Firefox process won't die

When I quit/close Firefox, wait 1 minute, then reopen Firefox, Firefox does not open...it just hangs.
When looking in my Task Manager, there are two firefox.exe processes running. Killing the process via the Task Manager is required to get Firefox to open/run again.

I'm quite familiar with the issue you've proposed via this KB article. My issue, though, is quite different. I don't get the annoying "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.." alert box.
Further, with the known issue, the firefox process does eventually die. With this new issue, the firefox process never dies and appears orphaned.
Keep in mind this only started occurring after I upgraded to version 3.6.9 two days ago. There is no doubt in my mind something is broken in the newest build.
As a developer, I like adhering an important and well-known principle in the software development world when I build and maintain stuff: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sometimes I wonder/question if Mozilla developers hold the same conviction, given numerous new issues that make it into every new build of Firefox.
This also brings up another subject: does anyone do QA anymore? I like to test my stuff before letting others use it. It's extremely important to make sure your stuff is solid, before letting others use it. Cross your T's and dot your I's, for heaven's sake!

Right now I use Opera.

    I managed to fix the problem myself. I did a scan threat scan with malwarebytes antimalware pro that I had and adwcleaner and quarantined everything the first softare found and cleaned with the second everything that seemed to be leftovers of old unisntalled programs. Then had to delete the kmeleon and firefox appdata leftover profiles. I only lfet the firefox light folders which are the folders of the browser I wanted to keep. I then checked for tweaks. I got windows to desfault settings checking if I have doen any tweaks with avg pc tuneup 2011,Tweak Me! and UWT 2.2 and used TCP Optimizer to bring the network settings to windows default for 9000 kbps download speed (after I did a network speed test). Now firefox light is super fast and xcloses normally.

    Update firefox, it asked me to update flash, I tried to update flash but it said I had to close firefox. A box came up and said the Flash install would continue when I closed firefox.     Firefox will just stop loading/ connecting to the internet. The gray circle will just continually move but it never turns green to load the pages. I know it's not my internet because my internet explorer works just fine while this is happening to firefox. I then go into my windows task manager and try and end the firefox proccess but it won't end. So I restart my computer and firefox eventually starts acting up again.

    When I close Firefox or Thunderbird, they do not reopen later. Dialog box says they are still running, but process won't close in task manager. System requires reboot to get back in

    Maybe your security (Anti-virus) software is checking files while Firefox is starting and takes so much time that Firefox can't access them and decides to skip loading those locked files. If that happens with sqlite database files like places.sqlite then bookmarks won't work properly. A second start works because the AV software had already checked the file. So you need to check the rules for Firefox in your security software.
    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

    You just need to insert it in your new computer and double-click on "Firefox Setup 3.6.13.exe" from Windows Explorer and follow instructions.

    If I click a link on my desktop or in any other program (while Firefox is open and running), I get this message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. There's about a billion links for this if you Google it, but they all say that Firefox wasn't shut down properly. (OK, maybe not ALL of them, but if the needle is in that haystack, I haven't yet found it.) That's not the issue in my case since I haven't shut FF down at all.

    Assuming it's Windows, right click a blank part of the Windows Taskbar and go to Task Manager. Then click the ''Processes ''tab, find '''firefox.exe''' and then right click it and choose '''End Process'''.

  • Firefox is taking a long time to open the first time I click on it and also a dialouge box comes up stating firefox is already running, but is not responding, you must close existing firefox process? What is going on?

    After I start my computer in the morning, I go to my email, then I click on firefox, with google as my homepage, it takes a long time for firefox to show up on the computer. It says it is connecting, then when I close firefox, and go to reopen it again, a dialog box opens up that says firefox is already running and I must close existing firefox process first. I have not run into this problem before.

    * The first time you start up any application after turning on your computer is called a cold start, which is why Firefox takes a while to load right away. (I've noticed that future versions of Firefox start up faster on a cold start then Firefox 5.0.1.) Also, a lower amount of RAM could be slowing its start-up down since Firefox is kind of memory hungry.
    * As for the second part of your question, press ctrl,Alt, and the delete keys on your keyboard. The Windows Task Manager should start. Go to the processes tab and look for 'firefox.exe'. Right click on the firefox.exe and click 'End Process'. Hit Yes and wait for a minute.

    Today I got a strange problem which is kind of strange to my, so some of the details and what happened? It was just shut down the Firefox browser and trying to open it again but i got a crash pop-up message !
    Not only this, but that the crash message keep pop-up, which compelled me to send a first report, the second report, etc. a lot of reporting and the problem is still there! So I then tried to fix the Firefox browser by clicking on the re-start Firefox and even reset Firefox but this did not work \\!
    So right now I use Chrome browser in order to report the problem
