Firefox no longer opens

For the last 4 months I have used Firefox 3.5, and as of today when I click on the firefox icon in the dock it does not open?
And because I am new to Apple, I have no idea how to remove firefox to be able to re-download it.

Open Finder and navigate to Applications. Double-click Firefox from the list. does it launch? Replace the icon that was in the dock with the current one that launched on the right side of the dock.
If this does not work. Delete Firefox in the Applications folder and download a new version. Drop to Applications folder, if this still wont help, navigate to Users/Home/Library/Preferences and delete org.mozilla.firefox.plist. If that does not work also move or delete Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Firefox folder. And try also Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Mozilla folder. Move these to the desktop before deleting. These store all your personal info and will have to be rebuilt if they are deleted.

This evening I upgraded to Yosemite. Now Firefox no longer opens, even in Safe Mode. If I try to open FF, I receive a Mozilla Crash Report. I uninstalled and reinstalled FF, made no difference. Can anyone help?

This is the crash report. I do not understand it.

• After adding plug-ins to block ads, my firefox no longer opens--it hangs/freeze--i have tried to restart, even deleted firefox and downloaded a new version--to no avail! please advise--

Last night I aded a few plug-ins to block ads including Google's--after restarting my computer (Mac OS X 10.6.8), my firefox no longer opened, i.e. it hangs/freeze when I open it--I have tried to restart, open in safe mode, even deleted firefox altogether and downloaded a new version, to no avail! Please advise! I have been trying to revive Firefox for hours today--

Hey rumon,
Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "option" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read Troubleshooting extensions and themes.
There is also a lot of useful stuff in the Firefox crashes Knowledge Base article. If you've recently upgraded, you might want to check out this article as well.
Hopefully this helps!

• Hi, I'm an eBay seller and save old eBay auction files to my hard drive for future refence. Firefox no longer opens these files correctly (see below).

Hi, I'm an eBay seller and save old eBay auction files to my hard drive for future refence. These files which all use the same name but are saved in a different folder for each eBay auction no longer open correctly -- much of the eBay auction text information shows up for a split second and then disappears -- the area at the top of the saved eBay auction file then collapses -- the original eBay auction photo of the product shows up as well during that split second but disappears when the other auction text disappears. These eBay auction files open correctly when opened using Internet Explorer. In Firefox, Firefox adds some strange information at the end of the file name when it is opened which is not a part of the actual file name itself (i.e. here is the original file name which is the same for whatever ended eBay auction I open: eBayISAPI.dll.htm -- here is the altered file name after Firefox opens it: eBayISAPI.dll_files/eBayISAPI_data/eBayISAPI_002.htm#ht_658wt_1349 -- yes, it is that long -- the last part is slightly different for each separate auction file that I open). None of this happened until recently. The files open this way whether using Firefox 4.0, Firefox 3.6.16, Firefox Safe Mode 3.6.16, and Firefox Safe Mode 4.0.

Here is what I did:
1) In Firefox 4.0, I opened the Bookmarks on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. I clicked on the Import and Backup menu. I then exported all my bookmarks to the PC's desktop using the default file name BOOKMARKS.HTML.
2) In Firefox, I opened the Add-ons menu under Tools on the Menu Bar. I clicked on the Prnt Scrn key on the top right of the PC's keyboard in order to obtain a screen shot of all the Firefox add-ons. I then opened Microsoft Word and pasted the screen shot using the Control V command (Ctrl V). I then saved the Microsoft Word file on the PC's desktop for future reference.
3) I then opened the Control Panel in the Start menu (accessed from the little Windows world globe on the bottom left of the screen -- the operating system is Windows 7).
4) In the Control Panel, I opened Uninstall A Program in the Programs section.
5) I uninstalled Firefox 4.0 clicking on the box "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" in order to remove whatever bug in my Firefox customizations was causing the two errors above (this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART of this whole process which is why I saved all my bookmarks as an HTML file and saved a screen shot of all the Firefox add-ons).
6) I then reinstalled my old Firefox 3.6.16 version obtained from the following link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html (I am not yet in favor of using Firefox 4.0 -- you suppose you can reinstall Firefox 4.0 on your system if you want).
7) After Firefox 3.6.16 was reinstalled, I had to import all my old bookmarks. Under Bookmarks on the Firefox Menu Bar at the top of the screen, I clicked on Organize Bookmarks. I then clicked on the Import and Backup menu and then the Import HTML command in order the BOOKMARKS.HTML file saved on the PC's desktop.
8) I then re-added all my favorite Firefox add-ons by clicking on Add-ons under the Firefox Tools menu and then clicking on the Get Add-ons command. I then searched for all the old add-ons I wanted to re-add to Firefox using the Microsoft Word document on the PC's desktop saved with the screen shot of all the old Firefox add-ons on my system by I uninstalled Firefox 4.0.
9) I then opened one of the old eBay auction page files saved on my hard drive under the eBay default file name "eBayISAPI.dll.htm". The file opened perfectly with NO missing sections and no missing original eBay auction listing photo! the file looked exactly like it did as if I was logged into eBay and looking at the original ended auction.
10) I then opened Hotmail in Firefox and received NO "update your browser" message! I was able to open all my old emails and write and send new emails (with all my Contacts being automatically detected when I went to type in the email address of the person I was sending the new email to)!
In summary, you need to uninstall Firefox 4.0 being sure to click on the "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" box during the uninstall process. Be sure to save/export all your old bookmarks before the uninstall process and make a note of all your old add-ons. Then reinstall whatever version of Firefox you are comfortable with. Apparently, my Firefox customizations had become corrupted at some point; removing the Firefox customizations during the uninstall process allowed any future Firefox version installed on my PC to start over with a clean slate (these corrupted settings would show up in whatever version of Firefox I had installed on my PC so removing them during the uninstall process was the key to solving all my Firefox bugs). I hope my suggestions help to solve your problem and good luck!

• As of this morning, Firefox no longer opens .doc files

Firefox 5
At first I thought it was a problem on my machine, but then tried firefox on a completely separate computer and have the same problem.
As of this morning, Firefox no longer sends .doc files to Word. It asks whether you want to save or find a program to open with. This is only firefox - the files open fine in explorer and all other browsers. And being this just started today on two completely different machines, the problem must be firefox in some way.
The .doc file extensions do not show up in Options > Applications.
Files do not open up directly from a website, or from the "Downloads" list. The same files opened fine yesterday.
VERY aggravating - I have to switch to another browser to work.

• Firefox no longer opens on my computer.

Firefox refuses to open on my computer, as of this morning. Everything functioned perfectly yesterday, but when I opened the computer this morning, Firefox would not come up. Internet Explorer works, but Firefox suddenly does not. I attempted to fix the problem by uninstalling Firefox and then reinstalling it, but a box kept coming up saying the that uninstall could not progress until I closed Firefox--even though there was nothing onscreen to indicate that Firefox was working. I finally shut the computer down, closing Firefox, uninstalled the program when I brought the computer back up, but I still have the same problem--no visible Firefox. What gives and how do I fix it?

• Firefox no longer opens my Football tv service.

I pay for a subscription tv service from Leeds United FC called LUTV. It used to open and work with no problems but now when I use the LUTV link it displays a message telling me that my browser no longer supports the tv sevice.

There is a fix for Dreamweaver, so it works in Firefox 3.6+ versions:
http://solutions.marketingmedley.com/
There is a $5.00 fee for that Dreamweaver fix. That website and the fix are not associated with Mozilla in any manner. Support for that fix is provided by that that website via email.

• Since upgrade FireFox no longer opens with last session, how do you this version 4?

Previously when using Firefox 3.6 I could have multiple tabs open and when I closed the browser, the next time I opened Firefox it would reopen the same tabs.

Tools or Firefox > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

• After reset my Firefox no longer opens web pages automatically when I type the keywords in the Location bar. How do I fix this?

Before I reset my Firefox I was able to just type words in the Location bar and Firefox would redirect me to the website. For example, typing "reservoir dogs imdb" would redirect to the IMDB page of this movie, and typing a random sequence of characters would take me to (for example) a website of some company that uses these characters as the abbreviation of its name.
I never set this option anywhere, it was just like that for quite a long time. Now this possibility is gone for me and I can't seem to fix it.
I use the laters Mozilla Firefox 21.

Starting with Firefox 23 the keyword.URL pref is no longer supported and it is no longer possible to specify the search engine for the location bar that way (keyword.enabled still works to disable this search).
The search engine that is used on the location bar and on the about:home page is the search engine that is selected in the search Bar on the Navigation Toolbar.
You can install the Keyword Search extension to specify with search engine to use for the location bar and which search engine to use for the about:home page via the Options/Preferences windows of this extension, accessible via the about:addons page.

• Firefox no longer opens, and neither does Profile Manager

So yesterday some website from a Google search (Kilauea photos search string) did something wacky, and now Firefox 4.0.1 will not start. Safe mode doesn't start. Profile Manager won't start either. Uninstalling Firefox, removing Firefox's folder from Program Files, running a registry cleaner to clean up Firefox leftovers, running a full MS Security Essentials scan which did find some nasty trojans, and then reinstalling Firefox only works for the initial session. A rerun of Security Essentials, and a run with IObit's Malware Fighter find nothing. Once I close and restart, same as in the beginning. Internet Explorer 8 and the 3.7a5pre Minefield version of Firefox seem to run normally other than Minefield fails to remember passwords even though it's checked. Any ideas on what to try?

I tried Firefox 3.7. I tried Firefox 5 beta. Same thing kept happening. Searches for similar situations just wasn't turning up a viable solution. I may have finally figured it out though. What to do when in doubt? Start doing searches on the processes running in Task Manager. All antivirus programs I have installed have FAILED to recognize this executable as malicious. Look for an executable in your Task Manager that says hdmclean.exe. It will be under ~\users\***\appdata\local. It must be a variant (at least in name) of hddclean.exe. As soon as I terminated the process I was able to launch Firefox 5 beta. I went ahead and deleted the damn bastard, and then rebooted. Seems to have solved the problem as far as I can tell.

Firefox no longer opens PDF files. Explorer works OK. I have checked the Applications window in the Tools/Options and it says I am using PDF-xChange viewer....It just does not do anything. I get the message in the Download Error window which says...."could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Is the same error which I get when I attempt to open a PDF file on a webpage using the Firefox browser....Explorer works OK so I am now forced to Explorer to read PDF files via a browser.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== After removing a old copy of PDF-xChange Viewer and updating to the last version

The error message suggests that the file (pdf) that you're trying to download cannot be saved in the folder Firefox tries to save it in.
This can be due to several things - it could be a non-existing folder (could be a problem with the updated application), the hard drive could be too full to store the file (less likely if you can generally surf the net without error messages) or it could contain an error.
To complicate things a little further, it seems to me that you have (at least) 3 different PDF-handling plugins in Firefox from different programs:
PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.3.2"
Zeon PDF Plugin For Mozilla
This shouldn't matter too much, thou, as it will most likely simply use either the latest installed or the first one it finds when looking up associations for files of type 'pdf'.
First, in Tools > Options... > tab General > section File download, select "Save files in" and Browse your way to a (non-writeprotected!) folder on a drive where you're certain there is enough free space - like the Desktop folder to make the files end up on your Windows desktop.
Second, under Applications as you mention yourself, find all document types related to PDF files, and set these to one of the programs. Check the entire list to be sure there isn't one hiding under one of the other programs' document types (Adobe Acrobat document, PDF X-Change and Zeon).
Restart Firefox, and try opening a PDF again.
If it fails once more, try changing the documents again to one of the other programs, like "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)".
If it STILL fails, change it to simply "Save file". Then you can simply browse your way to the download folder with Windows Explorer, and doubleclick the PDF file to see which program actually handles PDF files as default on the machine, and if it works properly.
If Firefox flatly refuses to save the PDF files in a folder which you're certain both exist and has space for the file, some (probably security related) program is most likely interfering with Firefox, preventing it in storing PDF files on the system.

• Firefox has stopped opening the browser tabs I set

I defined my home page as https://www.google.co.uk/|https:uk.yahoo.com/ Firefox no longer open on this but instead opens a new tab.
Can I correct this by resetting values in about:config. If so what values do I have to change?

Hi Aldhelm2,
I understand that you have two pages that open up as a homepage, however I am not sure if you have set it up to open two pages or just. Nonetheless I have provided the steps to change the homepage and the new tab via the about:config entry.
It sounds like a setting was changed on your new tab page. I understand that you would like to know how to change the home page back as well. Below are the instructions on how to change the new tab page if you need to change this as well.
# In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
# Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
# Type browser.newtab.url in the search box to find it on the list.
# Double-click on browser.newtab.url and type in about:newtab in the window that pops up.
Restart Firefox and open a new tab to make sure the change was made. To change the homepage:search for browser.startup.homepage and doubleclick on the entry to enter the url.
Please post back with your results, we are happy to help.
