Firefox says that in order to load a webpage, I have to have javascript enabled. When I follow the instructions, it shows that java IS installed, but I still can't load the page. What can I do to fix this?

Cancel the update and start over again. You will most likely have to restore the iPad now anyway.
If you were using WiFi, try rebooting the iPad and see if by some miracle the download and install completes. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Try the download again.
If that doesn't work, try using iTunes to update. But turn off your firewall and antivirus software before you update,

1. it was downloaded on the itunes app in the iphone
2. it was synced from itunes on a computer

Not familiar with that version of OS X but try using Terminal and type in resetpassword. If that brings up a password reset screen is your original username shown?

The backups for your version are date-time stamped as the name and with an extension of .fcpproject. They look like this.
The original project is named CurrentVersion.fcpproject.
You need to replace the CurrentVersion with the backup file and rename it to be CurrentVersion.fcpproject.
With FCPX closed, I suggest you move the original to the Trash, but not empty it. Then promote your backup one level higher in the project folder hierarchy (to be at the same level that the original previously occupied. Then rename the backup.
Open up FCPX, which should now recognize your project.

I would first try a hard reset of the device, to clear up the possibility of any sort of temporary software glitch. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons togehter long enough for the Apple logo to appear. If it's a 6G Nano, hold the Sleep/Wake and Volume down buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, since iTunes still recognizes the device, perform a full restore. This will wipe all content from the device, reset all settings back to their defaults, as well as a load a fresh copy of the Nano's firmware onto the device.

Which operating system are you running on?
Try starting the organizer while holding down the shift key. Hopefully, it should load the Catalog Manager.
Select your current catalog and click on the Repair button. Once it has finished, click on the Open button to see if the catalog opens.

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
