Firefox keep eating my CPU

FF 3 had this problem FF4 has it too... I hardly use add ons, have disabled Flash but every once in a while for no apparent reason CPU goes to 90, heck even 100%... the only way out is to stop FF, use ALT CTR DEL to stop the program and start a complete new session. This is a problem regardless how many tabs are open, regardless whatever website is open. It happens with one TAB, with many TABS, and worst... it can never be solved by just waiting until FF has finished with whatever it does. WHY WHY WHY...

# Does it happen in [[Safe mode]]?
# If yes, see [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
# If not 2., it may be caused by HW acceleration. You can have graphic info in about:support, graphic section at the end to see if HW acceleration is enabled and if your graphic driver is old.
# Try to update your graphic driver from your computer manufacturer support site.
# If not fixed by 4., disable HW acceleration in Options > Advanced > General.

  • Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff!

Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up real fast and carries on going till it uses up all there is left. Most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff but not just neccessarily then! I find out it's happened when there's been an update after i restart and an extra webpage comes up with the particular addon/plugin/ff update. I have to restart most of time because nothing sorts it out. I'm using windows xp with the latest update of ff 13.0.1 it's not this version because it's been happening for a while. And it never started when i added a particular addon or plugin or when i added a new app to my pc either. Any idea as to what this may be or how i'd sort it out?
    Cheers

Maybe disable hardware acceleration? This article should help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram

  • Firefox/plug-in container eats all cpu and ram only flash plug-in installed no theme new profile new windows install still can't fix

I've been through hundreds of posts in the last year. back then all of a bloody sudden firefox starts eating my computer. 500+mb of use ram during normal browsing.
Decent cpu use at around 25% but if i turn on youtube it hits 80% for about 6 mins then it's 97% to 100% and it's always in constant motion between those 4 values.
playing any game which uses flash or java quickly become unplayable and I've seen it hit 1gb+ ram use.
turning off flash protected fixed youtube but it's unsafe so need a different fix. and I'm out of ideas for everything else. I.E same problem, chrome is even worse than FF, and opera won't even run. so what do i do now

    1. it's wrong I have the current version 12. something.
    2. just firefox not even counting the plug-in container.
    3. the laptop is old almost 4 years, 1.93 GB of ram, only antivirus begins at start up, linux is something I'd rather not mess with a couple stupid people use my computer, and i have an intel celeron 900 2.20 GHz single core.
you sounded condescending careful it's far more telling than you realize.

  • Once closed, Firefox keeps running in the background and ties up 50% of my CPU at 112mb of memory. WHY?

firefox keeps running in background after closing, ties up 50% of CPU and 112mb of ram. why?

Just keep following the suggested solution until you die.

  • Firefox keeps redrawing images

I have spotted a performance issue which seemed awfully odd at the beginning.
On this page at least :
    http://designshack.net/articles/graphics/design-a-rockin-band-website
The page was obviously idle, the blinking ads were disabled with AdBlock. However, the CPU usage remains constant and high (22-35% with xorg-ati drivers, 45-56% CPU with amd proprietary drivers, Radeon 7290 and AMD C70), and is worse when there are images in the viewport.
Enabling the repainted areas highlight showed me that every image in the page was constantly redrawn (the full area). I found out that the DOM elements have a .gif background-image (a typical AJAX spinner set with CSS).
That is, even if I can't see the animation, Firefox keeps redrawing the entire container and hogs CPU. I don't know what Chrome does, but it correctly considers the area as not to be repainted, and saves CPU.
Obviously visiting about:config and setting animation_mode to none sort of fixes the problem. But it's not a real solution. Have I missed something ? Does everyone have the same problem ?

Tested in safe mode (had to reset the animation_mode setting too), and the images in the article content (those with background-image set to a .gif) are constantly repainted again.
This behaviour has been consistently reproduced on Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10, on four computers (with AMD, Intel and NVidia chips)

  • ITunes eats up CPU

My iTunes eats up CPU (95%-142%) while converting from MP3 to AAC!?
18 tracks (134 MB) is not to much I assume!
Fans on my MacBook Pro 17" are working non-stop (at 5800-6000 min.Speed) during this "operation"!
Is there a particular reason or there is something wrong with my laptop?

Yeah same problem here. The only thing I've been able to do to deal with the problem is to close out of mozilla firefox (or any other larger program), and it usually improves... kind of a pain.

  • MassStorage process eats my cpu

    Hi,
since i installed 10.4.8, my system has been behaving in a strange way. Iphoto now recognizes my firewire mass storage (160 gb hard disk on an enclosure) unit as a camera... and i notice that the MassStorage process (as i see it in activity monitor) get to use 30% or 50% of Cpu (intel imac 17 inch), until it gets stuck "not responding" and it goes up to 80%. After i kill the process, everything goes back to normal. The thing is, i use the storage devide very much, and even when the system starts i see it eating my cpu.
how can i resolve this? is there any known workaround? i dont think it is a normal behaviour, its been happening since yesterday.
    Thanks in advance.
    Alberto Rojas

Ok, so spotlight indexed my hard drive again, and i let massstorage to finish its work. I know the process is directly related to the indexing process, but i cant make it stop. The indexing setting is set to off (through terminal) but it keeps working everytime i restart, even in the admin account in my mac, and even after the process is finished. There has to be a workaround, im still looking around for answers.
thank you very much for your help.
    Alberto.

  • Disconnected users eating 25% CPU time

    Hi,
Some times my wife stay logged in on our common computer (she wants keep open her files). When I log in her account is disconnected. If I do not so any think on the computer the CPU load is about 25%. I checked the task manager, my wife's disconnected account
eating this CPU time. I checked the process, it is "Windows Logon User Interface Host".
I have 4 core CPU. It seems there is thread in the "Windows Logon User Interface Host" which is in an infinite loop. I am using Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.
It would be nice, if a Windows service does not eat CPU time just for nothing.
    Best Regards.
    László Nemesszeghy

    Hi,
Do you use remote desktop connection? sometime, a incompatible 3 party remote desktop application can cause a high logonui.exe cpu usage.
And software like A-Tuning can also cause this issue, if you have this softwware installed, I suggest you uninstall them, then test again.

  • Firefox keeps freezing with new tab even in safe mode

Firefox keeps freezing, so there's no chance of even a crash report, I can only get out via TaskManager/End process. I usually have dict and thesaurus open while writing, usually with second tab my browser is a still.
It's very annoying as it's also stuck on my screen for a while so I can't continue to work.
I really need that to work or I have to switch to a different browser!
    Thank you.

  • When I want to mail a web-page or link firefox keeps opening new windows and cannot be stopped.

My laptop is a Samsung R730 (quite happy with it). I use Eudora for e-mailing. If I want to mail a web-page or link and click under 'file'to send it, Firefox starts opening new tabs without stopping up to over a hundred. I have to brutally switch off my lap-top, start agaiu. Restart Firefox which wants to open all the old tabs, click it off quickly. After that I can reopen to normal.

You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file if you get an "open with" dialog.

  • Had a website that my developers did some work on and made corrections . Firefox keeps bringing up this website.

Hello: I have a hosting reseller website at http://www.canyonsprings.ca that works great in chrome, explorer, but display a error on the front page, when I use firefox.
This error was corrected by the developers of the template. Why does firefox keep bringing up the wrong site.
I have uninstalled firefox completely off my computer, followed the troubleshooting steps I found on the forums and this not correct the problem.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Firefox keeps asking to install Flash. When I attempt this, I get an error message stating it failed. Flash works in Google Chrome, but not FF.

I don't know what happened but Firefox keeps asking me to install Flash. When I attempt to install the program, I get an error message that it has failed. There is no other information given and I'm just left hanging. I've tried this over twenty times with the same results. I've even uninstalled and re-installed Firefox, but this continues. I'm unable to watch any YouTube videos. I then installed Google Chrome and all is working fine. I can't stand the Google company though and really with I could continue using Firefox. Why is GC working for me any FF not? How can I fix this?

Google Chrome comes with its own Flash plugin, so doesn't require to install Flash separately.
You can find the latest Flash player versions for Firefox on this page.
You may have to run the Flash installer as Administrator (right-click: Run as Administrator) and make sure that Firefox and possibly other browsers are closed.

  • Firefox keeps freezing on startup, does not quit even from task manager but after 5-6 minutes.

Firefox keeps freezing at start up. Unfreezes after 5-6 minutes works for a while and then does the same till total crash.
Have tried everything. Uninstalled firefox and deleted all profiles from everywhere ( roaming and local in Appdata)
Disabled add ons , started in safe mode , with new profile.
Windows 7 64 ultimate, fully updated, Adobe also fully updated, all fully updated. Though I have noticed it does not recognize the Adobe flash 16 and says Adobe flash15 as an add on. Nowhere the adobe 15 exists though since it's entries also erased from the registry as well.
GHistory and cookies where cleaned multiple times. Checked for malaware but everything is clean. Started PC in safe mode and again the same crashing problem with firefox.
No other browser has problem. IceDragon also no problem and works fine.Neither the Chrome type browsers have any problem.
any help excluding to eraze my Windows and reinstall all the programs again. Not possible to take this risk for just a browser.
    Thank in advance.
