Firefox loads in the center of my screen and I have to use Ctrl+ to make it bigger so I can read it.

When Firefox loads, or when it changes to a different screen, it is always centered on my monitor with lots of white space on both sides of the content. To make it larger so I can read thescreen, I have to hold the Ctrl key and tap the Plus key (+) several times until the screen is full.
Under Options/Content/Advanced, I have checked the "Allow pages to choose their own fonts..." If I don't check this, then the fonts on the pages overlap each other and I can't read anything.

You can use one of these extensions to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages:

It is best to leave the Font settings in "Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced" at the default to avoid problems.

After Firefox has been on for awhile, the Firefox tabs on the task bar disappear even though the pages are still running. I have to use Ctrl+Tab to fix it

I have started using Firefox recently. My computer is running XP. I notice that whether I have one Firefox window or multiple windows open, after awhile the Firefox tabs on the bottom task bar just disappear.
In order to get them back I have to use Ctrl+Tab to select each window one at a time and then they re-appear again on the task bar. Then after awhile they will disappear again.

You may have the accessibility VoiceOver feature turned on.
Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:

Firefox opened Oct 15, 2014 as a black screen. I have been using it for years with no problems. Can't get it to reinstall.

Why don't you stop using that program if it isn't working properly and corrupts your Firefox installation?
Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

Alot probably was installed when you downloaded/installed some software from the internet. Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more common for these kinds of "extras" (toolbars, security scanners, etc.) to be added to your browser/system/desktop when adding or updating other software, some from very well-know software vendors. You must carefully read information before downloading any "free" software and be very alert during the install process for any opportunity to opt-out of "extras" being installed.

The most common error I get is:
Expected end of line, etc. but found “end tell”.
I tried modeling one of any number of existing scripts but still no dice.
I tried this:
