Firefox opens two icons in dock when I launch it. Why?

Whenever I launch Firefox 4, two Firefox icons appear in my dock. Why does this happen and how can I have just one icon launch? I'm using a Mac.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== I installed Firefox 4 on my iMac

It doesn't seem to affect performance. It's just annoying to have the two icons load.
Hope it's fixed by Beta 2.

  • When link in email is clicked, firefox opens two windows.

    I have XP Sp3 and firefox 9.0.1. I use outlook 2003 for email. "Open new windows in a new tab instead" is checked. When I click on a link in email, firefox opens two windows. The first opened shows the link and the second opened shows a blank "new tab". Clicking the link again causes the second window to open a second tab displaying the link. The first window stays the same.

    That is this bug:

  • Is a Windows registry error responsible for Firefox opening two browser windows whenever I use a hyperlink from a Word file?

    Whenever I use a hyperlink from an MS Word document, Firefox opens two windows instead of one. The first window is the one I need. The second contains a message that the page could not be found and the address bar contains the URL appended with "Firefoxhtml/shell/open/command".
    This problem is similar but NOT identical to one in MozillaZine headed "Windows error opening internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox". But none of the solutions in that article work for my problem: I've disabled all extensions but that hasn't helped. I've tried editing file types so that the DDE is removed (I'm not a teccie so have no idea what that means), but after following the instructions to the letter it doesn't seem to remove the DDE. Also I read that removing the DDE is not a good idea for people like me who need to open numerous firefox browser windows at one time. Furthermore, the MozzilaZine article refers only to problems opening a URL link in a MS Outlook email when Firefox is NOT running. My problem concerns the opening of URL links in MS Word when Firefox IS running!
    I've run countless different virus programmes, rootkit checkers etc but they all come up blank. However, I did come across guidance on this website: http://antivirus.about.com/od/windowsbasics/a/shellopen.htm which suggests that something may have altered the shell open command for two registry keys used by Firefox.
    # HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\shell\open\command
    # HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htfile\shell\open\command
    The default value for each of these should be "%1" %*. But on my user, the default value reads:
    (for htafile) c:\windows\system32\mshta.exe "%1"%*
    (for htfile) c:\programfiles\windowsNT\hypertrm.exe"%1
    What should the value be for these two files?
    Can anyone sort this for me please? Bear in mind I'm not a teccie!

    Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.<br />
    You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.<br />
    Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.

  • Firefox opens two windows when I open the browser

    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

    I had the same problem.
    Solved it by starting Thunderbird in a safe mode (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode), closed it and started normally...
    Thunderbird showed 1 window afterward... I did play around before that with disabling/enabling extensions but at the end the safe mode helped... Hopefully this helps someone :)

  • Firefox opens multiple icons in Win7 Taskbar

    Here's the problem in action: http://www.screenr.com/Usps
    Basically, when I put FF on my Taskbar, then open it, it opens another icon with FF in it. I'm very confused.
    I've set Win7 taskbar settings to only display 1 icon, and I've made a shortcut directly from the firefox.exe

    It doesn't seem to affect performance. It's just annoying to have the two icons load.

  • How do I stop the "Meet Mozilla Firefox" page from opening in a second tab when I launch my browser?

    Since the latest update, every time I open my Firefox browser, it opens two tabs. The first tab is a "Meet Mozilla Firefox" tab and the second is my Yahoo! homepage. How do I stop the meet mozilla tab from opening and only have my yahoo homepage open?

    Refer to this help article on [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How%20to%20set%20the%20home%20page?s=home+page&r=0&as=s How to Setup the Home Page].
    If this still doesn't work, do the following:
    * in the address bar type "'''about:config'''";
    * click the button "I'll be careful I promise";
    * in the bar type "'''browser.startup.page'''";
    * right-click on it, and change the value to "'''0'''";
    * re-start your browser.
    Hope this helps.
    Edit: just changed formatting.

  • External storage icon comes up when I launch MSN messenger?

    When I launch MSN an icon representing an external storage device always comes up on the desktop. Why is this happening? It also happenes when I launch Firefox.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi, Steve. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. Have you installed the MSN Messenger and FireFox apps within your Applications folder, or are you running them from within disk images you've downloaded to your desktop? What you describe almost sounds like you're opening a disk image on the desktop, which mounts the image as a virtual hard drive ("storage icon" per your description).
    1.1. What's the name of the "storage icon"?
    1.2. What happens if you double-click the "storage icon"? For example, I'd expect it would open in Finder, so what is contained therein?
    2. You might want to search or post on the "Microsoft Messenger for Mac" group you can find on the Microsoft Mac Support - Newsgroups page. These are Google Groups with active participation from MS product users, including a variety of expert users.
    I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but I've found numerous answers there for folks with questions related to MS products. Accordingly, it has often proved to be the first, best place to look for answers to questions such as you are asking.
    Good luck!

    Try to undo and redo Firefox as the default browser.
    Make another browser like IE the default browser and then let Firefox do it again.

  • Firefox opens multiple times (many windows) when click once, even after a reinstall in Windows 7.

    There really isn't much more to say, except that the situation occurs even after restarts.

    The cause is most likely the preferences file in your profile folder. That file contains your personal settings, so it doesn't get deleted when you reinstall/update Firefox. The reset feature also retains your preferences file.
    Instead of doing a mass delete of all your settings, you can try identify the culprits and reset them individually.
    # In the [[Awesome Bar - Find your bookmarks, history and tabs when you type in the address bar|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
    # Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''', to continue to the about:config page.
    # Click on the '''Status''' column, to sort your preferences by status, and group all the ''user set'' preferences together. They should appear in bold.
    # If you see any preference that look suspicious, just '''right-click''' on it, and select '''Reset'''.
    If you're still not sure which ones to reset, you can post most of them here easily. Go to '''Help > Troubleshooting Information''' then click '''Copy text to Clipboard'''. Open a reply to this post, and go to '''Edit > Paste''' to paste the info from your Troubleshooting Information page.

  • My browsing sessions are being hijacked as Firefox opens some pages. Started when updated to v20.

    Open pages spontaneously change to random advertising sites. happens a lot to yahoo home page. does not appear to happen in IE10 or chrome. also there is a pop-up box showing up at the bottom of some pages asking if I want to go to some ad on the page.

    Sounds suspicious. You may want to run some supplemental security scans. These two tools are highly regarded:
    Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
    SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/
    Meanwhile, within Firefox, disable ALL newer, nonessential, and unrecognized extensions here:

    Any change?

    Hello Frank.
    First of all, take a look at this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser It will help you understand what the browser really is.
    Now, as for your issue, if I understand it correctly, the only way to prevent this from happening (that I know of) is to go into Tools > Options > Tabs and select "Open links that open in a new window in:" as "New Tab".
    Of course, you can always drag and drop tabs from window to window, no problem.

  • Firefox opens everytime I press "W" when I'm playing a game?

    Every time I press the "W" key while in a game (So far it has happened while playing Ace of Spades and Killing Floor), my computer will switch from the game to the new Firefox browser that was created. How do I stop a new Firefox browser from opening by pressing "W"? This problem just started happening today when I updated to Firefox 4.0

    Ok, going out on a limb:
    Check your keyboard doesn't have a game/computer switch which alters how the keyboard works.
    In game mode, the keys may be re-assigned.
    Also check if there isn't a keyboard "driver"/handler program running which can be set/configured to do thing when certain keys are pressed.
    Sorry can't be of more help.
