Firefox now uses Yahoo as default engine in address bar. ow to return to Google?

Since FF 8.0 typing in the address bar returns a Yahoo search and it is absolutely hopeless, the results bear no relation to the search terms.
Using the search box to the right (Google default) is perfect.
I have altered the about:config listing and removed Yahoo! and Bing, replaced with Google but the address bar still uses Yahoo.
My ISP is BT, owner of Yahoo, but this hasn't happened before 8.0.
Chromium is unaffected so presumably only a Firefox issue.

Hi Myglaren,
Take a look at the Knowledge Base article Location bar search. It will give you instructions on changing the key word search provider used in the location bar.
If that doesn't work, you might want to take a look at Preferences are not saved.
Hopefully this helps!

• How do I change default search engine in address bar?

I know in previous incarnations of Foxfire I could use about:config and change Keyworld.url to change my default search engine. I recently reset my Foxfire because I've been having issues with the Origin website and.. now it's defaulted back to Google. I do not want to use google. How do I change this? I do not want a search bar, I do not wanna change things in a search bar. I just want the address bar to work the way I've always had it work for me before. Can ANYBODY help me?

That does not help me at all. I do not want the Search Bar. I don't wanna change the default on the search bar. Why would ANYONE want a search bar when the address bar does the searching for you?
I want to change the default on the ADDRESS bar. The main bar and only bar I have. The one that if you type in anything, it automatically searches Google and there seems to be no way to change it. You could change it before by going to about:config and changing Keyword.url, but Foxfire removed that. Now.. I want to take the Address bar off it's default of Google and switch it to something else.
Once again, I want NOTHING to do with the Search Bar. I don't want it, don't want to change what it searches, nothing. I never use it and never have. I want to change the ADDRESS bar's default search.

• How to make google default search engine in address bar.

How do I make it so that when I search with my address bar it ALWAYS uses Google, regardless of what search engine is selected in the search bar? It used to be like this, but a recent Firefox update altered it. Now, when I search with my address bar it uses the search engine selected in the search bar...if I wanted to do that, I would just use the search bar! Any suggestions?

I'm also having this same problem... it's the first thing that Firefox has ever done that's made me contemplate getting a different browser. The "update" seems like a step back, and a removal of a very good feature. I'm in the same boat of wondering if there's any work-arounds or add-ons to restore the old usage, even if it comes at the risk of having my address bar's search engine occasionally hijacked.

• Firefox will not allow me to use my Enter button in the Address Bar or Search bar

locking as a dupe of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/941775
I installed Firefox today and as of yet, I haven't been able to use the Enter button in the address or search bar. I can use every other key except that one. Thus, it makes Firefox unusable and useless. Can anyone help me out? I even went as far as disabling every single addon that came with the default installation of Firefox and uninstalling my AVG. Nothing has worked.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems article.

• After resetting firefox, I can no longer search from the address bar

Like the title says I can't search from the address bar "awesome bar" anymore. I just get a 404 error when I try. Searching just lists tons of people getting the "just update keyword.url" answer that's no longer valid. And hasn't been for several years.
I got a browser hijack somewhere. Not sure where, and nothing was installed on my computer so I reset firefox and lost all my search engines. IE was fixed with an uninstall/reinstall. Chrome hates my face and no longer runs. (And google's help is... well if I wanted to be insulted...) I've reinstalled several times. No dice. I've now reset firefox three times. It's just not working. I've ran several virus scanners, ran several malware programs, and even asked my IT department. (They don't care cause IE works and their stupid "virus scan" was clean. I mean it took 30 seconds. What the hell did it actually scan?)
Surely there's a keyword or something that I'm missing that needs to be reset so I can get my address bar searching again.

Current Firefox versions use the default search engine that is set in the search bar as well for searching via the location bar and on the about:home page.
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extension (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

• Firefox 31.0 EV-Certificate not showing green address bar in some cases

I'm on vacation, using a public (non-password protected) wifi connection in a hotel.
My bank's website is using an Extended Validation Certificate, hence the address bar should be green. Yet, right now, the address bar is no longer green (but it does show the lock icon). I checked some other TLS sites and, for example, https://www.verisign.com/ does show a green address bar.
I also checked in Internet Explorer, which does show a green address bar. I compared the version and fingerprint for the certificates in Internet Explorer vs Firefox and they match.
Is this a known issue?
If not: has anything changed in Firefox 31.0 that could result in this?
Cheers,
Refund.
P.S. Yes, I contacted my bank, their advice is to download and install Google Chrome because: 'Their experience with Chrome is better than with Firefox.' and see if the address bar stays green.

What do you see in "Tools > Page Info > Security" if you click the padlock and click the "More Information" button?
Are there any other icons on the location/address bar like a shield or exclamation mark?
If there is a shield icon to the left of the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location/address bar then that means that mixed active content is blocked.

• How do I get Firefox to display the full URI in the address bar?

I've seen this answer, but it doesn't fully fix the problem: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/951487
When I look at the address bar, I want to see the actual URI of the page I'm on, not some mangled version of it. In other words, I want to see the address in the form that is valid in an <a/> tag in XHTML.
Setting browser.urlbar.trimURLs to false fixes HALF of the problem, but not all of it. If I type in "http://example.com/filename%20with%20spaces.ext", I should see "http://example.com/filename%20with%20spaces.ext". However, I instead see "http://example.com/filename with spaces.ext". The "%20"s are converted into spaces, which are not valid in a real URI. How do I fix the address bar to show the real address of the page?
EDIT: It seems to me that if someone sets the trim setting to false, the URI should not be trimmed in ANY way. This includes the shortening of %20 to a space character. Is this a bug?

If it prevented the use of similar-looking characters, that would make sence, but it doesn't. Normally, the URI can only include ASCII characters. Any other character must be encoded. Due to this change, encoded characters are shown in their decoded form, CAUSEING URIs to be able to look like other URIs. Now that you mention it, this actually has the opposite effect as what you mentioned, and is actually a security problem. That's just one more reason why this issue should be fixed.

• Version 29: Address bar is filled with static Firefox icons. Unable to type URL in address bar.

I've never seen this before and cannot find a solution in support or in a general Google search.
We have a user who has an address bar filed with static Firefox icons (there is a screen shot if there is any way to provide that). If the user clicks on them, they go nowhere (they shouldn't be there anyway, right?). This user is unable to type anything into the address bar, either. Not certain if there was an auto-update to version 29 overnight or not, but Firefox was uninstalled a fresh version of 29 installed - the reasoning being it might have been an installation issue. The issue still remains. This user is not having the same issue with Chrome. Have not tried reproducing it with any other browser on that machine. Have not heard any complaints from other users in the office using version 29.
Is there some setting that is being overlooked with version 29? Is it a bug? Should we try installing version 28 and see if it's a versioning issue or perhaps something else? Trying to eliminate possible issues and move onto the next set of solutions.
Thanks,

Note that you can find an RSS feed icon in the Customize palette (3-bar Firefox menu button).

• First I realized my Google bar, in the top right hand corner of the home page, is gone... but now I can't even find an address bar. So if I want to put in a website address, there's nowhere to put it. Can anyone help?

I think I said everything I needed to in my "Topic" comment. Thank you for any suggestions

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I'm not running 10.5.8 and it's been a while, but in your browser (Safari, right?) click on the word 'View' in the top menubar and you should see 'Show Toolbar' right at the top, as well as other choices. Clicking 'Show Toolbar' should restore your 'address bar' back to the way you expect it to look.
Some websites purposely open a new window without any 'distractions', such as to play video clips. If you close the original window, you can be left without the familiar tools.
'Customize Toolbar' also lets you drag other defined buttons to add functions you use frequently that usually require navigating the menubar. I added a 'Print' button that was not part of the original set, for example.

• How to safely remove version of firefox that uses the system default locale?

I have Firefox with Greek locale due to my location.
I want to use Firefox in English, so I downloaded the English version and installed (in another HDD).
I've already set it as a default browser, and thus, clicking at the firefox quick launch icon opens the english locale version.
Now I would like to clean my system, simply removing the greek locale version (located at C HDD) but without losing any data/extensions/etc.
How can I do that?
Thank you for your time.

Installing the English (en-US or en-GB) version over the top of the Greek version would have been easier as that would have been replaced the Greek language pack (located in the omni.ja archive).
You can check the general.useragent.locale pref on the <b>about:config</b> page to make sure that it is set to the correct en-US (or en-GB) locale
If you have the Greek version listed in Control Panel > Programs then you can uninstall this version here.<br />
Make sure that you aren't removing your personal data when uninstalling as this will remove all Firefox profile folders.

In Thunderbird I seem to be able to enter partial account information but then I invariably cannot go further. The only utililities I have installed are those I have used before without problems. The present version of Windows has a popup utility that asks if you want a particular program to make changes to your machine. This is new to me (at least I think it is part of Windows). Again no such problem with other programs -- key board works fine.
