Firefox is open but not responding

I recently began having this issue with Firefox running in the background after closing the browser. Issue is intermittent but it occurs more often than not. Issue can occur by simply opening Firefox and then closing it without visiting any website - my default homepage is about:blank.
This issue began immediately when I updated Firefox from 24 to 25. The extensions I have are Noscipt, Adblock Plus and Fireshot. All are very popular. It appears that if I disable all extensions, then the issue doesn't appear. But if I add one of the above extensions, the issue appears. Therefore, it doesn't appear related to any specific extension - just the fact that there is any extension.
When I uninstalled Firefox 25 and reinstalled Firefox 24, the issue disappeared. When I updated to Firefox 25 through the upgrade process, or even through a direct 25 install without going through 24, the issue reappeared.
What is interesting is the issue does not occur every single time nor is it connected to any one specific extension or profile as I created a new profile and only imported my bookmarks.

But I shouldn't have to do that, right? Chrome and any other program I use in Windows doesn't require force-closing in the Task Manager. Been a Firefox user for years and did not have to do that on a regular basis like I now need to for 25.
I've not seen any official report from Firefox taking some accountability for this issue as an official bug - just the usual reply of trying Safe Mode and it being an AV, Firewall, or Extension issue.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

Sounds like Firefox is "hanging at exit". That problem is frequently caused by an Extension or a Plugin. Read all of the following articles.<br /><br />

  • Get message firefox already running but not responding when trying to launch..tells me to close firefox wondow and try again (no ffox window is open)

When trying to launch Firefox I get the following message.
"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
This is not the first time and I am tired of having to restart my computer. BTW I have Firefox as my default browser, but had to use IE to get to this support site!
In answer to the next question...every time I TRY to open Firefox.

Simple fix for you I think--it works for me.
    1. Open your TASK MANAGER (rt click on your taskbar)
    2. Go to PROCESSES
    3. Scroll down until you see "firefox.exe"(or anything with the word Firefox in it)
    4. Click(highlight) the "firefox.exe"
    5. At the bottom right side, click "End Process"
    6. Close the Task Manager and do whatever you were attempting to do.
    Cheers

    thanks for your help

It is often possible to find and kill processes even if not on a taskbar. You will be looking for firefox.exe . I use Windows XP pro and could use the Taskkill command or TaskManager, other OS will have similar facilities .
    See
    *[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491009.aspx MS link]
    *[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_%28command%29 Wiki kill]
Another [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/770309 thread] suggests deleting profile.ini may solve similar problems, in some cases (but be careful; you are likely to loose information)

  • Upon opening a new tab, it auto selects the address bar. Also when closing firefox, you must wait 5 seconds before re-opening or you get an error saying it's already open but not responding. Please help!

Please help with this annoying problem - the firefox main start page that runs off google accel. should set it to the dialog box to search so you can begin typing A.S.A.P
Same with other websites like bing and google.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Try to wait a bit longer before reopening Firefox to give Firefox more time to close completely.
Try to use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

  • We have an iMac desktop computer and Firefox is opened but not functioning. Safari works, so it isn't the computer's fault. How can we fix Firefox?

Can we talk to a tech support person?

    Billweins,
What you could try to do is (if not done yet) :
    # Uninstall Firefox
#Download Firefox most recent version from [[http://mozilla.org/firefox Mozilla]]
    #Re-install Firefox.
If the error persists, I would tell you to follow these steps :
We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing when you open it. Please do the following to give us crash IDs that will help us understand more about the crash.
#'''(OS X 10.6 or previous)''' Click the '''Finder''' icon in the dock. Your home folder will be selected. In the right side of the window, click the Library folder to open it. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.<br>'''(OS X 10.7 or above)''' Click the '''Finder''' icon in the dock. On the menu bar, click the '''Go''' menu, hold down the '''option''' or '''alt''' key and select '''Library'''. A window will open containing your Library folder. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.
#Open the 5 most recent files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Firefox will open but not load any new tabs or windows after a set amount of time.

After about a day of my computer running, Firefox will stop being able to browse the web at all. Any attempt to open a new window, tab, or refresh an old tab will result in the program not doing anything, or opening a new window/tab with (Untitled) in it. The window cannot be navigated away from this, and will not refresh. Closing Firefox does not solve the problem, nor does ending the process. The only way to restore Firefox's functionality is to restart my machine.

hello spitcher, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

  • "Close Firefox - Error Message -. Firefox already running, but not responding -.." A real pain - Firefox worked much better before all the updates!! How do I fix this?

This pop-up appears anytime I attempt to close Firefox and immediately open another browser, etc.
Suspect it is add-ons related. Never had the problem with "older" version of Firefox.
It is a real nuisance, almost makes me go to Explorer!

Try to wait a bit longer (up to 1 minute or maybe more) as it can take some time for Firefox to close completely.

  • FCPX opens but not responding when I try to duplicate/export project

    Hey guys,
I've been working on a project which has bloated to over 23GB for just over 2 minutes of video. It's filled with keyframe animations, backgrounds and dense layers of clips (which is running my 2009 13" MBP into the ground).
The program continues to freeze whenever I try to alter it, I really need to move it onto an external device but when I select "duplicate project" and "copy project and referenced events" it freezes after clicking ok.
I'm pretty sure there's a toxic clip or animation within the project that is causing the problem, as when I open the Console under the Utilities section the error report reads:
"Final Cut Pro: CoreAnimation: warning, deleted thread with uncommitted CA"
    and then
"Final Cut Pro: CGBitmapContextCreate: unsupported parameter combination:"
before continuing with "invalid context" errors.
There is no backups folder in the project folder in finder, only render files and shared items so I can't restore a version before the toxic animation.
Ideally, before moving projects and events around as most people suggest I would like to have a backup as I have spent many long hours working on the edit.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing FCPX to freeze and know what I should move where? I don't understand when people say "restore clips" after you have moved project/event folders around. Plus, do you move project and event folders from within the finder or from within the program? Currently FCPX freezes before I can duplicate or move the project.
    Thanks!

Mostly 1080p 24 fps .mov files, plus some images and then animated titles.
I've managed to find an early version from before the "toxic" animation so I'm working from that but it's incredbily slow.
Playback and rendering is seriously slow, but looking at the Activity Monitor that seems to be because my CPU is at 200% whilst RAM has around 1gb free. I'm on a 2.53 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, would an i5 or i7 make a huge difference?
I can only go as fast as Firewire 800, would you reccommend editing from there? I was thinking of getting a G Drive 2tb... My MBP doesn't have USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt capability unfortunately.
