Firefox refuses to update or to work - tries to automatically update in an unstoppable endless loop.

When I open Firefox it says "Foxfire is installing your updates and will start in a few moments; " then it says; The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again. and it does this over and over again all on its own in a loop that will not stop - and I cannot use Firefox while this is going on - I have to shut down the XP laptop, reboot and reinstall
only to have it randomly happen again a little while later on.

  • Firefox refuses to update past v2 despite numerous attempts

    Hi!
After seeing repeated nag msgs from youtube etc informing me I was using an out of date browser, I downloaded v 3.6 from mozilla website. I ran the program... it did 'a little housekeeping' and updated my FF, or so I thought...
fast forward a couple of months later and I'm still seeing the nag msgs. Turns out my firefox didnt update! So in desperation I uninstalled FF completely, then installed v3.6. What a surprise... I'm still on FF2.02!!!
It's getting to the stage now where despite my love for FF I am going to have to stop using it and switch to a browser that actually updates properly so I can protect myself from the current swathe of ridiculous popups etc. Anyone have any ideas on how I can update my FF to something relevant to this decade? :D

This part of the user agent shows that you have Firefox 3.6.3: rv:1.9.2.3 Gecko/20100401
You can check the '''general.useragent''' prefs on the '''about:config''' page.
You can open the ''about:config'' page via the location bar, just like you open a website.
    Filter: '''general.useragent'''
If ''general.useragent'' prefs are bold (user set) then you can right-click that pref and choose ''Reset''.

  • Mail trying to load messages and seemingly in endless loop

Recently, after getting a new logic board, new memory and reinstalling 10.4.11, mail has been trying to download emails from my server and just gives a "fetching message..." in the activity viewer for an extended period of time (I let it go for 10 minutes to make sure). BTW, this happened after I had been receiving emails just fine for 3 or 4 days.
In the activity viewer window, the "status bars" that normally move are stagnate. It also mentions trying to route the first message from two of my accounts. I don't have any rules set up (other than the default news from apple one) and junk mail enabled. I am using DSL, so it's not a slow download and I searched through my ISP host and could get to the emails, but it would be much more convenient if I could use Mail!
If I stop the downloading of these emails, Mail just sits and in the activity viewer I get "STOPPING :...." for each one but nothing happens. I have reverted to just Force Quitting Mail to move on, but something is obviously not working right.
Any thoughts on what's happening or where to go from here?

    Mulder,
Did 1, 2, and 3 as after each one, still the same problem. After 3, I started Mail without doing anything else, including any updating of software. In console got this long list:

  • Since I did an update on firefox 3 nothing works tried firefox 4 nothing works.

Running windows 7, everything working OK on Firefox 6. Update installed and now I cannot get firefox at all. Tried firefox 4 and it also does not work. Cannot open firefox

Nothing happens. I did try to delete foxfire and when I went to delete it completely it showed nothing for a size. Which tells me it did not download. I have tried downloading about 4 times and it is always the same. Getting frustrated. I have been able to use an old revision.

  • I open Firefox. It tries to install an update. Updating fails and I get a message" "Another copy of Firefox must be open. Close it. " A second copy is not open a far as I'm concerned. I have to refuse the update in order to use Firefox.

I don't know what more I can tell you except that I have to refuse an update in order to use Firefox.

    ■ Have a look at these two articles that may help
    # [[firefox hangs]]
    # [[Software update failed]]
Take care if you update by the last resort method mentioned in the linked article, if you delete settings it will remove all bookmarks etc from all versions of firefox

  • Updater seemed to fail. Firefox will not load any longer. Tried uninstalling, but cannot successfully download Firefox

Have used Firefox for several years. Latest update came automatically. First I got message that updater failed. Now Firefox refuses to load. I uninstalled and tried to download again. Still failure.

  • Just updated to Firefox 29.01 it doesn't work at all. When i open it no sites will load it just shows the busy circle going around forever. It is unusable.

Firefox 28 was working fine, but when I was asked by a pop up upon opening firefox to update to 29.01 i found there were lots of security issues for 28 so i manually updated to 29.01 by going to "about, check for updates, etc." Once it downloaded 29.01, and told me to restart, I restarted firefox. When I opened it, I found it is unusable. It won't open a single website. It won't load my homepage. It has all my favorites from before on the favorites toolbar, but I can't go to anything. I closed it and tried to run cc cleaner as I always do, but I keep getting the message "firefox is taking too long to close would you like to force a shutdown" but the forced shut down doesn't close it either. I opened task manager to try and shut it from there, but firefox isn't showing up. I have no idea what to do. I am typing all this from Chrome b/c I cannot use the latest version of firefox.I've never had this happen before. I also ran it in safe mode and the same thing happened. Please help, and please answer in layman's terms, because I am not a computer expert. I took a couple screen shots I will attach. Actually i don't see anywhere to attach an image so I can't. I also don't understand the green "automatically add" button that is underneath this box on the mozilla support page. Also, when I went to the help, about page in the top corner of firefox just now to check the version it says "firefox is being updated by another instance." What the heck does that mean? Never seen that ever. Appreciate any help.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

  • My adobe flashplayer latest version will not work since firefox 7.0 update

I know there is a problem with this because I have already seen it many times on the internet. Not happy that I can no longer watch any videos since the update. I have downloaded the latest version of adobe. I can see the"flash player" under my control panel but it is not listed in my plugins under the tools/add-ons.
I also followed the procedure shown on mozilla support to download the add on manager but it did not work either. It does also state on the mozilla website that they are quite aware that this has caused a problem for many. When is this going to be corrected?
So, I finally went back to Firefox version 3.6 just so I could still see my videos.

Hello, first update Firefox to v17.0.1 (or in the next days v18) please.
Are your drivers and DirectX up to date (very important) ?
Do you have tried to disable Flash Player Protected Mode (since v11.3) ? (that could explain why it is working with Flash Player v11.2)
Do you have tried to disable Hardware Acceleration (Flash Player or/and Firefox) ?
Do you have tried to disable all other extensions and plugins in Firefox ?
Do you have tried to use the Firefox safe mode ?
Do you have tried to disable your antivirus / firewall programm ?

    Just once or twice
    == update to 3.6.4. version

If you install 3.6.3 and don't want it to automatically upgrade you need to open the browser and select "Tools" from the menu bar. Go to "Options". Select the "Advanced" icon. Go to the "update" tab on the "Advanced" menu. Here you can configure how and what Firefox updates.
    Hope that helps.

Firefox shut down & updated in the middle of my work; I could not restore my session; you have literally cost me my job and future if this cannot be fixed. I don't understand why it updated without me prompting it to. It also never ask to report a crash.
I went to play a youtube video, my entire screen flashed, when the screen came back, the youtube video screen was green. I refreshed the page and my system stopped- a blue screen appeared and something about verifying disk or something. My system the restarted, and when I opened firefox, it first said preparing updates and when it did finally open, the new updated version, of course, I could not restore my previous session.

You can check in the Firefox profile folder to see if there are numbered sessionstore-##.js present.<br />
The sessionstore.bak file could also have a previous session.
You can also try to restore a previous copy of the sessionstore.js file if there is one present that could contain that lost session.
    *Right-click: Properties > Previous Versions
    *http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
Be sure to make a backup copy of all sessionstore files before making changes.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

As soon as I downloaded Firefox 4, my Roboform no longer worked. Roboform says it's not compatible so they want me to buy an update from them...don't want to do that. How can I download Firefox 3 again?

What you are seeing sounds like the "advertised update" from Firefox 3.6 versions to Firefox 8.0.1 that started on 2011-12-01. See --> https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases/Firefox_3.6_MU
This is the same as has occurred when prior versions were nearing their end-of-life. Support for Firefox 3.6 versions is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.
There are changes in the interface from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 4 and newer versions. See --> https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/common-questions-after-updating-firefox
The new Firefox version can be made to closely resemble the 3.6 Firefox interface.

The only currently supported versions are 3.6.24 and 8.0.1. Firefox 9.0 will be released on or about 2011-12-20 and will completely replace Firefox 8.0.1; an update to Firefox 3.6.25 from Firefox 3.6.24 will likely occur around that same time to correct any new security/stability issues found in Firefox 3.6.24.
