Firefox Peters Out, Stops Responding

I downloaded Firefox about a week and a half ago,Firefox 3.
Everything was working fine, then about 3 days ago, sometimes the page would not respond to back command or some of my favorite web sites. Today, hotmail comes up in some 1996 script, very basic looking, and again, not at all responsive. It seems to have lost its juice.
I deleted the plist file. I even had a Genius Bar appt during which we reinstalled FF 3.
Can someone please tell me why this is happening and what I can do about it?
I had been using FF2 before, and that was working fine, but I thought it might be good to upgrade.
Going around on the FF forum was difficult.
Thank you very much in advance.

I have been experiencing similar problems. I've seen this for the past year or more (both firefox 3 and 2). I only see this on my Mac; not on a linux box that I use at work with the same version of firefox.
Just to be clear, the situation I observe is that the browser is not hung, it appears lively. However, most web links have no effect. Buttons on web pages appear to be pressed, but do nothing. If I right click and select "Open Link in New Window", I get a new blank window. It's been suggested that something like the java script interpreter has died. But, I don't know. I restart and things are often fine for a while.
In, perhaps, a related problem, there are times when it appears that the style sheet for a page does not load. This seems to correspond to the other symptoms.
I'd file a bug against firefox, but don't feel that understand this enough to describe it well.

  • Firefox 15.1 stops responding for no apparent reason!

As the title says, Firefox 15.1 stops responding for no apparent reason!
I just did a re-format of my system disk and I re-installed Vista 64-bit on it. I have obviously re-installed everything from Windows updates to chipset, graphics and sound drivers. I also pulled down the latest and greatest version of Firefox which at the time is 15.1. So installed that too.
Every now and then Firefox just stops responding for no apparent reason. It looks like it is processing the request (after clicking a link etc.) but it then it's just a silence... nothing happens!
It doesn't even say it can't load the page and Windows doesn't even say that it has stopped responding. Not even after I click like crazy on the Firefox interface like different buttons and tabs and on the web page... not even then does it say "not responding" in the title bar of the window, which is usually the case when you deal with programs that are not responding immediately (you get that dialog that asks you if you would like to close the program or search for solutions online). Just nothing!... it's only quite and does nothing....
At the same time, all other programs are working flawlessly, such as the Explorer (Windows Explorer), or even Internet Explorer. And Internet connection is not lost!
I have no add-ons or extensions installed whatsoever. I just installed Firefox! I haven't even had the time to install Java yet. All I have is Adobe Flash player. That's the only extra. Otherwise it's in its' original form, default settings, etc, etc, etc.
Why is it acting up like this?...
I'm surprised that there even is such a thing as Firefox 15. This one came at the end of August, correct?
I have been on Firefox 14.x something before I re-installed Vista. For a good reason so! This is why I hate the new update model of Firefox and I don't jump on the next train (version) unless it's safe and I'm having compatibility issues with the one I use at the moment. This is why my first step after installing Firefox always is to disable automatic updates! I hate it when the software vendors are pushing out their latest software versions forcefully.
Frankly, I think this new Firefox version of yours is crap. It's not properly tested and it doesn't belong in the official release channel. This is more like a nightly build or something. It probably has some memory leak, despite the promises made by Firefox engineers that it will not have memory leaks and that it would be the fastest version of Firefox ever. I don't really need a faster browsing, I need a stable browser for reliable browsing. The speed of this Firefox version is close to ZERO! When it's not responding at all...
I have been a fan of Firefox since 0.8. I will be probably ditching this latest version and going back to an older version like 13 or 14 that's more closer to the reality and not in this fantasy world of fastest, greatest, latest, version this, version that, latest features. I just want a browser that works man!... I'm getting tired of Firefox. I may even ditch it altogether in favor of.... I don't know.... Safari?... Chrome?.... I might even go back to Internet Explorer after like 12 years of absence.

please try to uninstall the adobe flash plugin from the windows control panel. afterwards manually delete any leftover files in ''C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash'' and download & install the plugin again (uncheck the option to install the bundled security software): www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

  • Why does Firefox tend to stop responding

Almost on a daily basis Firefox stops responding out of nowhere. At first I reckoned it might be my installed add-ons, that were poorly written, that screwed up the system. After disabling them the problem kept reoccuring. It tends to run really sluggish and it doesn't help my productivity level this way. Can anyone help me? If you have an idea please respond in common language: I'm not that much of a computer wiz. Thank you!

  • If Firefox crashes or stops responding will that harm it in any way?

I am curious as to whether or not Firefox (including any third party extensions) would be harmed if Firefox either crashed or stopped responding. I am using version 27.x of Firefox on Windows 8 with the Windows 8.1 update installed. I am using two extensions, which are Adblock Plus and WOT.

Firefox frequently updates your settings files, so there is a possibility of some damage when Firefox stops working unexpectedly, as a file could be left in an unreadable state. This could be similar to losing power to your computer, or having a severe (blue screen) crash.
I think your best protection is to make regular backups. This article has tips on doing that: [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]].
By the way, if you have been experiencing crashes, you could provide more information on those. When Firefox crashes, it usually records information about what was happening at that moment. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "[[Firefox Crashes]]" (especially the last section) for steps to get those crash IDs, and then post some of the recent ones here.

  • Firefox freezes and stops responding even after reinstall

Hi, I've been a Firefox user for a decade, despite three attempts to switch to Chrome. But this is getting on my nerves. I'm in the middle of something and suddenly the browser freezes - I can move the cursor over whatever bookmarks, menu items, tabs or content but nothing responds. It's exactly as if the entire browser had turned into a printscreen. I get no crash report afterwards, I just close and restart it. This has been going on for quite a few months now. I'm using the latest version by the way.
    Extensions I use:
    Adblock
    Colorzilla
    Diigo Toolbar
    Evernote webclipper
    Fireshot
    Pin It buton
    Video Download helper
    Wisestamp
    Lazarus Form Recovery
And quite a few other plugins.

Hello kutez, '''try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
'''If Firefox is open,''' you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
    * Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled''.
'''If Firefox is not running,''' you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
also, any luck if you delete in your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Windows profile folder] the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file User.js file] you have ?
The user.js file '''does not exist by default'''. If you create the file, forget it, if you have not create the file then delete the User.js file, to see if the problem goes away (some programs create and write in the file also).
    thank you

  • Firefox stops responding when starting

Basically, Firefox has worked fine for 3 months on this computer, no problems. I haven't installed any new add-ons since I set it up initially. I closed out of my session, went and had lunch, came back and now within 5-10 seconds after starting up Firefox, it freezes. I deleted my cache and nothing changed. I can't use the profile manager because you have to be in Firefox to do so, and it immediately stops responding.
I did a complete reinstall after wiping everything that I could, and it worked for one full session. When I closed it and opened it again, same thing as before. Only thing different from today from yesterday was a single game installation (Sim City 4 what whaaat), otherwise there's been no change to my computer's files.
    Any help?

Are you getting any error message or no
When Firefox hangs, it stops responding to your clicks and keystrokes and doesn't seem to be doing anything. Also, a "(Not Responding)" label is displayed in the title bar and the mouse becomes a spinning wait cursor when it's over the Firefox window. • Firefox is taking a long time to open and load my home page, didn't happen while the old version. Also stops responding frequently.

    Hello there,
I have been a loyal user of Firefox since 2005 and have never had and issue with this browser. It has been my top choice when it comes to using it in my devices along with suggesting to other people. The problem I have recently began to experience happened after updating to the newer version...4 or 5, not sure which. My Adobe Flash player is up to date and have no add-ons running that are not part of the default browser.
When I click the icon it takes a long time for the window to show up and a good minute before the homepage shows up and is functional to use. I never had this issues with previous versions so I am assuming there might be some bug causing this particular problem. Also, when I am playing games Firefox decided to stop responding and I have to force quit so my games don't suddenly slow down. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.7; I also tested opening Safari and it opened and loaded the homepage is about 3 seconds, I don't wanna have to switch unless I have to. Any help is appreciated, thanks. :)

    Hi Donekes,
First off I need a little more information to help with troubleshooting.  You say that an error occurs when you "try to re-open the same problem app before the old session completely exits".  Does the error have an error code or dialog display?  It may also be possible to receive an error log.  Here is a knowledge base that explains how to retrieve error logs.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/54E361E3FF477EC186256C320068184F?OpenDocument
If you are able to get that information then please post.  Have a good day.

  • When I enter the website, Firefox stops responding and I have to end the process from the Task Manager. How do I solve this problem?

I am running Firefox 4.0 beta 7 on Windows XP Tablet Edition OS. When I enter this site using Firefox, the browser stops responding and I have to end the process using Task Manager. However, when I open it with other browsers such as IE8, I am able to view the site as per normal. This only happened when I updated my browser to Beta 7 and I did not have such problems in the previous betas.

There is [[Flash]] content on that page.
Do you have a problem with Flash on other websites?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

  • Firefox stops responding when started up

As soon as I start Firefox the program stops responding and I cannot do anything but end the process.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox constantly hangs, not responding extreamly slow loading is getting worse

firefox is continuosly hanging in every way posible, my OS is vista have the latest version of fire fox installed, but has been getting gradually worse and worse since approx May, it had done this before but not to the extent it does now. firefox updated/installed the latest version (at that time) about 2xupdates ago, this is when the problems first started.
EG, i will be scrolling down through a page on ebay and for no apparent reason firefox will just stop responding, same thing on you tube when watching videos or searching, also pages are taking a really long time to load sometimes resulting in them not loading at all or loading a blank page. this to has increased in how often this happens. Am seriously fed up with this problem its driving me crazy.
== firefox new version was installed

I'm having the same problem. I am running windows 7 64bit. FF is slow. painfully so. I've switched to Chrome and have no problems. FF just keeps getting worse it seems by the day.

  • Stops responding

Since I updated to version 6.0.2 firefox will randomly stop responding for no reason regardless of what it is i'm doing (EG surfing the web, facebook, playing games) but it wasn't real bad until recently i tried to download gimp. before firefox would stop responding then it would recover fairly quickly, now i have to force close it every 10 minutes.

It's happened to me three of the last four times I tried to download. First two were 'Single of the Week's - both times it appeared to download, but during 'processing' iTunes went Not Responding. When I restarted iTunes, the files were gone. Bought a song after that and everything worked normally. Bought one more and had the same download issue - I've been billed for it, but there's only a temp folder on my hard drive as evidence that I ever got the file; it doesn't show up in my Purchased list nor in Check For Available Downloads. As far as Apple can tell, I bought it - but I never got it!

  • Firefox stops responding immediately after startup. I've tried all the recommended troubleshooting methods and cannot figure out why.

I have tried all of the recommended troubleshooting methods but none of them seem to work. This issue began despite no change being made to Firefox, or my computer; it just spontaneously stopped responding after launch.
Not only does Firefox stop responding, but it also prevents any other programs from being launched, and make already launched programs extremely slow. Furthermore, once it stops responding, it becomes impossible to get rid of; the only way is to log off, or restart the computer entirely.

  • Firefox stops responding and some times dose not start when clicked on alot!

fire fox 9 stops responding for long periods and some times dose not load when clicked on. Also please note fire fox refuses to load the comments section on Yahoo.com under the news tab. The little wheel on the bottom of the page just spins and spins and never loads this area of the page.
I think i know why but wonder since i have had issues with fire fox in the past with the whole not responding and load issues.

Firefox which stops responding after some time is a BIG problem. You're not the only one. The problem seems to be with sites which require Java. The problems I seem to have spotted is this : You visit a web site which needs Java so Java asks Firefox for the amount of memory needed and this is lent to JAVA. However, when you leave that web site, Java is naughty in that it doesn't give back the memory borrowd. Firefox then has to consume a lot of memory to the point that the whole computer system grinds to a halt as you have run out of memory.
Search in the forums for high memory or RAM and you will see many threads. In fact, when you first install Firefox it will ask if you want to send anonymous data about the memory usage!!
