Firefox Multimedia wiki may be wrong

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi … a_playback
I couldn't get HTML5 video completely enabled in Firefox proceeding per the wiki page, getting these problems https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179594 (start reading from the latest posts) so I've mentioned it on phoronix. A person involved in some multimedia coding chimed in saying this, among others:
Gusar;n801765 wrote:
Well, two things here:
First, it seems gstreamer-vaapi is extremely buggy. I've seen tons of reports about issues when it's installed for months now. Especially when it concerns web browsers, but even with dedicated gstreamer-based media players, such as Totem. Also, you have a wrapper involved there, which only increases the bugginess of everything. Don't use wrappers, r600 (and radeonsi) has native VAAPI support now - which means, instead of installing libva-vdpau-driver and setting LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=vdpau, you install libva-mesa-driver and set LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=gallium
Second, maybe it's just me, but I have the feeling Mozilla doesn't care about gstreamer anymore and is transitioning towards using ffmpeg directly for h264/aac, and internal libraries (libvpx, libvorbis, libopus) for webm. Which I must admit I like better, I've always regarded gstreamer as overkill. The one thing I'd like though, is the ability to use system versions of libvpx/libvorbis/libopus instead of the Firefox internal versions. Or better yet, just use ffmpeg for everything, ffmpeg's vp8 and vp9 decoders are much faster than libvpx.
Considering these two points, your workaround to disable the use of gstreamer in Firefox would be the absolutely correct thing to do.
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/so … post801765
I'm a noob, so I'm not pointing out an error. Merely suggesting the section might need to edited at least not to suggest the gstreamer.

I'm using the stock firefox and when I click on an html5 YT video, 'Stats for nerds' shows I'm viewing a video/mp4 mimetype file.
https://www.youtube.com/html5 shows that MSE is not supported, but H.264 is.
Edit: Onboard Intel graphics.

  • Since i updated to Firefox4 i can no longer save tabs on closing - searched help - says settings may be wrong but no suggestions how to fix. i tried the "corrupted files" change and that didn't work either.

Why don't my tabs save anymore when i close Firefox. I'm not asked to save and i want to! i've tried looking in the help database and it does suggest settings may be wrong but does not offer any suggestions to fix.

You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
    Another possibility is to use:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
You can set the warn prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page to <b>true</b> via the right-click context menu or toggle the value with a double left-click.
    * browser.showQuitWarning, see http://blog.zpao.com/post/3174360617/about-that-quit-dialog
    * browser.tabs.warnOnClose, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/About%3Aconfig_entries
    * browser.warnOnQuit , see http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.warnOnQuit
    * browser.warnOnRestart , see http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.warnOnRestart
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

    Hello there, Kyle.Kuz.
The following Knowledge Base article that provides some helpful pointers to help resolve your issue is:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Specifically:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Message: You can't open the application Firefox because it may be damaged or incomplete

I've been using Firefox for a long time. Today I decided to change the settings to delete my history when I closed the window. Now when I try to open up Firefox I get a continuous pinwheel. I deleted Firefox from my computer and reinstalled, but it still won't work. There's now a grey icon titled Firefox with a square and a circle and line through it. When I try to delete this icon, it won't let me, saying Firefox is still running. When I try to open the icon, I get the following message: "You can't open this application Firefox because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Any suggestions on what to do?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 27: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPad fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Lost internet connection via time capsule, wireless signal grayed out. What may be wrong?

My mac mini started intermitently losing connection to the Internet. Checked settings, look OK, no changes. Wireless signal icon in the menu bar is sometimes full sometimes grayed out (no connection at all). Other computers connecting via the same Time Capsule without any problems. I've serched forums and tried some suggestions to no avail. My mini is core 2 duo 1.83 GHz, 2GB RAM. Snow Leopard up to date.
    What may be wrong?

Well, I reset the TimeCapsule to factory settings and configured it again for my home network and all works like a charm again.

You are correct, there is no flash player on the iPhone, find an alternate browser that may be able to help your quest.
Or use the corresponding app in the App Store.

  • Firefox generates a lot of webtraffic. What may be wrong?

My Firefox regularly generates a lot of web-traffic. While not page is apparently downloading, it continuously downloads something with speed around 50-60,000 B/sec, as the Resource Monitor shows. When I make it work offline, the traffic stops. I don't think it is updates. I can't really say more as I have no clue what may be the reason. Thanks.

  • Used tip in fonts wiki; wrote to wrong file, need to see the original

one night while bored i decided to use the lcd packages mentioned in our fonts wiki.
wiki wrote:The "fontconfig-lcd" package enables by default the "lcddefault" filter. You can edit the /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-lcd-filter.conf file and replace it with another filter.
i accidently misread this as /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-lcd-filter.conf.  everything went smoothly (no loss in functionality or anything) but i randomly starting seeing an error while doing some tasks (like for instance, installing the cmatrix package)
    paraphrased error (can't remember exactly):
error wrote:Error in /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-lcd-filter.conf.  Invalid constant "lcddefault".
this was when i realized i edited the wrong file.  but i don't know what to put it back to.  i've tried "none", "default", and "lcdlegacy".  "lcdlegacy" silenced the error while installing cmatrix (found that out while trying to get the error syntax for this post).  but i _did_ pop up during some other task i can't remember now... i swear.  all choices will randomly pop up that same error during some random task.
if someone's got the lcd-filters installed as per our wiki, can i see your conf.d/10-lcd-fonts.conf so i can put mine back?
    many thanks
    also, interstingly:
    > pacman -Qo /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-lcd-filter.conf
    error: No package owns /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-lcd-filter.conf
    > pacman -Qo /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-lcd-filter.conf
    /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-lcd-filter.conf is owned by fontconfig-lcd 2.6.0-1
should i just remove it?  i feel like the error message would read differently if the file shouldn't be there all together... but i'll be happily corrected on that.
    edit: typos... as usual

no, i want the fontconfig-lcd package... plus it doesn't own the conf.d file anyway, as per the pacman output.  i just edited the wrong file and wanted to know what it looked like before i did that (i.e. on a default system).  my post may be a bit confusing, i apologize.
i've removed (and saved) the file, we'll see how that goes...

  • I cannot access my mail from the Comcast main screen, firefox says it may be a problem with having deleated cookies.

From the Comcast main screen, using FF 3.6.13, when I click on my mail to get it, I get an error page that says Firefox has detected the server trying to direct my request to the wrong place and that it may be because i have deleted cookies. I had in fact done this while looking around the other day, but now, under tools, it says I am allowing cookies and I found a list that looks like they are all there. I am unable to get my mail, but am able to go to other web sites ok.

Your problem is typical of the many problems reported with McAfee, and that may well be the cause. McAfee is free with Infinity but isn't built-in in the sense that you have to take it. Is your previous anti-virus still installed? If so, you should get rid of one of them anyway, and the usual advice here would be to ditch McAfee.
Even if McAfee is the your only AV I would replace it. If your previous AV is no longer available there are plenty of free options, and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is as good a choice as any. There's advice on uninstalling McAfee here.

  • Firefox shows table cell heights wrong

When I preview my page using Firefox my cells with text in
them are messed up the height of the cell is higher then it is set
to be, way higher. But when I preview in IE the cells are at there
    correct height.
The empty cells display fine but when I put text in them it
leaves a big margin above and blow the text like I had put a
paragraph break above and below the text or even two paragraphs.
I checked the padding and its set to 0...but like I said in
    IE it shows up correct.
    Any ideas??

That'd be the ticket. The difference between those first
    three cells and
the rest of them is that only the first three cells have
    content wrapped in
    <p> tags.

  • Firefox loads website in the wrong tab when I click a link and change tabs.

In Firefox when I open a new tab and type in a webpage or click on the homepage button, then change to anoter tab while I wait for it to load, it will load the site in the tab I've switched to instead of the tab that I initially put the address in. This is annoying as it replaces whatever I was working on when it incorrectly loads the new page in the wrong tab. I have a fairly slow internet connection through my phone's hotspot, so it can take a long time to load pages, which is why I try to load something in one tab while working on another.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Firefox opens flash content in wrong size and bad quality.

I created flash content (virtual tour) in fixed size 800x600. There is a script which opens the content in new window but Mozilla opens just a cropped part of it. Even after maximizing the content the flash remains still cropped. There is also a problem with images inside the content because they are played in low quality. Other browsers do not have this problem and also screens with higher resolution (desktops) show it correctly on Mozilla.
