Firefox locks up frequently

Firefox locks up, which then locks up my whole computer for about 30-45 seconds when browsing websites. Sometimes it happens over and over and over, sometimes I can go a week without a problem. It's not a particular website...just random. I've tried with and without my addons. This is a brand new computer I built with Win7, no other issues.

I had the same problem. The solution: New mainboard. ALL mainboards using NVidia chipsets are likely to crash every hour or so because of crappy programmed drivers and hardware that's operating beyond save limits. I had all kinds of problems: USB-devices disconnecting frequently, system refusing to boot every now and then, all browsers crashing and all sorts of other neat problems. I just swapped the mainboard to an AMD-Chipset and now everything works fine. No crashes the last two months. I'm still using the same Windows7 installation, the same firefox and my old profile that previously crashed 10 times a day. I just swapped the mainboard, deinstalled the nvidia drivers, then installed new network and sound-drivers. That's it.

• Firefox locks up and crashes when trying to print a PDF from a website?

I am using Firefox ver 3.6.13 Every time I try to print a PDF displayed on a web site Firefox locks up. If I have several tabs open all of them are locked. I have to use taskmanager to end the program and restart Firefox. To print the PDF's I have to save them then open them using Adobe reader and print that way.
I can vie the PDF within Firefox and all is good. It only locks up when I try to print. Printing any non pdf page I have no problem.

On my x64 Win 7 system, practically the whole system was frozen. After the "Print" button was pressed the dialog stating "Preparing" came up, but I had to use Cntrl+Shift+Esc to open task manager. Then I had to use keyboard arrows to select firefox.exe and Alt+E to end task and the space bar to confirm. Mouse would move, but not "click" anything. If I attempted to click anything, I had to Cntrl+Alt+Del to get to where I could "Log Off" and that forced firefox to quit.
I found my problem was an addon with improper settings. Internet Download Manager addon was loading with firefox, but in IDM's actual options, the check box to integrate IDM with Mozilla was NOT checked and the Advanced integration with browsers was also unchecked. I had been having issues with downloading from sites that do not allow 3rd party software to download, and it was taking forever holding down the key that prevented IDM from intercepting the download, so I changed the option in IDM, and I could still right click and select "download with IDM" from the context menu. Re-selecting the check box next to Mozilla fixed the problem

• Firefox stops responding frequently; there is no specific pattern to these episodes which might identify the problem.

Firefox stops responding frequently (2 or 3 times daily). There are no observable patterns to these episodes which might identify a specific task that causes the crash. It has been increasing in frequency for about a month now.

Can't say

I have the same problem. I have diabled all my add-on's with no effect.
I have found that it has nothing to do with mulitple tabs.
But have found that it mostly (maybe only) happens with pages that containes lots of links, banners and adverts.
Typhically news and other "free" pages which relies heavily on sponsorship and such.
Why, because the pages work fine for a few seconds while it still load all the crap.
Have tried the same pages with IE and they work fine.
Obviously IE has gained an advantage on Mozilla this time.
Hope Mozilla will come with a fix since I have enjoyed them for some years no.

• Firefox locks file if a hyperlink is used from that file

If I used a hyperlink contain within a file, Firefox locks the file. Going to a different URL after does not release the file's lock.
The only way I've found is to close Firefox. I am then able to delete the file containing the hyperlink.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

• Firefox locks up every time I try to print to PDF.

Every time I try to print to PDF, Firefox locks up and has to be shut down. I have the latest versions of Firefox ver 35, all Windows 7 updates, Adobe Acrobat Professional 9.5, etc. I tried refreshing Firefox and it did not help. I tried making a new profile and staring with it, and that did not help. I am stumped. Can you help get this fixed?

It may be that you can change the current pdf reader, or try to reinstall it. In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button and click Options.
#In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the Applications panel.
#In the Search field, type PDF. You should find Portable Document Format (PDF).
#On the right hand side you should find an Action column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose Preview in Firefox.
Another troubleshooting step would be to try resetting the printing options in Firefox. Fix printing problems in Firefox

• Since the Version 20.0 update when starting firefox I have frequently got the error message "firefox is having trouble your windows and tabs" .

Since the version 20.0 update when starting firefox I have frequently got the error message "firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs" This has not occurred with previous versions. If I click on the box "restore" and close firefox the problem reoccurs if I click close I lose the bookmark sidebar. I am so sick and tired of these frequent and buggy updates (every one since 17.0 have caused norton 360 to stop detecting tracking cookies for several weeks and or broken the norton toolbar) that I will uninstall firefox and switch to another browser if this does not change.

• Firefox locks up on the Onion AV Club website (possibly plugin container problem).

Over the last couple of weeks when I try to look at a page on the Onion AV Club website, Firefox locks up completely. The page will open up but won't finish loading, the hourglass stays on the screen, and the page will not scroll. I find there is no solution for this but to close Firefox altogether. I have no problem accessing AV Club pages with Google Chrome. I suspect the problem may have to do with plugin container, but I don't really know what the cause is.

You can run Java in Firefox.exe instead of plugin-container.exe, but I'm not sure that actually would be better than where you are now.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste java and pause while the list is filtered
(3) If dom.ipc.plugins.java.enabled is true (bolded), right-click it and choose Reset (or double-click it to toggle).
If that value already is false, you might be having a problem with another common plugin such as Flash.

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs on each start of Firefox.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there.
you can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

I've noticed a similar problem, which has started occurring only recently. If I'm dictating into Firefox 8 using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, whether it be into the search bar or into a Gmail compose e-mail window, Firefox can lock up without warning. The only way I've found to recover from the problem is to forcefully close Firefox using the Windows task manager.
