Firefox on Ubuntu Linux won't open PFD files (opens blank tab)

Running Firefox in Linux (Ubuntu 13.04).
When I click on any file (or email attachment) that is in PDF format, Firefox opens a blank tab and will not display contents.
I saw a similar question for Apple PCs but it doesn't work on Linux and neither does the Windows fixes. This has only begun with the last udate to Firefox.
Unfortunately like most people, I did the dumb thing and update then went nuts loading add-ons so it could be an add-on and not just the update.
The same issue is occurring on thre PCs (AMDS and Intel) - one on Mint and the rest on Ubuntu

Problem solved - it was caused by an add-on called "PDF Download 3.0.0.2)
To fix - in Firefox :
Click on '''Tools''' command (top of screen)
Select '''Extensions'''
click on "'''disable''' button beside '''PDF Download'''
Close Firefox and restart it.
Clicking on any pdf file should open a new tab now and the document will appear there.

  • Why won't some pdf-files open on tablet/phone?

I simply get the error saying: The document cannot be opened because it's not a valid pdf-document.
However I have no problems opening the file with my laptop, only my phone and tablet (Jellybean 4.2.2) won't open it.
My friends also have managed to open the file on their tablets (android/windows).
Have reinstalled and checked updates and tried other programs but none has worked for me.
I simply have no clue and would appreciate help.

    Hey,
Seems like the problem was in the web browser I was using, as the file just
    didn't download correctly.
Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated.

    Hey,
spent some time discussing this with some friends of mine and found out
that the document can be opened by downloading it to the computer and
transferring then to the tablet or phone. The difference is that when
downloading with tablet/phone I get a .pdf file, which only has some html
code. So I guess the problem has something to do with the encryption of the
file. Here are the 2 different files I get as attachments. After all this
might not have anything to do with adobe, but some other stuff I don't
    really understand.

I have an iMac. , mid 2007.  Frequently, when I take an action, the little color wheel starts spinning and goes on for quite awhile.  Save a file, close a file, open a file, open a window, it's all random.  Somtimes it stalls, sometimes it doesn't.  Sometimes long, sometims short.  Why is this happening?

Consider adding more memory. Be sure you have adequate free space on the hard drive - 15 GBs or 10% of the drive's capacity, whichever is greater. Do not run too many applications concurrently. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving the SBBOD.
    Do some maintenance:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • Why won't movie trailer files open in Quicktime

Each time I try to open a movie trailer file in my Quick time pro I see a down load window with a small X box at the top left hand of the window.
Why won't these files open. When I go to the same files in Itune Store I have no difficulty downloading and playing

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, but nobody gave me a reply. I don't know if it helps in your case, but I eventually found out it was my firewall blocking the download.
I could view SD trailers but not the HD ones for some reason.

  • Why won't my imovie file open?

Please someone help me!! I am doing a school project and as I was about to upload my project file from imovie to my desktop, the whole thing shut down. My file is lost, and I can only find a corrupted version of the file, which is probably an earlier version, and it won't open. How do I get back my finished project?
I have tried deleting the preferences and opening the corrupted file in bbedit and so far, nothing has worked. My computer says it is opening the file, as the properties have changed and it shows a more recent time that this file has been opened.
If anyone could help, that would be much apprectaited!
    THANK YOU!!!!

Essentially the same thing. I double click on the Adobe Shortcut on my desktop, and it opens up for a minute, the blue circle spins and then it just closes. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, downgrading to adobe 9.4 and nothing seems to work.

  • Whenever I start Firefox it opens 10 windows with blank tabs

Every time I start up firefox it opens 1 window with the open tab from my previous session and 9 more windows with blank tabs.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and all open tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?

    What is a raw file?
A raw file is the unprocessed light data that was captured by your camera sensor. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any settings you may have applied to the file, such as white balance, or black and white effects, have no effect. Because this sensor data is raw, it must be processed or baked into an actual image file, that's where the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in comes in.
    What is Adobe Camera Raw?
ACR interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update ACR for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras. Additionally, with the changes to ACR, newer releases will not always be compatible with older versions of Photoshop Elements.
So, will the my raw files work with Photoshop Elements?
So if you are wondering if your camera is supported by ACR or will work in Photoshop Elements, first check this list:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Once you know whether your camera is supported by ACR and by which version, check this list to see whether your version of Photoshop Elements supports that version of ACR or later:
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
If your version of Photoshop Elements should open raw files from your camera, make sure you have the latest version of ACR installed. Go to Help > Updates to install the latest ACR release.
You can also manually download and install ACR updates:
    Macintosh
    Windows
What if my camera is not compatible with my version of Photoshop Elements?
Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Photoshop Elements, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:
Purchase the latest version of Photoshop Elements that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Camera Raw plug-in). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.
Where are all of the tools and options that I've seen available in tutorial books and videos?
Photoshop Elements has fewer tools and options than it's parent Photoshop. These differences are documented here:
Adobe Camera Raw differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

    Hi Joshua ,
I would like to know few things before I assist you any further.
Which version of Android are you using?
What kind of PDF file it is?
Try uninstalling the app once and they try to reinstall .

  • I was able to open pfd files before my computer was shut down by a power outage, once power was returned I am unable to open pdf files

I was able to open pdf files before I had a power outage in our area, once power was restored I can not open pdf files.

Chrome uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin.
    To change that see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html
However, Google seems determined that in the near future only their own plugins will be allowed on Chrome...

  • Why won't the responses file open when I receive a submitted form

Hi all,  We have recently started to use Acrobat Pro X for editable pdfs.  When training was done (all work contained was created on our server) the responses file opened as it should when a submitted form was received.  Now trying to use these forms "live" the response file doesn't open.  The wording to double click the file and select the response file is in the body of the email of the submitted form but instead of the response file opening the form opens.  Anyone have any ideas??

It does seem to be happening to all forms received.  We are using Adobe Acrobat X Pro to create the editable pdfs.
When you ask "being used to save the forms?"  do you mean from the person submitting the form back to me?   If that is the case then Acrobat X also.

  • What is the difference in PS E12 between 'File Open' and 'File Open in Camera Raw' ?

Both routes launch a screen saying Camera Raw 8.3 - Canon EOS 5D Mark III?
Likewise on this screen there is 'Cancel' and 'Done' Buttons', what is the difference both close that screen.
I am assuming the 'Done' Buttons saves any manipulation of exposure or colours you may have made? and the 'Cancel' just forgets them?
Is there a manual for this product; that one can reference, screen by screen? explaining what each option actually does.

    Chucky-Tiger wrote:

If you are opening a raw file (.CR2), both routes are identical, because you have to convert raw files in ACR anyway.
If you are opening a jpeg file, you can open the file directly in the Elements Editor (Open),
    or
you can open it the the ACR module. The dialog is the same (or nearly) as for raw files, with the same sliders and features, including some you don't find in the editor : clarity, advanced denoising...
There are advantages in opening jpegs in ACR, especially because ACR works internally in 16 bits and in a wider color gamut. Very important for me is the fact that the ACR modules saves its edits as 'recipees' in the metadata section of the jpeg files, without changing any pixel value of the original.

Cancel does cancel every edit you have started. You are back to the original file.
'Done' saves your edits, as you rightly assume.
'Open' saves the edits and send them to the editor for further editing if you want, for local retouch or using layers for instance.
'Alt Open' does not saves the edits, but sends the edited result to the editor.
'Save' is only used if you wish to convert the raw files to the DNG format.

  • Opening a file opens welcome screen

This sounds silly and is not stopping me from working but is starting to get annoying.
When i right click or click to open a file in Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver opens and shows the welcome screen. The file is not loaded so i have to go back and click again where it is loaded after a seconfd attempt. This only happens if Dreamweaver hasnt already been open.
I have tested this with other Adobe applications and files open on first time around - what is the issue with this? I know its a small issue but is really starting to annoy me!
I am using CS6 if this helps.
    Thanks,
    Charlie

The effect is called 'the recurring welcome screen syndrome' and is caused by the friendly gremlins that constantly affect our daily computing lives.
My apologies, but I couldn't help laughing at your predicament while still sympathising with you.
On a serious note, have you tried clearing the DW cache?
If that does not work, you may like to try renaming the Configuration (e.g. Configuration-1) folder. In this case you will have to re-configure DW including re-installing your extensions. A bit of a bummer, but it helps me on many an occasion.

and in forms 6i i have a display item namely Filename and besides a small button is there , when the user presses the button then File open dialog should be displayed and the user should select the image file and that path should be copied into display item. then automatically the Image file should be reterived in pics( as my Image block is db block).
and when the user reterives the data, the existing images in the table should automatically come.
I have searched in the forum, but very much confused about the WEB util package.
IF possible send me the steps to configure the WEB UTIL for 6i or 9i or 10G.

  • Ubuntu linux won't boot from cd

I just downloaded an .iso file from linux and burned it with disk utility. When I restart I hold option to boot from the cd but it goes to this screen with a refresh arrow and a continue arrow and the fans are blasting. I cant click anything either. Im not very familiar with dual os boots and im probably doing something wrong. =Im looking for help from someone who has booted ubuntu on an imac g5.
    Imac G5 iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2Ghz 160GB HDD 400Watt Yamaha&JBL Sound System

To startup from the cd press and hold the 'C' key during start up. If this doesn't work the cd may not have burned properly or is not bootable. I have the newest version of Ubuntu (Dapper Drake - 6.06) and it comes on a dvd not a cd, so double check if you have the correct version...
You may not want to install ubuntu yet anyway - both ubuntu and yellow dog linux don't have thermal control measures for the G5 (the fans are at full at all times, which is very annoying) and broken sound drivers. They also have beta versions of the airport extreme drivers, so may not work for you. Furthermore, there is a big problem with ubuntu crashing at the login screen on G5's because of a sound conflict with esd - there is a work around, but I am having difficulties with it, so i can't verify whether it works or not. Yellow Dog is useable, but still pretty annoying because of the fans. All of this is unfortunate because these are the two most popular versions of Linux for the ppc. I have heard that Gentoo Linux for ppc is ok - you may want to try that if you just want to get to grips with a Linux system.... is there any reason why you want to use Ubuntu?
