Firefox/Mozilla won't run as normal user [SOLVED]

I have had this weird thing happen, where Mozilla and Firefox wont' work as a normal users.  I fixed this temporarily by allowing non-group rwx access to /tmp, however somehow the problem has returned again.
Has anyone else had this?  I'm not sure what log to check for errors either.  Basically, is starts loading, then exits before starting

seems to be fine here

    hello archers!
alsa on my arch box doesn't work for normal user, just for root. when i attempt to run ogle, it gives this error:

    I've found it!
groups run under user gave just gids of groups, whilst under root it gave proper names. so i took look at /etc/group and here is the problem
    [root@otovo etc]# ls -l group

i've changed permissions to a+r and it's working.

  • Openoffice won't start as normal user --SOLVED--

If you've installed openoffice or openoffice2 and can run:
/opt/openoffice[2]/program/soffice  as  *root*  fine, but as a normal user, experience:
"the application cannot be started. An internal error has occured" or a similar message, then look into the permissions.
I noticed my /opt/openoffice2 directory was owned by some strange user and group # (perhaps the maintainers UID??) and not root.users as it should be. So execute:
    for openoffice1 users
    cd /opt/
    chown -R root.users openoffice/
    & for openoffice2 users
    cd /opt/
    chown -R root.users openoffice/
hope this helps. Forget about the DRI stuff  if that wasn't it
    Brice
    [/code]

I tried it and also got this error.
I removed the .openoffice.org2 and OpenOffice.org1.1.5 directories from my home, ran /opt/openoffice/program/soffice and it worked.
The file  .openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings_Linux_x86.xml in my home directory had root ownership. It might have caused this error. :?

  • FireFox 8 won't run for 2 users at once on Windows 7 after update

Firefox did an automatic update a few days ago. Since that update, if I login to my Win7 PC as me and have FF running, my wife cannot login with her account and run FF - it says FF is already running. Prior to the update, we could each run FF at the same time and switch between users with fast user switching. FF is the only app I have right now that is not working this way.
What happened to multi-user support ?

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
    * Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
    * "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

  • Firefox does not run as normal user

I installed firefox but it won't run unless I su. This is obviously a problem for me, and just about anyone. I tried deleting the .mozilla-firefox folder. I also tried reinstalling it. Nothing I tried has worked.

Ack, there is something wrong with mozilla in arch. I had the same results on several machines and installations. Some files, at least one would be enough, is placed in the wrong place, I guess (considered to be placed in ~/.mozilla, but is in /opt/mozilla/ f.e.), and is set to be root's when you run mozilla for the first time as root. I never took the time to explore it, but I believe to remember I solved this, back yonks, twice by recursive changing permissions of the whole mozilla trees. Would be worth to give it a closer look... Anyway, since then I never touched mozilla based browsers as su, if in need to do such things I use 'links'. Furthermore, if you tweak your users permissions, there is no need to run a gui browser as root (*), as far as I am concerned. Give sticky permission for a "staff" group to write to /usr/src/incoming, f.e, and add your account to the group, will give you what you need to fetch sources as a user, and compile them as root in place. For whatever you will have to fetch, there will be a solution using aglp, acl, what ever you use and name it.
    (*) Exception:
I found out epiphany frequently locks up fetching http://www.archlinux.org if you are a user, but not if you are root. Funny, isn't it?

  • Firefox 4 won't run on my Mac running OS X 10.5.8. The downloaded icon has a slash through it and I get a message saying it can't run on this architecture.

what are the sys requirements for running firefox 4 on a mac? Please put sys requirements on you web page. I couldn't find any sys requirements. thanks

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • [SOLVED] Dropbox - can't run as normal user, but as root

I have problems with running dropbox as normal user. I installed dropbox from AUR. It is successfully installed. But when I type in terminal dropboxd I get:
    WARNING: Cannot write to "/home/USERNAME/.dropbox/dropbox.pid"
I can run dropboxd as root from terminal, but that way default Dropbox folder is created with root permissions in my /home directory. Is there some way to run dropbox as normal user and having Dropbox folder with permissions for my user?

Thanks toad and pickboy87 for advices. It's my fault, and lack of concetration after long hours of staring at screen.
    Solution is this:
    sudo chown -R USERNAME /home/USERNAME/.dropbox
Btw. Ubuntu do all automatically, with Dropbox install, all I need is to follow on screen directions, and next, next.
    edit:
everything works out of the box with dropbox install on other Arch machine i tried, probably I messed something with configuration somewhere before.

  • Photoshop crashes when run as normal user

    Dear all,
Ever since I installed CS4 Suite with Photoshop Extended, my Photoshop would crash as soon as I open a file. This would not happen if I am logged on as administrator on my Windows XP, but any other type of profile has the problem.
I tried: reinstallation, clearing the Photoshop preference file, testing whether some startup service is causing it, and created new user profiles, but neither helped.
Since, I did not have this problem with the CS3 suite, I assume that CS4 tries to do something that only administrators are allowed, but what ?
Anyone with similar experiences or advice ?
    Regards,
    WM

I think I might have found something more. I reinstalled the video driver to be on the safe side. Then ran photoshop as administrator, no problem. Then as normal user and I got the video driver message, as well as a crash when opening a file. Then I ran it again as administrator and it was not complaining about the video driver. So maybe photoshop accesses a part of my video driver that due to file permissions is only accessible to the administrator, any ideas of what that would be ?

  • XFCE4's terminal doesn't keep transparency w/ normal user [solved]

... but it can as a root user.  I can set it to something after I launch it, but after I close it and reopen it, it's 0% transparent again.  It doesn't do this when I run sudo Terminal, so I imagine it has something to do with file permissions somewhere.  Maybe I even saved the settings as sudo'd root at one point in time and set the config file permanently (as far as a normal user is cocerned), but since the file is now owned by root, I can't access it?  I don't know the file regardless
    Any thoughts?

    B wrote:Is ~/.config/Terminal/terminalrc user-read- and writeable?
And owned by you? I usually find it inadviseable to sudo anything that automatically writes config files. Even Vim gives me this problem sometimes (with .viminfo).

  • Firefox 4 won't run on my pc. Had 3.6 no prob. How to get 3.6 back

I have upgraded to 4 but it just shows tool bar and blank page and will not open any bookmarks. I had no problem with 3.6 and want that version back.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
    * Go to [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html Download Firefox v3.6.16] and download it to the desktop.
    * Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
    * Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    * Finally run the installation file you downloaded.

  • Firefox 4 won't run, no solution helps, had to remove and revert to 3.6 which works fine. When will bugs be out of firefox 4. I give up on it. Safe mode, reinstall, etc all never open

on a vista computer running system suite11 for antispyware nothing I could do would get firefox 4 to run. I downloaded it severeal times after uninstalling, closed the previous attempt at firefox.exe to try again and even tried safe mode though none was successful. I used chrome to do most of this that i don't like as well but it works. In desparation i reverted to Firefox 3.6 which installed and works fine now. I cannot figure out what it is that prevents Firefox 4 from running and am done wasting time. I will use the older version and when no longer supported go to IE or Chrome exclusively

I'm having this problem. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I updated to Firefox 4 from 3.6. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but got the same "Firefox has crashed" error. I sent in the report.

  • 10.6.2 SMB - QB 2005 PC won't run in Multi User

    Hi there,
This is a pretty specific issue but i'll throw this out anyway.
I setup a brand new 10.6.2 server alongside our old 10.4.11 server.
I cloned the contents of the "shared data" from the old box to the new one.
We have had the SMB service running for Quickbooks 2005 running on 2 PCs (Xp Pro clients), shared via QB's "Multi User" mode.
The new server's SMB share, identical in permissions etc to the old one, will not allow QB to open the file in Multi User mode. It gives an error to the effect of "Your company file has been damaged". My attempts to repair the QB file had no effect.
If I copy the same company file back onto our old Tiger Server's SMB share, it works fine. I assume this is simply a difference in Samba versions, but I have no idea how to troubleshoot it.
I obviously have a workaround for now, but it's less than ideal to have an entire Xserve on to share a Quickbooks file.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    ~p

Bumped into this article; I'll post back after i give it a shot.
    http://edoceo.com/liber/network-samba-quickbooks
    The gist of it:
"the directories that will be the root of the share must be owned by the group that the users who will access are in and they must be able to write"

I take it that you want X to start as soon as you boot-up ?
If so, your /etc/inittab file needs editing, as 'root'. Here's mine which
    starts KDE at boot-up:
    # /etc/inittab
    # Runlevels:
    # 0 Halt
    # 1(S) Single-user

  • A website switched me from 64 bit to 32 and I'm worried Firefox 4 won't run as fast now... can I switch it back or is that not an issue?

I was on Sirius but before I could play music a popup told me I needed a 32 bit browser to play the plugin (at least I think that's what it said, I clicked too fast). I clicked it and Firefox restarted as 32 bit rather than 64 bit but now I'm worried that I just switched to a slower version of Firefox. Did I? Can I switch back somehow?

It sounds like you are using a program like Audio Hijack, which works only with 32-bit browsers. Running Firefox in 32-bit mode is not harmful, but it might be slightly slower than 64-bit mode.
If you don't want to run Firefox in 32-bit mode, you could try using a different browser when you run Audio Hijack, or you can disable Audio Hijack if you don't need it.

  • AMSN won't run - error from Tk (solved)

Hi, I recently installed AMSN, but when I try to run it I get the following error:
    [jack@Jackington ~]$ amsn
Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationunknown color name "Black"
Does anybody know what this problem is? I have reinstalled tcl, tk and amsn but to no avail. Perhaps it is a problem with the package, in which case I might file a bug report, but I don't want to do that if it's not necessary. Maybe someone could try to install and run amsn and see if they get the same problem? Then we will know it's a bug.
    Thanks very much!
