Firefox not default browser when browser not open

I know how to set a default browser settings in Safari, but here's the problem. I have Firefox/Mozilla and unless I am using it and have it open, my computer uses Safari as my default browser. When I open Safari (with no Firefox pages open) and go to the applications list to choose default browser, Mozilla/Firefox is not listed anywhere. I notice when I do open Firefox browser, it opens up like another drive, not in the applications list, but in the drive list where it shows Mac HD etc, creating it's own finder folder and everything, not like an internal application. I think this is why Safari is still set as default browser if I haven't opened Firefox. Once I open Firefox, then open Safari, I can select Firefox, it shows it in the drives window, not applications. So the problem is, if I have not opened Firefox and I click on a link in an email, Safari opens up and not Firefox. Is there a way to get Firefox recognized as an application and pull up in the applications list without it being open?
Thankyou.

You have not installed Firefox. You are running the application directly from the disk image you downloaded.
Double-click on the .dmg file that contains Firefox. The disk image will mount on the Desktop. A Finder window will open automatically, drag the Firefox icon from the window to your Applications folder. Eject the mounted disk image and delete the .dmg file (or archive it somewhere.)

My Firefox v6.02 browser always open *.csv (comma delimited) file in another tab rather than downloading a file? I do not have right click option to save this file. My OP is windows XP sp2.

    Hi mha007,
    Go to this site "http://www.nseindia.com/content/indices/ind_histvalues.htm"
Select any Index type and from dates select just one day or any number of days. Click "Get Details" button. This will open tabular data on loaded page (with link CSV file link at bottom).
When I click this link, it opens CSV file in new tab (in Firefox browser) and does not open download window (just as in case of other file formats like *.zip, *.rar or *.xls).
Right-click of link does not give "save as" or "save file" option.
Firefox is my preferred and default browser.

surprisingly, When I do same thing in IE6 browser, data-table page shows 2 options below table, i.e. (1) download file (2) open file.

  • How do you make Firefox the default browser when the normal way doesnt work?

Im trying completely from chrome after a friend showed my how much firefox has got its act together. However i cant for the life of me set it as the default browser. I have tried the "make firefox the default browser" button in firefox, which simply opens the windows default programs panel. Whenever i try to use the panel it simply sets the http protocol to nightly which isnt even installed!( http://puu.sh/2vJHM ) I think a possible fix would be to manually change the registry, but i wouldnt know where to start.

Did you check the box on ''Options > Advanced > General >[X] "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup"?
Have you restarted Firefox and if so, or when you do so, what does that section on the advanced Firefox options show?
Have you tried restarting your system after setting the default browser using the second suggestion and, after restart, check the setting per the second suggestion to see if that setting is holding?
Updating your Plugins would have no affect on the default browser question. It was something that you needed to do to avoid security issues online by using an out of date version of Java. Java is not involved in the default browser issue. That is why I separated it from the first part of the reply with a line and began with the word "Other".

OK when I change over to Safari - but going back to Firefox same issue.

    any suggestions?

I have the same issue. One interesting piece of info is if you quit FireFox (go to dock > right click on firefox icon > quit) Mail will then launch the link into FireFox properly. Somehow though users actions must cause it to fail again. My wife uses our iMac more than I do for email, so I haven't been able to re-create what she is doing to lose the Mail > Firefox functionality. Almost sounds like an OS X bug??

  • How do I make Firefox the default browser in a non-administrative Windows XP account, where clicking to do so has no effect?

I have two accounts for myself on my PC running Windows XP. In the administrative account, Firefox is already the default browser that opens when I double-click an HTML file, etc. Firefox knows it's the default browser there.
In my other account, every time I start Firefox, it tells me it's not the default browser. Clicking there to make it the default, or in the options, does nothing.
When I go to Set Program Access and Defaults in the administrative account, "Use my current Web browser" is selected. Mozilla Firefox is not listed as an option. In my non-administrative account, the Add or Remove Programs control panel can't be used. It says I don't have permission.

To check that in the other account you would have to give it temporarily administrator permissions.

I would like to set Firefox as default browser via the command line in Mac OS X. The goal is to enforce Firefox as default browser for all users of a Mac OS X system by means of a login script. I am also looking for a way to add Firefox to the user's dock from a login script.

Launch Safari and open its preferences. You set the default browser there.
Not very logical is it? I think a Microsoft plant came up with that one.

After virus problem which would not let all parts of the browser page open, I downloaded Firefox from another browser and opened it to install.

Mozilla Firefox stores all your personal settings, such as bookmarks, passwords and extensions, in a profile folder on your computer

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Netscape mail wont use firefox as default browser even though set up as default browser in firefox.

I want to continue using Netscape Mail 7.2, but when I click on a web link I want it to use Firefox browser. I set Firefox as default browser in Firefox options, but it is not staying set when I look again. I don't know if Netscape is resetting it or what.
    Please help.
    Thanks,

I had the same problem, I just forgot how to fix it. I did it once a while ago but just recently the problem had returned. The first link in vineelreddyp's post solved the problem for me.
Just as an FYI for people, when OSX does software updates it includes Safari updates. When it completes a Safari update it resets all the Safari settings (they recently upgraded to Safari 5.0), including default browser.
So anyway, FYI about that. ;-)

  • Can't Make Firefox My Default Browser

I like Safari just fine but I want to make Firefox my default browser, OK? OK. Good.
Now then, how do I tell Safari to STOP being my default browser?
I have Firefox installed on the Mac and in its preferences, it thinks it's the default browser.
So I went to Safari's preferences to make sure it doesn't still think IT's the default browser, but it does. So I went to the "general" tab under preferences. I see "Safari" as the default browser. I click the drop-box to choose a different application. Only "Firefox" is not listed anywhere among the applications.
I installed Firefox from one of those "hard drive" like icons on my desktop. It runs fine from an icon in the dock. But near as I can tell, it's not listed among the applications on "Macintosh HD/Applications" directory. I suspect getting it listed there is going to be the first step in solving my default browser problem.
So, what do I have to do to get "Firefox" listed among my applications, and then what else do I have to do to get it to be the default browser?
    Thanks,
    --PS

    No problemo, sorry about that.
There is also a "Firefox.dmg" file on my desktop... I can tell that's not a .app, but... what is it exactly?
The .dmg file is a disk image file. That is the format a lot of programs you download will be in. Some open by themselves to reveal the .app file some you have to double click.
Double click on the firefox.dmg file. That should bring up a window that has a file called firefox.app. Right click with your mouse if you have one and drag it to the applications folder in your finder window.
If you do not use a mouse put your cursor over thefirefox.app file. Now hold down the trackpad button and the ctrl key. Now you can use the trackpad to drag the file to the applications folder and drop it there.
I prefer to not have any programs on the desktop. I like to use the dock to hold my favorites. Then the ones I don't use very often I just open from the applications folder.

OK I'll post there also but I'm aware of the preferences section in Safari... thing is, when I choose to make Firefox the default browser, it resets back to Safari when I turn off the computer and turn it back on. Everytime. And it does my head in
I heard of a program called More Internet that I heard could help slove the problem but I can't understand how to use it, nor is there any forum or any way to contact anyone who knows. It's driving me up the wall.
So I'm hoping there's another way that someone in the world knows.

Not Adobe Reader related but I'd like to add the following:
To set firefox as default browser
Firefox: Tools - Options - Advanced - General (tab) - System Defaults - click Check Now (button) and click Yes when prompted.

  • How do I make Mozilla Firefox my default browser?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 that I not only had to use my insurance on after only 4 months and get another one BUT then they decided to update it to this "New Lollipop" software!!!
The irony to all of this is, I'm not a computer and an Android tech savy person at all!!! I went from an iPhone to the Samsung because of well....it was an economically better choice- more GB, almost the same apps if not better or darn close, and last but not least CHEAPER :)

  • Unusual firefox not opening problem

I clicked on a thing in facebook, I exit firefox, go make a tea. Come back click to open firefox again, it looks like it wants to open but nothing, no message or window at all. It fails completely to open at all. I then proceed to do a virus check, nothing. I then do a complete uninstall which went surprisingly well and hassle free then a complete re-install. Upon re-installing, it says extracting 0% then the window closes and again just nothing. Ive tried a full system resotre to a few days previously but that failed as it said nothing was there. Admitadly im a pretty techno-phobic 18 year old(gimme the vinyl anyday!). But I really need mozzila back because Internet explorer has none of my bookies or tabs. Hellpppp!!!

    Hi,
It is possible that some extensions prevented proper closing of Mozilla Firefox. You may not be able to close Firefox properly due to extensions like Skype 4.0, Norton Toolbar and Norton IPS. Thus, restarting of Firefox is being prevented. You need to remove these extensions to fix the issue. At first, you need to open up ‘Process’ tab of Windows Task Manager and select the firefox.exe entry and click the ‘End Process’ button. You need to continue the steps until each additional firefox.exe processes are stopped. You can now start Firefox and in the Add-ons menu and open the Extensions panel. Here, you need to disable Norton IPS, Norton Toolbar and Skype 4.0. After a clean restart of Firefox, you will get the issue fixed.
