Firefox initially opens new tabs as tabs, then switches to new windows

I am running FF 14.0.1 and the following problem has persisted through a number of versions.
Initially FF will open new tabs...Ctrl+t works, right-click open in new tab etc. all work fine. Sometimes tabs are now issue and I can have maybe 20 or more tabs open. Then other times we seem to get to some arbitrary limit, say 5 tabs, and from then on every new tab opens a new window. Any external link opens in a new window, a Ctrl+t opens as a new window, all new windows are single frame, e.g. you can't have a number of windows each of say 5 tabs, just the original window with (say) 5 and then a series of windows with only single pages in each and from which Ctrl+t only opens a new window.
A complete restart does sometimes cure things and I can go back to having different pages in different tabs, and then something...no obvious pattern...kick us into 'new window only' mode after which even if I reduce the number of tabs in the original multi-tabbed window, Ctrl+t only opens new windows.
It's really starting to get to me... I've trawled the support info and am wondering about a complete reset or even uninstall and re-install. places.sqlite is checked as being valid and I've reindexed it too, all to no effect.

Well I think the following shows the odd state FF has got itself into. So I...
# Located the profile folder
# Closed FF (14.0.1)
# Renamed (rather than deleted) the localstore.rdf file
# Restarted FF in safe mode
The main point then was that excepting the change in layout, that tabs didn't work at all; the option was greyed-out, the + tab did nothing and Ctrl+t did nothing.
The then stopped, deleted the new localstore.rdf and restored the old/orginal one and restarted. This restored my layout by still new tab is entirely gone...the option is greyed-out in the menus, the + tab dodn't work and Ctrl+t does nothing. Ctrl+n does give a new window. In addition:
# The forward and back buttons have disappeared
# The toolbars have disappeared despite showing as enabled in the View:Toolbars menu
Opening a new windows however give a correct layout, e.g. back and forward and toolbars appear and New tab is enabled, however, it either via menu of via Ctrl+t only opens new windows.
The start in Safe mode sadly didn't seem to help, but I will experiment further...
Images:
# Note the loss of back and forward buttons and no toolbar
# This is simply a Ctrl+n new window...back and forward arrows and toolbars restored
# This is in the 'parent' multi-tabbed window (with no back/forward etc.). Note how New tab is greyed out explaining why + tab and Ctrl+t simply doesn't work...doesn't open new window, simply does nothing at all

How do I set Firefox to open new windows in a separate window (not in tabs)?

Click the orange Firefox button, and click "Options". This will bring up a new window with a "Tabs" tab at the top. Click that. There will be several checked boxes, including one called "Open new windows in a new tab instead" up at the top of the list. Uncheck that box and you should be good to go.
ETA: This should also work if you click "Tools" and "Options" within your version.

  • Why does Firefox keep opening new Windows rather than a new Tab in the current window?

I have " Open a new Tab in the current Window" select in Preferences.
Why then does this version (Version 4) keep opening new Windows, rather than new Tabs in the current Window.
This feature worked fine in 3.6.1.3, but in Version 4, it is a frigging pain in the rigging!
C'mon, Mozilla - time for an URGENT update ...

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.

  • Firefox is opening new windows automaticly most often when I move the curser

Firefox has started opening new windows that show redirect. This happens most often when I move the curser. The problem is intermittent as it seems to stop when you close all the windows at times. Then when you go to a new page it starts opening new windows again.

If this affects a lot of sites randomly, there's a good chance it is caused by an add-on. Try this:
Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or if obviously bad, remove).
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that shut down the extra windows?
    Also recommended:
    (1) Visit the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to group by date. Then look for any recent unrecognized programs that may have snuck in as part of a bundle. Remove everything you do not know to be useful and trustworthy.

  • When I want to mail a web-page or link firefox keeps opening new windows and cannot be stopped.

My laptop is a Samsung R730 (quite happy with it). I use Eudora for e-mailing. If I want to mail a web-page or link and click under 'file'to send it, Firefox starts opening new tabs without stopping up to over a hundred. I have to brutally switch off my lap-top, start agaiu. Restart Firefox which wants to open all the old tabs, click it off quickly. After that I can reopen to normal.

You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file if you get an "open with" dialog.

  • How do I set Firefox to open new windows in my second monitor?

When opening a new window (by right clicking a link and selecting Open in New Window), I would like the window to be opened in my second monitor. Firefox used to do this, but randomly stopped. Now when I open a new window it is opened in my primary monitor. It does not open maximized (just short of being completely maximized). I have tried the fix I used before- moving the un-maximized browser to the second window, closing and re-opening the window. I have also tried moving the un-maximized browser, maximizing, closing and re-opening. Does anyone know how I can restore Firefox to open my new window in the second monitor?

  • I used to work on few open windows with a number of open tags, for some reason firefox stopped opening new window, any reason why?

I have been using firefox for a while. I usually work on a number of windows (sometimes up to 8) with 8 - 10 tags in each. I was using a trial version of Nero and was triggered for an upgrade which i stopped half way through. I dont know if this has caused this problem. Now I cannot open any link in a new window. It will only open in a new tag of the same window.

-> IF you use Privacy Cleanup softwares like CCleaner, DON'T SELECT FIREFOX IN ITS SETTINGS. These softwares can be responsible for Deleting your Firefox Settings.
Perform the suggestions mentioned in the following articles:

  • Firefox cannot open new windows

I have done everything possible to fix this issue. When I install firefox, there is no issue with opening extra windows (not tabs). However once the computer is restarted, and firefox brought up, it will not open links in new windows but will open it in tabs.

You can check some prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page to be sure that these are correct.

  • Firefox 9 opens new window when opening new tab on Windows 7

When I load FF 9, then click on the + to open a new tab, it does so, but in the quickstart bar in Windows 7, it shows as another window of FF, although the new tab "seems" to be in the original instance of FF. Effectively, what I mean is, if I have 4 tabs open, it shows 4 Firefox windows in the taskbar.
Is there a fix for this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Clive

I'm assuming you are referring to Tab Previews in the Win7 Taskbar.
This can be turned of rather easily.
    *Open a New Tab
**Type about:config in the address bar
When the page loads click "I'll be careful, I Promise"
In the "Filter" bar at the top of the page type
    *browser.taskbar.previews.enable
**Double click it to set the Value to FALSE
If you simply type "Taskbar" in the filter, this will give you ever option that pertains to the windows 7 taskbar.

  • I use tabbed browsing. Firefox randomly opens new windows with advertising. Pop-ups are disabled. How to fix?

I use Firefox with Windows 7. I use tabbed browsing, and the tabs show at the top of the page. At the bottom of the page, where the Firefox logo is displayed, Firefox will randomly open a second window with advertising. This is a Firefox issue because it says Firefox at the top of the new page. Pop-ups are disabled via Tools>Options>Content. Pop-ups also are disabled on the Verizon Security Suite.

    Hello,
    ''jstavene wrote:''
can find nothing under the tools menu for private browsing?
Then it's not the same issue.
If Firefox is set to '''Never remember history''', then you're in “permanent private browsing” mode, in which case the menu item ''Stop Private Browsing'' will be grayed out. Perhaps that's the case, and you don't find the menu item easy to see?
    * [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
If that's not the case, then menu items can be hidden using the userChrome.css file. Check if it exists, and if it's there, rename it, then restart Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
In Firefox Nightly (what will become Firefox 20), per-window private browsing has been added, so the menu item under the Tools menu is gone. It's been replaced by New Private Window under the File menu. I don't suppose it's very likely that you're using such a cutting-edge test version of Firefox though.
If that doesn't solve the problem, since it's a different issue, it would be best if you would ask a new question.

  • Firefox now opens new tabs in new Firefox sessions. This is new behaviour and is a nuisance. How do I stop it?

This may be a Windows problem or it may be a Firefox issue.
I think it started when I installed updated Firefox to version 35.
Firefox 35 is running in Windows 8.1 on a desktop.
When I click a link in my Firefox browser, I've set FF to open new windows in a new tab instead.
    It doesn't.
It opens a new window altogether that sits at the far end of my Windows task bar. If I have several tabs running, the taskbar displays the main program icon, which is pinned to the taskbar, and way over to the right it displays an icon that shows another session of Firefox. If there are three new sessions running, that icon on the right shows layers.
To close Firefox, I have to select each session and close it individually.
In the past, the Windows taskbar icon showed just one Firefox icon, although it would show layers if there was more than one tab open. Now it's showing the two as described above.
This is a nuisance. Is it caused by Firefox 35, and if so, how do I stop it?

Thanks, Fred. The settings checked under "Tabs" are Open new windows in a new tab instead, and When I open...switch to it immediately.
Maybe I'm describing the problem incorrectly. Firefox is 'pinned' to my taskbar. When clicked, a second FF icon appears to the right and it is not pinned. It appears to be an entirely new session. New tabs open in it.
My home page is a web page with links with the target=_blank attribute. When I click one a new session starts with two tabs in it, my home page and the page for the url I linked to. The attached image shows four FF sessions running, three of them with two tabs, resulting from clicking 3 links on my home page. Instead of one "unlit" icon and one "lit" icon with seven tabs shared between four sessions, there should be one icon, lit, with one session with four tabs.
I think this started happening when FF upgraded to version 35, but it may have been when Windows 8.1 upgraded itself, if that happened recently. I've only noticed this behaviour for a few days; until then FF stayed in one session with multiple tabs, and only the pinned program icon showing in the task bar.
This ONLY occurs with Firefox. My other browsers, IE 11, Opera 26 and Safari, just use the one pinned icon.

It's strange. The problem apparently resolved itself after I ran TechTool on it. When I clicked on Firefox last night, I had no problem opening a window. Thanks for your help. • Want Firefox to open new links in current tab, not to open in new tab.

With one of the new updates, Firefox opens a new tab when going to a new link, rather than opening link in the current tab, the way it did in earlier versions. I know I can choose open new tab or open new window in Preferences, but I want to just open the linnk in the current tab. Now, in a very short amount of time, my tab bar is filled with a glut of tabs. I prefer to use back page or forward page to retrace my steps, and to open up a new tab just when I want to open a new tab. This new default for tabbing contradicts the concept of making tabbing for your own organizational behavior.

Click the orange Firefox button, and click "Options". This will bring up a new window with a "Tabs" tab at the top. Click that. There will be several checked boxes, including one called "Open new windows in a new tab instead" up at the top of the list. Uncheck that box and you should be good to go.
