Firefox lost my profile. My husband's profile seems to have overridden my own even on my Windows login.

Firefox 3.6.3 lost my profile. My husband's profile has overridden mine even on my Windows login. I cannot even log in to sites on my Windows profile because the cookies are gone and the sites refuse to recognize me. I am running Windows Vista.Please help.

Do the two of you share a vista account? If not, then it should still work if you log in to your account. Firefox keeps profiles separate per windows account.
If the two of you ''do'' share a Vista account, then go to '''Help > Troubleshooting Information''', and click on '''Open Containing Folder'''. That should open the current profile folder in windows explorer. Move one folder up to see if there are other profile folders in existence. See [[Managing Profiles]]

  • When I do a search, with MSN as my homepage, it pops up in a new window not a tab like it used to. MSN says it is Firefox related. How do I fix this? I have the option selected to open new windows in tabs instead and it still won't work.

    <blockquote>Locking duplicate thread.<br>

    I use Firefox 4.0.1 and have MSN set as my homepage. Recently, even with the option set to make windows open in tabs instead, if I do searches on the MSN page, the results pop up in a new window. I contacted MSN and they said it is something to do with Firefox. It didn't use to do this, even after initially upgraded to 4.0.1, but started about a week ago and even with me doing nothing to my computer. How do I get this to stop and go back to new tabs instead?
    It does not do this using Google, AOL, Yahoo, or another other search, just MSN/Bing.

    That's strange. It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is changing your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal? Also have you tried uninstalling & re-installing flash? If you need help un-installing Flash see http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html. You also could try safe mode. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Safe+Mode .

  • I upgraded to Firefox 25 today and now my Bookmarks menu seems to have additional spacing, requiring a lot more scrolling. How do I get it back to how it was?

    HI I had this issue about 6 months ago, and after a re-install Windows 7 64 bit, the spacing is back in my bookmarks sidebar.
    I've tried this with both dream weaver AND notepad as the text editor, and as well hidden file extensions, which worked last time.
    I've tried adding both:
    @namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
    .sidebar-placesTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row,
    .placesTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row {
    height: 1.3em !important;
    border-width: 1px !important;
    And
    /* Tighten up bookmark tree in Fx25 */
    .sidebar-placesTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row,
    .placesTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row {
    height: 1.3em !important;
    border-width: 1px !important;
    Nothing's working, and after literally 2 hours on this, I'm getting a lilttle verklempt.
    Thanks.

    Please be patient. Tyler doesn't spend all that much time here and the other people who know or can figure out css coding aren't usually around here at this time of day. I can't help you because I am using WinXP that didn't receive that change in Firefox 25 to the line spacing in the sidebar; Vista and later got the changes.

  • The icon moves on my toolbar and bookmarks and all are gone on that version. When I try to open Firefox from my email, it tells me I don't have the latest version, even though I've downloaded it about three times in the last two days. What's the deal?

    First I notice your icon was gone so I figured I'd moved it by mistake. I put it back, but most of my bookmarks were gone. I then noticed I had two icons, one on right side one on left of my Mac. Tried to download new version. Didn't work, went to preview? Weird. Tried the version that's for Yahoo. That seemed to work, my bookmarks were back, but today it says that's an old version and I must update if I want to open something from Firefox from my email. So I did and once again I had two icons on page. It has done this a couple times. So I'm going in circles. I've done nothing new to my less than 3-year-old iMac and have never had this problem or anything remotely like it before.

    Did you manage to get it working mine disappeared after I while I managed to download it but now my laptop/iTunes won't recognise my iPhone!

  • My profile on old pc is corrupted. I can only log in locally with another login. I need to copy or back up my firefox bookmarks. how can I do this?

    I have a copy of my old profile on my old laptop but I can no longer log in as myself. I can only log into safe mode on my computer. I need to copy my bookmarks to my new laptop. I copied the profiles folder within the Mozilla folder in my local profile. I need to know how to restore my bookmarks.

    mcioci said: '''''I copied the profiles folder within the Mozilla folder in my local profile.'''''
    That will not work as your new profile folder has a different name and Firefox will not recognize the old profile name.
    *Having your old profile folder within your new profile folder is simply wasting hard drive space.
    *You can copy whatever files you need from the old profile folder to the new profile folder <u>with Firefox closed</u>. '''''In your case''''', you can then delete the old profile folder that is sitting within the new profile folder '''''OR''''' you can cut that old profile folder and paste to a safe backup place outside of the Firefox new profile folder.
    *To open your profile folder you can use the following menu path in Firefox to open a new window with the profile folder: ''Firefox button > Help > Troubleshooting Information > click "Show Folder" to the right of Profile Folder'' (if using the Menu Bar ''Help > Troubleshooting Information > click "Show Folder" to the right of Profile Folder'').
    Bookmarks and History are stored together in a file named '''''places.sqlite'''''. You need to copy that file into your new profile folder and overwrite the existing ''places.sqlite'' <u>with Firefox closed</u> if you have not added new Bookmarks to the new profile and have no new history that you wish to keep in the new profile.
    If you need other information from your old profile see the following for the file names to copy from the old profile to the new profile. Again, if you have added anything in those new profile folders they will be over-written and the new items will be lost.

  • Lost all bookmarks in my user profile after latest microsoft windows update on 5/15/15

    Last night at 2am when I went to hibernate my computer as I usually do, I saw that there were some automatic windows updates to be installed. Since I have Windows XP and Microsoft has supposedly ceased support, I cancelled the hibernation and got on the internet to make sure that Microsoft was pushing out these updates and what they were for. Everything seemed kosher so I closed the internet and all of my programs, and proceeded to shut down the computer allowing the updates to install.
    Much to my chagrin this morning, I discovered that my user profile had essentially been wiped out. The user profile name was still there and the password still worked, but when I got in the whole profile had been restored to its initial settings. Most of my files that I had on the desktop are gone and when I launched FireFox, it had been reverted to its originally downloaded version (years ago) and all of my many, many bookmarks were gone. I did find some files in My Documents, but the bulk of the documents were not under my documents and appear to be gone.
    I did find some files in a TEMP folder and saved all of those. Fortunately I did back up my computer about a month ago, but stupidly did not back up my bookmarks. I do have a back up from a couple of years ago that I can retrieve, but everything since then appears to be gone. There are many files in the TEMP file that I cannot identify and am hoping and praying that my bookmarks are still in the midst of them. I did a search for Mozilla FireFox profiles through my dos prompt, but it only found a default profile that is likely associated with my admin user account that I generally do not work on for security purposes.
    I have searched all day on the internet for solutions with no luck. I would be most appreciative if anyone can provide some guidance that may be of help.

    Make sure to copy the profiles.ini as well if you copied the xxxxxxxx.default folder from that old Windows account.

  • Firefox won't start; no error message; profile manager also won't start. What can I do?

    Suddenly, firefox won't start. I get no error message--it just won't open. System restore to a month before the problem did not help.
    From the suggestions on this page: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20will%20not%20start... I did not recently install add-ons or clean the registry, so I think it may be a profile problem. But profile manager will not open--only a tiny window with a white rectangle and no text.
    I would like to not lose all my bookmarks. And I would like to continue using Firefox.
    What can I do?

    dmcritchie, thank you for your reply!
    Before I received your response, I tried something that seems to have worked. I used Chrome to go to the Firefox website and downloaded Firefox (without uninstalling it first) and went through the installation process again. For some reason, this worked, even though I already had the latest version of Firefox, and I can now open Firefox successfully.
    If it stops working again, I will try your suggestion. In the meantime, thank you much!

  • Firefox no longer opens, and neither does Profile Manager

    So yesterday some website from a Google search (Kilauea photos search string) did something wacky, and now Firefox 4.0.1 will not start. Safe mode doesn't start. Profile Manager won't start either. Uninstalling Firefox, removing Firefox's folder from Program Files, running a registry cleaner to clean up Firefox leftovers, running a full MS Security Essentials scan which did find some nasty trojans, and then reinstalling Firefox only works for the initial session. A rerun of Security Essentials, and a run with IObit's Malware Fighter find nothing. Once I close and restart, same as in the beginning. Internet Explorer 8 and the 3.7a5pre Minefield version of Firefox seem to run normally other than Minefield fails to remember passwords even though it's checked. Any ideas on what to try?

    I tried Firefox 3.7. I tried Firefox 5 beta. Same thing kept happening. Searches for similar situations just wasn't turning up a viable solution. I may have finally figured it out though. What to do when in doubt? Start doing searches on the processes running in Task Manager. All antivirus programs I have installed have FAILED to recognize this executable as malicious. Look for an executable in your Task Manager that says hdmclean.exe. It will be under ~\users\***\appdata\local. It must be a variant (at least in name) of hddclean.exe. As soon as I terminated the process I was able to launch Firefox 5 beta. I went ahead and deleted the damn bastard, and then rebooted. Seems to have solved the problem as far as I can tell.

  • I have set up my firefox shortcut to go directly to the profile manager. I have had it that way for years. All the sudden it has stopped working

    Hi,
    I cannot get my firefox shortcuts to go directly to the profile manager anymore. I don't know why. I know I have set the target up correctly in properties but it still will not go to the profile manger. Please help.
    Here is what is in the target location in properties:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanger

    Glad all is working again.
    If you have not come across this problem in two years maybe you just do not set Firefox as the Sytem's default browser. If so no need to read any further.
    Just be aware that in some circumstances you will run into problems with the way you appear to have done this. If you try to take an action that opens Firefox indirectly it may fail.
    The action you are trying to avoid, opening another window of the existing Firefox is sometimes essential.
    If you try to use a hyperlink or an HTML file your Windows Vista OS will normally try to use your default browser. That may well be Firefox. If that is the case and Firefox tries to open with -no-remote it will fail if the profile is in use. (Or warn you then automatically close down the already running profile )
    I will quote from another help article
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_a_new_instance_of_your_Mozilla_application_with_another_profile <blockquote>'''Important:''' Never use -no-remote to start the "default" profile (the one that is set to open without asking when you launch Firefox). That's because when you launch Firefox, for example, by clicking a link in your mail program, you will get a [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use Firefox is already running but is not responding message] if the default profile is already in use. The solution is to always start the default profile normally and launch all others with -no-remote. Then it will work.</blockquote>

  • I removed 1 old profile to the d'top, rel. TB, found that it doesn't work so file back to orig. loc. but TB lost e'thing all the same. I still have file. HELP

    Hi, I had 5-6 mailboxes and only wanted to delete the oldest one as I no longer need it. In hindsight this seems to have been the main one as it was the first I installed. Anyway - I thought I had found the solution to getting rid of this mail box as I found it in Thunderbird Profiles where there were two - "pyw8ekrg.default" & "xmw6e2m7.default". I first put "pw8ekrg.default" the bin and then thought better not and so put it back on my desk top. When I relaunched TB I had lost all my inboxes and all my files and e-mails. I thought I would just put the "pw8ekrg.default" back into Profieles and that would solve the problem but even a relaunch of my mac didn't resolve the problem and so I have no longer got access to the folders or any of the mails. in TB. I can of course re-install the mail accounts but will only get a small amout of all the e-mails back. I've tried getting it back via the timecapsule back-up but this didn't help either.
    PLEASE can you help me put my TB back to what it was this morning? Thank you. T

  • When I open Firefox, I'm prompted to create a profile, but every time I click the create profile button, the window opens and immediately shuts.

    I've uninstalled and reinstalled mozilla several times. I've read online about looking for a profile.ini file, that file does not exist on my computer. Everytime I open firefox, the choose user profile box appears, and when I click create profile, a window opens and immediately closes.

    If even the Mozilla folder isn't there then it is possible that Firefox already crashes before being able to create that folder structure.
    Try to do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
    *Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
    *Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
    Remove the Firefox program before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

    Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

    I upgraded to IOS5 and have lost my contacts and other app profiles - is there any way to get them back from the backup taken before the IOS5 process started?

    Thanks but have tried that - When I try to restore I get a -50 error and into a loop of taking another back up.  I took a copy of the back up before the IOS upgrade and have it stored on my desk top but I cannot get Itunes to restore to that back up
    Any ideas how I can do this?

  • Firefox says that my profile is missing or inaccessible. I have gone through every step provided in other troubleshooting forums yet I still can't access. Help.

    I have done ample research trying to fix this issue. Including deleting the profile folder in the Mozilla support file, uninstalling and reinstalling, and restarting the computer. None of this advice has helped in any way and I still receive the same "profile is missing or inaccessible." Is there anything beyond this that I can do?

    If you still get the "profile is missing or inaccessible" error message then this means that Firefox still finds a profiles.ini file that points to a non-existing profile folder.
    You can create a new profile with the Profile Manager if you can't locate this profiles.ini file.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
    If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

  • Can I tweak a Firefox.app to launch with a specific profile?

    I have read http://spf13.com/post/managing-multiple-firefox-profiles-in-os-x/ and https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Multiple_Firefox_Profiles#Using_the_profiles, but neither answers my question:
    I'm on MacOSX, and I have two Firefoxes in my /Application folder: Firefox.app (version 25) and one I have renamed to FirefoxLatest.app (currently version 27). I need Firefox.app to stay on version 25 because of stuff™ in my development environment.
    I want Firefox.app to start with the "lite" profile, and FirefoxLatest.app to start with the "default" profile. Is it possible to add/change something in e.g. Info.plist or application.ini in these app folders so that these apps start with the wanted profile?
    Using profile_manager won't work in this case.

    Hello Hnrk242,
    Thank you for contacting Mozilla Support. You should be able to use the script creation guide in the first link you posted to do what you're trying to accomplish.
    The two scripts should call:
    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p lite
    and:
    /Applications/FirefoxLatest.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin
    Please let us know if this answers your question.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

    seem to have lost my WiFi profile on my Macbook air. How do I create another profile, or get the old one back?

    The profile will automatically be added back again when you connect to the network again. Here, I assume that you have a check mark in the box next to Remember networks this computer has joined.
    If the box is checked and the network does not appear, then there may be an operating system problem with your Mac.
    That would be beyond the scope of what we handle here with the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, so you would want to post in the appropriate operating system community to follow up on that.
