Firefox seems to mess around with URLs containing certain non-alphanumeric characters.

When I try to access the URL http://www.the-dma.org/consumers/ [followed by anything - or nothing], I get a screen that says "Firefox can't find the server at www.dmaconsumers.org." - but, as you can see, that isn't the URL I was asking for. If I leave off everything after "the-dma.org", it works.
[Incidentally, in this block of this form, when I highlight text and click on either the '''Bold''' or ''italic'' buttons, it is put in quotes instead.]

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

Iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst file names and backups. Iphone4 connects to car though and other phones connect properly.

I substituted a much smaller new Personal Folder -Contacts File, with a smaller list of phone numbers (4 only as a test) which successfully synced to the iPhone 4. The iPhone connects to the Skoda Octavia HandsFreeSystem OK (Bluetooth works fine), but now iPhone wont load the new Contacts as it did originally. However a family Nokia (never messed with) can connect properly. So must be the iPhone or more likely an Outlook.pst \ Contacts problem. Ideas?

After fiddling a little more, the following fixed my corrupted outlook.pst file:
1) I made a backup
2) In outlook under file, I exported the calendar to excel
3) In outlook under file, I imported the calendar back to outlook
And voila, it worked.

Ovi messes around with my .jar files

Hmm, been unable to find info about this elsewhere.
When i install the Ovi suite (2.0.1.36) it decides that it is the best default program for my java .jar files which i use on my computer, not my phone.
Everytime i try to pick the appropriate program for my jar files, it either has errors or doesent show any gui.
Is there anyway to use the phone tethering without the ovi software or is there a fix to this?

Yes, this is completely ridiculous. Nokia PC Suite did the same, I expected newer software to stop messing around with something that is a de facto standard: .jar files are Java Archive files. OVI installation should NOT mess with the settings in registry for .jar files.
Run regedit, and look at the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.JAR (note the dot befor JAR)
This is where OVI has messed with things... You will see that the value OVI has set on that key is Nokia Ovi SuiteApplicationInstaller_JAR
If you have a key on your system that is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jarfile Change the setting on
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.JAR to jarfile.

There is nothing that you can do to get rid of the balance on your own. Contact iTunes Store Support and seek their assistance. I believe that they can reset your balance for you.

Object scaling does not seem to work correctly with objects containing Bezier curves

I created a closed object that had a Bezier curve as part of it's definition. I wanted to scale it by 110% and then use this second enlarged object to create a sort of a background underneath the first object to create a sort of a shadow effect. But rather than the second object being uniformly larger than the first it intersects the original object in ways that don't make sense to me.
Is there an easier/differnt way to create an effect like this? I can do it but have to manually adjust a lot of points in the new object so that they create a uniformly larger version of the original object but it's a lot of effort for something that works fine for normal polygons with straight lines (e.g. a star with 5 points).

ps - i've attached an image of what I get with this technique of creating two examples of two objects one a 110% scale version of the other. The first star shows the effect I'm trying to get and the second shows the problem (the red border does not surround the black object uniformly around the perimeter)

Referring to post #16 (trying to get it more right from the start than in post #15),
the scaling will be symmetric with parallel segments if the original object is rotationally symmetric and reflectionally symmetric about two orthogonal axes, and that is also the case.
The scaling of the object in post #16 is in fact symmetric because corresponding segments of original and scaled object have the same distance all the way round.
The five star in the OP is rotationally symmetric but only reflectionally symmetric about one axis, so the segments are parallel, but the scaling is not symmetric because there different distances between corresponding segments, even though you were actually satisfied with it:

This could be mended by scaling from the centroid.
If you need to have the same distance between all the segments of original and scaled object, with scaling you are restricted to objects where all segments start and end at the same distance from the centroid, as in regular polygons (including the square), regular stars, and the circle (with its curved segments). Objects with curved segments derived from regular polygons and stars will have varying distances and non parallellism within each segment.

ITunes is messing around with my files

I just bought my first iTunes music, a double disc. I wanted iTunes to list the two discs as separate albums, so that it wouldn't mess up the track listing, so I went to the file properties and added disc 1 or disc 2 to the album name. I also changed the file name to start with, for example, 01 instead of 1-01 for the first track of the first album, and I put the tracks in two different folders.
Now when I open these files with iTunes, the file names are automatically changed back to what they were when I bought them, and they're moved to a folder called "<album name> dis" (the album name in the properties - minus the "c 1" or "c 2"). None of the properties are changed, however.
How can I make it stop do this?

I messed around with tab groups and somehow closed it all. Now all my tabs are gone!

How can I fool around with url names and webapps?

I want to set up a hosted service where when someone buys, they get a url like so they can go to .....

When they go to this url, I want the servlet container to be using one app(a default app), and when they go to this url.....

they go to appName1. Now for the twist.....I would want these two urls to use the same app....(they would hook to different db based on company name)

Is anything like this even possible? I am thinking some sort of servlet filter sits before every app. That filter willl modify the url to http://xsoftware.biz/app1 and set a property in the request to the companyName for later use by the application. For redirects within the app(JSF), I think I can redirect to something like http://xsoftware.biz/company1/app1/redirectee.jsf and the filter will be applied again. Does this solution work? thoughts? Is there a better solution for this?

Same issue here! Unsolved after YEARS of this issue.
I dig through the downloads folder and paste a copied file name at least 15 times a day.
And Mountain Lion was supposed to be a big push for Chinese language users. Still a fail.

Safari and Firefox seem to have issues with Flash?

Hi - in the past few days every time I try to view a website with video, both Safari and Firefox hang with the beachball and I have to force-quit. I tested to see if it was just taking a long time to load, and it was still the same after an hour. I've read on this forum that Snow Leopard and Flash have some issues, and I've done everything suggested: un-installed Flash then re-installed the latest version, cleared out Safari cache and reset Safari, repaired disk permissions...I am at a loss. Any ideas are appreciated!

Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
If Safari still crashes, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

Hi, I am new to Applescript and after messing around with it have a few questions.

Firstly, I love applescript so far and have made an alarm clock, simple get weather app and applescript app that announces the time and date. i would like to be able to use this as a jarvis like combined app where i can have all of these built into one applescript. secondly i would like a better version of my weather app to be included that can give me weather based on my location (not the location i have it set too). lastly it would also be a miracle if someone could give me a way to make a simple chat like bot that can talk back because i have tried setting up eliza (chat bot from apple) but because it uses ichat things are much more difficult for me as a novice to set up properly. for instance type hi in a display dialog box and have the text returned open up in messages and be able to communicate with my chat bot that would have predefined responses for what i type. like if i type weather it would know to tell me the weather. anyway ill have my codes listed below and if anyone can help with any part of this that would be fantastic and greatly appreciated. also just a note i will never sell this thing if someone helps me by giving me coding to get this idea working. i just want it because i could greatly use having a virtual assistant and to use personally. thanks in advance for all people who do help.

Could you tell us what Envy 15 it is, please? I mean the full model name. The new laptops don't have any DVD drives because all drivers etc can be downloaded from the internet and all bootable images don't have to be burned to DVDs but simple converted to usb drives. Tell us also what printer you have got so we can find the right drivers for you.
