Firefox on a MacBook Pro

I don’t think this is the ideal forum for my question, but this is the only forum I’ve ever used, and I always seem to find a solution here.
Today I started using a new MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.6). I used the Setup Assistant to transfer files, applications, and other information from my old Mac to my new one. I’ve had some problems (e.g., Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional doesn’t appear to work), and the one that is bugging me now involves Firefox.
On my old machine (G4), Firefox would open PDF files (i.e., I didn’t have to download them and read them with Preview or Adobe Acrobat . . . Firefox would read them). Now that isn’t happening, and I don't know how to get Firefox to do it again.
When I go to preferences/downloads and click “View & Edit Actions...”, I can change or remove an existing action, but I can’t figure out how to add a new one. Since the actions listed are for .png, .doc, .ppt, and .xls files, I don't know how to get Firefox to read PDF files.
Can anyone help?

Hello,
1. Is this (what I just described) how it is supposed to work?
Turns out that it works that way on my system as well.
I use Safari Primarily. So, I was going by standard behavior problems to answer your question. I only use FireFox if I need to.
But, the response you get now, is exactly how it behaves on my PowerPC Mac right now when using FireFox.
I found this statement at:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/OSX.html
Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 ships with a browser plugin, but it does not work with Gecko based browsers.
The plugin is installed in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the Library Folder automatically. The best course of action at this stage is to delete it, and tell Adobe Reader not to check for it using the Adobe Reader Preferences.
If you need a plugin for viewing PDFs, you will need to use the PDF Browser Plugin, which is free for non-commercial use.
The alternative PDF plug-in that they mention is at:
http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/
Now, it is also still a PowerPC program. So, you will need to leave FireFox in Rosetta mode to use it.
2. Is there a way to avoid the extra click (i.e., have it open in
Preview automatically)?
Yes, before you click on the "O.K. Button" put a check in the box that says to do this automatically from now on.
Hope this helps.

  • I'm unable to do a clean install of Firefox 6 on Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.8.

I'm unable to do a clean install of Firefox 6 on Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.8. After trashing the firefox.app from the Applications folder and trashing a related file in the Library folder and then reinstalling, all of my previously opened windows and tabs reappear. And the history and bookmarks are populated too! Then, the computer freezes up so that I must reboot. Because these windows automatically open and the history and bookmarks are populated with my old history and bookmarks, I believe this is not a clean install. Please help.

Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

  • I've been using firefox for my macbook pro for the last three years but lately when it starts up, I hear a strange piano chord play. Have others experienced it?

Only recently has Firefox for my macbook pro been acting strange when starting up. I will hear a piano chord play only once when the tabs are loading. Over the past two-three weeks on daily usage, this has happened three times. I'm just concerned my macbook has a virus/bug or if this can be resolved with changing a preference/setting in Firefox. I don't believe this is a problem with my computer itself and I have checked the notification alert sounds and none are the piano chords I'm hearing. I am currently using two add-ons: Tabs-mix plus and FVD Speed Dial if that helps.

Does it happen when you start up in Safe Mode?
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
    * Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. # Question
When I try to download the new version of firefox my computer (MacBook Pro) tells me I don't have enough priveleges to carry this out

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • How do I uninstall Mozilla Firefox from my MacBook Pro?

I want to uninstall Mozilla Firefox from my MacBook Pro and am not sure how to go about it.  I am looking for specific, step by step instructions.  I have not tried anything yet (other than to try to find instructions on You Tube)
    Thanks for your help!

Since the "FREAK OpenSSL bug" in the Mac which has been making the news over the last couple of days doesn't apply to Firefox but does affect Safari and other Mac browsers, you might want to hold off uninstalling for a bit. But if you must, drag the Firefox application to the Trash. Next, locate your Firefox profile in /Users/your user name/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles and drag that to the Trash too. Then empty the Trash.

  • How do I get Firefox on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.8 after two very frustrating and time consuming attempts?

Tried two times to get Firefox browser downloaded to my brand new MacBook Pro with OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) with no success. First attempt I was using a wireless internet connection. I got through the first couple of steps but then I could not see the Firefox application in my Applications folder. Second time I tried I used a hard-wired internet connection. This time I got absolutely nothing after clicking on the green Download Firefox icon. I patiently waited a full half hour after clicking the green download button but still nothing. What do I have to do in order to get the Firefox web browser on my brand new MacBook Pro with OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion)?

Were you able to download and save the DMG (disk image file) for Firefox?
If there are problems with updating or permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (DMG) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 16.0.2: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Trash the current Firefox application (e.g. open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the Firefox disk image (DMG) file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.<br />
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

  • After installing firefox 4 on macbook pro, firefox 3.6 comesback

First, we love Firefox! However, even though I've installed Firefox 4 repeatedly on my Macbook Pro, OS X 10.6.6, when I close my session by clicking "Quit Firefox" , I get back Firefox 3.6.16 next time I open Firefox. I.e., Firefox 4 doesn't replace 3.6.16 permanently after the initial session is closed. This never happened with other updates. Please fix! Thank you :-) Suzanne

Answer to this is to use Finder to go to the Applications folder and then drag the old Firefox to the wastebasket. Then try installing the new firefox again and it should work.

On my Macbook Pro and Firefox 31.0 , Bing crashes, rolling a grey shade down my screen, forcing me to

  • I use Firefox. My MacBook Pro is pretty low on space. I've been told that Chrome is a "lighter" browser, therefore my Mac might run faster with Chrome true?

I am trying to unload applications I do not need and moving video/pix files to other storage locations

hello hlascarro, i don't think that the sentiment that chrome would be "lighter" than firefox can be considered valid - i'm on windows, so i cannot say if it's the same for mac too, but the chrome install-folder here takes nearly triple the amount of disk space than firefox (138MB vs. 50MB) and in numerous browser comparisons firefox was generally also using less RAM resources...
