Firefox is asking me to install a critical software update. Is this ligit?
The pop up blocker tells me that it has stopped a site (facebook, comcast, many others) from installing software on my computer. Then a red bar appears at the top of the browser saying "Critical Software updates available, please allow". This happens only on my kids XP computer running firefox 3.6.16, not my Vista machine with the same version. Norton Antivirus has not found anything. This also does not happen on Internet Explorer on the XP machine. Has anybody else seen this?

That does not seem legitimate. When a new Firefox update is available you get a pop-up box similar to the attached image, or for a minor update it will say "An update to Firefox is available" and give the Firefox version number. You are currently using the latest version of Firefox 3.6 so you should not get that pop-up.
You can get a bar across the top with an Allow button if a site is trying to install an extension. You will not get a message from Firefox stating "Critical Software updates available, please allow", so I would treat this as something malicious.
To ensure the computer is not infected, try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:

* Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Software update ask for a restart before installing the updates. After the restart password is asked. When given the computer is restarted but the software updates have not been installed. How come?

I noted that one of the updates in the list for my wife's iMac was an update to Software Update itself. Probably to fix this very problem. But it wasn't being applied due to Software Update itself not working.
I considered two solutions.
(1) Uncheck all the updates except that one update to Software Update. Then after fixing Software Update, apply all the other updates remaining. I did NOT try this approach.
(2) Download and install the "combo update" for 10.6 -- from here

I decided to try solution #2. It's a large download, 1 GB, but the whole process took less than 15 minutes. The "combo" update checks and reapplies every update since the beginning of 10.6, so if something is missing or amiss, it gets filled in. It's done manually, by downloading the update, opening the .dmg file, and running the update. When I did this, it fixed the Software Update issue because I then reran Software Update and additional, new updates were found and they all installed fine. Software Update was working as it should. I then ran it a third time and some additional ones were found, also then successfully applied. Finally, no new updates were found by Software Update, which mean everything is up to date.
I can't be sure if your issue is the same as mine (the bug in the CNET article above) but I'm guessing that the combo update will resolve your issue. -

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Do a clean (re-)install:
* Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox. -

MAC PRO10.6.8 just downloaded file sent 5/2010 "BoogieWoogie" (1-wmv) I could play it then, but now it says I cannot open because its not in a format that Quicktime Player understands that I have to install addit'l software to open this type of file??? If anyone is running 10.8. or later, then they might have to right or control click on the installer or app to "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper controls at least once, then it learns it's a ok to be trusted program. -
I got a software update message this morning and clicked install and restart. Now my e-mail icon has disappeared from the dashboard. How do I get it back?
Don't recall the exact wording. But it is the same in appearance as others. Anyway, problem solved using RogerWilmut1 reply to someone else. I opened Applications and got the icon back. Thanks for responding.

Going to the current version of Mountain Lion (Version 10.8.2) requires a $20 purchase (upgrade fee) from the App Store.
Further, if your iMac is older than mid-2007, it cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion. Only mid-2007 or newer iMacs can handle it. -

I just installed the latest software update on my iPhone this weekend (9/22/12), and now I can't get email. I've restarted and closed all my apps to no avail. I'm able to get email on my laptop, so it's not a problem with my provider. Any ideas?
Originally we were getting the error that the phone could not connect. Then, after deleting the account multiple times and re-adding it again, the error message CHANGED to having to log in to Yahoo and authorize.
When we went to Yahoo in a regular browser and logged in there was an alert telling us about connection attempts so it disabled mobile/iphone connectivity. It required that we change our password FIRST.
Then, we went in to Manage Apps and Webpages and saw that iPhone was not there but Facebook was.
After all of this went back to the phone and deleted then re-added the account again and SUCCESS!
It now also shows up on the Yahoo Manage Apps and Webpages.

This is the message I get when I click on the hard drive I wan to install it on, I have two hard drives, neither want to work with it. the one with the osx 10.5 has 63 gb left and the empty one has 102gb left.
