Firefox is hanging constantly

Hello there,
I am running Firefox 4.0 on a Macbook Pro running the latest OS X. Recently after installing the new Firefox I have had a recurring problem every single time I load Firefox up. It loads my two home pages and responds normally for 30 seconds but then will hang leaving the page frozen and unresponsive only displaying firefox in the tool bar (all other options disappear) with the only way to close the window being to close firefox completely. I have to minimise the page then open a new window and the new window functions normally. If I immediately close the first window then the new window will crash, closing tabs or changing home pages, clearing cache, cookies and the like makes no difference either.
Is there any way to stop the first window hanging so I can use firefox without having to open another window. I uninstalled and reinstalled an older version but the problem remains. I have only had this problem since I first upgraded to firefox 4.0, before that firefox worked like a dream.

Thank you for the help! However, I do not think it worked
I made a TXT file named
mms.cfg
and entered
ProtectedMode=0
in it. I put that file here
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
Then I opened Firefox. I opened a yahoo mail account. I t quickly hanged and, in about 60 seconds, i had three each of
FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_224
and
plugin-container (plugin-container.exe *32 to be precise).
Any further help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Kail

• Why does Firefox 4 hang CONSTANTLY?!

Firefox hangs constantly, anywhere from the initial load-up to 40 minutes into my browsing. It doesn't seem to be related to any particular site, but it seems to happen slightly more often while loading a video. I'm running windows 7 x64 on a Turion processor. I have to open task manager and end the Firefox process every time, and when I start it back up, sometims it displays the "Oops" screen, and sometimes it doesn't. I've always been a huge fan of firefox since the initial release, and I love everything about FF4 except this constant hanging, but this is unacceptable, and if this issue isn't fixed soon, I'll HAVE to jump ship.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile<br />
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"<br />
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

• I have updated the squite.places file to prevent Firefox from hanging constantly. This seems to have worked but now I can't see the comments on news websites.

Over the last few days Mozilla Firefox has been hanging every few seconds. I updated the squite.places file as instructed which seems to have corrected the problem, however it has had a side effect. I can no longer see the comments on newspaper sites, e.g. The Times, the Independent both of which I believe use Disqus. Does anyone know how to fix this?

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

• Firefox 6 hangs constantly, just like 3.6.21 and its predecessors did.

Just like FF version 3.6.21 and its predecessors, the new FF 6 hangs when it's been running for a while, especially with multiple tabs/window open. Before upgrading to 6.0.1, I did all the self-help measures possible, clearing all FF history, downloads, cache, cookies, clearing the Mac's caches as well, resetting parameter ram, running disk utility, repairing permissions, etc. No luck. I truly thought the ongoing issue was due to my older FF version 3.6.21, so I installed 6.0.1. Unfortunately, the newest version 6.0.1 did not change the situation. FF hangs when left open for an extended period of time. I even upgraded to 6.0.2 recently, but the problem still persists.
It hangs at various times, and there is not one particular action that triggers it. When FF hangs, it affects everything else that is open, whether it is a Word document, Excel spreadsheets, PDFs etc. I am continually forced to shut FF down and start over. Upon a restart, FF and all other applications work beautifully, but after a while, slowly but surely, FF begins to misbehave, the spinning beach ball appears intermittently, till it becomes a constant, FF becomes totally unresponsive, and I have to Force Quit FF.
Nothing else has changed on my Mac, I have not installed any new software, the only thing that has changed is something within FF. The newer FF browsers of the last 6 months all have to be babied. I live in fear when having more than one window or tab open, lest FF start to hang and I end up losing everything I was working on, because upon a restart, FF is having trouble recovering my tabs. I used to be able to have 10 windows open with multiple tabs, along with several Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and PDFs all open at the same time, with no problems, ho hangs, and no restarts! What is going on lately?
I even spent half a day with Apple Technical Support on two occasions, to see if there was an internal problem with my Mac that was causing these issues. The diagnostics turned out fine. We did everything under the sun to resolve any potential glitches, and I hoped that when I next opened FF that all would be working smoothly, but alas, no luck. When FF is left open for several hours, it eventually freezes up (FF not responding) and I am forced to Force Quit FF and start over. Again, and again, and again.
FF I got your new browser because you promised me faster speed. That is not the case; I am working at a snail’s pace due to the constant hanging episodes. There is clearly a glitch with the newer FF browsers and Mac OS 10.5.8, and it has become a MONSTROUS issue for me. Please have technical support address this problem as soon as possible. I otherwise love the new FF 6. You made some very good changes to it, which I appreciate very much. But unless this hanging issue is fixed, I will not be able to continue using FF as my browser. It has hampered me significantly to date, and I can’t afford to let this go on much longer. I am hoping you will develop a fix in the very near future. Please post back and let me know if there is a cure on the way. Thank you.

Thank you scoobidiver. I think that may be exactly what the problem is. Although I have had FF hang at other times when little activity was going on. It just does not seem very stable to me for a long while now, even back to the FF 3.6 days.
Is FF 7 even available for Mac 10.5.8? I thought I had the latest at 6.0.2.

• Firefox is hanging A LOT.

My firefox is hanging almost every couple of minutes. Usually when looking at videos or games, but it had hung on a site as well. I've tried going in safe mode, cleared history, check computer for bugs. This only started since I downloaded the "upgraded" firefox. Is there a way to download a later version maybe?

Weeks of TRASH = FIREFOX 3.66
All three of my computers have been totally worthless since I upgraded to FF3.66. Each are built/configured differently. Each has a different OS. Each has all the above problems. Crashes constantly, RAM & CPU usage on a Q9650 is always near 100%. After screwing around for days I finally came here and found out that I was among a very large and upset group of users. With the last few upgrade I've had minor problems with my selection of add-ons Firefox disabled them for a later fix. I found a new DL today, 3.67 so I installed it figuring the problem was addressed. After installation of 3.67 it still says it's 3.66??
I went to their site to find help from them and couldn't get anyplace until I came here and read about my problem. Thanks for giving me a clear head so I could find a good solution.
My solution was to remove all Mozilla/Firefox products and then install other browsing options. It felt funny because for the first time in years I had to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to find other options. My computer is problem free and fast as usual now.
I wonder how many other users have abandoned them due to this BS?? I for one will probably stick with my new choices now.
YES, Weeks of TRASH = FIREFOX 3.66

• Firefox 5 crashes constantly when multiple pages are open. What's going on?

I was made by your team to update from Firefox 4.x to Firefox 5. Ever since Firefox stops responding and often crashes.
Your new feature to pin pages in the taskbar is great and I currently have 10 pages pinned that I always want up. One of them is Google+.
While in Google+ I see Firefox hang constantly. I'm not sure if it's your problem or Google's. I hadn't come to you because I assumed it was Google's problem. But I was just on Quora and it happened there as well.
Please contact me so we can figure this out. I love Firefox and I rely on it on a daily basis to get things done at work and in life in general.
Thanks

First, you can terminate a running Firefox process using the Task Manager.
Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch it
Usually by this time, Firefox is no longer listed on the Applications tab, but if it is, try terminating it there.
Click the Processes tab and look for both of these:
plugin-container.exe (used to run Flash and many other plugins)<br>
firefox.exe
Click each and then click End Process.
After that, you can close the Task Manager and you should be able to start Firefox.
As for why that happens, you could check this article: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix -- skip to the section awkwardly entitled "Firefox hangs when you quit it"

• Firefox 31 hangs on startup with no error messages

Simply put, Firefox hangs right on startup. I see it loading the two generic tabs and then the wheel spins and then it says 'Not Responding' on the top of the window. I have to force close it each and every time, and I've also tried the following solutions in no particular order to alleviate the issue:
1) Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes last night for any possible infections. Reported back with nothing.
2) Booted my laptop up in Safe Mode (with networking) and still couldn't get it to operate.
3) Performed several clean uninstalls and re-installations which also included clearing out the profiles altogether and then trying to open it again, nothing.
4) Booted up Firefox by holding down the shift key and resetted it to its default settings and then tried firing it up again. Nothing.
5) Attempted booting up FF in Safe Mode with the shift key, nothing.
6) Created a new profile and tried booting FF, nothing.
7) Read this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hyper-Threading about Hyper-Threading and followed the instructions which got it to operate, but I can't access the toolbar or the option menus. When I click on options Firefox closes with no error messages. I have a feeling this isn't the issue at hand but I figure I'd try it and at least I can get it to fully load and not hang.
8) Deleted all Firefox extensions and Plug-ins, nothing.
9) Enabled Firefox through firewall and antivirus settings, nothing.
10) Updated my BIOS firmware as suggested in #7, nothing.
I've done almost 10 different things and I still can't figure out why Firefox keeps hanging on startup. I've looked into Youtube videos for tutorials and others posted about the Java crashing that was happening in an earlier version of FF. Since its not crashing, I'm unable to look into the crash logs and pinpoint a crash number or anything because it just freezes and when I click to close it I get a message saying: 'Close program' or 'Wait for it to respond.'
I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion g6-1c44wm Notebook PC
Microprocessor 2.10 GHz Intel Pentium Processor B950

Memory 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)
Memory Max Maximum supported = 8GB
Video Graphics Intel HD Graphics
Video Memory Up to 1696MB
Hard Drive 500GB 5400RPM)
I'm trying to be specific as possible! Please help! I'm at the end of my rope here!

Try to completely uninstall firefox, that means to delete the Installation directory located for your 64bit in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ , also, delete the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox and if exist, delete the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
then download and install again a new full installer from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
disable firewall and antivirus and antispyware for a little bit, and run firefox. any luck ?
thank you

• I downloaded an update to Firefox last night, and now Firefox just hangs and won't connect. It started out okay this morning, but now it won't work at all.

Even with a brand new computer, Firefox frequently hangs and/or quits spontaneously. I downloaded the latest update last night, and it worked okay for about a half hour this morning, then quit.

Do you have Internet Security Software turned on in your Internet Explorer?
I turned mine off, as I have Norton AV. Go into Internet Explorer and check to see if you have that on and try turning that off...and then try to get back onto FF. You may have to restart your computer, I'm not sure, as I'm not a techie. I just know that the Internet Security Software clashed with my Norton AV.
Good luck!!!
Donna
PS Go with the user's suggestion above me, sounds the right way to go...thank God for the techies, eh? :)

• When uploading an image from my documents firefox 5 hangs for several seconds to a minute.

This in on an XP SP3 system. The problem seemed to have started with 3.6 and has been a constant issue even with current versions. When I upload any file firefox just hangs for a short while then it's fine for the rest of the day only to come back the next day. I relocated "my documents" and it went away, then a few weeks ago I did a clean install and the problem seemed to be gone for good. Now the problem is back.
I thought it might be a disk issue, but it checks out fine using check disk.

The speed of image searching isn't a problem for me. The trouble is, the automatic zoom function is lightning fast and I find it disturbing to the point that it makes me feel very ill.
I very much want a way of suppressing it.

• Sites using flash/shockwave cause Firefox to hang.

If the shockwave flash plugin is enabled on version >22, visiting a site that contains flash content will cause Firefox to hang/react extremely slowly. I've tried disabling all add-ons with no effect.
I'm using shockwave flash 11.2.r202.310 but it doesn't seem to matter when version of flash I use.

Thanks for the replies guys.
ComputerWhiz: No firewall or AV installed on my laptop.
cor-el: Nothing works. It is the shockwave flash plugin + >=v23 that is the problem. I've tried safemode, I've completely deleted everything eg moving the .mozilla directory and started a virgin firefox with the same results.

• Firefox 10 Crashes occassionally when clicking on a picture on facebook that loads the new popup. Firefox just hangs and becomes unresponsive. Is there a fix for this?

When u click on a picture that loads the popup that Facebook has recently introduced on occasion Firefox just hangs and becomes unresponsive and has to be closed by using task manager. It doesn't happen every time say for every 2 out of 10.

• Firefox 4 hangs at loading so I can't see the toolbar to fix it. I just downloaded it.

Firefox 4 hangs BEFORE getting the toolbar and I can't get in to change settings such as system restore settings and the other solutions you have in the help section. ALSO, your help section only shows 3.6 and earlier solutions which really bugs me. If you're going to come out with new version PLEASE put out the solutions for it.

Sorry, but I don't. Have never used a TV as a monitor. My suggestion was just a thought. Perhaps someone else will have a workable solution.
If the menubar is visible then it may be some adjustment that's needed perhaps on the TV itself which has it's own zoom. If it's set to an incorrect screen mode then it may cut off portions of the display - just a guess. Try switching the display mode on the TV to see if that resolves the problem.
As for the mini itself I'd set it to a resolution mode that most closely corresponds to what the TV can display. If it can display 1080p, then set the mini's display resolution to 1680 x 1050.

• Why my firefox is hanging every time i want to add-on (new tab)?

when i want to open a new web address in new tab(add-ons),my mozilla firefox will hanged and all the pages also hanged? should i install a new updated on add-ons?
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened

Hello.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode and select Disable all add-ons. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See this article for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

• Firefox crashes (hangs) while printing pdf (or xps)

Firefox crashes/hangs whenever I try to print pdf using Adobe Acrobat V9.5. I updated Acrobat to XI but the problem didn't go away. It crashes the same way when I try to print to xps as well.
I have to force close the browser and I see Acrobat (or XPS) conversion dialog stuck somewhere at middle afterwards.
I don't have problem printing to pdf from other applications including other browsers (Chrome and IE9). Uninstall/reinstall (complete removal including profile), reset, disabling all addons and extensions, none of these worked. Although the problem goes away when I use Firefox in safe mode. What could be the problem here? I tried disabling all addons and extensions without luck.
I saw similar problem in another thread (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/994052?esab=a&as=aaq) which says it got solved after updating to V29. But I have this problem at office where I use ESR release channel currently at V24.6.
Can anyone confirm that this is a Firefox bug and has been fixed in V29? If so I can wait until next month when ESR channel jumps to V31.
PS: I use Windows 7.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion or help.
Peace

Try toggling the status of hardware acceleration under Options → Advanced → General, then restart Firefox.
* Advanced settings for… hardware acceleration
If there's no problem in Safe Mode, that suggests an issue with an add-on, a preference or a file in the profile, or hardware acceleration. Since you've already ruled out the other two, hardware acceleration is all that's left to try.

For me, Firefox will simply not print to XPS, though Internet Explorer doesn't have any trouble. Others have reported hanging when text is pasted into the "Save As" dialog. I haven't seen any reports of crashes, though that may be specific to the older version of Firefox you're using.
