Firefox is already running. "Check access rights" - Read Only, revert back and selected automatically!

I Have follow the steps releated issue "Firefox is already running, but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system".
However, issue is solved for sometimes by following steps (1 & 2) but the issue created again. Regarding step 5, I cannot applied it, because when I uncheck "Read Only" it revert back again!!
Please advise.
Note:
We are running the Firefox through Citrix XenApp Presentation 4.5.
Thank you

Do you get that all the time or only if you close Firefox and want to restart Firefox?

  • Firefox 29.0.1 on Windows 7 (64-bit): ALWAYS get "Firefox is already running but not responding..." error and need Task Manager to close/restart Firefox.

I run Firefox 29.0.1 on Windows 7 (64 bit) and I get the "Firefox is already running but not responding. In order to open the program you must close the existing window." error. EVERY TIME I try to start Firefox. The posted solution works to start the program, but it is not a permanent solution. I go through the Task Manager and end the old Firefox process, then I can open a new window. While working, I can open multiple tabs and multiple windows, everything seems to (usually) work the way it should. Then after I completely exit Firefox, in order to open the program again I need to fix the SAME error again. Every time. It doesn't seem to hurt anything really, but it is quite annoying.
I used to get this same error on some of the older Firefox versions but it was only once in a while. With the new 29.0.1 it is literally EVERY TIME I TRY TO RUN FIREFOX!!!!
So, down to the big question: is there a permanent fix for this yet? Or will there be one included in the next version update? Or am I going to have to go back to Internet Explorer? I know I am not alone in this experience; i've seen several other users posting similar questions but none of them received satisfactory answers. So what's the story here, team Firefox?

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

  • How can I stop from getting the "Firefox is already running" error message when trying to open links and FF has already been opened through a symbolic link?

I use symbolic links and program shortcuts as a way to easily open different Firefox profiles ie. one for casual/personal use and another for work. This works well, but I get the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error message if I try to open external links with FF as my default browser. FF is actually open and running fine, but I guess it doesn't acknowledge this fact because of how I'm originally starting the process.
I wasn't able to add the symbolically linked executables to the default program pane. Is there a way to bypass this error or other way to fix this?
The solution to the question linked below is what I'm using to open the different FF profiles.

  • Change public share access to read only for public and full access to selected users

Hi, new to the community just purchased a recertified WDMyCloud 2TB after my 2 years old MyBookLive 2TB HD died due to accidental power cable unplugging. I've got everything setup including MiniDLNA by following instructions on this forum and everything is working  exactly as I want it to except public share. I want public share to be set to read only access for public and full access to certain users (just myself at the moment) and having a "upload" folder within this share with full public access to everything in this folder would be a bonus. I tried login in to ftp with root user and removing write permission for public but that blocks me out as well. I'm sure it's possible by doing some majic on SSH but I wouldn't have a clue so hoping someone here would be able to help me out.

    Mr_Khan wrote:
What i want is public to have read only access to file server. Public as in users who do not have a user account on mycloud. E.g someone who connects to to my home network for the first time and is able to browse and download content from public share. I'm aware of being able to set indivual access to shares for users like full access, read only and no access but public users won't have a user account.Through the My Cloud UI interface what you seek to do is not possible. The public share like all other share folders are an all or nothing affair when using the adminstration UI. When using the administration UI you do not have granular control on shared folders to limit non users to read only access or set permission levels for subfolders. The workaround to do what you seek and have the public folder set for read only is to change the folder settings via SSH. It may take some work to set the folder security so that users can read/write to the public folder while the guests only have read access. However, if you reboot the WD My Cloud or update the WD My Cloud firmware those settings may be reset back to the default settings where the entire public folder is read/write for all. There are way to prevent this but again it will take a bit of coding to do so via SSH. See this link (even though its for the WD My Book Live) for a starting point on how to use SSH to change the permission levels on the public folder. Another option if one doesn't go the SSH route is to turn off public sharing for the public folder then create a "guest" user account and give that "guest" account read only access to the public folder while all other user accounts have full read/write access.

  • Error message "Firefox is already running but is not responding" - I have read and action the KB - no fix

So before we start - I have read the KB (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-already-running-not-responding) and actioned the advice on how end the processes, delete the parental lock, etc. This gives a temporary but one time only fix and does not resolve the overall issue.
I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the application.
So why do I get the Error message "Firefox is already running but is not responding"?

Note that in Firefox 13+ (expected to be released June 5) the parent.lock file is no longer deleted after closing Firefox to make it possible to check for startup crashes, so the presence of that file will in the future no longer indicate a problem.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Whenever I try to open it, I get something like "Firefox is already running". HOWEVER, when I check my profiles folder... it is empty!

Exact message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system
This happened when I first booted up the computer (so I hadn't been running Firefox anyway).
    I already tried:
-restarting and shutting off. This does not help. However, the system felt the need to run an error check on one of the restarts, which turned up nothing. This might indicate something.
-Opening task manager. firefox.exe does not appear in the processes list.
-Using the help file. None of it seems to help since the profiles folder is empty. I can't run profile manager either.
-uninstalling and reinstalling. I STILL GET THE SAME ERROR. Furthermore, the profiles folder is still empty!
I am currently running a virus scan, so far nothing. IE seems to be unaffected.
EDIT: Latest version of Malwarebytes has turned up no threats.

Well, if the profile folder is empty, either its contents are somewhere else and hopefully you can put them back where they belong, or you lost your profile info. I don't know how could happen, though...
In any case, see this support article to know about managing profiles:

  • Firefox is already running but not responding/random page-load stalls.

Lately when I use Firefox, everything works initially when I first open a browser and start my browsing session, however, when I come back to my already opened browser from my desktop either being asleep or in screensaver mode, the browser will often no longer load webpages. I then go to close the browser to reopen it, I receive the error message:
"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
I've researched this error, and some discussions mention it deals with the default profile for the browser. I deleted the default profile, and created a new profile, and still receive the same issue. Also I have downloaded, uninstalled, and have done a clean reinstall of Firefox 4.01 and still receive the issue.
Do you know what could be the problem? Thanks for your help.

    Access Rights
It would be better if someone with Vista knowledge answered you.
I use XP pro & XP home edition so do not know answers for Vista. XP pro gives detailed security info and settings, XP HE it is a lot move difficult to figure out, and displays a greyed out tick/check-mark as the folders ''Read Only'' attribute. If you look within the folder you will see files such as ''places.sqlite'' as long as such files have very recent dates/times you can assume firefox does have write permissions on the files.
As a test I suppose you could create a new profile and using profile manager create the profile folder on the Windows desktop, where you can be sure you will have access rights to it.
I suggested changing the sleep settings etc, because if you suspect it is the sleep etc function causing the problem that may show up quickly if you change the OS settings to a short delay before it sleeps.
Presumably when you see the error messages you are seeing the firefox.exe process is still running when you look in Task Manger. Try deliberately bookmarking open tabs to a folder and closing all but a blank page tab before closing down firefox that may help remedy the problem.
You could also check to see if you have multiple copies of sessionstore.js (you will loose session restore info if you delete them, but at least move them out of the profile, they could be a cause of the problem) see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Multiple_sessionstore.js_files

  • When I attempt to open firefox an error message appears telling me that firefox is already running, but I can't find it running. How do I do so or in any case close the already running Firefox process?

When I attempt to open Firefox instead of Firefox opening, an error message appears saying "Firefox is already running but isn't responding. To open another window please close the existing Firefox process or restart the system.", but I can't find that process of Firefox in order to kill it, and after restarting the system there is still the problem. I have found an emergency fix to at least get online, and that is to use"Firefox_Profile_Manager" in the start menu's "run" start menu, but the
Firefox that then opens is that one doesn't carry over what I had in my bookmarks but starts bookmarks anew.

Sounds like it is hanging when you exit and later try to restart Firefox.

  • If Firefox is set as the default browser, and any application attempts to open a new window, this fails and I get the error "Firefox is already running..."

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
    UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
    Test Cases:
    All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.

Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
    Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable.

  • Doesn't start when starting as administrator. Error Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

Update firefox, it asked me to update flash, I tried to update flash but it said I had to close firefox. A box came up and said the Flash install would continue when I closed firefox. I closed all firefox windows and no update of flash occurred. I tried relaunching firefox but got the "Doesn't start when starting as administrator. Error Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." message. I rebooted the system, no improvement. I tried to run firefox as administrator and got the same message. Either I find a fix or I won't be able to use firefox and will have to go back to ie.

  • Firefox is already running, but is not responding, and neither is Firefox Safe Mode.

    Hi.
When ever I try and open Firefox, it says,
''Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.''
I tried restarting my computer, updating to the latest plugins using the Firefox Plugin Check (which is really convenient) and I even tried uninstalling Firefox and getting the new Firefox 4. However, nothing worked.
I searched for the problem on this site and it told me to run Firefox Safe Mode. I right clicked my Firefox icon and when I clicked Firefox Safe Mode, the same dialog came up and causing not even Firefox Safe Mode to run. No other Firefox window is open and task manager is informing me that no other Firefox application is running.
Thank you for reading this. Firefox is my favorite web browser and I really do not want to switch to something else.

I upgraded to 4.0b4 Beta 2 days ago and I have had no crashes, no failure to close and all of the Java script problems have vanished.
Normally I'd not advise people to rush out and try beta versions but this one seems more stable than the official release!

  • When I open Firefox I get the message "Firefox is already running but not responding . . .

I am using Firefox 3.6.9 with Windows XP SP3. Almost every time I try to open Firefox I get the message:
"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
I then must open Task Manager and find Firefox and stop the process.
I run Firefox on 4 Windows machines and this is the only machine that I have this problem on.
I have looked at the Mozilla Firefox KB and have tried to check on the items that could be causing the problem. I have update my Java in Firefox. I have un-installed Firefox leaving the Bookmark preferences, etc. on my machine, ran CCleaner to clean the Registry of remaining Firefox items and then re-installed Firefox - I still have the problem.
I have installed Google Chrome to fix this problem but now I find that several of the websites and companies I do business with are not compatible with Chrome.
How can I fix this problem? Why am I only having this issue on 1 of my 4 Windows machines?
    Thanks!
