Firefox opens up an explorer window when I download a file

Recently, Firefox started opening up an Explorer window every time I download a file. It's Better Explorer, actually, since I use that to replace the Microsoft version. The folder that opens is the target destination. So it creates multiple tabs, but I expect that it would just open up multiple instances of Windows Explorer if that's what I used.
So if I download a dozen images, I get a dozen tabs opened. This doesn't happen with IE or Chrome. I do have multiple extensions installed, but I've gone through the options in Firefox and any relating to downloads and none of them seem to have anything that might cause this. I did check the Applications tab under the Firefox Options, since that seemed like a probable cause. But I don't see anything. And I don't recall changing anything recently, in any case. I can't see anything in Better Explorer that would cause this behavior. Which is borne out by this not occurring in other browsers. And I haven't changed anything it, either.
I tried downloading something with NetVideoHunter and I get the same behavior. But it doesn't happen with DownloadThemAll!
I've tried researching it on-line, but the queries I use are apparently too similar to the ones for other issues, because nothing that comes up is even close to my problem.
As this is getting very annoying, any help would be greatly appreciated. Firefox remains my favorite desktop browser and I'm not prepared to give it up over this. But I'd hate to have to reinstall it, since I have it configure just the way I want it. And I'm not even sure that would fix the issue.
Thanks

Start Firefox in [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode safe mode] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
* https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
* https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:
* all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
* default theme is used (no persona)
* userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
* default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
* Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
* hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
* plugins are not affected
* preferences are not affected
Your profile folder contains a user.js file, which includes preferences that were not created by Firefox.
so you may want to also check for a user.js file and DELETE that.

  • If I am using a website which opens a pop up window or am downloading a file and the popup downloads window appears, it will minimize itself to the taskbar after a few seconds or if I move the mouse pointer out of the pop up window.

    Occurs every time I use the squeezenetwork.com website to control my squeezebox boom internet radio player. (logitech) Also occurs every time I download a file and the downloads window pops up. The pop up window minimizes to the taskbar, or the browser window is on top of the pop up window.

    Many thanks.
    With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
    Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
    (If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • Firefox opens multiple times (many windows) when click once, even after a reinstall in Windows 7.

    There really isn't much more to say, except that the situation occurs even after restarts.

    The cause is most likely the preferences file in your profile folder. That file contains your personal settings, so it doesn't get deleted when you reinstall/update Firefox. The reset feature also retains your preferences file.
    Instead of doing a mass delete of all your settings, you can try identify the culprits and reset them individually.
    # In the [[Awesome Bar - Find your bookmarks, history and tabs when you type in the address bar|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
    # Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''', to continue to the about:config page.
    # Click on the '''Status''' column, to sort your preferences by status, and group all the ''user set'' preferences together. They should appear in bold.
    # If you see any preference that look suspicious, just '''right-click''' on it, and select '''Reset'''.
    If you're still not sure which ones to reset, you can post most of them here easily. Go to '''Help > Troubleshooting Information''' then click '''Copy text to Clipboard'''. Open a reply to this post, and go to '''Edit > Paste''' to paste the info from your Troubleshooting Information page.

    Sorry you are having problems. First of all try Fifrefox's safemode.

    Next step, if safe mode did not work.
    <u>First: Try a clean install, (you have had a none standard version installed previously)</u><br /> that involves deleting the program files. Then if necessary try troubleshooting by creating and using a clean empty Firefox profile.

  • How to stop the email in mozilla firefox opening in a new window( I want it to open in a new tab)

    in the toolbar when I press the email button, my email opens in a new window, when I want my mail to open in a new tab. Please can you help????

    I don't think Firefox has a built-in email button. Do you have an add-on that created that button, or do you mean a button pinned to the Windows Taskbar?
    If it's an add-on, check whether it has an settings available for window vs. tab. If this doesn't appear with the button itself (for example, using a drop-down triangle next to the button) you can check the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    In the left column, click Extensions. Then check the list for the relevant extension and try its Options... button.

  • Launching Microsoft Access from Internet Explorer to view a downloaded MDB file opens the wrong file (not a problem if I use Firefox)

    When clicking on a link (in Internet Explorer 9) to download an Access MDB file and then choosing to open the file directly in Microsoft Access (2007) instead of saving it, the file is copied to Temporary Internet Files but Microsoft Access tries to open
    a different file and displays an (Unrecognized database format) error.
    When I click on the option to open the file, the MDB file is copied to Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 but instead of that file, Access tries to open a different (incorrect) file located in Temporary Internet Files\Content.MSO (e.g. in the above error
    message, NativeView.do is an XML file containing an error message).
    I don't see this problem with Word, Excel or PowerPoint files. When opening a Word file (without saving) the Word file is copied to Content.IE5 but an identical .tmp file is created in Content.MSO which when opened in Microsoft Word displayed the required file
    correctly. The same happens for Excel files. PowerPoint appears to be handled a little differently (no .tmp file created in Content.MSO but the required file is still copied to Content.IE5) but the PPT file is still opened correctly in Microsoft PowerPoint.
    I think the Content-Type "application/msaccess" is fine because Internet Explorer does launch Microsoft Access. It just tries to open the wrong file (or so I think). However, it looks like the file type is not being determined. Here is what I noticed
    when trying to open different Microsoft Office files using Internet Explorer:
    The last one is the MDB file. As you can see, only for this type of file, the "Type" (Microsoft Office Access 2007?) is not displayed in this Open/Save dialog box.
    On Firefox, I don't see this problem. When I tried clicking on the link to the MDB file in Firefox, Microsoft Access was launched and the file was opened correctly. Is there something I can do so the MDB file is opened properly using IE? I can add/change headers
    in the HTTP response that writes this file to the output stream (on disk) if that helps.
    Thanks for your time!

    Sounds like a problem symptom to be discussed in either an IE forum or an Access forum, not here.  How did you come to post here?  ForumsRedesign.  That might be an on-topic issue for this forum.  <eg>
    Can you find your way to either of those other forums easily from here?  Another on-topic question for here I think.   ; )

    You can check the home page setting:
    *Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
    You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
    Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    *Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

    Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Force iView to open in a new window when using NavigationTarget

    Scenario - Portal Version 6.0 - NW2004  SP16 - WAS 6.40
    A Custom iView is used to gain access to an application running outside of the portal.  The user's credentails to the target application are recorded in the portal's UME via user mapping.
    I want a user to be able to click a hyperlink to this iView that has been embedded in an email, and have the user gain access to the target application by 'going via the portal'.  The url that I use is of the form:
    http //<my_portal_server>/irj/portal?NavigationTarget=navurl://49a8add355f836061e6279f389cdc72e&open=/page&id=100&proc=10067&flag=1
    This is working, the user is first taken to the portal's login page, and upon successful login to the SAP portal, user is then directed to the target iView, and is logged in automatically to the target application, and able to use the target application.
    >BUT EVEN though the iveiw is configured to open in a new window it does not. It always opens in the main content area, and it always opens in this area in a height of about 40 pixels.  The iView properties are set to FULLPAGE.
    >If I invoke this iView using the portal's standard built in navigation, it does open in a new window
    >It just won't open in a new window when using direct URL to the iView WHY?
    How can I get the target iView to open in a new window under all circumstances?
    Do I need to pass more information in the URL?
    Are there a standard list of URL parameters somewhere that influence the behaviour of the NavigationTarget?  I have seen reference to 'context', 'mode' etc but can't find a list of valid parameters?

    It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
    Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

    Easiest on Mac OS X 10.7 is to use this button:
    *Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.
    Open Finder and use one of these:
    * Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library

    You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.

    zzsara wrote:
    I want to open a new browser window and display the html file in local drive. ...Did you ever pause to consider how ridiculous that is?
    The best audience for applets is people off the internet. 'People off the internet' might be using a computer that has no (what was it?) 'open.html' in the root of the C: drive. In fact (shock horror) they may not even be running Windows, and would therefore probably have no 'C:' drive at all.
    If you do not intend to distribute this to people off the web, an application makes a lot more sense, but even then, you cannot rely on the document being there unless you 'put it there' (during installation, for instance).
    As the other poster intimated, applets can load documents off the local disk as long as they are trusted. Here is an example*, but note that it is not so rash as to presume any particular path or file, and instead leaves it to the user to choose the document to display.
    * The short code can be seen at SDNShare on the [Defensive Loading of Trusted Applets|http://sdnshare.sun.com/view.jsp?id=2315] post.
    On the other hand, a sandboxed applet can load any document coming from its own server via URL, or get showDocument(URL) to work. In that case, the JRE must recognize that the URL is from its own server, so the best way to form URLs for applet use is via the URL constructor
    new URL(getDocumentBase(), "path/to/open.html");That is how I form the URL in this [ sandboxed example of formatting source|http://pscode.org/fmt/sbx.html?url=/jh%2FHelpSetter.java&col=2&fnt=2&tab=2&ln=0]. Of course, in this case the applet loads the document, then parses the text to draw the formatted version, but the point is that an URL produced this way will work with showDocument(URL).
    I am pretty sure showDocument() in an applet off the internet will work with an URL pointing to a foreign (not its own) server, but it will not be able to load documents off the end user's local disks.
    I suggest a couple of things.
    - Try to express this problem in terms of what feature it is that you want to offer the end user. Your question jumps directly to a bad strategy for achieving ..who knows what? An example of a feature is "Shows the applet 'help' files on pressing F1".
    - A good way to indicate interest in a solution is to offer [Duke stars|http://wikis.sun.com/display/SunForums/Duke+Stars+Program+Overview] to match that interest.
    Edit 1:
    ..and please figure out how to use the CODE tags.
