Firefox isn't opening anything.

I keep getting this message:
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.facebook.com.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I've restarted my internet, restarted my computer and checked my firewall settings to make sure that firefox was being allowed and it still won't work.

Try removing Firefox from the rules list to force the firewall to re-create the rule. For some other things to check see [[Firefox cannot load websites but other programs can]]

  • Mac won't open pages in browsers. Chrome and Firefox won't open any pages - Safari will only open a selected few.

I've had some strange browser issues, with Conduit being added to Chrome (which I've tried to remove via the browser settings). Chrome will open my Gmail account but no ther pages. Firefox won't open anything. Safari opens a few pages (this forum thankfully) but is very selective.
Google is returning results to me via Google.es rather than Google.co.uk
I can use all browsers freely on other devices on home network (although Google.es has popped up on my iPhone now). I've run anti-virus software which hasn't picked up any problems. I've tried uninstalling Chrome and Firefox, but am unable to do so.
Any help or guidance would be really, really appreciated.

    Hi,
First of all click Safari/Reset Safari, next click Safari/Preferences/Extensions and turn off extensions. The re-test
If the problem persists, try using safari in safe mode:
Use this link to see how to do this:

If Safari works ok in safe mode, then your problem points to something 3rd party related.

  • Firefox will not open any webpage - including google, youtube and firefox help.

Firefox won't open anything. This includes support.mozilla.com - I am currently using my back-up browser, Internet Explorer.
Firefox is enabled to access the internet, and browser cookies are not blocked.
All it says every time I try to open any webpage is 'Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at [address of site].' and 'Unable to connect.'

After upgrading, sometimes your firewall will not recognize the new Firefox version and, therefore, not allow it to access the internet. To remedy that situation,
#you must remove Firefox from your firewall's allowed applications list,
#then restart firefox, go to a website, the firewall will detect the new Firefox version and
#then give the necessary permissions for your firewall to allow Firefox access to the internet

  • All of a sudded, my firefox browser isnt allowing my to click links and open pages, or open anything on the top area of the screen.

All of a sudded, my firefox browser isnt allowing my to click links and open pages, or open anything on the top area of the screen. For example i go to my email and i cant click on inbox, send, create, folders, mark as unread. It is like this on every website?? Its really annoying i cant do anything becasue most sites have login at the top of the screen and i cant login to anything.

That problem can be caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links in that part of the screen not clickable.

  • I close out Firefox and a sign still comes up saying it's open and won't let me open anything else. In task manager it is not open even when the sign says so.

The task manager does not show that a Firefox window is open but it will not let me do anything more until I shut down my computer. It's a real hassle to have to do that so often and wait for everything to load again and again

    Hi,
This may mean the Task Manager is "lying" and could indicate a OS malware issue. These dedicated security forums would be helpful:

  • I close out firfox then I cannot open anything without a warning saying firefox still running??

I open firefox, I check my e mail, then I close the program. I then cannot open anything as I get a warning that firefox is still running and I must restart windows. I have tried re loading firefox to no avail. What is wrong?

  • Having major problem cannot use my arrow to open anything on page only about 2 in down from browser will it work I have installed and uninstalled firefox

arrow does not open anything 2 in. below the toolbar works fine below that I've installed and uninstalled Firefox several times will not work using Firefox11 very hard to access a lot of things especially when ordering online cannot submit any info required

Recently, the Yahoo Toolbar and the Babylon extension have been reported to cause that problem. They seem to overlap invisibly over the top of the web page display. If you have either or both, uninstall or disable them/it, or see if an update is available that solves the problem.

  • Firefox was not running smoothly, so I unistalled it and any every folder that had anything to do with Firefox or Mozilla, then reinstalled the newest version and now it says that it cannot open because "a copy of firefox is already open." What now?

I am running Mac OSX 10.5 and have never had issues with firefox. Then I noticed it starting to run much slower and having issues freezing, yet if I used safari there were no problems. I decided to uninstall firefox and all of the folders that go along with it to get a clean restart with a new download. Everything seemed to download fine, but when I attempt to open firefox it just opens a warning that says "a copy of firefox is already open" and my only option is to close the program. Yes, I have quit ALL applications and even restarted the computer to make sure nothing is running first.
This may be completely unrelated, but another issue nonetheless, shortly before I started having issues with firefox, it no longer would go to the hotmail login page to check my email. I didn't change any settings, but it would not load that webpage even though every other page works fine. I know it is not a problem with the hotmail site because every other computer in my home will go to the site and login, plus I can get into my email by going to MSN and logging in from there.

Make sure that you haven't left a profiles.ini file.

  • When I attempt to open Firefox a window appears which says Firefox is already running, and I must either close the window (which isn't open) or re-start the computer to get Firefox to open.

The system operates normally for a while and then unexpectedly whenever it wants to, I get this message, even though Firefox is not open.
I have to continually re-start the computer to make Firefox operational again.

See [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]], in your case it sounds like Firefox is not closing properly.

  • Whenever I try to open firefox, I get this message, "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." I have the latest version, and do not have anything else opened. How can I fix this?

I cannot get my firefox application to open and it is not offering me any options for troubleshooting.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

  • Firefox won't open when I click on the icon. I've tried uninstalling so that I can reinstall, but it says I have to close firefox (which isn't open), so I'm stuck.

The problem: Firefox won't open when I click on the program.
Solutions tried: #1) I tried to uninstall the program so that I can download it again, but the screen shows the message "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation". However, firefox is not open.
#2) I tried to download firefox, thinking that possibly it would update and solve the problem. However, I get the same error message that "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation" Problem is that firefox is not open.
I've done a screen shot, so you can see that I do not have the firefox browser open.

Thanks for the reply. I tried repairing the permissions (as well as several other things like deleting the Finder preferences file), but no dice.
Given that the problem cropped up right after updating OS X on two separate machines, it's looking to me like it's just a bug that needs squashing at this point.
