Firefox is repeatedly overloading my CPU

My problems with high CPU usage by Firefox started a few weeks ago. Here are the fixes I've tried so far:
quitting firefox and opening new browser window: helps briefly, but screen freezes start again within a minute or two, sometimes right away
restarting computer: doesn't help any more than quitting and restarting firefox
clearing cache and history: did not help (have done this repeatedly)
disabling extensions: did not help
updating firefox again: did not help
uninstalling firefox, removing all hidden folders, clean reinstall: seemed to fix problem initially, but after a few days, I'm right back where I started
running firefox --debug with gdb installed: gdb found no debugging symbols
turning off chat in Facebook: did not help
I am currently running Firefox 10.0.2 with Linux Mint 9 (Isadora). My configuration is x86_64-linux-gnu. I generally keep browser tabs open for email, Words with Friends (my only regular use of Facebook) and Ravelry, with one or two other tabs open as needed for other tasks.
Possibly useful information from my system information summary:
Processor : 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU, 550 @ 3.20GHz
Memory: 5922MB (1268MB used)
Since the clean re-install of Firefox, I have only added one extension (Add to Search Bar 2.0) and re-imported my bookmarks list. The other extension and add-ons (which I presume came with the install) include Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.9.3, IcedTea Web Browser NPR Plugin, iTunes application detector, and Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102. Just for grins, I tried disabling them all again, and it made no difference. All system updates are current. I've been keeping my system monitor open and each time my browser freezes, I'm seeing 100% CPU usage by Firefox (actually, as high as 120%, although I don't know how that is possible).
Any other suggestions? I'm really motivated to keep using Firefox, but I'm not sure what else to try.
Thanks.

I am not sure I can help much here, but obviously the spec of your machine exceeds the requirements, and so I would not expect such high CPU use.
I realise malware is probably not a big problem in linux, but as you notice no problems on a clean re-install
clean reinstall: seemed to fix problem initially, but after a few days, I'm right back where I started
and have tried to rule out other causes maybe you should also consider a possibility of a malware problem.

• [Solved] embedded videos in firefox take a lot of CPU time

Playing embeded videos in Firefox take a lot of CPU time. Actually my old computer is not able to play these videos correctly if they are in HD. The problem appears with flash videos (not so surprising, flash sucks...) but also with html5 videos (there is an option in youtube to turn that on). However if I succeed to have the direct URL, these videos play perfecrtlky fine in mplayer using not more than 10-20% of CPU time. Is there a solution to that? Is there any possibility to use an external player to play HTML5 videos in firefox? If anybody knows, Why this problem, are the mozilla folk aware of this problem? (Note that I posted a thread a long time ago for this problem but concerning flash only)

There's not much you can do to make HTML5 videos as fast as Xv, see http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/wiki/FAQ. They are slow for the same basic reason as Flash... the video overlay cannot be used because the standard allows for controls and CSS to be rendered on top of the video.
As for redirecting to an external player... this is not as easy as it could be. If the videos appeared in <embed> tags or <object> tags, one could use Mozplugger, Media Player Connectivity and other programs, but I don't think one has been written to handle the <video> tag. An upcoming update to firefox will make it use gstreamer, however. If this still results in slow playback, it will at least make it easier to use an external player. I imagine you would have to patch firefox to make it use a port on the localhost as the video sink instead of the screen. Then you would run gst-launch to receive that RTP stream.

• Firefox causes surge on MacBook CPU

hi:
this problem been going on for at least 3 months so it is cross version of Firefox as I've updated recently to 17.
after a while, I think it's 1.5-2hr if I've been surfing .. doing stuff on MacBook.. andcfirefox been open entire time
I hear the CPU do a surge and stay at it this higher CPU.
last night I worked out it was purely Firefox. I closed Firefox down and within 1-2min.. CPU was back to normal. no heavy sound of processing
my MacBook Pro is only 1 year old. so it's app issue not hardware.
last night I retested this three times
first time / only Firefox open
second time / Firefox and Opera
third time / Firefox / opera and mail
all three times when closed Firefox CPU went back to normal.
tonight I will turn off all addons to double check they are not cause. I think I've did that and still CPU usage surge. but will double check to be absolutely sure.
Firefox I use extensively
I have
1 one window with 15 tabs for stuff I'm researching and currently working on
each tab is simple site eg amazon book page
2 another window with my ACTION tabs. typically 4-5 open
"so my question is"
1 what is suggested troubleshoot steps to work out which part of the Firefox solution is causing my CPU usage
2 what are common things to check with CPU surges?
thankyou in advance

many thanks
for quick glance - i have none of the "baddies"
will go thru article very methodically...
i notice the CPU goes up to 500 regularly.
today i ha activity monitor showing to see how often it surged
5 times in 1 day

When I try to update Firefox it repeatedly says Firefox must be closed to proceed with install even tho Firefox is closed. I get the same message when I try to uninstall the existing version of Firefox. How do I close Firefox??? The same thing happens when I try to update other programs. When a program is off what else do I have to do to turn it off??

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or have other problems with updating to update then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

* Install the new version that you have downloaded

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Alright, well what I recommend doing is a fresh install of Firefox.
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:

• Firefox will not display on the screen even though with Process Explorer I see Firefox.exe active but no CPU usage

I use Firefox v10.0.2 as default browser on Dell XPS8300 e/w Intel Core i5 & Windows 7 Ultimate and Compaq Presario CQ57 e/w Intel Core i3 & Windows 7 Home. More frequently on the (about 90% of attempts) than the Dell (50% of attempts) Firefox will not display to the screen when I click on icon. When it happens I cannot display other programs. I specifically say display because I believe Firefox has started. To circumvent the problem I installed Process Explorer on both machines and start this program first then click on Firefox icon. When problem occurs I can see Firefox.exe process in Process list; some CPU consumed but, then, no CPU activity. If I click on Firefox icon again another process opens in Process list but with same response - some CPU consumed and then no CPU activity. If I have 2 processes running and kill the 1st process, the 2nd will display and everything from then on is normal. If I do not open a 2nd process but kill the 1st process then click on Firefox icon Firefox is displayed and everything from then on is normal. This problem has occurred since original installation on both new machines. I've updated video drivers in both machines.

Ok, let's see if we can fix this and get it working for you!
First, if you start Firefox in safe mode (restart your computer first, then when you open Firefox, hold down the shift key) does it start up more reliably? This is usually caused by a faulty add-on. If it does help, then restart Firefox, go into the Firefox button, then add-ons, and disable your extensions one by one until you find the trouble maker.
Also, try updating to Firefox 11, it has several bug fixes that might make life easier here.
Just as a few basic troubleshooting steps to make sure we have all the bases covered,
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update all your plugins (Flash, Java, etc.): http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/.
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. you can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.

I follow standard instructions (update to lastest, disable plugins and extensions...) it do not work.
I not a configuration to reproduce the problem : keep iCloud mail open in one tab is the way to reproduce the problem sometime after a few minutes, sometime after some hours : but it also happend sometime with no iCloud open...

It doesn't help, has i said : i allready do standard procédure to help (what you point) : update to lastest, disable extension or theme (i do not use), disable plug-ins... nothing helps, the bug is still there.

• X overload my cpu

/usr/bin/X -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/run/xauth/A:0-3Wj8Pl   95% CPU  6.3% mem  time 8h
After some hours this process overload my cpus. I can do ctrl+alt+f[1-6] but X is frozen.

Right now, I see that even previous version (Pages '09) have a problem with eating process too.
So I guess that I have too many fonts. Since I have installed a bunch of fonts.
I have removed 2 critical font problems but pages still eating process.
BUT I have validate fonts and I have about 300 fonts with minor issue.
This could be a problem with pages but not sure why other app has no problem with this at all.
So now I am renaming them to fix the issue each font then will see if problem solve.

• Mozilla Firefox crashes repeatedly in ubuntu 12.04 desktop version now what to do to solve this problem?

Mozilla Firefox 20.0 crashes repeatedly
I had tried by disabling cookies, addones uninstall & reinstall firefox completely
after that problem still exists.
at anytime it crashes. & we have to restart Firefox.

* It could be helpful if there is a diagnostic program/add-on which control all
installed add-ons.
* It could even be helpful If I can type/write more as 1500 characters in a
message, because I have to tell my story (Mozilla problems) and I want to
place the output of the 'terminal' (Sessionstore) in the same message.
* It even shall be helpful if there is a list (like in the early days of the Windows-
browser), where I can find the description and/or the solution of the Firefox- errors. My terminal give me p.e. this output : (firefox:10353): Gtk-CRITICAL
**: IA__gtk_clipboard_set_with_data: assertion `targets != NULL' failed;
Firefox: 10353 says me nothing, so..... there are errors enough, but the
crashes don't come from the browser. I have taken all steps, my last is to
re-install FF24 about:blank, vdpau.... e.s.o
* If I place a message here I can only put a picture-file, not a text or Gedit-file.

• When starting Firefox 3.6.11 the CPU goes to 100%.

After upgrading from 3.6.10 to 3.6.11 I'm unable to start Firefox in a reasonable period of time (3 minutes). The CPU goes to 100% for one of my 4 cores, when left to its own, the Firefox window appears after 18 minutes 43 seconds. My CPU is a Q6700 (Quad 2.66Ghz).

How can I go back to 3.6.10??

• Firefox using a lot of CPU (90%+ at times)

I am running firefox version 26.0 on a Macbook Pro OS X version 10.6.8 and I am running these extensions http://i.imgur.com/Co4NlGQ.png and http://i.imgur.com/Co4NlGQ.png . I am also using these plugins http://i.imgur.com/ZO55Lmq and http://i.imgur.com/IapcvJY and I have disabled all of the plugins, and that did not help as the CPU usage still fluctuated from about 10% usage all the way up to 100%.
I have checked to see if the plugins are up to date, and I updated one of them, but the newest Java Applet Plugin update only works with Maverick, which I do not have. Quicktime says that it's not up to date, but when I checked the software update on my Mac, it says that there are no updates available.
Image of the plugins that I checked to see if they were up to date http://i.imgur.com/fPuV8vD and http://i.imgur.com/7Uwp5vX and http://i.imgur.com/N0Cz9Tp aaand http://i.imgur.com/6FIwVTv .
Here is an image of my activity monitor (I had all plugins disabled here) http://i.imgur.com/j6xUudo . As you can see, the CPU usage is 99.6%, which is staggering considering I only opened a webpage (reddit) and was not running videos and the like. And here's an image of my activity monitor with more information http://imgur.com/zuY5iMu . The Real Mem can go all the way up the 2 GBs, which is a bit worrisome.
I have tried resetting Firefox, which didn't help, I have tried starting FF in safe mode, which didn't help, and I have even tried reinstalling FF, which didn't help. I also tried disabling "using hardware acceleration," restarted my computer, and the issue was not fixed. I used CCleaner to clear temporary files and the like, but it didn't do any good.
I really want to be able to use Firefox, because I'm starting to distrust Chrome, but if FF is using that much memory and CPU, I'm not sure I can continue using that browser.
I feel like I've hit dead ends on everything that I've tried, so I'm starting to give up hope. Does anyone help any idea or suggestion as to what I should try/ do?

I just realized that I just gave the information for the browser without the extensions that I had installed. Here's the accurate Troubleshooting Information with the extensions:
Hopefully that is of some help.
