Firefox lost master password

Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
Linux 3.2.0-67-generic
GNOME 3.4.2
AMD Phenom II X4 920
3.9 GiB ram
1.6 TiB available disk space
149 GiB swap
Firefox 31.0 (Canonical 1.0)
Everything seems to be running normally, then I try to log in and firefox does not auto-fill the password. The password file is empty. I am unable to reset the master password. This is the second time this happened. The first time I tried everything, including a complete uninstall before an install. The only thing that worked was to use a spare hard drive install Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64.

Hmm.. there are a lot of ways to obtain a password, but they aren't always legal.
Firstly check if there is a forgot password feature on the website you try to get access to, if there is they often sent a reset link for your password to the email you registered with.
If there isn't such a link, but you did have to register with your email address try to contact the administrators or support team and ask them if there is a way to get access to your account. Email adresses nowadays aren't always trustworthy however since they can be spoofed, so it's possible they don't want to help you that way.
I recommend using another password manager like KeePass since it's a little more secure and, although there aren't as much viruses for linux as for Windows it's always a good idea to store your passwords someplace outside your browser, if you choose to store them somewhere at all.
If you re-used your password anywhere you might try these steps on the website(s) where you did.
Then there's always the option of brute-forcing your password/using a dictionary attack, but you shouldn't get to this, since this is illegal. What you might try to do however, is try SOME combinations that are similar to the passwords you've used before. If you used very complicated passwords and you trusted Firefox to store it, you are probably out of luck.
I recommend you use passphrases as your passwords, because they are pretty easy to remember as long as you use a website often enough. Also I recommend having a backup of your passwords on a password protected USB to make sure you won't lose your passwords again.

You can delete the key3.db file and logins.json file and a possible signons.sqlite file or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Can not understand how to reset lost master password key

I have read how to change it but can not figure to do it

Did you try to use the chrome URL in the location bar?
    chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul
If using the chrome url doesn't work then delete the key3.db and signons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

To reset the administrator password using the Mac OS X Install disc:
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.
When you hear the startup tone, press and hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.
When the Language Chooser appears, select your language and click Continue.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Reset Password.

  • Lost master password - HELP

    Hi guys,
I lost my master-password. Well, not really, because I set it to 'Chait' but now it does not work. I have tried the DVDs that came with my computer and was unable to find an option to change the master password. I would really appreciate it if you can tell me an easy way to fix this.
    Thanks in advance all's

    Hi.
A year ago I was given an older G4 tower from work, circa 1999-2000, and the person who set up the master password was not working here anymore. I was planning to wipe the info eventually, but I wanted to remove some important files, etc. I went to the accounts section and added myself as an administrator, logged out the old administrator, logged in under my name, then removed the old administrator. Now I was the only user and was able to use the computer without having to buy system software. It saved me hours of reformating and it ran fine until a few years ago when I put a fresh OS X on it with more memory.
    Hope this helped.
Again, I am not sure if this would work on the newer X's like Tiger. On the older it did the trick.

  • HELP!!! I lost master password!

HELP, I forgot my master password and even if there's a hint (and I know the answer) I've been trying all the possible combinations of upper/lower case that I can think of but it didn't work. Is there a way to recover/change it? Thanks a lot!!

A friend of mine said that while it is a pain in the toches, it could be resolved by disabling FileVault on every account, and then deleting a "FileVaultMaster.keychain" file, resetting the master password, and then enabling FileVault on each account again.
    That seems basically correct.
I found several reports that there are actually two files, "FileVaultMaster.keychain" and "FileVaultMaster.cer", both in HD>Library>Keychains (not username>Library>Keychains) associated with the master passsword. After first turning off FileVault everywhere, removing these two files should enable you to re-enter a new master password. See

My concern is that resetting the Master Password would effect other apportionments of MacOS, is this the case or not?
I highly doubt it, but I can't give you a better answer than "probably not"!
I'd keep a backup of the two removed files, rather than deleting them altogether.

  • Firefox somehow changed my mac's master password, now i cannot use my masterpassword anymore. can i somehow override my screw up?

i've tried the password i reset it to, to no avail. i cannot alter the master password settting in my mac os prefereces anymore. I'm afraid to shut it off now.

Firefox's Master Password -- used to secure passwords you've saved in Firefox -- shouldn't be connected to your Mac's password(s). Unless Firefox works very differently on Mac than on Windows.

  • I have firefox on 2 notebooks, one for and one for home. I have master passwords on both. The passwords is the same. Will sync sync the information I have stored under my masterword?

    Firefox sync
    Master Passwords on two PC(s).
    Master passwords are the same.
Will sync sync the information stored under the master password?
If so, if there is a conflict, will I be given the choice to choose what information is correct?
    etc?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Sync will ask for your Master Password on each device when it tries to sync. As long as your MP is unlocked, Sync will behave just as if there was no MP; passwords will be synced to make your devices appear the same.
If you wish to replace the contents of one device with those of another, take a look in Sync Options (when you set up), or choose Reset Sync in Sync Preferences.

  • Firefox master password prompt appears randomly

Every time I open Firefox, the Master Password prompt appears randomly within about 30 seconds. Sometimes I'm still sitting on the home screen when I get the prompt.
I have tried to refresh Firefox, reinstall Firefox, I've turned my Master Password requirement on and off, restarted the computer... nothing seems to work.
I would either like the prompt right away, as soon as I open my browser, or when it is actually required, like when I open a login page. Not the current, seemingly random appearance that disrupts me in the middle of web browsing.
This bug is so annoying that it is a deal breaker for me. It's especially annoying when I am starting to type something, then the Master Password prompt appears without warning and takes the cursor focus with it. I have to stop what I'm doing, deal with the Master Password prompt, then get back to what I'm doing.
In the meantime, I've switched over to Chrome, which is serving my needs fine, but I would like to come back to Firefox if I can resolve this issue.

    Hi Will,
    Are you using Firefox Sync?
In order to keep your sync login details secure, you have to unlock your master password before Firefox can synchronise.

  • When I open FireFox the 'Security Password' window opens TWICE both must be typed in to open FireFox, Why?

When I load FireFox the Master Security Password window opens 2 times. Both must be filled in for FireFox to access passwords. Why and how do I correct this?

Are you using Firefox Sync or reopen pages that you've saved a password for?

  • Master password, who are you and who asks for it ?

Today I wonder about Master Password in my Firefox 15.0 - I have enable it since long long time.
When I visit bookmarked site with stored user name and password the site ask me about master password but there is no information about name site which ask for it in dialog box. Everything work fine with one opened site but if I opening many tabs? I don`t now who ask about for it. Can i configuring my Firefox browser to do it more talking about it?

Unfortunately you can't make the Master Password dialog show more information by configuring Firefox. I also couldn't find any extension for it. However, there is an extension that asks you for your master password at browser start so it's not that annoying during your browser session.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/master-password
    Hope this helps.

  • Why doesn't the quality meter approve of any of my choices of master passwords, no matter how I mix both letters, digits and non-alphanumeric characters?

I tried to create a master password, but it couldn't be done 'cause the quality meter never accepted any of my passwords, even though I used a very complicated mix of letters, digits and special characters as well.

There are no requirements when setting Firefox's master password. The password quality meter is purely informative.
If you're trying to fill the bar all the way, that's unlikely unless you create a lengthy password, or a very complex mix of special characters, digits and lowercase and uppercase letters. Keep in mind the master password should be easily remembered and typed in, time after a time. A highly secure password that is easily mistyped or forgotten is of no use.

  • After typing master password in session can I force typing master password again without ending current session and starting new session?

Sometimes after using the master password to access an account during a given firefox session I would like to "revoke" this ability for automatic access (i.e. require typing the master password again) without having to end the current session and restart firefox.
While it is nice to only have to type the master password once per session, there are times when after starting some action I would like to leave the browser unattended for a short time but prevent others from accessing sensitive information at other sites if they do not know my master password. Note this is not the same as "locking the browser." Presently the only way I know to force this is to kill the current session and restart the browser but this is not very satisfactory if I actually want to stay connected (authorized) at a particular site. I would hope that adding a button on the security tab to "require master password for current session" would be a simple fix to implement? Thank you for your attention.

While waiting for a response to this question, I stumbled upon a partial (good workaround) answer to my question in the form of a Firefox addon, Master Password Timeout [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/master-password-timeout/ ]. Among other things it adds "Logout Master Password" as an option under the Firefox "Tools" menu which then gives the functionality I was looking for.
It seems to me though that this is a basic security option that would be good for a general Firefox user to be aware of since leaving a browser open unattended with no master password required could easily lead to trouble. Before finding this addon I was not aware that Firefox 4 had a 30 minute default timeout for the master password. At least in my case I have left Firefox going overnight on home computers and have not had to retype the master password the next morning... so somehow I missed having this "default" set when I upgraded to Firefox 4.
