Firefox keeps opening random website on it's own after regular intervals

Firefox keeps opening some random websites (alpha.com or something etc.) after regular intervals on its own. I have installed all the latest updates of flash etc. but it doesn't seem to solve the issue.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

Firefox keeps opening tabs whether I am on-line or not. These are often games pages, but not always. I have reset several times and there are no pipe characters in the home page address. This is not the first time this has happened. The first time was a couple of months ago and a reset cured the problem, but this time it does not. How can I stop this occurring?

Some malware simply launches pages in your default browser from outside Firefox. Definitely scan for malware using some of the tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
There might be an additional step:
Last year, many users reported advertising tabs opening randomly, sometimes even when Firefox was closed. It turned out that a program had created scheduled tasks to open those pages at certain times of day.
You can check the Windows Task Scheduler:
* Windows XP: Start button > [All] Programs > Accessories> System Tools > Scheduled Tasks
* Windows Vista/7: Start button > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler
* Windows 8: ?? You might try the charms bar search box if you don't find it in the control panel.

• Cant get Safari or Firefox to open youtube website anyone else having this problem?

I can't get safari or firefox to open youtube website, keeps saying server not available and it has been doing it for a month. Anyone having this problem?

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)
You can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue you can open Firefox in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
Thank you.

• Firefox keeps opening window after window on it's own

Very often, when I try to run my firefox to explore various websites, it will suddenly start jumping to a different site. If I hit the back button, it goes back to where I was, and immediately jumps forward again. If I close the browser, a new one opens up...sometimes three or four windows at a time. I am currently using a Windows 7 machine, but it also occurred on my Windows XP computer. This has happened on 2 machines, both connected and disconnected from my wireless network, and with differing softwares loaded on each. Therefore, I firmly believe it must be something wrong with the software itself.

You may have a content type incorrectly set to "Use Firefox". This article should help - Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows, start with the section "Change the action for a content type".

• When I want to mail a web-page or link firefox keeps opening new windows and cannot be stopped.

My laptop is a Samsung R730 (quite happy with it). I use Eudora for e-mailing. If I want to mail a web-page or link and click under 'file'to send it, Firefox starts opening new tabs without stopping up to over a hundred. I have to brutally switch off my lap-top, start agaiu. Restart Firefox which wants to open all the old tabs, click it off quickly. After that I can reopen to normal.

You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file if you get an "open with" dialog.

• Firefox keeps opening things in new windows

Every time I click to open something in a new tab, it opens in a new window instead. I checked to see if I'd accidentally changed my options to make things open in new windows instead of tabs, but I hadn't. Also, every time I start Firefox, three windows pop up instead of just one. They seem like little things, but it's really irritating.

Hi Fantasmically,
You might want to take a look at Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows. It seems to be spot on for the issue you are describing.
You might also want to try starting Firefox in Safe Mode. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide and the Troubleshooting plugins article as well.
Hopefully this helps!

• IPhoto keeps opening randomly

After I updated my Mac to Os X Lion, I noticed that iPhoto keeps opening randomly, by itself, for no reason. No, I am not plugging in a camera, or my iPod, or anything- it just opens by itself. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? It also says that new pictures that aren't in your library have been found, but then they aren't there. Can anyone help with this too?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
Regards
TD

• Firefox keeps remembering a website and won't allow me to log out and will not return to login page. been to cookies, saved passord options, nothing helps

firefox keeps remembering a website and won't allow me to log out and will not return to login page. been to cookies, saved password options, says no password is saved but it is. nothing helps

It might be that you are logged in with HTTP authentication (either basic or digest). This authentication is arranged by the browser, so you would have seen a pop-up dialog asking for a user name and password while logging in. It seems that these are cached by the browser and it requires you to restart the browser to log out...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_access_authentication
http://www.tolaris.com/2009/09/08/logging-out-of-http-auth-with-firefox/
Because I found that having to restart the browser quite annoying I stumbled on this question and also on the HTTP Logout add-on that allows you to log out without restarting your browser. Not many sites use HTTP Authentication, but you might give it a try.

• Firefox keeps crashing randomly. I've tried refreshing, reinstalling, and clearing redundant plugins. Help please...

Hi,
My Firefox keeps crashing, seemingly randomly. It could be when I open a new page, or when just reading through a page of text.
I've tried starting in safe mode, doing multiple refreshes, reinstalling Firefox, and disabling redundant plugins like multiple shockwave.
Any help would be appreciated. I love Firefox, but this has been making it extremely frustrating to use.

hi Josh, that looks like a crash triggered by your nvidia graphics driver in relation to hardware acceleration in firefox - please try updating the graphics driver for your model on the nvidia website, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

• Can't open random websites in any browser

Put some serious hours into finding a solution for this problem last night, just obsessed now.
The two websites in question are www.iphonehacks.com and www.dropbox.com
As per an older post by Linc Davis I booted into recovery mode and had no problem opening the sites in Safari.
By the way, the problem is system wide, all browsers are affected. I can also connect to the sites with my iphone 4s while on my wi-fi
I have systematically removed extensions and attempted to match the Safari preferences I saw while in recovery mode to no avail.
I have run EntreCheck and these are the results if that's helpful.

How to Clean Up/Speed up Your Mac
Regular MaintenanceOne-Off Maintenance
Edited by Andrew, Teresa, Raymond Madison, Charles85 and 6 others
Macs are epic. They are fast, look good, and are high quality. However, they don't like having a full hard drive. This guide will help you to free up that extra space.
Method 1 of 2: Regular Maintenance
1
Delete apps that you do not use. Drag and trash the unused apps. Manually search and remove application-related preference and support files, or try to use uninstaller tools like CleanGenius or AppZapper to uninstall applications.
To make sure that you delete any application bundles or additional, read this article on how to uninstall files on a Mac. You'll need to search Finder and look for File Name in your search criteria.
2
Empty out the trash. It may sound obvious, but clearing out the trash will help your computer run smoother. Don't use the trash as a landing dock for temporary files; only place files in your Trash if you're sure you want to delete them.
3
Use programs like XSlimmer to clean up the obsolete code from apps. Maintenance programs like XSlimmer checks which code your computer needs for a given program and removes the rest.[1] This will reduce the space taken up on your disk and get your computer running faster.
4
Compress and archive your old files. Provided your files aren't already compressed, compressing them will make them dramatically smaller, freeing up extra space on your hard drive. In order to find out how to compress files on a Mac, click here.
Once your files are compressed, move them to an external hard drive to on a CD for storage. Keeping files you don't regularly use on your computer will slow it down.
5
Clean up system logs and temporary files periodically. Your system should automatically run UNIX maintenance scripts, but some earlier versions of Mac OSX only run these scripts between 3 and 5 AM, during which time most computers are either asleep or shut off, depriving your system of regular maintenance.[2]
Download a free app like OnyX to do scheduled maintenance and clean up system logs and temporary files.
If you want to clean up system logs and temporary files manually,
Access terminal by navigating to Applications → Utilities → Terminal
In Terminal, type in "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" and hit Enter
Type in your Mac admin password
Wait for your system to run the maintenance, after which you'll be returned to Terminal
6
Remove iOS backups that are old and no longer up to date. An iPod, iPhone, or iPad will automatically run a backup on specific files when you plug the device into your computer. Trashing older, obsolete backups will help free up space on your computer.
To access the backups, navigate to Home → Library → Application Support → MobileSync → Backup folder. Locate the newer backups and the older backups. Delete the older backups.
7
Periodically check your ~/Movies/, ~/Music/, and ~/Downloads/ folders. Drag unneeded files to the Trash. Apps like to save here, and this can result in used space, so be vigilant about what gets put in here.
8
Delete any unused or old DMGs, iPhone software bundles (IPSW), and similar files. These files are often unnecessary and take up valuable space on your device. Get rid of them if you no longer need them.
Deleting DMGs: DMG files are disk images. Cnce you've mounted your disk image and installed your app, you're free to eject and trash your DMG. To eject, simply drag the mounted volume to the trash.
Deleting IPSW: Navigate to Library → iTunes → iPhone Software Updates and locate any unused bundles.

• My macbook air keeps opening ad websites without my permission. I've removed all website data various times which hasn't worked. this is making it very difficult for me to browse. please help?

I'm scared i have a virus. safari keeps opening windows/tabs without my permission. these are normally ads. i have removed website data various times which hasn't worked.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

• Why does Firefox keep opening new Windows rather than a new Tab in the current window?

I have " Open a new Tab in the current Window" select in Preferences.
Why then does this version (Version 4) keep opening new Windows, rather than new Tabs in the current Window.
This feature worked fine in 3.6.1.3, but in Version 4, it is a frigging pain in the rigging!
C'mon, Mozilla - time for an URGENT update ...

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• Firefox keeps opening in a new tab

I continuously have to disable the option within Firefox to open new windows in a new tab instead.
This seems to work properly for an intermittent amount of time and then randomly, I'll click a link and instead of being redirected to a new window, the URL will be displayed in a new tab instead.
I'll then repeat the process of going to tools -> options -> and unchecking the option for opening in a new tab.
This process will then be good for an undisclosed amount of time before reoccurring. Is there something wrong here or is there some tweak that I can do to only allow new windows?
I only really enjoy tabbed browsing when I explicitly want a tab. Otherwise when I click links I like them to open in new windows instead of tabs.

Hi,

Firefox keeps reopening my old tabs every time i exit and return. this is an annoying feature for me and i would love if someone could help me resolve the issue. I just want Firefox to open at my home page when i launch the program

TOOLS then OPTIONS then in GENERAL TAB at Start up in session WHEN FIREFOX STARTS put SHOW MY HOME PAGE and put your home page in HOME PAGE session down this one. Dont forget to click OK to save changes.
