Firefox is displaying certain characters/sentences incorrectly

Firefox has for a while now, displayed certain words in gibberish.
The majority of text on a site is fine, however i come across certain websites where the headers/text in boxes (dynamic text? i don't have a clue) displays in an unreadable language, but it appears that the spell checker plug-in I have installed seems to recognise words spelt incorrectly in this gibberish.
I have looked at the settings, and the default text is set to times new roman, which every computer seems to have.
Please see the link to see my problem.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Matt

Your screenshot didn't attach properly, only the thumbnail shows.<br />
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).
Make sure that you choose an unique name for the image to avoid problems (an image with the same name may already exist). There should be a delete X on the image if the image is uploaded correctly.
Such issues can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.<br />
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.<br />
A possible test is to zoom out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
You need to uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font.

  • Firefox not displaying certain symbols

I can't display certain symbols on Firefox.
Example: <code><span>&equiv;</span></code> does not show anything on the page I'm working on. However, a symbol like <code> <span>&rsaquo;</span> </code> would show.
I discovered a hack that displays the symbol by changing the tag. <code><h4>&equiv;</h4></code> with an h1, h2 tag and so on, it will display the symbol. This hack, however is semantically incorrect and I don't want it in my site just so the symbol can display on Firefox. My site already has the <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> just as this one.
    Any suggestions?

Okay, so this is what I did: I took the whole source code of that page http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Unicode/Character_reference/2000-2FFF which displays all the symbols correctly, but as soon as I changed the symbol tag from td to span it vanished. So it looks that when wrapped on some tags, the symbols won't display.
A little more information, I'm working on a Wordpress theme, but I did a plain HTML page with the same results. The symbol displays on Safari, Chrome and Opera, I'm yet to try it on IE.

  • Webpage not displaying certain characters correctly. Similar question already asked but not quite the same

I am using version 4.0.1 and it was a clean install after I reformatted my hard drive and did all the updates. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a 3.0 Ghz CPU with Hyperthreading and 2 GB memory.
On this one particular website I belong to, where a colon is supposed to be, I get this little square box with the letters FF IR in it. I have the default settings for Western (ISO-8859-1) for the Default Character Encoding.
I've asked other members of that website and they have the same settings, but they see the colon and not the FF IR.
I will include a link for the site and I don't think you have to sign up to view it and I did a screen shot for both Mozilla/Firefox 4.0.1 and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 but in Internet Explorer, where the colon is supposed to be there is just a little square.
I will include a link to the site and if you scroll down to post # 2, you will see the screen shots of the problem for both Mozilla/Firefox and Internet Explorer.

I know you can't help with Microsoft programs and that is fine as I only used Internet Explorer for Microsoft Updates and to download Mozilla/Firefox.
Initially the responses from the site owner didn't have any problems on his end, but another person gave me some tips but they didn't work and then we found out that it is indeed supposed to be a colon.
I didn't have this problem with earlier versions, but when I had to reformat and reinstall everything, the only version I could download from Mozilla/Firefox was 4.0.1

I'm not sure what screen shot you are referring to, but if it is in your initial reply, before you typed the thing about''' "I do not seem to have a font to display" ''' But I see the FF IR and then the FF IR with quotation marks on each side.
Then pretty much of the whole page instead of having different characters for each font set, it shows several rows of FF IR.
I did notice the same problem today with a site I belong to that I take surveys for, the whole page was filled with FF IR
If the oxFFoo - oxFFFF block, I actually went to the search function for the page the link you included brings me too and neither of them showed up so I don't know what to do. I did earlier try to do a search for how to add the : font to my Unicode and the first thing that came up was "Basic Latin" Unicode Character 'COLON' (U+003A
Someone from the website I'm having the problem with told me something about UTF-8 encoding and gave me a link to check why Firefox doesn't detect UTF-8 encoding. I checked the fonts and under UTF, it starts with UTF-16 so I guess I have to figure a way to add UTF-8.
I thank you again for your help.

  • CR not displaying certain characters.

    Afternoon,
I hope this is the best forum for my question/problem otherwise would appreciate a push in the right direction.
    Working in Eclipse 3.4.1
    Crystal Reports for Eclipse  v2.0.4.r825
    Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.8.0
    NLS_Characterset:  EE8ISO8859P2
The situation is that I am working with a DB that has Slovakian characters in it.
For example "Hodžovo námestie 3" The ž is not being handled correctly.
If I setup a database connection using the Oracle Thin driver (ojdbc14.jar) I get ? returned on the report in place of the ž or
if I try browse the data by right clicking on the specific column in the "Data" screen, I get a square instead.
If I copy the text into a text box, it can display correctly on the report so this leads me to believe it is not the font settings
that are causing the problems, but rather how the database drivers are interpreting the specific character.
I have tried playing around with the NLS but I have not had too much luck.
The NLS_LANGUAGE item in the registry is "ENGLISH_UNITED KINGDOM.EE8ISO8859P2" so as far as I can tell all enviromental
references to character set are all correctly set to ISO-8859-2.
If I run a SQL query in SLQ*Plus Worksheet, I get the correct string returned : "Hodžovo námestie 3" so I know the data in the
    database is stored correctly.
Can anyone give me an idea of what I am doing wrong, what I need to do to solve the problem,
or if you need more info can you tell me what you need and how to get it for you?
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
    Cheers
    Darren

    Thanks Don,
I decided to try another approach, and created a SQL Scrapbook with the following SQL:
    SELECT USERENV ('language') FROM DUAL;
Now the result I get when running the same SQL using the exact same conneciton details on SQL*Plus Worksheet is:
    ENGLISH_UNITED KINGDOM.EE8ISO8859P2
but if I run it through Eclipse and SQL Scrapbook I get the result:
    POLISH_POLAND.EE8ISO8859P2
Dont know if that gives anyone some ideas, I will see what my DBA thinks if I can get hold of him.

  • Displaying certain characters?

Hey I'm just trying to program some playing card games. At the moment the cards are just represented textually. For example the 4 of Clubs is "4c". I would like to use &#9829; &#9830; &#9827; and &#9824; (ascii equivalents 3 4 5 and 6), but when I run the program they are just output as "?". I'm using Netbeans 5.5 to compile and run right now. Do I need to include a specific package or update something, or is it just not possible.

Normally I wouldn't say this, but you might be better off going right to the GUI.
It's pretty trivial to make a card object with an associated image, that you can display on a window during gameplay.
Also there are images of decks of cards, etc., on the net that can be downloaded easily (and it's not that hard to make an image of a deck of cards programmatically either).

  • Embedding certain characters

Hi, I'm using the actionscript attached below to retrieve
text into a dynamic text box. I've also embedded a font that the
dynamic text boxes are set to display entitled 'Codex LT' by adding
it to my Library and changing the Linkage Properties to 'Export for
ActionScript' and 'Export in first frame'.
All of this works very well - the text is retrieved and is
displayed as Codex LT even on computers that don't have the font
installed. The only problem is that the dynamic text box refuses to
display certain characters such as '+' and '€', even though
it does display other similar characters such as '=' and '$'.
Do you know how I can fix this?
    Many thanks,
    Leo

Thanks for your reply, I tried adding more glyphs via the
Embed option in the dynamic text box's properties box but it has
zero effect. I tried adding all the Latin characters, then I tried
to add the '+' character via the 'Include these characters:' option
and then I tried the 'All (39477) glyphs' option but after each
attempt I published my movie and the '+' character failed to
    appear.
I originally embedded the Codex LT font by importing it into
my library and changing the 'Linkage properties', as when I tried
to embed the font via the Embed option in the properties panel it
didn't seem to embed the font at all.
Do you have any other suggestions? Perhaps there are some
tricks to make sure all the characters of a font are embedded into
    a movie.
    Cheers – Leao

  • Why does Firefox have trouble displaying certain Unicode Plane 1 characters (specifically, Phoenician)?

Hi. I'm trying to get Firefox to display characters from ancient scripts. I have installed all the necessary fonts, and changed the encoding to Unicode. When I try to view Phoenician and Imperial Aramaic characters (other scripts too), I just get boxes with numbers (10900 and so forth). I have a laptop that is able to display these characters but I need to be able to see them on my current system.

    Try installing the font "aegean".
You can find the font here

  • [Bug Report] CR4E V2: Exported PDF displays Japanese characters incorrectly

We now plan to transport a legacy application from VB to Java with Crystal Reports for Eclipse. It is required to export report as PDF file, but result PDFs display Japanese characters incorrectly for field with some mostly used Japanese fonts (MS Gothic & Mincho).
Here is our sample Crystal Reports project:   [download related resources here|http://sites.google.com/site/cr4eexportpdf/example-of-cr4e-export-pdf]
    1. PDFExportSample.rpt located under ..\src contains fields with different Japanese fonts.
    2. Run SampleViewerFrameClient#main(..) to open a Java Report Viewer:
        a) At zoom rate 100%, everything is ok.
        b) Change zoom rate to 200% or 50%, some fields in Japanese font collapse.
        c) Export to PDF file,
             * Fonts "MS Gothic & Mincho": both ASCII & Japanese characters failed.
             * Fonts "Meiryo & HGKyokashotai": everything works well.
             * Open PDF properties, you will see all fonts are embedded with built-in encoding.
             * Interest to note that copy collapsed Japanese characters from Acrobat Reader, then
paste them into a Notepad window, Notepad will show the correct Japanese characters anyway.
It seems PDF export in CR4E mistaking to choose right typeface for Japanese characters
               from some TTF file.
    3. Open PDFExportSample.rpt in Crystal Report 2008 Designer (trial version), and export it as PDF.
The result PDF displays both ASCII & Japanese characters without any problem.
    Test environment as below:
    * Windows XP Professional SP3 (Japanese) with MS Office which including extra fonts (i.e. HGKyokashotai)
    * Font version: MS Gothic, Mincho, Meiryo, all in Version 5.0
You can download MS Meiryo from Microsoft's Site:
        http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=F7D758D2-46FF-4C55-92F2-69AE834AC928&displaylang=en)
    * Eclipse 3.5.2
    * Crystal Reports for Eclipse, V2, 12.2.207.r916
Can this problem be fixed? If yes how long will it take to release a patch?
We really looking forward to a solution before abandoning CR4E.
    Thanks for any reply.

I have created a [simple PDF file|http://sites.google.com/site/cr4eexportpdf/inside-the-pdf/simple.pdf?attredirects=0&d=1] exported from CR4E. It is expected to display "漢字" (or in unicode as "\u6F22\u5B57"), but instead being rendered in different ones of "殱塸" (in unicode as "\u6BB1\u5878").

It seems everything OK except CR4E failed to choose right typefaces from the TrueType file (msgothic.ttc).
Is it any help? I am looking forward to any solution.

  • Firefox 4 not displaying certain content

On the below website, since firefox 4 was released it was working fine, but since firefox 4, it doesnt display certain text, please see below the two links provided of pictures, one displaying a picture from Microsoft IE, and Firefox version.

Firefox (It's not displaying certain text):
    http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/2622/firefoximg.png
Now is this due to the HTML used or the browser?
    Thanks

This is a little hard to diagnose from the pictures. I'm guessing that the box comes up blank at first and then is filled in from the server in real time after you make a selection from the drop-down control. Is that how it is supposed to work?
(Edit: I assumed the box was blank, but in case it is "white on white", you could try selecting that area, which would make it possible to see whether anything is there.)
Is there any part of the site that can be used without a login that demonstrates the same problem? (I went to the demo, but it's just a Flash movie...)
If not, you could check Firefox's Error Console (Tools menu). First click Clear, then reload the page that you want to use. There may be lots of warnings, but is anything marked with the "X" error symbol? Then click the link or button or drop-down that should populate the information. Check the Error Console for new errors. Although it's rare that you could fix such errors from your end, it might be possible, or you could report them to the site.

  • FireFox doesn't display special characters!

I'm sure this has been talked about before but I can't find
any related posts... Basically I have a flash app that will take a
text variable through the querystring and disaply, the problem is
it needs to take 11 different languages which works fine in IE once
all the special glyphs for the languages are embedded. But in
Firefox it displays only standard ascii latin characters! Please
    help!

    Hi Rifaet,
Good news. There is a simple way to fix the FireFox special
character problem. Use and external .js file to store a function to
write the embed tag and it will work, it has the added bonus of
fixing the new 'problem' with internet explorer also.
    myFlash.js
    function writeflash() {
    document.write ('<embed..... usual flash tagset
and then in your HTML document where the embed tag previously
    was you just place:
    <script>myFlash();</script>
See how to do it here, the first example is easy

  • Certain characters such as "-" in UTF-8 are not displayed correctly in file

    Hi,
Has anyone else seen a similar scenario?
There are certain characters entered in the R/3 system (UTF-8) such as a and ("), which looks different then the normal dash or quotation, in a free form text field.  The values of these fields are transferred through XI via abap proxy and written to a mainframe file via the file adapter.  The default file encoding of our XI system is ISO-8859-1.  When the file is created these characters are interpreted as a (?).   When we change the encoding to UTF-8 in the receiver adapter, it translates the characters as (b.).  When I write the file out to the file system with encoding UTF-8, everything looks normal.
Can anyone shed some light on this situation?
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Duke

    Hi Stefan,
To clarify, the (") the user is entering are curly quotes.  I found this on google.
Windows ANSI (224 characters; since Win3.1). This adds the accented characters common in Western European languages (including vowels with acute, grave, circumflex and umlaut accents), plus some other typographical symbols like u201Ccurly quotesu201D, bullets, currency symbols etc. The additional 126 characters above the ASCII set are called u201CUpper ANSIu201D.
This is a flat file using content conversion on the receiver file adapter.  In SXMB_MONI it looks correct.  If I do a view source, I can see that the quotations are the "curly quotes" and not the same as when I enter the character.
    Best Regards,
    Duke
