Firefox keeps "Not Responding" and freezing my computer

As of late, my Firefox browser has been freezing my entire computer. It keeps saying that it is "not responding", my mouse turns into that blue circular loading screen, I can't exit anything, I can't even open task manager, I have to take the battery out just for my computer to turn off.
I scanned everything with Norton; didn't detect anything. I even did the Norton Power Eraser, still nothing. I set Firefox to run the program as an administrator and I thought it was fixed but it wasn't.
I even update my plug-ins and for some reason, your website keeps telling me I need to update the same ones, so I can't even rely on that.
I noticed that it does happen when I'm on a Youtube page. Like when I've paused a video.
It opens fast, it browses fast, it goes to certain websites fast. It's this annoyance that has really bothered me and has considered me switching to Google Chrome.
If you don't want me to, then tell me how to fix this issue.

I am having the same problem... it seems isolated to the version I was running at the time which was V21.0.
Less than a week ago it just hung/froze my system completely for no reason..no keyboard no mouse no luck...
I am running Windows 7 Enterprise x64 Bit and runs well with no other issues.. here's what I tried...
Uninstalled Firefox completely including all personal data, caches, etc, then I downloaded a fresh copy from mozilla.org (V21.0) and installed it.
Now I have the same issue!
Chrome runs perfectly as does Internet Explorer, so does any one have any ideas as to what changed in this version that would cause such a condition to occur?

The programme keeps ‘not responding’ and I am unable to view options as the programme keeps freezing.
I am unable to use Firefox on many sites as it keeps not responding. Every time I click tools and then options the programme freezes. I have tried starting in safe mode still did not work I have re-installed Firefox and that has not worked. I have not used ‘Explorer’ for at least 10 years but I may have to change soon as I am unable to work with Firefox at present.

Spent about 4 hours yesterday trying to figure out why bookmarks is behaving so poorly with such a slow response. The response time is directly related to the number of bookmarks in each folder. It takes 8 seconds to process a bookmark. The 8 seconds occur between an sqlite shm unlock and the next sqlite lock.
At the start, the first and 3rd systems were behaving OK, the 2nd system was responding poorly. Did all the usual basic, restarted FF, rebooted system, etc.
THEEEENNNNN--the 3rd system started acting up. Tried tracing, etc. -- didn't see anything specific. Messed around with systems 2 and 3 and ,THEEENNNN, the both started working OK!
'''And about a minute later, the first system crapped out! '''
Screwed around another 1/2 hour and THEEEENNNN, all 3 systems started working OK. Cannot recreate the problem and I don't have a clue as to what I did to correct the problem!
All 3 systems are on the same internal network--192.168...... This leads me to believe that there is some kind of cross communications between systems. I do have Sync turned off, so I don't think that's the problem. But what.....????

  • Firefox keeps not responding on all sites

firefox keeps not responding on all sites , even when i scroll up and down. it's been going on for 2 weeks now. can they fix this

Firefox & Java, Firefox & Flash Player, Firefox & Plugins, Firefox & The rest of the world... When will these problems end?!

  • Firefox keeps (not responding) how do I fix it?

Firefox keeps (not responding) was using 6.0 and saw online that someone switched back to 5.0 so I tried that, still not working. Also saw on your help page that other people are having this problem. Any solutions?

You're not the only one. Despite other comments, it's not a RAM issue. I have been having the problem for a week. I sent numerous complaints to Facebook, but their IT staff is either poorly trained or grossly understaffed, because nothing gets done, and you never get a response.
My home page loads, and that's it. I've tried it on three computers in my home, and in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and get the same result in all three, as well as on my other computers.
I hope they will eventually resolve the issue, but it's MADDENING. I got my Facebook access back on Thursday night, and it worked for the weekend, but I lost it this morning again.

  • Firefox keeps not responding.also chrome and internet explorer dhas the sma problem

fire fox keeps not responding.I have the same problem with internet explorer and chrome.I have spent a fortine on pc systems repair but they have not cured the problem.I operate windows vista.my desk topis a Dell dimension c 521 IT IS 3 YEARS OLD.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox keeps hanging up and freezing. I get this message. "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing--what a mess.

No matter how many times I open and close, firefox hangs up after surfing a few pages. When I look at task master, firefox is using up hundreds of thousands of kb, causing the processor to stall at 100%. I do not have this problem when surfing with IE. I have the latest version of firefox. I never had this problem with version 5. It keeps getting worse with each "update".

See [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]]
Obviously firefox should not hang after surfing a few pages. I have Firefox installed on an XP including firefox 6.0.2 and do not have problems.

Have a read of the above linked articles. The first thing to do is to try to get firefox to behave more normally

#* but do not make changes when you have the window with a list of options just click continue
    # if using safe mode does not solve the problem also
#* make sure you use the default theme

  • Firefox will not respond after restarting my computer after making changes in the cookies and history settings

I make some changes with cookies and cleared my history for today...and then restarted my computer...now firefox will not open...will not respond...should I uninstall firefox and then reinstall it?
If I uninstall firefox will the changes I made with the cookies and my history be reversed?
If I were to uninstall and then reinstall firefox will I loose my bookmarks if I do this? or does firefox remember them...so when I reinstall the previous bookmarks are reinstalled too?

Does Firefox starts up when you first open it after rebooting the computer but hangs the next time you try to start it? If so, then there's a [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1005487 bug] in Firefox 29 where Firefox hangs on exit when the setting "Clear history when Firefox closes" is selected, so that you get an "already running but not responding" error the next time you ttry to start it. In that case, end the firefox.exe process in the Windows Task Manager (or reboot the computer) then reset your Firefox Privacy options and UNCHECK the option "Clear history when Firefox closes". See this article for details:
[[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
If that's not the problem and Firefox still not open even after rebooting the computer then try starting in Firefox Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting Firefox. If Firefox starts then see the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to narrow down the cause.

  • Please help! Safari keeps hanging/not responding and freezes everything else up.

I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and Safari (5.1.9) keeps hanging/crashing. I'm afraid I'm not very good with these things so I'll just have to tell the story...
It's happening when I start up Safari, either the home page (Google) doesn't fully load and the pinwheel appears, or it loads but as soon as I try to search or use bookmarks the pinwheel appears. I'm unable to quit Safari, open or close Finder or any software, and it won't shut down normally either. I've tried using Cmd-Option-Esc to Force Quit but the pinwheel appears again and nothing happens. The only option left is to do a hard shut down. After repeating this 5 or 6 times it eventually lets me use Safari, but will almost always hang again unexpectedly at some point during the day. I know this isn't the best way to deal with it but I don't know what else to do!
I'm sorry if this question has already been asked and answered, but because I don't have an error report I don't know whether my issue is the same and don't want to start messing with things when I'm not sure what I'm doing. Thanks in advance for your help!
P.S. The unexpected hanging and freezing started while I was running Leopard and an older version of Safari. I tried to back up and reinstall the OS but my optical disk drive wouldn't read the disk, so I had to take it to an Apple store where they couldn't find anything wrong but installed Snow Leopard and hoped that fixed the problem. It didn't, and it's since started happening on start up, as described above.

Open Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairing, you will need to use the install disc(s) that came with your Mac.

  • Firefox keeps 'not responding.' I updated plug ins. HP smart web printing is listed under my extensions with an alert saying it's not compatible, but it will not give me the option to 'uninstall' or 'disable.' What else might be making firefox freeze?

Firefox is now unable to load games (example -- facebook games).
Seems like Firefox will load a page, but if I try to do anything on the page -- it tells me that it is 'not responding.'

Step by step, how did you arrive at seeing this agreement?

  • Firefox keeps not responding after re-install

I just got this computer last Tuesday, and I immediately installed Firefox. It worked perfectly, as it should, with no problems or crashes whatsoever. But, I ended up installing an extension I don't normally use because I wanted to check out how the features worked, and it messed up Firefox a bit... the new tab button was all the way on the right, tiny and kind of broken from the rest of the tab bar. It also installed a "search tabs" thing on the left that, even after uninstalling the add-on, remained there, which was very annoying and also broken/not level with the tab bar.
This caused me to uninstall and reinstall Firefox so it would look like it's supposed to. But after reinstalling it, every so often Firefox freezes and says not responding for a couple of seconds. Sometimes it happens every hour, every 20 minutes, or even goes a whole day without it happening. But, it still happens. And also, when I went to update the Adobe Reader web plugin, Firefox froze to the point where I couldn't do anything... the "not responding" thing didn't occur, but it's like when I tried clicking on a tab my computer would ding and not do anything. I don't know what caused this but I know sometimes it happens when it wants you to confirm something or accept security access or something, but there was absolutely no reason to do this.
How come Firefox worked perfectly the day I got it, but after reinstalling it the next day because of an error on my part, it acts as if this is the crappiest computer in the world that freezes because of overload?

  • Firefox keeps "not responding" all the time ... is very anoring

it happens mostly while using facebook's posting page (FB and the Zynga games on FB are the only thing I'm on most of the time I'm on line) ... I keep running into "FIREFOX NOT RESPONDING" all the time ... I'll go to click on a posting and nothing happens ... when i click again the page goes cloudy and that DARN blue wheel shows up (I hate the wheel) & at top of computer is says "Firefox not responding" ... my scrolling wheel will not work right ... jumps up & down the page or won't move at all ... always have to be refreshing the page or exit firefox & reopen ... looses connection a lot or is out of sync & has to be refreshed ... this started to happen several weeks back after I first downloaded Firefox 4 ... in fact I've had to reload it several times ... this is all very frustrating when trying to play my games ... I've defragmented, run both my AGV & windows washer programs several times but nothing seems to help ... had no problems with earlier firefox so tried to reload it but now can't get earlier version to work either

  • Firefox is not responding and will not connect beyond start page. It will not close properly or restart. Is there a solution to this problem?

2 days ago, firefox just stopped responding. When I open, the start up screen shows but navigating to any other web pages is not possible. All I see is "connecting" and it just spins. No warnings or time outs. I thought it was an issue with my firewall so I went in and manually added firefox to the list of "allowed". That didn't help. I removed all apps, extensions and themes then tried to reset.. that didn't help because firefox wont restart it just hangs and I have to use task manager to end the process. I have tried a forced uninstall then reinstall.. nothing. At this point nothing seems to work. Maybe there is a simple solution I'm just not seeing. For now, it is uninstalled but I really would like to know if there is a way to fix it because firefox is my favorite browser. I'm not finding any maleware or viruses on my computer and other browsers are working just fine.

Great to hear. Please flag your last post as '''Solved Problem''' so
that others will know what to do.
    Happy Computing.

  • Firefox keeps 'Not Responding' when I try to load something

When I close and open Firefox again when I go to a website and for example I go to click on a picture, it doesn't crash but it doesn't respond and after about 30 seconds it works, this happens a lot now and I have reset my firefox but still it keeps doing this and it is quite annoying. After sometime it seems to settle in and it works, but I would rather this not happen because this has never happened before.

Mozilla seem to be losing the plot. In the past, people expected Microsoft to release software which contained security problems and then re-release it, only for it not to work properly. Now it appears Mozilla is taking over that role! And the solution to this? Install a Beta version, a version still under development!
I suspect that the very great majority of software users look for stability, for a program which works well and meets their immediate needs and which will continue to do so for some time - certainly months rather than, as it appears, days, before a new, "improved" version is developed. Maybe Mozilla should think along these lines; meanhwile, I'm going back to the latest 15 release.

  • Firefox keeps "Not Responding" randomly, then comes back after 10-15 Seconds.

Every now and then, when I'm on Firefox it will not respond then the window will fill white and at the top it will say "Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding)".
It responds after about 10-15 seconds but this keeps happening every 2-3 Minutes and is making Firefox unusable to watch videos on Youtube and read other things as when it starts responding it take me back to the top of the page.
I cannot pinpoint which websites this is on but it normally (But not always) happens when I have more than one tab open (Usually on Youtube + SammyServers.com)

I'm already sick enough of this problem over the past few weeks that I was ready to switch to Chrome, but thought that I would check Firefox support first.
If there isn't a fix soon, I'll definitely be switching. I've not had problems like this with Firefox before, but this is very disruptive.
