Firefox preview loop of SHTML files

OK, got one I have not ever seen before and cannot find any solutions for. Suddenly, and with no changes to firefox or dreamweaver, when I create a .shtml file and try to preview it in firefox, I get an endless loop of tabs as though it is trying to open the file but just can't. None of the tabs actually open the file. It seems to be restricted only to firefox and shtml files. If I preview a html or htm file in firefox it is fine. If I open a shtml in explorer it is fine. I have also able to view shtml files that are already on the internet fine as well, so seems to be limited to the preview function. I have tried reinstalling firefox and that did nothing. This one has me completely lost. Any ideas would be of huge help. I am trying not to reinstall dreamweaver as I have about 50 sites in there and is a major pain to backup and reinstall it all. Thanks!!
Jeff

Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
Thank you.

  • Previewing loops

Have had no luck with PCs trying to do music recoding so I swithced over to Mac because I heard it so easy, seamless, and problem free. Now, on opening Garageband for the first time and trying to preview loops I get an error mesage that says: "the software instrument or apple loop selected is currently being installed. You have already initiated the installation of additional content for Garageband via Software update. For additional information please open the software update application." I have opened this application and nothing. I have now spent about two hours trying to fix this problem. Should I "convert back to PC, take this load of crap back to the store or is there something simple I am missing?

I have found if you wait long enough, you will hear the file begin to play. Sometimes the delay can several seconds. Not acceptable IMO.

  • How to view .shtml files locally? I have added "Open in Browser" but still not able to see the local .shtml file.

I have added Open in browser add ons in Firefox browser, but still not able to see the .shtml files on local machine.
Can any one please tell me how to view .shtml files in Firefox?

SHTML files are regular HTML files that make use of Server-Side Includes. In some server configurations, the special file extension is required to instruct the server to parse the file for SSI code.
If Firefox doesn't recognize the file type, it is likely the MIME type is incorrect.

  • Unable to open .shtml file in Sun java web server 6.1

    Hi,
I migrated my application from iPlanet 6.0 to Sun one web server 6.1 and after that I'm unable to open any .shtml file from my browser. This issue is not with all browser but only with few.
Ex : It works fine with firefox 1.x but fails with firefox 2.x
I tried adding the shtml_send Init parameters in Magnus.conf and edited the obj.conf, and my mime type has the following entry for shtml:
    type=magnus-internal/parsed-html exts=shtml,jbhtml
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks
    SS

What is the exact version of Web Server you are using? Should be in the error logs or try $start -version
It would be faster if you can capture and cut and paste the data that is sent between firefox and Web Server in both the cases using /usr/sfw/bin/ssltap (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/tools/ssltap.html) or ethereal when you try to view that shtml file. We can see if its any different in both cases and try it from there.
Also verify the steps given in http://docs.sun.com/source/817-1832-10/pgshtml.html
    mime.types should have :
    type=magnus-internal/parsed-html exts=shtml
    obj.conf should have :
    Service fn="shtml_send" type="magnus-internal/parsed-html" method="(GET|HEAD)"
When you activate parsing, magnus.conf should have :
    Init funcs="shtml_init,shtml_send" shlib="install_dir/bin/https/bin/Shtml.dll" NativeThreads="no" fn="load-modules"
Shtml.dll (or libShtml.so on UNIX), is located in install_dir/bin/https/bin for Windows, and install_dir/bin/https/lib for UNIX.

  • Preview not opening pdf files unless they have an pdf extension

Preview will not open pdf that does not have a pdf extension. If I give a valid pdf file a random extension like .xxx, preview opens without windows. If I give it .jpg it opens with a questionmark in a window. If I give it pdf it open without a glitch.
Why cannot Preview detect whether a file is open-able or not an not give a **** about extension. This is not windows but a unix system
The problem exist when a pdf file is downloaded by firefox and not given a .pdf extention in the downloads folder. In Safari the file is opened without problems inside Safari.

Yeah, but Preview wont open the file at all, even through the open dialog, all files not associated with preview are greyed out. Shouldn't a program open a file if told to?
Yes, I agree with you. I also could not open the files unless I changed their extensions.
Also the "file" command has no problem finding out it's a pdf. I believe its an obsolete thing specifying filetype on extension, and not on content. Is is possible to get preview to open the file depending on content and not on extention.
Like I said, I think this was a conscious choice that Apple made with OS X, but I'm not sure why the decided to go that way (maybe posting on one of the dev lists would give you the answer to that).
I haven't been able to get Preview to open files once I've changed the file extension...

  • Cannot open local shtml file

I am trying to open a local shtml file (any file) but I get prompted: You have chosen to open (filename) which is a Hyper Text Markup Language from: Local file location. What should Firefox do with this file? Open with (browse), Save File, Do this automatically for files like this from now on. Before I upgraded my FF browser, I did not have this issue. What steps should I take to resolve it?

  • How to view "shtml" files locally?

I am writing some simple web pages and decided to use an "shtml" format, so that I can group all the common elements into a single file. This works nicely when I post an shtml file and the associated "include" file to my University's web server. If I serve the file locally from my ~user (Sites) directory none of the elements in the "include" file get rendered.
Can someone advise how to edit my httpd.conf file (Apache configuration) and/or user.conf file to allow the onboard Apache server to parse .shtml files? I have tried to follow the configuration instructions at apache.org, but I'm clearly doing something wrong.
Thanks in advance for any help ...

  • Can't save images as jpg, jpeg, bmp, etc. only as Preview Document or All Files.

I'm running Firefox 27.0 on OSX 10.9. When I try to save an image from a website I'm only given the option to save the file as a Preview Document or All Files. I cannot save the image as it exists on the website (ie. jpg, jpeg, gif.) Right now I'm saving as a Preview Document, opening that in preview and then exporting the file as an image. I'd like to just save the file directly from a website as an image rather than a Preview Document. How do I do this?

Can't you give the file the correct file extension for that image (e.g. .jpg) when you save the file?
Try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

  • Firefox not displaying favicon/.ico file for specific website

Firefox has always displayed the favicon for my website, until recently. Now there is just a blank space where the favicon should be. I am able to see the favicon for all other websites except my own. It is a wordpress site, so I followed their most recent instructions for adding a favicon. I even tried some other guidelines and tips for adding .ico files, just in case wordpress was missing something, but still no luck. I have double-checked the file format as a 16x16px .ico file and made sure the code & image location within my website directory was correct... Everything looks as it should. The favicon is displaying perfectly in all other browsers I tried, such as Chrome, Safari, Opera & IE. I have cleared my cache, cleared my browser history and even uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. I also tried another computer using a different IP address. It just isn't displaying.
When I preview the .ico file under 'page info -> media' it looks like Firefox is locating the image and recognizing the file dimensions, but nothing appears in the preview window and under 'file size' it just says "unknown (not cached)."
Here is the link to the site: http://www.mattielynn.com/
Does anyone know why this might be happening?

That image doesn't seem to be working in Firefox 3 and 8 (works in Firefox 9 and later).
It works if I save it as 24 bit instead of 32 bit.

  • Firefox can't find the file at (a location is specified) when either "Navigate previous" (and next) buttons are pressed in an HTML5 skin (but OK in IE/Chrome).

I create HTML5 help projects from a package called MadCap Flare. It uses what they call an HTML5 'skin' that sets the style/layout of the page and also includes 'Navigate previous' and 'Navigate next' buttons. When viewing the help and pressing these navigate buttons in IE8 or Chrome 32 there is no problem, but in Firefox 27 I get the following: (typical error for pressing a button on any page)
    "File not found"
    "Firefox can't find the file at /C:/SVN/FlareEnglishOnLineHelp/Output/HTML5_Help_Modeller_Reference/4attrib/idh_jointinterface_element_meshes.htm?TocPath=Modeller Reference Manual|Chapter 5 : Model Attributes|Meshing|_____2."
" Check the file name for capitalisation or other typing errors."
" Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted."
    - Because the files and buttons work in other browsers I'm wondering just what is going on here with Firefox>>>>

I should correct that last entry and state that the | charactacters are generated automatically in the Toc-Path for each 'book' name in the online help, and are not something manually created, whereas the : characters have come from the TOC book topic names (which were manually entered names and are what we would ideally require). But, because 'previous' and 'next' topics within nested TOC books without colon (:) characters CAN be browsed successfully when just | characters are present in the Toc-Path, the limitation would appear to be solely due to the : characters.

  • My home page is google and it works but when I open a new tab it displays an error message :Firefox can't find the file at chrome://quick_start/content/index.ht

Firefox no longer opens PDF files. Explorer works OK. I have checked the Applications window in the Tools/Options and it says I am using PDF-xChange viewer....It just does not do anything. I get the message in the Download Error window which says...."could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Is the same error which I get when I attempt to open a PDF file on a webpage using the Firefox browser....Explorer works OK so I am now forced to Explorer to read PDF files via a browser.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After removing a old copy of PDF-xChange Viewer and updating to the last version

The error message suggests that the file (pdf) that you're trying to download cannot be saved in the folder Firefox tries to save it in.
This can be due to several things - it could be a non-existing folder (could be a problem with the updated application), the hard drive could be too full to store the file (less likely if you can generally surf the net without error messages) or it could contain an error.
To complicate things a little further, it seems to me that you have (at least) 3 different PDF-handling plugins in Firefox from different programs:
    PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.3.2"
    Zeon PDF Plugin For Mozilla
This shouldn't matter too much, thou, as it will most likely simply use either the latest installed or the first one it finds when looking up associations for files of type 'pdf'.
First, in Tools > Options... > tab General > section File download, select "Save files in" and Browse your way to a (non-writeprotected!) folder on a drive where you're certain there is enough free space - like the Desktop folder to make the files end up on your Windows desktop.
Second, under Applications as you mention yourself, find all document types related to PDF files, and set these to one of the programs. Check the entire list to be sure there isn't one hiding under one of the other programs' document types (Adobe Acrobat document, PDF X-Change and Zeon).
Restart Firefox, and try opening a PDF again.
If it fails once more, try changing the documents again to one of the other programs, like "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)".
If it STILL fails, change it to simply "Save file". Then you can simply browse your way to the download folder with Windows Explorer, and doubleclick the PDF file to see which program actually handles PDF files as default on the machine, and if it works properly.
If Firefox flatly refuses to save the PDF files in a folder which you're certain both exist and has space for the file, some (probably security related) program is most likely interfering with Firefox, preventing it in storing PDF files on the system.

  • Firefox won't load .mov files online but plays them locally: QT problem?

My website has several pages with embedded .mov files, which used to play perfectly well, but now only give a question mark after the progress bar fills up.
For example, one of these pages is http://www.paulozelinsky.com/shivers-animation2a.html
Firefox can open this and similar pages that are stored in my computer (on a mirror of the site) and view the animations normally. But online it doesn't work. Typing the path to the online animation file into Firefox's URL field also produces an empty QuickTime window with a question mark, so it's not a matter of the page code.
Is it possible that QuickTime's plugin isn't compatible with Firefox, at least for .mov files like mine? (Created with After Effects 7, using Sorensen 3 codec). Does Firefox use plugins in the same way for playing a file on a web server as playing it in a local folder? Or could there be something going on with my web host?
I would at least like to know if this failure to load the animation is the same for other Mac Firefox users. I have heard that the animation does load, though slowly, for at least one PC Firefox user.
When I first noticed the change, the problem was occurring in Safari as well as Firefox, but now it is only in Firefox.
    I have Firefox 3.6.8, and in HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins I have QuickTime Plugin.plugin v. 7.6.6. I also see in there something called nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt.

Bump, bump. Please can anybody help?

  • How can I see preview images of STN files in CS4?

I save many of my art files as STN (Genuine Fractals) files so I can print on demand at various sizes. I used to be able to see tiny preview images of these files; now, using CS4 32-bit or 64-bit with Windows 7 64-bit OS, all I see in my STN folder is little blank page icons - no images. I have descriptive filenames, but still - it would REALLY help to be able to quickly scan the images for the one I want to open in PhotoShop. I used to be able to see these preview STN images. Help??

Theoretically, to see Sting format (.stn) thumbnails, you'd have to get a codec from the OnOne software people and install it into Windows Explorer as a shell extension.  This has nothing to do with Photoshop.
I know of no such codec available, at least not for .x64 systems (64 bit Explorer).  I haven't seen .stn thumbnails for a long time, and I currently have their Perfect Resize 7 product.
But it seems to me that a long ago when I used a 32 bit OS there was a time that I could see .stn thumbnails.  Perhaps they once provided a 32 bit codec with their product, or I had a 3rd party codec that understood the format.
It would be a great question to pose to OnOne Software.  If you do, please report back here what they say.
