try to open attachments with .xlsx file extensions, Firefox identifies as a Firefox HTML document and the "open file" window does not show Excel as an option - when I try to Browse to Excel the window does not open to "my programs" where I might be able be able to designate the correct association. (it shows "Program Data" and "Program files" but these don't work to make the association. The file will save ok but, I want to be able to open them as I can easily do in IE. Is the only solution to give up on Firefox and go back to IE?

When I get to the content type window, there is no reference to Excel or .xlsx or anything similar, so I cannot change anything in the Action choice..

• After last update, many of my attachments have changed to "Firefox" HTML Document

I Keep a "master file" on the desktop of genealogy data, and numerous graphics used in e-mails. It appears that about the
time of the last update to Firefox, many of my graphics, and other information have changed from their original designations (e.g. jpeg,, etc.) to FIREFOX. I can open the files by changing to "open with windows viewer", however if I copy it, after opening, it will not paste into my e-mails. They will not even paste into Paint. What in the world could have occurred?? If it is opened without changing it from Firefox, it only shows gibberish. I attempted to add an image, however even when it has been copied to the desktop it will not show up so I can add it to this message. These items in the file show up as Firefox HTML Document.
HAVE NEVER HAD AN EXPERIENCE SUCH AS THIS PREVIOUSLY IN THE MANY, MANY YEARS I'VE USED FIREFOX. The icon showing
up is the FF icon on all of these, and not what was there originally. I have been struggling for quite some time attempting to determine what the problem is.
ANY AND ALL RECOMMENDATIONS WILL BE MOST APPRECIATED.

cor-el: The extensions were originally jpg, gif, etc.
I have been having problems with KEEPING Firefox as my default
browser, and this is because I noted that it had changed and was
suddenly NOT my default browser. This has been occurring on a continuous basis after one of the last FF updates. Just long enough, apparently to mess up my graphics, and other information which I have
kept in my Master Folder. Very disheartening. This occurred every few days, so I continued to keep checking it each time I opened FF, changing it
back to my default browser.
Therefore I changed nothing, only noted that many times FF was showing as "not being my default" browser, although it appeared that was, and I do not use the IE although I do have it (for emergencies).
This, apparently is an insurmountable problem, not of my making, and I do not know how to solve it. I will attempt to go to the link you have provided however I may not have time today.
Thank you so very, very much for your recommendation, I will see what I can do.

• Firefox (15) inserts a "Firefox HTML document" in Windows Explorer File New menu. It breaks my works patterns (Alt FWF stops working). Need to disable.

I often use the shortcut Alt FWF to create new directories on Windows.
When FF 15 is set as default it alters the File New menu from Windows Explorer.
It inserts a "Firefox HTML document" item.
This item seems to sabotage the above key combination. It intercepts the last F.
In addition I object to the naming which is plain wrong, for me.
I have deleted the registry key that inserts this thing. Unfortunately it re-appears.
I want to stop this behaviour.
How do I kill this. (Other than by making another browser the default.)

I'm not seeing that on Windows 7 (which I'm sure is no consolation to you).
Since Folder usually is the top item on the new items menu, can you use
<br>Alt+f w Enter
until someone comes up with <s>a better workaround</s> an actual solution?

• Firefox has changed all my Adobe PDFs to Firefox HTML Documents!

I was having trouble opening up new pdfs -- Firefox would start opening up multiple tabs until I closed firefox -- and then I realized that (a) it did the same for opening existing pdfs, and (b) it had changed the file type on all my existing pdfs to Firefox HTML documents. Quite disturbing. Adobe Acrobat and Firefox are both up-to-date...what can I do to restore proper settings?

cor-el,
Your suggestions didn't work. But the solution to this problem is found -
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1012877?esab=a&s=pdfs+become+firefox+html&r=11&as=s
The chosen solution works. All you need to do is apply (in my case in windows explorer on an acient XP machine) it to one pdf file that has been changed to a firefox html file, and it will change ALL the corrupted PDF files back to PDFs. It will leave those files that actually are HTML files alone. FWIW

• Why is dreamweaver cs6 saving my files as a firefox html document?

Hi, I am using dreamweaver cs6 on win xp sp 3 and it keeps saving my files as a firefox html document and connot figure out how to stop this as i need to get on to my ftp to upload files. It also loaded my site files from dreamweaver cs 5 as a firefox html document. I am running firefox ver 13.0.1. Any Help would be usefeful. I tried google searching and found nothing. And the adobe general help didn't wok either.

Firefox is probably your default web browser which launches anytime you click on an .htm or .html file.
If you want HTML files to launch inside Dreamweaver instead of Firefox, open your file manager (Windows Explorer), and change file associations for .html & .htm files.  When you do this, the icon next to those files will change from FF to DW.

• My PDF files are now identified as Firefox HTML documents, how to fix it?(only icons changed, extension is still .pdf)

After I uninstalled Firefox, all icons returned to usual PDF icons and files were identified as "PDF" files,
but when I installed Firefox (31.0) again, all PDF files again are identified as "Firefox HTML document".
Extensions do not change, they are always .pdf, and files automatically open in Adobe Acrobat,
but icons became "firefox HTML documents" icons and it is very confusing.

Thanks Robinson3 !
The most economical solution.
Not only worked for PDF files but also for other similar problem.
Of all offered solutions this looks the most bang on.
Hope, the problem will not return (but even if it returns the solution
is so fast and simple).
I did exactly the following (all steps included) :
Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types > New > PDF>Advanced>
>Associated File Type, and choose "Adobe PDF reader"

Hi NACCACHE, when you make Firefox your default browser, Windows will display the document type for certain files (especially .html files) as "Firefox HTML Document". If you switch your default browser to a different browser, such as Internet Explorer, the description will change.
Are you having a problem with the description appearing with documents that are not normally of the type that display in a web browser?

• When I convert a word document to a pdf, it shows up as a firefox html document

Recently I reloaded my acrobat pro and ever since when I convert a word file to a pdf, it shows as a firefox html file.  Why?

Hi chief grunt,
It seems that the pdf ownership is taken over by Firefox.
Right click on the generated file and select 'Open with' > Choose Default program.
In the list of Programs that appear select Adobe Acrobat and click on 'Apply> Ok'
You can also check the setting in Acrobat > Edit> Preferences> General> Defalult pdf handler

• All my pdf documents have turned into firefox html documents and will not open correctly

All my pdf documents have suddenly become firefox html docs & will not open unless I go into the folder, right click, 'open with', etc. I haven't changed any of my settings. I think firefox did an update yesterday, however, so I'm connecting it with that, possibly...

Try this:
# Right click your PDFs, click Properties
# Go to the General tab
# In the Opens with section, click the Change button
# Select Adobe Reader (or Foxit Reader/Whatever PDF viewer you use)
# Click Apply then OK.
Does it work then?

• Whenever I open Reddit, I get the pop up, "Firefox HTML Document (0 bytes)" which asks for my permission to be downloaded. On Cricinfo, I get a similar pop up.

On Reddit, whenever I open any page, I get this popup:

On Cricinfo, I get a similar popup:
http://i.imgur.com/im3tpqN.png
This would also occur on other websites, but these are the two of the websites that I frequent a lot more. The problem is, even if I click on "Do this automatically..." button, all what it eventually does is that all such files gets saved in the default "download" folder which slows my system down. Help?

Hello,
This behavior is not the right behavior - neither of these sites would prompt you to download any files when you visit them. Can you please check if this happens when you open Firefox in safe mode too. Instructions for running Firefox in safe mode are below
Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• How can I get my PDFs to show up as anything but the Firefox html icon?

I need the old format where the contents of the first page of the PDF showed up as its icon instead of the Firefox icon. Now they all look alike, which really slows down my work production! I now have to read every title to find the PDF I want! Also, the option of being able to pick a picture from inside the PDF as the cover would be even better! This would expedite work tremendously when retrieving PDFs. Is there an add-on or a program I can download that will give me this option? Either way, please help me clear away the little blue and orange foxes all over my folders which really slow me down, besides defeating the entire purpose by accidentally dumping them into the trash! I really prefer Firefox as a browser and do not want to be forced to make a change in order to remedy the issue. I have downloaded at least 6 PDF add-ons and they all create PDFs in Firefox HTML. I have also made changes in Options-Applications which did not remedy the problem either. Thank you for your help!

hello, does it work when you go into the acrobat reader > edit > preferences > general & click on the default application option at the bottom? in there reselect adobe's application and confirm this selection...

• Firefox 31 changes all PDF icons to Firefox HTML icons that I can not seem to change back, can this be rectified? Using Windows XP.....

Once Firefox 31 is installed it sees all PDF files as Firefox HTML files and changes all of the PDF icons to Firefox HTML icons. This change can not seem to be reversed without uninstalling Firefox.
Only the icon is changed, not the .PDF extension.

Thank you for your reply but it's not that simple:
Windows now thinks that the default file type for .pdf is Firfox HTML Document.
I can change which program opens .pdf files but I can't change the icon.
Not a Firefox problem? Really?
EDIT:
Let me explain further so that you can understand. In folder options / file types I can scroll thru and choose any file type / advanced and change the icon...every one of them except (now) .pdf. There is no advanced tab. Only the message about "restore" I mentioned before.
Firefox changed the file association for .pdf files and now I can't fix it.
And from another thread:
"Firefox 31 is not converting or renaming your files. All it is doing is registering with the Windows OS as an application that is able to open the files and Windows then changes the file's icons accordingly.
This should only occur if no other application has already registered your .pdf files."
Well I guess that's not true is it?
