Firefox isn't saving my tabs

I need to start off with the warning that I have no clue what I'm doing and the work I've done so far was based on other people's advice or information I found on MozillaZine. This problem started after I downloaded the latest version of Firefox.
So... Firefox isn't saving my tabs and I think I know why, but I'm not 100% sure. (I have it saved that I want to restore my previous session whenever I open Firefox.) I went to about:config and went to look for browser.sessionstore.enabled to see if that was messed up, but the file wasn't even there. Obviously, I'm assuming that's the problem. If anyone could tell me if it sounds like I'm on the right track that would be great.

The pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.enabled browser.sessionstore.enabled] is no longer used in Firefox 3.5 and later (bug 449596).
Remove that pref if you still have it via the right-click context menu and choose Reset.
Check that Session Restore is enabled.
You can look at the 'browser.sessionstore' prefs on the '''about:config''' page and reset prefs that show as bold (user set).

If you use [[Clear Recent History]] in Firefox 3.5/6 or [[Clearing private data|Clear Private Data]] in Firefox 3 to clear the 'Browsing History' when Firefox is closed then restoring tabs from the last session (e.g. "Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

Firefox isn't saving my history. I'm not in private browsing mode and remember history is selected under the privacy settings. This only started after I updated to the latest version. All pre-update history is lost, too.

  • Firefox is not saving my tabs when Firefox starts back up after shutdown -- what can I do to fix this???

Ever since I updated to the latest Firefox 3.6.12 a several weeks ago I began to have this problem. Under 'Options' and 'Start Up' I have highlighted - when Firefox starts " Show my Windows & Tabs from last time". My settings have never changed since this last update to the latest version so I don't know why I am experiencing this problem. I will say that I did recently do a Windows Reinstall on my computer (Window XP - SP3) but this didn't start to become a problem until the latest Firefox update a week or two later so I doubt this may have something to do with the problem.
After looking on the forums for solutions to this problem I came across one thread, which said that this can be a problem with the file sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder and then said what to do to find and delete these type of existing files. Well, I followed the instructions on how to do so and yet Firefox still doesn't always save my Tabs upon computer shutdown. I'd say 2 out of 3 times I do a restart or shutdown it saves my Tabs but 1 out of 3, it does not. By the way, I thought I'd also mention that this exact problem is happening on two of my computers both running Version 3.6.12.
So what gives?...could it be problems with the latest Version 3.6.12 causing this since that's when this problem started occurring? What else can I do to troubleshoot and finally fix this? ...it has become very frustrating since I keep a lot of open tabs before closing Firefox and never know when it's not gonna save!!!

Make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

  • Firefox is not saving open tabs when closing, it says other session of Firefox is running but this is not the case.

Firefox used to save open tabs when closing the browser. This no longer happens and Firefox says other session running. Task Manager shows that this is not the case.
Recently installed an flv/mpeg viewer "aLot" which placed a toolbar in Firefox.
Am running Firefox 3.0.5 on Windows XP with Service Pack 3.

Your useragent says your are running Firefox 3.6.13 -> is that true.
If not, do the following and post back your new Firefox version:
    * Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter
    * If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.
    * Filter = general.useragent.
    * Right-click the preferences that are bold, one line at a time, and select Reset.
    * Then restart Firefox

  • Why can I no longer close down Firefox while saving existing tabs?

For some freason, I don't know what, but 2 things are going wrong.
    1. I cannot log in to an already registerd account with the same name an my [email protected] email address
    2. Why can I no longer close down Firefox while still saving existing tabs.
If this reaches a person rather than a machine, I would really appreciate a reply to the aol address as I don't tend to use hotmail that much

In Firefox 3.5 and later you can no longer click the Tab bar to set focus to it.<br />
You can press Ctrl+K (Mac: Cmd+K) to set focus to the search bar and press the Tab key until the tab bar gets focus.

  • Tabs: previous versions allowed for saving all tabs in a bookmark folder. The new tab groups do not behave this way. How can I save permanent set of tabs as a group that is available later, like the folder of bookmars was?

tabs: previous versions of firefox allowed for saving all tabs with a group name, so you could open them all again later at your convenience. The new firefox 4.0.1 has a new tab feature, but the tab groups do not seem to persist once you shut down, and are not saved as a folder in your bookmarks. What am I missing? How can I do what I want (save permanent set of tabs as a group that is available later, like the folder of bookmarks was)? Thanks

Right click one of the tabs, the "Bookmark all tabs..." option.
Does it do what you want?

  • Firefox keeps saving my tabs from several months ago - the same tabs! Even though I close them, the next time I restart, there they are. I was using a previous version of FF, now upgraded to 6 and same thing is happening.

Thanks for the reply. I never get the option to "Restore Previous History" from History. I don't even have the box checked that asks to delete the history when Firefox closes. I don't know what's wrong, no matter what, I always lose everything. I have the box marked "Show my windows and tabs from last time" for when I open Firefox, but it never shows that, just my homepage. Also, when I check my History, it only shows the pages that I opened since I started Firefox, nothing from before. Even if I were to open up 10 pages now, close Firefox, and open it, the history would only show the homepage that opened this time, not any of the 10 pages that I opened 5 minutes ago.

  • On starting Firefox all my 'Group My Tabs' are gone. Can I recover?

I had started to use the 'Group My Tabs' button and had perhaps 50 pages over 8 groups arranged.
I always shutdown FF using FILE|EXIT but today starting firefox showed none of my tabs (remembered from last session) and all my TAB GROUPS were gone.
I had not bookmarked these url's, relying instead on the Tab Group feature - I would like to try and recover the urls.
I have searched and made copies of 'sessionstore.js & sessionstore.bak' hoping that these files may allow recovery.

Thanks, Yes I have FF configured to restore tabs from last time. I can live with the loss of the active tabs but the 'Tab Groups' I had saved are rather more precious. I have explored history but it was configured save no older than a couple of days so the important stuff isn't there.
I'm new to this and have run data recovery software to recover any sessionstore.* (.js/.bak) files other than those already in the single profile folder. No clue what I should be doing!
Where are urls from the 'Group My Tabs' saved?

  • When closing multiple tabs, is there any way to get back the option of saving those tabs OR NOT for your next session, within the warning dialogue box itself?

For brief period of time, not in FF4, there was the option whereby when I closed multiple tabs, a firefox dialogue box opened warning me that I'm about to close multiple tabs, '''AND ALSO''' asking me if wanted to save those tabs for my next session, or trash them.
The primary issue IS NOT about saving tabs. The primary question here is about getting THE OPTION back to the CLOSING MULTIPLE TABS WARNING DIALOGUE.
The use case here should be obvious. However, since it is clearly not obvious that different people work in a variety of ways, and neither of those methods of working is "wrong" or "right" I will elaborate: Some people, for whatever reason, it doesn't matter why, want to save all their tabs on some occasions, and on other occasions don't.
This preference varies throughout the day. Therefore it is inefficient to constantly go to preferences and change whether or not I want firefox to open all my tabs from my last session. It is more LOGICAL to place an option in the multiple tab warning dialogue as well, for people whose preference constantly changes.
This option was available for a time in most of the Firefox 3 versions. Is there any way to get back this option in Firefox 4?

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no need for asking if you want to save the current session.
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
You can set the warn prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page to <b>true</b> via the right-click context menu or toggle the value with a double left-click.

To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

  • I opened my computer and the whole top only shows web search, I can not find my bookmarks and I tried reloading firefox and still nothing but tab bar

    Question
I opened my computer and the whole top only shows web search, I can not find my bookmarks and I tried reloading firefox and still nothing but tab bar. Tried f10, alt, nothing! Can I reload an old firefox? There is no firefox logo at top. When I rt click at top I see hide toolbar and leave full screen. To the right there is only a home sign. How can I get my BOOKMARKS ??????? I so need them and hate what ever this is that now shows up on firefox.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • Where does Firefox 3.6.10 store tab and history?

I am running Firefox 3.6.10 under Windows XP, the latter fully updated. However, I keep my Firefox profile on a D: drive, so that it is unaffected by an operating system reinstall or other modification affecting the C: drive.
I have recently suffered several Firefox crashes, most seemingly caused by Firefox or add-on updates (I have now disabled automatic updates for everything). But the most recent crash was caused by my laptop's battery expiring. In all these cases restarting Firefox produced a "welcome" startup screen (my personal settings in Options specify a blank screen), and the loss of both saved tabs and history.
After trying various ideas to recover the lost data, to no avail, I resorted to restoring the whole of my C: drive (using 3rd party software, not Windows's lousy backup facility). On then starting Firefox, lo and behold! the tabs and history were restored to the situation at the latest backup date.
My understanding is that tabs and history data used to be stored in the Profiles\sessionstore.js and Profiles\places.sqlite locations respectively. Interestingly, while it is asserted that Profiles\places.sqlite contains both history and bookmarks data, although I lose the history, I do not lose the bookmarks!
When I end a Firefox session, saving the modified tabs configuration, and any modifiied bookmarks, I find that the sizes and dates of the Profiles\sessionstore.js and Profiles\places.sqlite are unchanged. Yet when I restart Firefox the updated tabs and history are recovered!
From all of the above, I conclude that, at least for me, Firefox has stopped saving tabs and history data in the Profile folder, and instead has started saving it somewhere else on the C: drive. This is, of course, most unsatisfactory, as my whole purpose in putting the Profile folder on the D: drive was to prevent it from being corrupted by the vagaries of Windows. So, can anybody enlighten me as to what may be happening in my case, and how I might be able to recover the lost information without the drastic remedy of restoration of the whole C: drive from a backup facility (which is too disk space-consuming to deploy more than monthly)?
(By the way, I am aware of the facility to save the tabs under Bookmarks, but that is not a satisfactory solution; and anyway, the history issue remains unresolved.)
Hoping some wise person can help,
    Brian Binder

You can use this to find the location of the Firefox Profile Folder
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
The size of place.sqlite doesn't change if items are added or removed unless there is no empty space to add new items.<br />
The size of sessionstore.js should change, but you may not notice it if you only see a size in KB and not in bytes.
If places.sqlite is missing then Firefox will try to restore the bookmarks from a .JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
