Firefox randomly freezes when accessing bookmarks

Firefox randomly (about 1 in 50 times) will freeze when accessing folder located on the Bookmarks Toolbar. The folder will expand as blank without any bookmarks in it and then FF will stop responding. I've reinstalled FF, deleted appdata/programdata FF folders, created new profile. The issue remained.

Hi dry4ng,
I am sorry to hear that sometimes that when opening folders that they open blank and it causes Firefox to start to hang.
When you tried a new profile and a new folder, how did you create the folder, and is it the same folder giving issues?
Over how many bookmarks are you talking? and is there anything distinctive about the folder? size, depth, type of links etc?

  • Firefox is freezing when accessing system files

Whenever I try to upload or simply access my system folders, firefox freezes and does not recover when I attempt to click on any file. This happens for everything from trying to upload pictures to attempting to import my bookmarks.html file. I use Windows 7 and have the latest (3.6.8) version of Firefox.

    You can try this:
Copy and Paste this code in the Code field in the "Tools > Error Console" and click the "Evaluate" button to cleanup and compress the places.sqlite database file.

  • Firefox randomly freezes, uninstall will not work...

When I am on any website at all, Firefox randomly freezes for about 10 seconds. Firefox tints white and program title says (Not Responding).
I've tried scanning Firefox with anti-virus and anti-malware software but its clean. Ive restarted my computer and tried updating and reinstalling Firefox, my problem still persists.
I decided totally uninstalling Firefox then installing an offline setup should fix it but when I try to uninstall the program does nothing. I took this screenshot: http://gyazo.com/8b1986b672f4911370146cbcd3b2b288
I don't know why but that is the only entry that has anything to do with Firefox in my Programs and Features. When I press Uninstall nothing at all happens. The version of firefox I have is the latest 13.0.1 as of June 17, 2012 as shown in this screenshot: http://gyazo.com/ac401e0668a9a1a5fa632d3bd61f8dd7
I want to just delete the Firefox install directory located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox but I don't know if that will delete everything that has to do with Firefox and I want a total removal of the program before I reinstall to ensure my problem is fixed. I have searched all over the internet for my problem to find the answer but did not find anything which is why I'm submitting this. All help and comments are appreciated.

Sometimes an orphaned entry in Programs isn't updated or removed if Firefox updates, but a new entry is added.
If you are comfortable with using the Registry editor then you can remove that entry.

  • Since the plugin container update, firefox keeps freezing when opened and on certain sites.

''(locking this old thread. If you have this issue then please create a new thread - c)''
Not sure if its because of the plugin container update but issues began around that time. When I open firefox sometimes its frozen, all i can do is close it down and open a new window. it does not say "(not responding)" like when it crashes, i just cannot type, click bookmark or anything. in particular the site on http://forum.breakbeat.co.uk/, to post messages on there an new box opens, this also freezes in the same manner, only works again if firefox is reset, or sometimes begins to work again by itself, 10 minutes later or so....
PLEASE NOTE: this is not the usual form of crashing, or whatever the technical term is, it simply freezes, yet i can click the "x" in the corner and it instantly recognizes that. when a box opens in a site that crashes, i can still use other tabs/windows of firefox no problem, just not the site... the site is not experiencing issues, already asked them.
    thanks

Same here. Win7 64bit, Firefox 3.6.6, Flash Player 10. It all started after the last Update, few weeks ago. Firefox is freezing when loading videos (ex:youtube) and can only be stopped by killing the process in the task manager. Firefox works normal thou after killing the firefox "plugin-container.exe". It would be nice if somebody from Mozilla would pay some attention to this issue.

    Hi Apple,
iphone 5s latest updates , safari still freezes when accessability voice over is on and blue tooth keyboard still doesnt work when accessability voice over is on, Help

    Hi,
If you are absolutely sure that neither the sound output of the Macbook nor the sound output of VoiceOver are muted then try to reset VoiceOver.
    1. Open VoiceOver Preferences.
    2. From the File menu choose "Reset All VoiceOver Preferences …".
    3. Click "Reset.
    4. Turn VoiceOver Off and On again. (hold command and press F5 twice).
If you still don't hear anything then it could be that the main sound output of the Macbook got muted somehow. I find that I often hit the mute button on my Apple wireless keyboard without noticing. So just make sure that its not muted and also hit the "Volume Up" a few times. Its so terribly obvious I know but its also very easy to miss. Lots of people do that.

    Hello Steven.
There have been similar reports, yes. You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • IPod randomly freezes when playing tunes

My Ipod 30gb randomly freezes during a song. Sometimes it freezes for a few seconds and sometimes it can freeze for a couple of minutes. It then just carries on playing.
It is not always the same song and can include songs purchased from Itunes as well as CD's downloaded - i.e. it is totally random.
All of the songs play perfectly on Itunes. I have only about half filled the iPid so am not really in the market to upgrade.
It has only started doing this about for the last two months.
Could some dust or something have got into the IPod or could it be a battery issue ( although I try to keep it at full ).
I have downloaded the lastest updates of software ( 1.3 ) and always click on the update software buttom when am synching. I have also done a restore and all the other troubleshooting bits to no avail...

    A. 5 IN 1: This runs the following 5 tests at once (J through N as listed below): LCM, SDRAM, RTC, FLASH/CHECKSUM, and FIREWIRE/FW ID. B. RESET: Can your iPod reset? Run this test and find out.

    D. AUDIO: Plug in headphones, but don't expect an electronic rendition of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. This test checks the audio subsystem. You will see a message that says "0X00000000 DONE" if your iPod passed the test.

  • Computer tend to freeze when accessing internet with D-Link dir-655 router

I recently bought a D-Link dir-655 router and since then my computer tend to freeze up completely when accessing internet. This also happens when certain programs access internet. Otherwise I am usually using Internet Explorer or Opera.
I've found that there are many who experience problems with D-Link router, that they may have problems with certain network card. Anyone who can say if this is a known issues and if it there is a solution or if it is better to buy another router?

    Hi, Ernst:
Would you consider backing up your files and doing a system recovery?
Maybe the OS has some corrupt registry files or something.
If you recover and then it still does that, your only choice looking at the motherboard is a PCIe gigabit ethernet adapter which would be relatively easy to install, or you could even get a USB ethernet adapter and not even have to open the case.
See if there is a setting to disable the onboard NIC if you have to add a network card.
I would rule out all software problems before buying hardware.
If you want to try some other malware program, I recommend the free Kapersky rescue disk. You burn the file to a CD and boot from it.  It scans the drive and deletes any malware or virus files it finds without the PC being in windows. A lot of times viruses and malware can't be removed when windows is running.
Link to the download and instuctions for use is below. I like to use the graphic interface rather than the text interface.

  • It seems that my firefox hangs/freeze when I'm playing youtube vids, unable to surf at all. When i check task manager it seems to be a plugin container.exe problem? Can someone help me pls..

My firefox sometimes totally hangs/freezes when i try to replay a youtube video. I click the play button but the whole firefox juz hangs. When i try to end task it, i noticed a firefox "plugin container.exe" process.. So i figure it might be a plugin problem? I hope someone can help me with this..
Its getting very irritating and i love using firefox for web surfing.
Thanks in advance for ur help

YouTube videos use the Flash plugin. You can test your Flash plugin and see what version is installed by going to [http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Adobe's Flash Player test page]. To update Flash to the latest version, see [[Managing the Flash plugin]].
Starting in Firefox 3.6.4, Flash is loaded in a separate plugin-container process. For the background, see the articles [[What is plugin-container]] and [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins Plugin-container and out-of-process plugins (MozillaZine KB)].
If Firefox hangs when playing Flash videos at YouTube, it could be a video driver issue, Try turning off hardware acceleration in your [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player display settings] (visit any page that uses Flash, such as [http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Adobe's test page], then right-click the Flash animation, select Settings, and uncheck "Enable hardware acceleration" on the Display panel). ...More information here:

  • Firefox complete freezes when trying to play song on Myspace

    Hi,
When I try to play a song in the Myspace music player, Firefox completely freeze and I have no other choice than sending it a SIGTERM.
    I'm using kernel26rt (2.6.31_rt10-3), firefox 3.5.5-1 and flashplugin 10.0.32.18-1.1.
I've tried with a new profile but it does not change anything.
Any hint for where could this come from would be appreciated.
Edit : When the problem is occurring, I don't even get high load on firefox processes :

I tried it and it works without any problems. I tried also clean profile and I've had almost the same performance.
    My configuration:
    $ uname -a
    Linux nb 2.6.31-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 10 19:48:17 CET 2009 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
    $ firefox -v
    Mozilla Firefox 3.5.5, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2009 mozilla.org
    Flash 10.0 r32
    $ lspci | grep VGA
08:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400M GS] (rev a1)
    $ glxinfo | grep string
    OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8400M GS/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 3.2.0 NVIDIA 190.42
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.50 NVIDIA via Cg compiler
I've got another tip. Do you have open port 1935 ? It's a Adobe Media Server port, which you need to connect to receive a song.

  • Labview freeze when accessing a custom menu with data on the clipboard

This one has got me stumped:  When selecting a custom menu item with data on the clipboard the GUI freezes.  Freezes are longer for more data and longer for older versions of Labview.  I wrote the test code, attached, but the example "Menu Selection Demo.vi" shows the same behavior.
Running Labview 2011 here are some freeze delays for my laptop (a bit slower machine) with various amounts of text data on the clipboard:
    Clipboard size        Delay
    1.3MB                   2.1 sec
    2.6MB                   4.9 sec
    3.8MB                   17.2 sec
    14MB                    253.3 sec
The delay appears to be non-linear.  A doubling of the clipboard data size more than doubles the delay and a tripling of the clipboard data size produces a delay of almost 10X!  Things are also much, much worse on my ancient version 8.2.1 (over a 40 second freeze for 1.3MB and it goes up from there).
Note that the freeze also occurs on programs with a custom menu when exiting.  This would seem to suggest it might have something to do with the timeout, but why timeout should vary with clipboard size and not with the value wired to it makes this feel even more like a bug in the custom menu functionality.
This seems to be related to known issues in Labview 2011 #39604 49UBP4LE (http://www.ni.com/white-paper/13168/en#39604_by_Date) that was first reported in version 8.2.1.  This known issue relates to Labview freezing when large amounts of data are copied from Labview to the clipboard.  No fix has been implemented since this was originally reported in 2007.
This freeze also occurs when shortcuts to menu items (such as Ctrl + L) are used when large amounts of data are on the clip board.
Thus far this has been 100% repeatable and I have not been able to find a way around it.  I also haven't found anything else similar on the forums or on the web.  It appears to be a GUI freeze with Labview still running in the background, which is also odd.
My work-arounds at this point are either to not use the clipboard (bad), programatically clear the clipboard several times each second (worse) or remove all custom menu functionality and replace those functions with onscreen controls.  So, for now, I'm removing custom menu items because my users need the clipboard and I can't have massive delays making my data acquisition code look crashed.
Any ideas would be helpful.  This one has me scratching my head...

Well, doing Microsoft Word, Excel and what else on a computer that is used to run an important production test, is a very bad idea. There is no way that you can guarantee, that one of these applications is not causing some interruption to the currently running time critical task. Word and Excel and just about any other computer application can crash, lock up the computer or eat your breakfast while you are doing seemingly harmless things.
The issue with the clipboard in LabVIEW is indeed a problem that exists for a long time and I hope they fix it sometime, but the fact remains, that you should NEVER use a computer for other tasks while you run a test or other manufacturing related application on it, when a failure of that application can cost you more than a few pennies.

  • Firefox 12 freezes when system volume is above 50%.

I'm using firefox 12, and when i watch a youtube video, or if i play music with any player, firefox hangs if the system volume is 50% or more. It hangs for 2-3 seconds, then comes back, then hangs again. I'm on a hp laptop with 8 gb of ram, intel i7 and idt high definition soundcard.

ok, this may be the strangest bug i ever heard of. i would try to download the latest drivers for your soundcard & graphics hardware, uninstall abobe flash with the [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html uninstaller they provide] and reinstall it from [http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/]. another thing would be to try disabling all plugins in firefox > addons > plugins for testing purposes and see if this does make any difference.
in case this does not solve the issue it would also be interesting to know what is going on in the windows task manager (ctrl+shift+esc) while firefox is hanging - is firefox.exe or any other process is spiking to 100% cpu usage or is there an exceptional amount of memory occupied?
