Firefox load-time steadily increasing. No change of Add-ons

Hi to all readers ! I have been running Firefox as my browser on a Linux PC system for many years. I do a lot of web searching for scientific information, so I have many Add-ons installed. Over the years, the boot-up time has steadily increased to around 25 secs so, about a month ago, I systematically tested the Add-ons to find which was slowing things down and discovered that AdBlock Edge was the culprit. I replaced this with plain AdBlock and my boot-up time dropped to about 4 secs --- which was fine. However, over the past week or two it has begun to creep up again even though nothing in the configuration has changed. I am running Firefox Ver:36.0.1. for Linux Mint Ver 17 ("Qiana") on a Dell GX-520 tower with 2 GB of memory. Firefox is the only app running on this machine. All the up-dates for "Mint" have been installed. Boot-up time is now averaging about 11 secs with variations between 7-13 secs. Can anyone please explain why the boot time varies when nothing on the system has been changed and why it is apparently increasing from an average of 4 secs. Many thanks and best regards to all readers -

  • Firefox closes and wont open on installing certain add ons

I was using Firefox today and suddenly one of the add ons ( Download Helper ) started to be irresponsive. I tried to close firefox and reopen it and wont open. The icon flashes and goes away. I removed the app using Appzapper and downloaded and run a clean reinstall. Now, I went on to download all the add ons I used to have (Download Helper, Sage and few others) and restarted firefox and the symptoms reappeares. I tried to create a new profile and it didn't work. I used Safe mode to deactivate the plugins and it works, whenever one of them ( which I used to have before the problems ) is activated Firefox crashes. I went on to create a new Account and tried the same and it is working perfectly. So, can you tell me what I might have done wrong to cause this?

    Hello Pranav.
If your Firefox is closing unexpectedly, see this support article:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes
If you are unable to install add-ons, see this support article:

Remember that if you have a problem with a specific add-on, you need to contact its author for support.

If you are using the same computer that you are reporting seeing these messages on as far as I can see Firefox is up to date.

You can use this extension to make a backup of the current Firefox profile folder:

  • How can I re-download the previous version of Firefox. I have lost most of my add-ons with 4.0 including my password manager. This is a calamity and I've changed my default browser from Firefox. Help!!!

The problem is very simple. As soon as I downloaded Firefox 4.0 I lost my add-ons. The add-ons were the reason I have been using Firefox for several years. This seems to be ludicrous. The new version should be able to manage integration of existing add-ons or the Firefox team should have provided the add-on authors with advance technical information before releasing 4.0 to the world.

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

  • I just updated to Firefox 4.0 and how do I change the Add-ons window from opening in a tab (I prefer the old window style)?

After updating to Firefox 4.0, I am unable to get the Add-ons tab (ctrl-shift-A) to open in a separate window like it did in 3.6. Where may I find the option/plugin/addon to be able to do this?

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5. You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • After I updated to 5.o, every time I start Firefox it does the " Checking for compatibilty of add-ons " thing and also opens a " Welcome to Firefox 5.0 " tab in addition to my home page. Is there any way to stop this, it is really annoying.

    Same as above.

Thee can also be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry.<br />

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.

  • Firefox does not recognize that I already have add-ons installed (prompts to install add-ons I already have installed AND turned on). Why?

Add-ons, which are updated and already installed and running (and have been for some time), seem to think they are not added. When looking at my add-ons in the Tools menu, they are listed as enabled. However, clicking to go to their information page on the web (where you can read reviews, and where you originally chose to add them to Firefox), the "add to firefox" button is available. (As opposed to some sort of "already installed" or "uninstall" or "reinstall" button) I tested the button to see if pressing it would THEN tell me "you already have this", but it didn't! It started downloading the plug-in I already have! What is going on?

hello Amsuko, the "+ Add to Firefox" button on addons.mozilla.org and similar sites is just a normal static element on the website. websites don't have the possibility to query which extensions a user has already installed (this would probably be seen as a privacy/security breach). in case you install an addon that is already present on your system, it will simply get replaced...

  • After installing Firefox 12.0 now it freezes on "checking add-ons" and won't open

I got an update notice and installed Firefox 12.0. I installed and the program froze during "Checking Your Add-Ons" portion of the install. Now Firefox will not open. Keeps getting stuck on that same step of the install. Tried installing 4 different old versions of firefox and the exact same problem. I sit and wait up to 20 minutes and nothing happens, I just get an hour-glass for checking add-ons phase of install. I'm using windows 7.

  • Firefox keeps opening tabs to tell me about add ons!

Since the latest upgrade, when I open Firefox, 5 or 6 other tabs open telling me about the features of add ons. I am so frustrated by this that I have ACTUALLY STOPPED USING FIREFOX!!! Can anyone tell me how to stop this?? It doesn't matter if I click on the icon, or a URL!!

  • Firefox does not open to "maximized" after updating add-ons and performing the restart

After checking for any updates to installed add-ons and, if there should be an update(s) available, and ... after performing the download of the update(s) with a "RESTART FIREFOX" is needed ... Firefox does not restart/reopen to MAXIMIZED. I have to manually maximize Firefox.

This problem ... I suspect ... is only when I am using Windows XP Home w/SP3. This problem does not occur when I use Firefox on Ubuntu (Linux). So now, I don't know if there is a problem with Firefox using Windows XP or that the problem is with Windows XP using Firefox. In any case, I will not just do the extra clicking to maximize Firefox after updating the addons and such. Thanks anyway.

  • I have a Mac laptop, 10.6.8. My firefox stopped opening. It would crash before opening. I cleared it out, downloaded a new firefox 8, but it crashes before opening. I removed it and tried several times. No special programs or add-ons.

I get the symbol, it goes into the application folder fine, the icon shows on the desktop when attempting to open, it "bounces" when I click to open, then it reverts to the crash report icon with the report window.
