Firefox is auto-clearing browser history

Since upgrading to Firefox 4, it seems to be auto-pruning my web history to the last day and a half. How can I stop it from doing this? I haven't changed anything in my settings since upgrading. Is privacy.clearOnShutdown.history related?

  • How to restore a previous session after firefox closed and cleared browsing history, is still any chance to get it back there?

Accidentally shut down the pc and firefox did not come back with option restore previous session at the first screen even in History-Restory previous session is Grey. My settings are clean history after firefox is closed.
Is there any change to get back on my Tabs from previous session even the history browsing was cleaned? I would appreciate your help!

In general FireFox will behave in 1 of 3 ways when restarted after a shutdown.
    1. Kill Shutdown
This happens when the FireFox process is terminated with a TerminateProcess() call or if the FireFox process crashes. It is a dirty exit, no clean-up is done. When restarted after this FireFox will show a "Well this is embarrassing" dialog with options to restore selected parts of the previous session.
    2. Force Shutdown
This happens when another process asks FireFox to shutdown cleanly (such as a PC restart) by a call to ExitProcessEx() and does not ask the user for confirmation. Normally, when this type of shutdown occurs, Firefox will just restore all tabs and sessions without asking. However if Firefox is set to automatically delete history on shutdown, it can't. I suspect this is your situation. I would suggest to the FF team that deleting history should be skipped in this case, only a user shutdown should delete history.
    3. User shutdown.
This is when the user tells Firefox to close down (by selecting Exit or closing all tabs etc..). Confirmation is asked to close all tabs (if enabled and more than 1 tab is open). On restart, nothing is restored.
Unfortunately, if you have auto clear history enabled, there's no way to recover the previous session. Sorry.

Crap thought that text was all the characters I was allotted, not just the title.
Anyway I wouldn't have even posted this if you guys would have allowed me to reply to the already existing thread I found through google. Said about 20 or so people had the same problem and no one found the contributor's answer useful, including myself.
Anyway, I use Firefox, because it is one of two (other being internet explorer) that Trend Micro's security package includes protection with. Same with spyware blaster which I also use but Trend Micro is the deal breaker. Also I like Firefox 4 and your ad blocker is better than google chrome's. However if I continue to have problems with clearing my browser history it is back to Opera and Google Chrome for me. IObit Security supports both of them, it also seems to be the best security system I have ever come across, I will just pay for their subscription and stop using Trend Micro.
This is a very big problem I hope it is being addressed. Only addon I have is your ad blocker. Also this is completely on your end, not ours. I am the perfect test, my computer is brand new, and by brand new I mean I just started using it the other day, the same day my firefox browser kept crashing as I attempted to clear my browsing history.
Windows 7, 8GBs RAM, AMD athlon II quad core 2.90 GHz
Can't even clear an hours worth of browsing history without firefox crashing.

  • When I try to clear browsing history the page locks up and I get a 'programme not responding' message

I go to 'Tools' click 'clear browsing history'. Nothing happens and when I try to shut down the page, the 'Programme not responding' box appears.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Firefox 4 forgets all my APP TAB tabs when configured to automatically clear browsing history when Firefox closes? Not much of a feature!

    When I configure
Options>Privacy>History -> Clear history when Firefox closes -> When I quit Firefox, it should automatically clear all: -> Browsing History
all of my App Tab tabs are cleared, as well. Do I have to give up my privacy in order to use the App Tab feature?

You can try to select only one setting at the time in [[Clear Recent History]] to see which one is causing the crash.

  • Started to clear browse history and now I can't open Firefox at all for the past four hours

I am on a MacBook Pro and recently was prompted to upgrade Firefox. Since the upgrade, I found surfing the internet harder as I frequently found Firefox...not crashing...but it would get stuck trying to open up or to open up a new page or site. I looked this up in Firefox support and found something called "hanging" and this sounded like what I was experiencing. Looking through I tried finding the various solutions. Nothing helped. I did try to clear the browsing history. Each time I tried that, it locked up with the spinning thinking wheel. Then, I tried resetting the preferences to clear on exit and then exited. Ever since then, I cannot get Firefox to launch to the internet at all. I get "not responsive" on a right-click. Please help. I love my Firefox. - Lynda

    Hello Guy.
First of all, and although possibly not related to your problem, I will remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment as been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum stability, performance, security and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com].
As for your issue, you may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

  • How do I clear browsing history on Foxfire?

my internet browsing history is retained even after I reboot my phone. how can I clear my browsing history? thank you.

  • Choosing only to clear Browsing History on shutdown also clears Download History

In Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> History, I have "Use custom settings for history" selected. Under that, I have "Remember my browsing and download history " checked, as well as "Clear history when firefox closes" checked. In those settings, I only have "Browser History" checked. When I close and then re-open Firefox, the Browsing History has been cleared while things such as the Cache and Cookies have been retained. However, the Download History is also cleared, despite me never having checked that option.

Do you still see the downloads in the Downloads folder the Bookmarks and History Manager (Library)?
    * History > Show All History
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Firefox keeps deleting my browsing history without warning

I have never had this problem before but all of a sudden Firefox keeps deleting all my browsing history even though I have it set to keep history and cookies. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, I've tried going through the Firefox options for my history and now I'm fed up. I like being able to use the predictive web address when surfing so any information as to why this is happening would be wonderful.

Try to delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • IPad auto deleting browser history in safari

My partners iPad(1) 16GB WiFi (Firmware 4.3.3) is deleting all browser history sparadically. For example it was there for 1 week and then deleted for 2 days running. Is this a reported fault or are they just manually clearing the history to hide stuff?

    Ok...maybe preferences are corrupted...
    Go to ~/Library/Prerferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari, go to the menu bar click History > Clear History
If that helped, move the .plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. If not, just move it back to the Preferences folder.
If you don't want history saved when you visit Facebook, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Private Browsing

  • Do App Tabs work if I automatically clear browsing history when I clost FF?

I have my privacy settings such that everything clears when I close FF. Do I have to keep my browsing history in order for App Tabs to work? Right now, they don't reappear when I start FF, but I'm not sure which box to uncheck on the "clear history" list.

Tap the two square on top right for Private Browsing.

  • How can I lock "clear history" on my iPad Safari, so that you need a password to clear browsing history?

I am looking to lock my browsing history, so that other people cannot clear the history without my permission.

You most likely have 'Restrictions' enabled on websites. Go to  Settings > General > Restrictions and check if it says 'On'. If it  does, enter you PIN and go to the 'Allowed Content' section. Under this  section there is an entry for 'Websites'. Tap this and select the 'All  Websites' option.
This should bring back the Clear History button as well as the Private browsing button.
This  is actually quite clever on part of Apple. This is a form of parental  control where you enable restrictions on the websites that can be  visited and then obviously you would want to check on the actual  websites that have been visited. Hence, Apple disables the Clear History  and Private browsing options. Apple obviously has hidden this fact,  deep. There could be a better way of doing this but, this is what we  have for the time being.

  • I know that history can be cleared if you want it to, however it can also be restored if you wish, how to permanently clear browse history

Ive always wanted my history cleared, however, when sometimes i use public computers, you dont want anyone restoring your browse history especially when what you are browsing are extremely important sites

I may have hoped a public computer would give you a private account or a temporary one that would clear after use. Have a read of these two articles they should help explain the available options:
    * [[private browsing]] <-- clickable link -- (blue) --
*[[clear recent history]] (this includes other linked articles)
There are limits to what you can hide, but you need not leave info lying around for other users to look at.
