Firefox is simply broken on mac os 10.4.11

I made what seems like the mistake of upgrading to firefox 3.6.8 and suddenly nothing worked, so I downgraded to 3.5.11 and found that everything that didn't work about 3.6.8 still didn't work.
I've been using firefox for years, but I'm getting frustrated.
Running OSX 10.4.11 on a G4 PPC powerbook
What happens:
Cannot navigate to a web page by typing in the address in the nav bar and hitting enter.
Preference menu appears blank
When trying to find updates for plugins, I'm told download is disabled, "click button to enable" I click the button, and get the same exact message again.
Links do not work
Google search function does not work
I tried downloading adobe flash 10.1 for mac using a different browser, and it didn't improve anything.

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Cmd+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
(You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
Firefox > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
If you open about:crashes, you should get links to online crash reports. You could post some of the crash IDs for review by volunteers here.
Given the timing, another issue might be some ads or media in the page. There are some add-ons to block such things...

  • Web based admin pages broken on Mac?

    Have new WRT54GL v 1.1, 4.30.7 firmware.
I have noticed intermittent problems with the web-based admin pages, using both Firefox and Safari on the Mac. Odd bit is these don't happen all the time and I'm not sure yet what triggers the problems.
Most commonly seen in Firefox: On the page for basic wireless settings, drop-down menu for selecting the channel will not work. It will display the currently selected channel, but clicking on the menu will either not drop down at all, or it will drop down briefly with no channel selections visible.
In Safari: Many of the drop-down titles and item will shows the intended text prefixed with the word "Capture" or bracketed in "Capture(itemName)." I've seen a few variations on this. Also, many item titles and text are simply missing from many of the pages when viewed in Safari.
    Questions (some rhetorical, some practical):
    * Anybody else seen these or similar problems?
    * Known solutions/work-arounds?
    * Does this happen with any browsers on the PC?
    * Is there something fundamentally wrong with how WRT54GL's scripting builds these user interface items - or is the problem more related to how the Mac browser handles the rendering?
    -Lee

I don't have any problems with this firmware on my WRT54Gv2 using MacOS or Windows and any browser I have.
Those problems are usually either cache problems, i.e. there are some incomplete files in the browser cache.
Could be disabled JavaScript. (It is worth to check the JavaScript error log to see if there is problem)
Could be a hardware/memory problem. Sometimes this happens after a firmware upgrade which did not correctly go through. A re-flash of the same firmware could help then.
The Safari texts you see are normal. There JavaScript works a little different. I have the same on mine. (but I must admit I cannot tell you if I can configure the router with Safari as I have never tried it so far. I usually use only Firefox.)
You can try a PC and see if it is the same there. I guess it is.
Anyway, you are not alone with this problem. I would try to clear the cache, if that makes no difference, download the 4.30.7 firmware and re-flash the router. If that still makes no difference return it to the store if you can and get a replacement. You could ask them to hook it up there to a computer to see if it is any better there...

  • I Can't install Firefox Sync on Firefox 25.0.1 for Mac, which I need to use Firefox on iphone.

When I tried to install Firefox sync it said it was not compatible with firefox 25.0.1.
Mac 10.6.8 is the most my system can handle.
I have an iphone 4 running iOS 7.0.3.
I want to use firefox on my iphone and believe i need to install Firefox Sync to accomplish this. Is there anyway where i can run firefox on my iphone?
Syncing between the Mac and the iphone would be good but is not essential.

This is disappointing, but thank you very much for your time. This will save me many hours of frustration.

  • After updating to Firefox 4.0.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.4 there is no longer an "Bookmarks Organize Bookmarks" option. Did it move?

I updated to Firefox 4.0.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.4. When I go to the "Bookmarks" drop down menu, there is no "Organize Bookmarks" command. How do I do the operations that were under that command such as add new folders, move bookmarks, export bookmarks, etc.?

"Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu.

    Just once or twice

It turns out that the problem had to do with network accounts, even though it was not clear at first.  Redirecting the program to the local machine's cache with a network home redirector script fixed the issue.  Thanks anyway.

  • History, bookmarks and navigation have stopped working in firefox 3.6.8 for mac

    Firefox 3.6.8; Mac OS 10.5.8
The history function doesn't record anything; all my bookmarks are gone; I can't make any new bookmarks either. I tried safe mode, nothing changed. My forward/back arrows go away some times too. I tried reinstalling firefox and repairing permissions. I found the bookmarks file but it is the default one - not mine. Even the default firefox bookmarks won't show up! What is the problem?

You need to use the command line switch -safe-mode in the Terminal to start Firefox 3.6 versions in Safe Mode.

  • How can I check to see if my iPad 3 is simply broken?

Before I abandon my iPad 3 for a Samsung, is there a way I can check if the unit is simply broken of if all my problems are a result of the recent updates? I've sone the Reset to Defaults already without success. My device is simply unuseable, primarily with Safari. I repeatedly freezes up, the screen goes blank, and/or I get the repeated error "There was a problem with the webpage...". Also, on message forums, I'll get random pictures from other threads as peoples avatars. The device just isn't stable and I've reahed the end. If I do switch, my sister want my iPad or I coukd sell it. I definitely don't want to go that route if its broken. So, can I go to an Apple store and have it checked? Can they actually tell by running some type of diagnostics? Are they going to charge me? Thanks in advance.

Yes, I think that Apple can diagnose the iPad for you and tell you if it is salvageable.  They have more sophisticated means of doing diagnostics than us every day users have.
No, I do not that there is a cost involved, but you need to make an appointment at an Apple Store before you go in, and the procedure has changed for that. Read this for the instructions as to how you can book an appointment.

  • Firefox (latest versions) on both Mac 10.6 and Windows 7 show "this Connection is Untrusted" on my bank site

This started for me 1/17/2011 on the savingsbank.com website:
Firefox (latest versions) on both Mac 10.6 and Windows 7 show "this Connection is Untrusted" on my bank site https://www.savingsbank.com
NO other browsers - Explorer, Chrome, Safari - give this error box on this site. Please advise if this has to do with the bank site? or Firefox compatibility.
Saw in a forum someone else having this problem and they were told it had to do with their Date and time being off?? I've been on several computers, all with the correct date and time and they've all shown this Insecure Certificate statement on my bank site with Firefox and no other browser.

I've looked at the banking site with IE8 and it does NOT show me that "This connection is Untrusted" window. (please see attached screen shot of viewing the site with IE8) It opens fine and has "Identified by Network Solutions" showing on the address bar as it always does.
The latest version of Opera (not earlier ones) does show a problem with the website's security certificate.
We've contacted the bank about this, and they say there's no problem with their certificate but are looking into it.
My question remains, why only Firefox and one version of Opera claim this and NO other browser?

  • Using Firefox 3.6.20 with Mac OS 10.4.11. It takes Firefox about 60 seconds to open window. Can you help?

I am using Firefox 3.6.20 on Mac with OS 10.4.11. It takes about 60 seconds for browser window to open. I did not have this problem with previous version of Firefox. Help!!!

This is so frustrating. I said in my original message that I do NOT want to supposedly "update" my OS to 10.5 or more. I have seen those versions and DON'T like them. They louse up iMovie & are more cumbersome. I am not interested in layers of networking, games, and being tangled up with an insecure "cloud." The iTunes set up is already obnoxious enough, when you try to manage, organize & back up your music.
I do not like how the computer/phone/etc. high tech world take away our choices, forcing us to up grade to stuff we don't want, frequently at a higher cost.
I am not the only one who wants to stick with the better Mac OS system. If this answer is actually from Firefox, then I am disappointed in FireFox. I really appreciated the security of using Firefox to connect to the internet.

  • How do I get and install an older version of Firefox to run on my Mac 10.4.11?? I mistakenly installed a new version that overrode my older version which isn't suitable for my Mac.

We get a message that says "You cannot use the application 'Firefox.app' with this version of Mac OS X.

    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4+ versions, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />

  • Are these suggestions speficic to the Windows version of Firefox? Because on my Mac version (31.0) there is no "options" in the Tool menu

Are these suggestions speficic to the Windows version of Firefox? Because on my Mac version (31.0) there is no "options" in the Tool menu.
I'm trying to figure out why Firefox has no spellcheck. I suspect it needs dictionaries installed, but it's a bit of a mystery. I had to reste FF as it kept crashing after I updated to V31.0

    Yes Options is for Windows.
On Mac you use "Firefox > Preferences" or the Preferences button in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list.
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.
*Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
*Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
You can look here for dictionaries:
Were you able to stop the crashes?

Assuming you are running OS X 10.6.6 or later (10.7.x Lion, 10.8.x Mountain Lion or 10.9.x Mavericks), go to the Apple Menu (top left-hand corner of the screen)>App Store and it should become clear from there.
