Firefox opens tabs without request

Firefox opens a new tab without doing anything and brings up random sire like Hulu, MSN, Yahoo, etc.
Does any one know what may be causing this and how to stop it? It just started after upgrading to 3.6.9.

This type of behaviour can be caused by malware. Try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:
* [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Malwarebytes]
* [http://www.superantispyware.com/ SUPERAntiSpyware]
* [http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Ad-Aware]
* [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Windows Defender]
* [http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html Spybot S&D]
You can also check to see if an add-on is causing this, for details see the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.

  • Closed Two Separate Instances of Firefox - Open Tabs and All Groups Lost

I had two instances of Firefox 16.0.2 open and closed both with the "X" box at the top of the window and shut down windows. When I opened Windows XP this morning I came up with only one of the two Firefox sessions with the tabs restored and lost all the groups I had created over the last year.
The original groups are important to me, the tabs less so.
I was able to recover previous versions of sessionstore.js from the profile directory for Firefox and have the several days prior of them.
I saw in other postings of similar nature that the information is in the sessionstore.bak or a previous deleted sessionstore.js. I've attempted to figure out the procedure for running scripts but I don't think I'm getting it. When I open sessionstore.bak in notepad I can see the links that were in the groups that I'd like back.
    My questions are:
1). Can & how do I restore the groups? (I'm not understanding the procedures I saw in: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=10768811&start=45)
2). Are the tabs gone? How do I restore them?
3). Is having two open Firefox windows a no-no for keeping groups and tabs remembered?
4). How do you backup groups so if things go south you can recover easily?
5). How many tabs can you safely have open in Firefox?
6). Any other hints or procedures I should know about.
    Thanks!
    Ron

Did you check if there are entries in History > Recently Closed Windows ?
App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder, so if you have a backup copy of a sessionstore.js that has those tabs then you need to check that.
If you close a window via the close X on the title bar then you only close that window and all pinned tabs and tab groups that you created in that window will be gone (each window has their own tab groups and pinned tabs).
Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar to make sure that you do not lose tab groups.

  • Firefox open tabs not displaying content

    Firefox 34.0 beta
I open Firefox.  The tabs are there...the favicons are there and URL titles...just not content...see screen capture.
BTW, EVERYTHING I try to open is DOG SLOW!  Even in Safari opening URL is painfully slow.

I confirm the same.   I reported the issue.
You can roll back to mavericks with time machine until it is resolved if you have a TM backup.

  • Firefox opening tabs in new window

Whenever I "open in new tab" Firefox will open said tab in a new window instead of the current one. If I repeat this four times with the same link in one window, I will have four tabs in one new, separate window. I'd rather have those four tabs in the original window.
I do have the "open new windows in a new tab instead" option selected.
Probably just a setting I have flipped to the wrong position, but any help would be appreciated.

This could be due to the way Firefox 4 handles windows popped up by a script in a web page. In some cases, Firefox judges the window to be a "dialog" and diverts all new tabs to a different window.
When you encounter this can you do the following test: Copy the URL of the "problem" window, open a new normal window (e.g., Ctrl+n), paste the URL into the location bar, and press Enter. Then try right-click > Open Link in New Tab in that window. Does it work normally there?
If so, it's the dialog problem. This thread has more information: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/813647 How to allow tabs in dialog boxes again? | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help].
If not, it must be something else.

  • Why is bottom 1/3 of Firefox open tab screen "blocked" while composing long email in Hotmail, unless I reload the webpage or change to Full Screen mode?

As a Hotmail email that is being composed gets longer and longer, the text suddenly disappears (behind what acts like a pop-up that is blocking the lower 1/3 of my compose window). Experimenting on 3 July I discovered that "Reloading" the compose screen overcame this problem. Also selecting "Full Screen".
(IE does NOT have this problem.) By "Compose" I mean composing a new message, replying or forwarding an existing message (with my comments being added before). The full message (that was saved as DRAFT or previously sent) can be seen, but just going into a "compose" mode causes the bottom of the message to "disappear". The right-hand scroll bar also disappears behind the - you can see whereas

Sorry "dmcritchie", I do not understand your solution, especially
    " Gear(tools) > Options > more Options> Reading Pane options >"
since this does not match the Tools > Options under the Firefox window.
(Tools > Options shows a "Gear" symbol labeled "Advanced"; I'm running XP on a Dell Inspiron).
I don't ever remember configuring a "Quick Viewing" window (I prefer to open each message manually or delete it unopened), or configuring Read Panes - unless if was a default setting in Firefox 5. (Come to think of it, Firefox 5 became available early last month and that's about when I started noticing this issue. Luckily I don't recall it happening with Yahoo email accounts which I use more frequently, or even gmail ones.)
Thanks for the tip: "..to view a message without it activating anything bad, right click on the message or envelope and choose "View message source" .." - This right-click option is new to me - and I can see not only the sender but also the content. (Is it totally safe, since one can see the content without physically opening it?)

  • Firefox opens tabs after I have shut down and reopen

Each time I open Firefox, the program opens multiple tabs that I had searched and reviewed a couple months ago. I have attempted to properly log off Firefox. I have also uninstalled the Firefox program and all its components and then reinstalled the program. I have met the same results. All the tabs reopen each time I open Firefox. I have been happy with Firefox and would hate to have to give up on the program. Please help me.

Hi Janine, do these tabs only appear at startup or do they also appear when you open a new window using Ctrl+n or when you double-click the Firefox desktop shortcut a second time?
''If they show up with Ctrl+n AND every time you use the desktop shortcut:''
You might have accidentally made those tabs your home pages. You can view/edit/reset your home page(s) in the Options dialog. These articles have more information:
    * [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
    * [[How to set the home page]]
''If they show up whenever you use the desktop shortcut:''
These pages might somehow have been added to the shortcut's "target". You can check that by right-clicking the shortcut > Properties, then on the Shortcut tab, the Target should be the following with nothing after it:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
''If they only show up when Firefox starts up:''
Firefox may be set to restore a previous session. Normally this shows windows and tabs from your most recently closed session, so it's strange that you get older ones. If you always want to start with your home page, you can make that change in the Options dialog. This article points the way:
    * [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
    Does any of that help?

  • How do I save the open tabs when I close Firefox 5? There should be a dialog box opens that asks if you want to do this. Without it I will stop using Firefox.

This was available in earlier versions and was a great feature. Please restore it or give us a workaround.

It seems that they decided to disable this feature by default for some reason. In your address bar, type in "about:config" and search for browser.showQuitWarning" in the filter, without quotes. Double-click this string to set it to "true." Firefox should then ask you if you would like to save and quit, or just quit, when exiting with multiple tabs opened.
Another option is to go to the "General" tab in your preferences and and under "Startup" -> "When Firefox starts," select "Show my windows and tabs from last time" from the drop-down list. This way, your opened tabs are always saved, and always restored.
Finally, you can achieve this functionality (and more) with the Session Manager add-on. Session Manager is nice because it allows you to save and restore multiple tab sessions. I also find that it's a more reliable fail-safe for saving your opened tabs when it comes to browser crashes.

  • How to access the options tab without opening firefox in windows 8.1?

Recently moved from Windows XP to Windows 8.1. Used to be able to access the Firefox options tab via a context menu by right-clicking the icon in my Start Menu without having to open the browser window, which was useful for selectively deleting cookies, etc, after a browsing session.
Is this functionality still possible in Windows 8.1? If so, how? Or is this just another Windows 8 annoyance?
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
That does indeed do the job!

  • Does Firefox has this option (which I may not know) to click on my bookmark, link, etc. where to open a new tab without doing this right-click, it is aggravating?

Hello, I would like to use Firefox as my default browser, but the reason I still use the old Netscape Navigator is that that clicking on my bookmarks Firefox is not opening new tab. Does Firefox has this option (which I may not know) to click on my bookmark, link, etc. where to open a new tab without doing this right-click, it is aggravating?

    Install the addon
Open Bookmarks in New Tab 0.1.2010043001.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-bookmarks-in-new-tab/
    Restart on installation.

  • I have nine open tabs and suddenly, without warning, Firefox will open another nine tabs, duplicating the nine I have open and sometimes I see 2 sets of duplicates (27 open tabs) or more. What is going on and how do I prevent this?

My first open tab, my home page on my.yahoo, doesn't get duplicated, but all the others do.

If you click "Use current pages" then all currently open tabs become multiple home pages.

  • Why won't my Firefox open with my home page instead of a blank tab?

The browser always opens in a new tab even when I have it set to open in my home page. When I have Firefox set as my default browser it opens in a new blank tab when I click a link in a document or email. The only time I get my home page on opening Firefox, is if the browser is already open and I choose to open a new window. However, when I do that I lose my yahoo toolbar settings for the newly opened window. Yes, I have tried removing cookies, and that does not work. This problem is exasperating, I do not like IE, but I use it because it opens links without my having to keep the browser open all the time.

Hi tigerleatoo, I'm not sure I understand your question.
When you launch Firefox using its program icon, you should get your preference from the following tab:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > General > "When Firefox starts"
So in your case, you should see your home page(s).
When Firefox is completely closed and you launch it using a link in email or a document, Firefox usually will ONLY open that linked page and nothing else. Are you getting a blank tab in addition? Do you want your home page in addition?
Is the problem that you want external links to open a new window when Firefox is already running?
Firefox tries to follow your preference for new tabs vs. new windows for both internal and external links.
In other words, if you have set Firefox to open new windows in a tab here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Tabs
Then external links will usually open in an existing window rather than in their own window.
There is a way to split these so they behave differently, but because the steps are detailed, I won't burden you with those unless you need them.

  • Stop firefox opening multiple update tabs automatically

Hi there I'm having trouble with firefox opening up auto update tabs by itself. When you are on any site after about 5 seconds a new tab opens requesting you to auto update my video player. Then 5 seconds later another tab opens saying the same thing. and again. and again and so on perpetually. If left unattended for two minutes 85+ tabs will have opened. I am running firefox 30 on windows 7. I have found a temporary fix is to reset firefox. This works for a few days and then the update will occur 5-10 times in a session and then stop. Then a few days later it reaches critical mass and hijacks firefox, tab after tab after tab.
I would like to have gotten a screen shot but the reset lost the tabs. I don't think the problem will have shown in the troubleshooting diagnostic (mainly due to the reset). I have gone through my history and have managed to get the common URLs of the tabs.

I thought if I downloaded the file and ran it then the messages would disappear. The file was a media player file associated with multiple advertising addons that would be installed if you did a typical install. I did a custom install and only installed the player. This did not stop the problem. The tab thing remained. I have uninstalled the program. The problem existed a few weeks before I did this so installing was not a trigger for further attacks.
I have discovered that resetting firefox also breaks a few links. I have to re-allow popups and re-enable my java plugins. I am enrolled in a tafe course and it also runs a diagnostic. This is what it checks.

NoScript stops cookies, please disable this addon/extension as well as make sure that the language en-us is installed.
    # 1) Open up the Firefox Preferences tab. You can do this by typing about:preferences in the URL bar.
    # 2) Click "Content"
    # 3) Next to "Languages", click "Choose"
    # 4) Select "English/United States [en-us]", click "Add"
    # 5) re-open "about:accounts"
    # 6) Click "Get Started"

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately, I already did all of these things. As you can see from the below screenshot, the language is already set. Also, this screenshot was taken in Safe Mode, so NoScript is not enabled. About:accounts still says I need to enable cookies for some reason. So, this solution didn't work....
